here is so much of life that is bound up in ritual and tradition, so much of our life of faith that is T bound up in the church s rituals and traditions.

3 From the Pastor s Desk e leave the month of August behind and embrace September and Labor Day on Monday to honor the work of all those who pick and harvest the crops, who work to sustain our society espe- W cially all those in the service industries, and preserve the freedoms we hold dear. We give thanks to God for the workers who toil long and hard and for the wages they deserve. here is so much of life that is bound up in ritual and tradition, so much of our life of faith that is T bound up in the church s rituals and traditions. There is Tradition with a capital T that holds onto the rituals of the past that may not make full sense today, some say the faith of dead people, rituals simply observed without thought or reflection. There is also tradition with a small t, meaning the living faith of people today that leads us to worship and communion in the Eucharist. As Jesus points out to the Pharisees in Mark s Gospel, it is insufficient to merely go through the motions of worship, observing the human precepts or laws possibly more for show than genuine heartfelt faith. Instead he expects people responding to God in faith from their hearts, hearts that are moved by mercy and compassion, hearts that feel the pain of others and have empathy for those who are in need. ven Saint Augustine, the revered doctor of the church, who preached well, served the people and wrote extensively E trying to reveal the truths of God to the people had his own conversion experience. e know he lived a wild and sometimes bawdy life, fathering a son outside of marriage and more, but he was also W attentive to God, willing to listen to God s voice in his life and the gentle prodding of his mother, Monica. As restless as Augustine was, he found peace in Christ, found peace in his heart to live his faith from his heart. He is also known for these words, Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee. May we rediscover the power of God s peace when we live our faith from the heart, responding from our hearts out of love for the God who loves us without end. McGrath Diocese of San Jose When I began plans to retire, and considered where I would live, I had wanted to remain in the Diocese of San Jose. This has been my home for nearly 20 years. At first, I had hoped to live in a diocesan-owned house that is located on cemetery property, but necessary retrofitting proved to be too costly. This made it necessary to look for another house. The Diocesan Finance Council and the College of Consultors approved the purchase of the home in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose. I agreed with them that in economic terms the purchase of the home made sense in terms of financial return on investment. It was bought primarily with funds that had been designated for this sole purpose, funds that had accrued from the sale of Bishop DuMaine s condominium, when he was no longer able to live in it due to failing health. However, I erred in judgment in the purchase of a 5-bedroom home for $2.3 million. I failed to consider adequately the housing crisis in this valley and the struggles of so many families and communities in light of that crisis. I have heard from many on this topic and I have decided that I will not move into this house. The Diocese will put it up for sale as soon as possible; if there is any profit to the Diocese from that sale, those funds will be donated to Charities Housing, a division of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. I assume full responsibility for this decision and I believe that the sale of the house is the appropriate action. I thank those who have advised me. When I retire, I now intend to live in a rectory at one of our parishes.
