The ritual of burning old palms for the ashes on Ash Wednesday is a reminder of our ongoing journey of faith. We held our palms high on Passion Sunday, welcoming Christ, our triumphant King, to Jerusalem. We burn these same palms turning triumph to ash, symbolizing the times we fail to live as Christians. On Ash Wednesday, the dust of the ashes will be marked on our foreheads as once again we begin our communal journey to renewed faith at the Baptismal font on Easter. Baskets will be placed at the doors of the Church for collection of palms on February 10/11. ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE FEBRUARY 14 Ashes will be distributed at all Masses 7 a.m., noon, 5 p.m., 7 p.m. in the Church Lenten Fast and Abstinence Regulations Abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent (for those 14 and older) is required by Church law. Also, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are fast days: those between the ages of 18 and 59 should eat less, meaning, take no solid food between meals and only one full meal that day. Serious health conditions excuse a person from these precepts. Pastors and parents are encouraged by the law of the Church to ensure that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated nonetheless in an authentic sense of penance. Following the implementation of the revised Code of Canon Law on November 27, 1983, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in the United States determined that the rules of fast and abstinence, which have existed for the last several years in this country be maintained. Namely, that the faithful observe suitable penitential practices on all Fridays throughout the year. These penitential practices need not include abstaining from meat. However, as indicated above, the faithful must not eat meat on all the Fridays of Lent as well as on Ash Wednesday. They must also observe faithfully the fast regulations as they have been stated above in accord with the universal law of the Church (Cf. Code of Canon Law, Canons ). MISSION TRIP There will be a meeting of those interested in participating in the parish Mission trip to Orland, Maine, (July1-7) in the rectory conference room on February 11, after the 915 a.m. mass. For information contact Mike Marran at mmarran@cox.net QUOTE OF THE WEEK and equality, why does it appear that the Church in America has been incapable of taking decisive action and incapable of enunciating clear cut principles regarding racism? there has been so little social consciousness among are to be true to the principles on which our country was -Bishop George V. Yes, even in the season of Lent, we say it; we believe it; and more importantly, we live it! Every celebration of the Eucharist is a celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus. This means that we remember resurrection during Lent even on Good Friday, when we receive Holy Communion (the sacrament of the risen Christ). It also means that there are funerals in the Easter season, and there are baptisms in the Lenten season. We the door, knocking. This report provides an overview of RIOVA efforts to serve those who have served, through the new Veterans Home, the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, and the Veterans Resource Center in Warwick. Some highlights include: WaterFire Salute to Veterans with ceremony, resource fair, and full lighting; ribbon cutting ceremony on Veterans Day for the new state-of-the-art Veterans Home in Bristol; and RIServes wide coordination network for Veterans, service members, and their families. This informative and welldesigned report can be found on the RI Office of Veterans Affairs website at: under the tab Annual Report. PEACE & JUSTICE NEWS On Saturday, March 3, all parishioners are invited to join in a Lenten day of service and advocacy on behalf of others in the local community. So far, we are committed to cooking a meal for Welcome House, preparing lunch for Habitat Restore volunteers, and presenting a musical program for a local nursing home. Other possibilities are to peel potatoes or bake muffins for the Mathewson Church Sunday breakfast, help out at Jonnycake Center in Peace Dale, or visit Dorcas International to learn how we could mentor newly arrived refugees. We will gather together after the 5 p.m. Mass to share pizza and fellowship in the parish hall. After dinner we will write advocacy letters to our local representatives -topics to be determined. If you know of an agency or an individual who could use some volunteer assistance March 3 or you would like to join in the planning in general please call or Bunny Reardon to discuss: or bunnycello@yahoo.com or come to our next Peace and Justice meeting on February 21 at 7:30 p.m.. Journey to Jerusalem: Prologue and my glory, He is the rock of my strength; my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, O my people! Psalm 62: 8-9 This Lenten Season, as in past ones, we share the stories of Jesus on his human journey to fulfill his divine destiny. His journey is memorable because it gives us many insights into his divinity via the miracles he performs, but we also witness the fact that he is utterly human and acts and feels just like all of us. Like us, he has to endure loneliness and temptation. Like us, he suffers the sorrow of losing someone he loves. Like us, he is striving to find out how to become the person he was meant to be. Like us, he is rejected by others because he is not like them Like many of us, he is trying to deal with all this in the face of others who have a different image of whom or what he is, and where his place in society should be. Jesus, like the rest of us, often struggles to navigate the events that life throws in his path. He feels suffering, loneliness, sickness and despair just like us. At these times, he reaches out to God for guidance. He needs the assistance of the angels, to keep him safe in the desert. He needs the message of his divinity to be communicated to his disciples, through God on the mountaintop. Through divine intervention, he performs miracles that reveal his true identity, but his true identity is not just God; it is also human. This Lent, on our own Journey to Jerusalem, we will share some of the human experiences of other parishioners who are in our midst. These people, like all of us, faced uncertainty, doubt, challenges, often very painful ones, and loss. They were not sure how to navigate these events in their lives, but the insights they gleaned from their faith in God, and their trust in him, helped them weather these difficult moments. Our Lenten Journey to Jerusalem is meant to embrace two ideas: one is that the road to physical health can be achieved through a daily fitness activity, like walking. The other is the awareness of our humanity, gleaned through our unique connection to the Savior of the World. Just as Jesus shared our humanity with us, we all share his spirituality with him.
