2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT The time is growing closer, and many of us are scurrying through malls and online to find what we hope to be the perfect Christmas gifts for friends and family. There was a beautiful Christmas story online about giving the perfect Christmas gift that I d like to share with you. Hopefully, reading it will be an inspiration for all of us at this Christmas preparation time. Here is the story: As a child, Joseph always remembers running down the steps on Christmas morning and looking around the tree for the biggest box. He falsely believed at the time that within the biggest box was the most expensive and best gift. But as time works its magic on the mind and soul of a young person, Joseph soon realized that each and every gift was meant to be special, unique and meaningful. In fact, those presents that he remembered most were the gifts that came directly from the heart, such as one of his mother s handmade sweaters or scarves. But he continued to ask himself the question: What is the perfect gift? He spent many days searching the crowded stores and scanning numerous holiday catalogs and the internet, but nothing seemed to stand out for him. As Christmas was quickly approaching, he worried and wondered if he would ever find that perfect gift. He decided to try the mall one last time. Maybe he had missed a store or miraculously, perhaps some new merchandise had just hit the racks and shelves. As he quietly passed from one store to the next, nothing attracted his eye. Feeling somewhat exhausted and defeated, he slowly made his way to the mall exit. But before he reached the exit and was about to leave, he stopped short, struck by some profound thought. My goodness! He had, in all his searching time, already found that perfect gift and didn t even realize it. No, this gift was not displayed in a fancy and expensive department store. It will not be wrapped in pretty Christmas paper and adorned with ribbons and bows. Actually, this gift doesn t have a receipt and it can t be taken back. So, where did he find this perfect gift and more importantly, what is it? He had seen it in the eyes of an elderly couple holding hands. He heard it in the playful words between a grandfather and grandson, and he saw it in the actions of a proud mother gently cradling her newborn baby. He saw it in the man who held the door for a handicapped woman and the child who picked up a package that fell out of the arms of an elderly man struggling on a walker. Gifts money can t buy. Truly, gifts given from the heart! This story clearly reminds us that the perfect gift is right before our very eyes. It is in each and every kind of thoughtful act we can offer to another. It is the priceless gift of giving of ourselves! John Philip Newell tells us, Do we know, each one of us, that we are bearers of the sacred beat of life? Do we know that we can honor that beat in one another? And, do we know that it is in this sacred combination of knowing that we are bearers of God s Presence? And it is in choosing to honor God s Presence in one another that holds the key to transformation in the world? So, along with the beautifully wrapped presents we will give this Christmas, let us also give others the perfect gift in what we say and what we generously do for them. And, let us remember that honoring God s Presence in another is not just a gift for Christmas; it is a gift we can and must give every day to our brothers and sisters! Merry Christmas and blessings of the gifts of self that you give to others! 2 Saint Anne Church December 16, 2018 stannebarrington.org

4 Saint Anne Catholic Community THE HALLOW APP Today s world is crazy. Society puts an insane amount of pressure on us and there s an increased expectation to work harder, study harder and perform better. At the same time, people are falling away from their faith faster than ever before. A team, including parishioner, Erich Kerekes, recently developed Hallow, a guided prayer and meditation mobile app. Hallow is similar to other meditation apps such as Headspace or Calm, but is rooted in Catholic tradition. Hallow users can take advantage of prayer methods they may not have prior exposure to with the goal of uncovering practical and effective methods in strengthening faith. Users can deepen their relationship with God, allowing Him into their day-to-day life and stress, and live in His peace and joy. The app features a variety of ways to interact with God in a very simple, convenient, guided format. Visit this link, for a featured article on the developers. If you are interested in Hallow, search Hallow: Prayer and Meditation in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store to download a free trial. Additionally, contact Erich directly at erich@hallow.app. For more information, visit To deepen your prayer during Advent we invite you to pick up Ornaments of Grace, a free booklet of daily reflections. The series features biographical sketches of saints and everyday people who lived out the challenge of the gospel. The booklet also accompanies a daily video series featuring Fr. Michael Sparough, SJ. Consider using this resource with your family, prayer group or individual prayer. These free Advent booklets, Ornaments of Grace, are available in our Gathering Space. * Heartoheart.org/ornaments 4 Saint Anne Church December 16, 2018 stannebarrington.org

6 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS ONE START TIME, ONE CAMPUS, ONE SOLUTION Preschool in Mrs. Deren s Class The preschoolers in Mrs. Deren s class are getting into the Christmas spirit! They have been getting ready for Christmas and decorating their classroom by creating artwork such as cookie cutter art prints, tissue paper ornaments and painted wreaths. The preschoolers were thrilled to be able to choose from a variety of new Christmas-themed activities, such as Christmas shape sorting, counting with holiday counters and building with red Play-Doh. During play time, the students were so excited to be in the dramatic play area so they could fill stockings and decorate the classroom Christmas tree with ornaments and garland. During this Christmas season, our class is also learning how to give back by collecting fleece blankets for our Advent sharing tree and making gifts for their moms and dads. We are looking forward to our classroom wrapping station and will continue getting ready for Christmas with our friends at school! 8 Human Concerns ST. MARTIN DE PORRES WOMEN S SHELTER CHRISTMAS PARTY A resident has a Christmas photo taken with her children, a print of which she was able to put into a frame that day. The children played games and crafted after shopping for their mothers. Residents love having photos taken in front of the tree. Framed copies are given to them that day. The Sharing Board visited the St. Martin de Porres Women s Shelter this month to host our annual Christmas party for the residents and their children. The women and children enjoyed the morning filled pictures in front of the tree, Christmas shopping from donated items, games, crafts, pizza and cookies. We were struck by the joy and smiles these simple things brought to the women and their children, and were thanked many times by each of the residents. Thank you to all who contributed in making this a special day for those at the shelter, especially Sandy Kraimer, who organized this event once again. Thanks to the Sharing Board volunteers who ran the various activities. Thanks also to the House of Hope volunteers who generously donated jewelry and scarves for the gift shop. 12 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT, (9C) Hebrew Scripture: Zephaniah 3:14-18a Responsorial: Isaiah 12:2-3, 4, 5-6 Apostle: Philippians 4:4-7 Gospel: Luke 3:10-18 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. The Lectionary omits these verses (Luke 8:7-9), [ 6 He said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 7 Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 8 Even now, the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. ] from today s gospel selection, but it is a clue to understanding the entire selection passage from vv Crowds 1 have come to John the Baptist in the wilderness around the Jordan River to listen to his preaching and to be baptized 2 by him. He severely admonishes them to produce evidence of their inner conversion because simply claiming to be a member of the Chosen (the Children of Abraham) is not an automatic guarantee of salvation. They ask, What then 3 should we do? John s answer is startling! They are poor, yet they are to share? They scarcely have one coat, let alone two; food is scarce and he dares to suggest that they share? And, if that is not ironical enough, John points to the outward activity of the hated oppressors (the local militia) and the traitorous tax-collectors who do the work of Rome; both make their living by extorting from these very people. But even the soldiers and the tax collectors, despised members of an out-group, were expected to change their spots and to show evidence of inner conversion by their outward action. The Baptizer must have been a powerful preacher indeed for at v.15, Luke tells his community to whom he writes that the people are so heartened by John s words that they wonder if he is not the promised Messiah. Not so! Luke carefully shows John as subordinate to the One who is to come. 4 That One will baptize in a different way: with fire and the Holy Spirit. That One would not only preach good news but he would be Good News. Using agricultural imagery, Luke shows that those gathered into the barn at the harvest would be the baptized, the ones who had been restored to status in the community, the ones whose conversion was evidenced by their doing their part in smoothing the ways, filling up the valleys and leveling the hills. It is vital to keep in mind that although I speak above about the words and actions of John, the Baptizer, our focus is in understanding what it is that Luke, the evangelist, the composer of the gospel named after him as well as of the Acts of the Apostles, is telling the readers whom he is addressing largely, Gentile Christians. Luke writes more than only the history of salvation as it unfolds in the story of Jesus interacting with those who are following him. Luke writes to encourage those living in the period between the Ascension and the Parousia 5 (that s us!) to consciously live in solidarity with the followers of the Christ by intentionally connecting with the deeds and words of the Christ that writers like the evangelists and Paul have left behind; look, for example, at the opening verses of both Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. In the Hebrew scripture pericope from Zephaniah, the ruling elite are warned that the king 6 of Israel (God) is already in their midst, and these rulers will no longer continue to do injustice by taking birthrights away, by excessive taxing, by oppressing. Therefore, the ones 12 Saint Anne Church December 16, 2018 stannebarrington.org

13 Sharing the Living Story who are the oppressed, the out-group, are heartened. God will restore them to status within the community; they will no longer have to fear disaster; they will be renewed in God s love, for God is in their midst to return them, no longer the vanquished, to their own lands. So also it is to be for those of the Jesus Community who lived among the Greeks at Philippi. Paul tells the Philippians that they are to [h]ave no anxiety at all but instead to rejoice and let their behavior, their kindness be known to all [because] the Lord is near. 7 How very palpable to us, then, is the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Reading beyond this gospel pericope, Luke clarifies that our behavior is to be as inclusive as that of God. Luke portrays the Son who is the beloved of the Father (v.22) as a descendant of Adam, 8 the forerunner of the whole human race and not just the son of Abraham, the forerunner of the Jewish nation, as Matthew had portrayed. 9 As we shall see, Luke s Jesus will reach out to the most disenfranchised; he will stretch his arms on the cross in such a fashion as to embrace all of humanity and not just the in-groups. Once more, the Lectionary response after the first reading (normally a psalm but here a passage from Isaiah) contains the clue to the inter-relationship among the biblical passages: Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel. All this explanation, So What?? It s the Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, the Sunday we say was for rejoicing that the Lord was coming. But we re immersed in our culture things are starting to get hectic in our lives shopping, the tree, cards, gifts, wrapping, letters, baking, where to put relatives, phone calls, parties to plan and to attend can the list be accomplished? Where is the time to rejoice, the time to be glad in anticipation? And then, there s the Babe in the manger or is it all about the Baby? 1 Recall that in the countryside, the population would be rural and poor, eking out a subsistence living from the land or farming another s land as tenants; these crowds however contained others: tax collectors, soldiers. 2 For the ancients, even before the time of Jesus, the use of water rituals for purification signaled a turning from a life apart from the group toward a return to being a member of the group; the ritual was the entryway from conversion to forgiveness, from the life apart to a life within the bosom of the community. 3 Note that the lectionary pericope omits the word then which in the bible setting makes the passage intelligible. 4 This One is not the Baby; John s cousin is already born! Keep in mind that Luke writes these words to an existing community around the year 80! 5 Parousia = the second coming of the Christ at the end of time. 6 The duty of Israel s kings was to ensure that God s justice (righteousness) was done among all, i.e., that in all relationships there was to exist a state of right or that which was what it was supposed to be, as in a just weight or measure one that was what it was supposed to be; a judge was to make decisions that were without partiality that were righteous. 7 For Paul, writing in the mid-fifties, there was the strong expectation that Jesus would return any day now! 8 The genealogy ends with this at v Matthew 1:1 Saint Anne Church December 16, 2018 stannebarrington.org 13

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
