BLAST will have our annual Christmas party this Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m. Get stoked!! PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. WORDS OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE TO JUAN DIEGO Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that sickness, nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything. Moving Messages Have you shared your faith on your car? It s time to wish others Peace! Joy! Love! As your Merry Christmas message is seen by others, it sparks conversations between adults, questions from children and found memories of a special holiday, for many! Write a message on your car window! Messages can be changed daily, weekly or can adorn your car as long as they last! Enjoy the positive change you are making in our community! Window markers are available for you to write a moving message on your car windows. Please take a moment to write on your car windows with the window markers that are available at the back of the church. For those that attended Arise Season 3, this is a great opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Christ! Take action now and live your faith! Share Your Faith!

4 DIOCESAN NEWS, CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING & MORE PARISH EVENTS Advent Advent is the four week preparation time before Christmas Day. It begins on the first day of the liturgical year and ends on Christmas Eve. At church, and in homes, an Advent Wreath marks this special time of the year. Nov. 27th was the first Sunday of Advent and today marks the 2nd week of Advent. During the first week of Advent, the purple candle that is opposite the pink candle is lit. This week, another purple candle is lit along with the candle that was lit last Sunday. Next Sunday, the 3rd Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and the pink candle is lit. Praying Advent, a website by Creighton University s Online Ministries is a good resource for prayer. Take some time to slow down, pray and truly think about what will happen on Christmas Day. They greatly appreciate all of your thoughts. The power of prayer does great things! Catholic Tech Corner The word "app" is an abbreviation for application. An app is a piece of software. It can run on the internet, on your computer, or on your cell phone or any other electronic device. In modern use, most people refer to apps as applications or software programs that run specifically on phones or other mobile devices. In this weekly column, we will be providing you with information on different apps to enrich your Catholic faith journey. One such app is Mea Culpa, which provides a Catholic Examination of Conscience to prepare for the Sacrament of Penance. Advent Blood Drive There is no easier way to give back to your community then to donate blood. Please roll up your sleeves on Sunday, December 18th, 2016 from 8:30-12:30 p.m., when the Pastoral Care ministry of Saint Anthony Parish will sponsor an Advent Blood Drive. Sign ups will be held TODAY after each Mass You can also sign up online at the Stanford Blood Center website or contact Corinne Jarrett at for more information. Thank you for your continued support of the Stanford Blood Center and the thousands of people they serve. Need an ipad Donation We are still in need of an ipad donation in the Parish Office to assist in processing credit card payments at social events. If you have an ipad Air, ipad Air 2, or ipad Pro 9.7, we would greatly appreciate the donation. Please see Tracey in the Parish Office. We will gladly acknowledge your donation (according to Apple s buyback value) for tax purposes.

5 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: Today, on the 2nd Sunday of Advent, we realize or awake to the reality that the great feast of Christmas is only three weeks away, celebrating the incarnation of Jesus over 2000 years ago. With Thanksgiving behind us, many people, many families have put up their outdoor lights and decorations. You may have your house completely decorated for those early and necessary Christmas parties to appease all the relatives, neighbors and friends, and your Christmas cards may already be in the mail. Organized people have everything under control. The rest of us may be struggling to keep up one day at a time. But what do we do about this season of Advent, this season of anticipation to prepare for the Lord s coming anew in our lives and hearts? Since Christ has already come, he is not literally born again, but there is another meaning for the word Advent, coming from the Latin adventus; a word often used to mean arrival. So we speak of his arrival in our hearts, a more spiritual or religious experience. We can understand this not so much on us waiting for God, but as God waiting on us to prepare a place for the Word to find room in the very fabric of our lives. One way to make room is to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation at this time of year. We will celebrate reconciliation on Thursday, December 15 th. Making room can mean a couple of things. The first might be to remove the clutter from our minds and hearts that keep us from giving wholehearted attention to the love of the Lord. This clutter can be the attitudes we hold onto, the actions, the sins that keep us from being wholly focused on the Lord s arrival. The second might be engaging in those activities that bring the love and light of the Lord into the lives of others. You may choose to sign up and donate blood through the mobile Stanford Blood Center on Sunday, December 18. You may choose to pick up a gift tag for the Saint Joseph Center in Gilroy to provide an individual with a gift for Christmas. You may choose to empty a closet of little used clothing that could benefit someone else. You might choose to make room on the dining room table for an Advent wreath, four candles either purple or white and use the prayers easily found on websites to be open to the coming light of the Lord. You may have chosen to ask for prayers and in turn pray for someone else in the parish through our Advent Angel program. Or you may choose to set aside some quiet time each day to simply rest in the Lord s presence between now and Christmas over a cup of tea or coffee in the morning or evening. One thing is certain life will not slow down for us, it will not hold us by the hand, instead we need to make a space where God can enter into our lives and hearts and then on Christmas Day despite all the chaos, we can sing God s praises with all the angels and saints, O Come all ye Faithful! Advent Blessings, Father Larry Christmas Holiday Mass Schedule Thursday, December 15-7:30 p.m. Advent Communal Reconciliation McKean Church Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, :00 p.m. Family McKean Church (Open at 3:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. carols and music before Mass) 6:00 p.m., Bertram Road Church 11:00 p.m., McKean Road Church (Carols before Mass) Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, :30 a.m., McKean Road Church 10:30 a.m., McKean Road Church New Years Day, Sunday, January 1, Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 McKean Road Church SAINT ANTHONY PARISH CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING COMMITTEE Quotes for Reflection Human rights are not only violated by terrorism, repression or assassination, but also by unfair economic structures that creates huge inequalities. Pope Francis If you have a couple of hours to spare in an afternoon (2 p.m. - 4 p.m.) and would like to volunteer in the Parish Office, we would welcome your participation. It would involve one or two days a month and may range from being available at the front desk to answer the phone and greet visitors, to some data entry or filing. Please contact: Tracey Nicol, Office Manager, to discuss this opportunity at (408) or her: churchstanthony@aol.com We would like to acknowledge the hard work of our Arise groups this season. The Tuesday Morning, Tuesday evening and Thursday evening Arise groups have been quietly donating to Christ the King Parish to fill their pantry. Their generosity has been overwhelming and the pantry is now well stocked and ready for the increased need experienced at this time of year. Thank you for being part of nourishing our community with respect, kindness and food, without judgement. Christ the King Parish Retirement Fund for Religious Your donation works for aging religious. I read that roughly 95 percent of donations to the Retirement Fund for Religious really does aid senior religious, a donor writes. That s wonderful when we truly want our donations to work. Your gifts work for elderly religious by helping to furnish medications, nursing care and more. Please support next week s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, and give to those who have given a lifetime.
