Time - for the pilot, it might be measured in seconds, minutes, or hours. Distance - in miles, or kilometers. Heading - utilizing a compass direction (magnet or true) or track. A comparison can be made for volunteering. Time - do we have the requisite time in our own busy schedules. Will the required effort fit our schedule, e.g. minutes, hours, days, weeks, or years? Distance - do we have the wherewithal to go the distance; for instance building a Habitat house, or possibly just building a wall to a Habitat house. Can we find focus and see the vision, see the finish line and know when we are off course and how to get back on course to get to our destination? As individuals; husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, we all have to weigh our own life journeys and decide if and when we can have the capacity to engage and give back. The Knights of Columbus gives us the opportunity to find that right time and the ability to be part of the development of programs to support the church and our catholic community. I challenge each of you to find your time, pick your path, and plan to go the distance. If you need assistance, as we all do, we will be there to assist. November will come and go quicker than we would hope but let us face - first things first - and that is with Father Phil's permission, we will be having the Intellectual Disabilities Drive for the 4 th and 5 th of Nov in conjunction with a recruitment drive after each mass. I am asking that each of us, from the newest members to our most seasoned please join in after each mass, at the exits and in the parish hall. The Knights of Columbus will be passing out Tootsie Rolls and helping to get the word out about our Councils programs and charitable events we participate in. That s right, we are recruiting. As you talk to each Catholic Gentleman and his spouse, remember to invite them both to the 7 th of November Benefits Night in the parish hall. Doors open at 6:30 and there will be refreshments served. We will have discussions run by the Membership Director on what the Knights offer members, discuss some of the programs we have established and will establish and our insurance agent Mark Boyle will walk us through some of the investment and insurance products available. This event is open to all Knights and their spouses within the district and all Catholic men and their spouses interested in hearing about the Knights. Look for more information via and in the bulletin. God Bless You All, Vivat Jesus, Mike Weist Grand Knight, Council 11672

N ov e mb e r Shepherd s Watch Page 3 MEMBER RECOGNITION Family of the Month The Family of the Month for October 2017 is the Rose family. Mike, completed his 1st Degree in 1973 and his 2nd and 3RD degrees in He is a past Grand Knight and Community Director working with the most vulnerable members of our community. Margaret and Mike have been selected as the Family of the Month as this month culminates a lifetime of giving through service and continues their journey to care and comfort those in need. Let us all congratulate the Rose Family for all they do for the Church, community, and the Knights of Columbus. God Bless you Margaret and Mike Rose. The officers and members of Council wish a Happy Birthday to the following members who have birthdays in November: Roger Pruitt... November 01 Robert Stephens... November 02 Juan Mendoza... November 04 Jim Johnston... November 05 Estan Rodriguez... November 13 Bruce Dombrowski... November 14 Paul Rivette....November 16 William Boenker... November 30 Knight of the Month The Knight of the Month for October 2017 is Robert (Bob) Hirschbuehler. Shown left to right: John Arthur, Mike Weist, Ulysses Yee Shown left to tight: Rodolfo Chavez, Benny Concepcion, Robert Hirschbuehler Bob is a 16 year Knight with a quiet demeanor and a can-do attitude. A longtime Knight s Breakfast front-man, Bob has been balancing the breakfast books calculating families and friend for as long as we all can remember. Now moving on to the serving line, Bob has picked a second career feeding the hungry. But not all his efforts are behind the counter and out of view. Bob was first to volunteer, and volunteer he did, logging 3 Tootsie Roll service shifts over three days supporting the Intellectual Disability Campaign. Like the superhero of old, our Superman seldom seeks notoriety and fame, does not wait for others to step forward, and is one of the kindest soles in our order. We could all learn a lesson or two on serve before self from a man of few words. Thank You Bob for being our Oct 2017 Knight of the Month.
Page 4 MEMBER RECOGNITION Gary Michael (Mike) Rose Mike is a Past Grand Knight of Council and currently the Faithful Navigator of Assembly 0004 On October 23, 2017, President Donald J. Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to United States Army Captain Gary M. Rose (retired) for conspicuous gallantry during the Vietnam War. Captain Rose received the Medal of Honor for voluntarily risking his life on multiple occasions during combat operations, while serving as a medic with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). From September 11 through September 14, 1970, while his unit was engaged with a much larger force deep in enemy-controlled territory, then-sergeant Rose repeatedly ran into the line of enemy fire to provide critical medical aid to his comrades, using his own body on one occasion to shield a wounded American from harm. On the final day of the mission, although wounded himself, Sergeant Rose voluntarily exposed himself to enemy fire while moving wounded personnel to the extraction point, loading them into helicopters, and helping to repel an enemy assault on the American position. As he boarded the final extraction helicopter, intense enemy fire hit the helicopter, causing it to crash shortly after takeoff. Again, ignoring his own injuries, Sergeant Rose pulled the helicopter crew and members of his unit from the burning wreckage and provided medical aid until another extraction helicopter arrived. Enlisted in the Army after attending San Fernando State College. He attended Officer Candidate School in 1973 and earned a bachelor s degree in general education and military science from Cameron University in He retired from the Army in After retiring, Captain Rose earned a master s degree in communication from the University of Oklahoma and later worked as a technical consultant in the defense and automobile industries, developing user and maintenance manuals and training programs and materials. Captain Rose lives in Huntsville, Alabama, with his wife Margaret, and is involved in a number of charitable organizations. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, the Knights of Columbus, the Military Officers Association of America, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Special Forces Association, the Special Operations Association, and the Vietnam Veterans Association. He and Margaret have two daughters, Sarah and Claire, and one son, Michael.

Page 6 SHORT STORY CORNER Submitted by Mike Rose In Flanders Fields by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, Canadian Army Medical Corps, May 1915 In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Special Olympic activities and pictures at the state web site The Alabama Special Olympics program provides sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympictype sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. It improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of everyone they touch. As a result, the athletes become fulfilled and productive members of their families and the communities in which they live. Souls in Purgatory The following are events scheduled for the Huntsville area: Oct 19 - Bowling Tournament at Madison Bowling, Madison; Oct 23 - Hampton Cove Golf Robt. Trent Jones, Owens Cross Rds. Oct 24 - Madison Area Milton Frank Stadium, Huntsville Nov 9 - North State Unified Bowling Pin Palace Lanes, Huntsville Eternal Rest By Tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of November to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, those faithful Christians who have died and gone before us but who still must atone for their sins. The time they spend in Purgatory cleanses them so that they may enter Heaven free from all effects of sin. Our own prayers and sacrifices can be offered up to relieve their suffering. One of the most commonly recited of Catholic prayers in times past is the "Eternal Rest" prayer. This prayer has fallen into disuse in the past few decades except during the funeral and committal rites. Prayer for the dead, however, is one of the greatest acts of charity we can perform, to help them during their time in Purgatory, so that they can enter more quickly into the fullness of heaven. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. AMEN
N ov e mb e r Shepherd s Watch Page 7 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES PRAYER FOR PRIESTS PRAYER Jesus, Eternal Priest, protect all our priests, Your servants, from all dangers and keep them safe in your sacred heart. They are yours and their life is offered in sacrifice at Your altar. Keep them pure of heart and aflame with the love of God and neighbor. Strengthen Your priests by living constantly in them, with them, and through them, especially in times of loneliness and afflictions, and when their life of sacrifice seems meaningless. Bless all their labors with abundant fruit. May they persevere in their vocation until the end. Mary, our Blessed Mother, wrap them under your mantle and save them from all worldly distractions. May the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation in this world and in Heaven, their beautiful and everlasting crown. AMEN. Mary, Queen of Priests, pray for us. St. John Vianney, pray for all Priests. St. Stephen, pray for all Deacons. Gary Michael (Mike) Rose Brian Moran
