2 Second Sunday of Advent Page 2 Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2011 Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Mark 1:3 GOD S DELAY In times of great difficulties scoffers taunt us, Where is God? Why hasn t your Lord come to save you now? And we of faith respond much in the same way as Peter did in today s second reading: the delay of the Lord s second coming is not any type of punishment or failure to keep the divine promise, but a loving sign of God s patience. God is giving everyone the chance to seek repentance. God does not make life more difficult. Rather, God lessens our burdens as once before for the Jewish exiles returning home to Judea after captivity in Babylon. It was God who personally led them, making a straight highway for them across the desert. We join with our ancestors of faith, who hoped that they might see God s Chosen One before them and who eventually realized that the Lord was also walking with them side by side. Copyright J. S. 4 Second Sunday of Advent Page 4 ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST (2nd Sunday of Advent) For some time now driving around the freeway and roads of Auburn has not been a pleasant experience, not just because they are busy but because of their uneven surfaces. Lately there have been new highway and road widening projects. Many times we are told to move right or left because of the resurfacing and the traffic moves slower. All of us adjust, and with patience we get there. John the Baptist is telling us during Advent we need to get ourselves ready like a good straight road or highway. Some repair work is necessary. There are holes of selfishness and gaping holes in our loving. There are perhaps "holes" in our relationships, truthfulness, thoughtfulness and maybe our feelings of superiority to others. Besides the holes, we have put up roadblocks that prevent God and the world around us getting through to us. The roadblock may be as simple as "I don't want to change." John the Baptist who challenged the people of his day also confronts us by saying "Get the road ready for our God." What a stunning affect he had on the people, all Judea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him. The good news of Christianity begins with John the Baptist's call to recognize the unredeemed areas of our lives. Like the broken and narrow freeway and roads around Auburn that need repairing and widening, our life roads also need repairing and widening, so God can come to us easily without hold-ups. Our God does not back away from helping us. He has gifted us with free will and choices. He has gifted us with this Sacred Season and the means to make a straight path for His Son. Let us listen to John the Baptist and ask God to help us get that new road ready so that Christ can travel straight into our lives this Christmas Season. Maybe when we become credible witnesses to Christ's presence, others may join us for Christ Mass (Christmas). God Bless, Fr. Mike ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Giggles: A committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing but collectively can meet and decide nothing can be done. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An Irish man goes to the Doctor and after the examination his doctor says "You are depressed, you need cheering up. You should go to the Abbey Theater to see the new comedy by Mike McCarthy. It's guaranteed to make you laugh." The patient said, "I am Mike McCarthy." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two classmates meet in the lobby of a New York apartment complex. One invited the other to dinner. "I live in apartment 1534", she said. "Just lean on the door with your elbow." "Why should I use my elbow?" The other woman asked. "You weren't thinking of coming empty-handed, were you?"

6 December 4, 2011 Page 6 Something Old, Something New Adjusting to the Roman Missal translation next Advent 2011 will be a little like moving into a new room. At certain points in our lives we may realize that we have outgrown a room, an apartment, or even a home and that we need more space. While moving into a new space gives us an opportunity to add new furniture, we don t usually throw away all the old. We combine the new pieces with the pieces of furniture that we are bringing along to create a new living space that serves our needs. In many ways, the need for a third edition of the Roman Missal translation is similar. Like the addition of brand-new furniture, some of the third edition includes completely new texts for use at Mass. Much of this third edition, however, will be as familiar to us as old furniture, albeit renewed in its beauty through a new translation. As we prepare to implement the Roman Missal translation next Advent, it is important to know why a third edition is needed and in what ways it will be different from its previous editions. Recall that 10 years ago, much was being made of the turn of the millennium. As we approached the year 2000, grand events were being planned all over the world. The Church was no different. Each of the three years leading up to the turn of the millennium was dedicated to one of the Persons of the Trinity to help Catholics prepare for Y2K. It was this event the year 2000 that the pope chose to commemorate by issuing the third edition of the Roman Missal translation. The Roman Missal Translation was Necessary However, the issuing of another edition of all the texts we use at Mass was not done solely for the millennium. The truth is, we needed another edition. Since the second edition was promulgated in 1975, numerous new prayers and other texts had been added to the Missal. This was largely due to the number of saints who had been canonized since Pope John Paul II canonized more saints than any other pope in history (some 480). For those whose feast days were added to the universal liturgical calendar, there were prayer texts for the Masses celebrated on those days. All of these had to be added to the Roman Missal. In addition to these prayers, other texts have been added. For example, in 1995, a new Eucharistic Prayer was issued the Eucharistic Prayer for Various Needs and Occasions. Four new Prefaces were part of this text. Since the prayer is not in the current Missal, it has only been available in supplemental form. With the third edition, the Roman Missal translation, this prayer will have its rightful place among the other main Eucharistic Prayers we use. Although moving into a new living space is exciting, it can also be a challenge as we try to recall where things are now compared with our previous space. As we move toward the implementation of the Roman Missal translation in Advent 2011, we will no doubt experience the same excitement and challenge that comes with any change. It will only be a matter of time before we adjust and once again feel at home with the words we use to worship our good and gracious God. ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH, 100 YEAR JUBILEE: You are cordially invited to St. Joseph's Church 100 year jubilee on Saturday, December 17, Mass will be held at St. Joseph's at 5:00pm with the Most Reverend Jaime Soto.
