1 July 1, 2018 Open Mind Open Heart Open Door JESUS RAISES JAIRUS DAUGHTER TO LIFE Jesus often taught large crowds at the sea shore To gather large numbers He had space galore. One day He taught many people at the sea, Preaching from a boat, the people He could see. Among the crowd was a synagogue official, Who came to Him with a request very special. He first fell at Jesus feet before he spoke, With sadness, Jesus could see, his heart was broke. Lord, my daughter is at the point of death, I know you alone can restore her to health. Jesus went with to see his sick daughter, A large crowd followed Him causing a clutter. Your daughter is already dead came the sad news, For Jesus to come to the house there s no more use. Jairus was heartbroken at his daughter s demise, Jesus consoled him and told him not to agonize. Ignoring the message Jesus still went to the place, People came from everywhere and filled every space. He took the girl by the hand and told her to arise, At once she arose and caused a amazing surprise. The girl s parents thanked Jesus falling at His feet, People kept talking as they walked into the street. In the sight of all, the girl began to walk around, In this divine miracle, God s hand everyone found. Questions: 1. Ask the Lord: Lord increase my faith. I am a sinner. 2. Which stanza of this poem shows you the measure of your own faith? 3. Do you believe the Lord will answer your prayers? Reflections: All that we know about Jairus is that he was a synagogue official. What we have learned about him is that he was a man of great faith. He had an unflinching trust and confidence in Jesus, with faith that there was nothing impossible for Him. This was a kind of faith even the apostles did not have at the time. They struggled between earthly and heavenly realities. Most of them saw Jesus only as a potential leader who was capable of organizing a war against the Roman Empire and liberating the people from the clutches of Roman rule. I don t blame them because the Jews had been slaves in their own land with no power whatsoever. Many leaders had risen (Continued on page 2) Fremont Blvd Fremont, CA office@sjapostle.net

2 Message from Father Antony (Continued from page 1) and gone. They were not strong enough to fight the mighty Romans. They all fell to the sword. We wonder from where Jairus received such faith in Jesus. Did he know that Jesus was the Son of God? Jesus had become known as a miracle worker. Jairus probably had heard some of the stories. In any event, he had come looking for Jesus. He was lucky to have found Jesus among such a crowd of people who had gathered by the seashore to listen to Him. The moment Jairus saw Jesus, he came straight to the point by saying that his daughter was at the point of death. It was a question of time and something had to be done. All that he wanted Jesus to do was to lay His hands on her and she would be all right and would live. He has no doubts. He was confident. He was in dire need of help and he knew Jesus would not turn him down. Jesus did not hesitate and immediately began to go with him to his house. Jairus was probably a wealthy man, wellknown among the people, as one could see a large crowd following Jesus. But as they were still talking, the news came from his house that his daughter had already passed away. They told him that there was no use for Jesus to see his daughter any more. Would Jesus be able to bring her back from death to life? They could not even imagine that. They did not want to trouble Jesus anymore, for they knew He was a busy man. Jesus disregarded the news of the daughter s death and told the synagogue official to take courage and have faith. On arrival Jesus saw a large crowd of people who had come to the house, some to mourn the death of the girl, others to see what He would do. He could hear weeping and loud wailing. There was a great commotion. Jesus told them to keep quiet and stop crying because the child was only sleeping. Many laughed at Him when He said that the girl was sleeping, because they knew for certain that she had been dead for hours. Jesus asked everyone to leave the girl's room and did not allow anyone in except her mom and dad. Just as He did on a few other occasions, Jesus had also brought along Peter, James and John, His faithful recorders. After Jesus got into the room, He took the child by the hand and said to her, Talitha Koum, which when translated means, Little girl, I say to you, arise! At His word the twelve year old girl woke up immediately, got out of bed and began to walk. She ate some food while everyone watched. Jesus wanted no one to come to know this incident. But, this was too good a news to keep it to oneself. The only reason Jesus wanted no publicity was because He did not want to further jeopardize His mission. His enemies were waiting for a chance to arrest Him and eliminate Him. It was only a question of time before they would do that. What are your thoughts after reading this spectacular story of faith? I do not know what your thoughts are but I know of mine. I wish I had the faith of this synagogue official. I struggle with faith every day. Sometimes I am ashamed at how little faith I actually have. My faith is very weak. I wish my faith in God was as strong as this man, who had no doubt in the power of Jesus. Jesus was amazed at the faith of this man who wanted Him to lay His hands on his daughter, believing she would live. And she lived. It looked so simple. It was as if he knew he would get what he wanted from Jesus. Faith is a gift. All that you need to do is to ask for it. Faith is like a little child trying to walk. The more she tries, the more she will succeed. Faith invites you to surrender yourself to God, believing that what you pray for will be granted. It was not a small favor that Jairus was asking from Jesus. Probably he had done everything medically possible to cure his daughter. He would have tried every possible treatment for her. But everything failed. Jesus was his last chance and last hope. Jesus has assured us that our prayers will always be answered. How do we pray? With what faith do we bring our petitions to the Him? Lord increase my faith! In the same Gospel passage, Mark (5:25-34) speaks of a woman of great faith. This woman had been afflicted with hemorrhages for more than twelve years. She was reduced to poverty by spending all her money on different doctors who only made her suffer even more. She heard about Jesus. She almost sneaked behind Jesus and touched his cloak for she believed, If I but touch His clothes, I shall be cured. She was instantly healed. Jesus immediately realized that power had gone out from Him and wanted to know who touched Him. The woman came forward and told Jesus the truth about what she did. Jesus was impressed with her faith and said to her, Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction. I love to admire and recognize faith in other people. One of the things that impressed me when I first visited Lourdes in France was the faith of people who had visited shrine of our Blessed Mother from all over the world. Their devotion, their sincerity and simple faith touched me beyond words. Many of these people spent the whole night in front of the statue of Mary praying the Rosary. I see every day people of great faith at St. James. They are so simple. I see them praying at the grotto, kissing the pictures of Mary our mother or Jesus. You can see right there the living faith that these people have. My prayer every time I see them is Lord increase my faith. I am a sinner. Contacts: Sheila Vasco (510) mscjvasco@sbcglobal.net Lilibeth Mique (510) teammique4@gmail.com TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battlefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese Rev. James Field, J. S. Paluch O LORD BE MY HELP! Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, Why? This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O Lord, and have pity on me; O Lord, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. J. S. Paluch Co.
