We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn't take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called "Adam and Eve" after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of "Midvalley City" comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. 5 SCHOOL - SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 Middle School & High School Service Project The middle school and high school students are working on service projects for KC Pet Project. They are making heating bags and toys for the animals in the shelter. They are asking for any extra fabric, empty water bottles, old socks, tennis balls, rope, old dish towels, you are willing to donate. You may drop them by the parish ministry center. The youth and animals thank you. Nativity of Mary School received a grant from the Mid- America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District (under the Missouri Department of Natural Resources). With this grant we were able to purchase new recycling containers with labels for classrooms, offices and church. Students and staff will also receive training on what to recycle and why we should recycle! GIRLS ON THE RUN We are excited to bring the Girls on the Run program to Nativity of Mary! The program is open to all girls in Nativity parish who are in grades 3rd - 8th. Practices will start the week of September 10th and be on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at Nativity. 6 SEPTEMBER 16, THE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Often when we read the Prophets or the Psalms, we place ourselves in the first person narrative. It is easy to pray a psalm that speaks to something we ourselves are suffering or experiencing. But today's prophecy from Isaiah cannot mean anything but a prophecy of Jesus and his suffering. The Psalm as well could apply to our suffering, but applies better as a prophecy of Jesus' suffering and death. In the letter of James, we are chided to accompany our faith with works. "So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead." We are urged to reach out from our faith, the gift of God, to go further into good works to those who suffer. If we reach out to those who need our help, we are truly fulfilling our faith in Christ. HE SPOKE THIS OPENLY Just as Isaiah prophesies the suffering of Jesus in rather specific terms--"i gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting"--jesus, in speaking to his disciples, clearly reveals to them that he will suffer and die, which bewilders and shocks them. "The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly." They don't know what to do with this information, and they can't envision their beloved Lord suffering and dying in this way. YOU ARE THE CHRIST Jesus asks the disciples who the people say he is. Some say, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets." This odd answer shows that the disciples were beginning to form a rudimentary understanding that it was possible to rise from the dead. So it is puzzling that when Jesus says that he will "rise after three days," they would seemingly not quite comprehend this. But when Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter speaks for the disciples: "You are the Christ." Moments later, the rather confused Peter objects to the Jesus' assertion that he will suffer and die. Jesus stunningly rebukes him for his objection, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Although Peter is beginning to form true faith in his declaration of belief in Christ, he still is thinking like a human, and has not yet begun to see the world through God's eyes. Peter's faith has not yet grown to its full stature, as it will after the Resurrection. Our gift of faith sees and believes the suffering and death of Christ, but we still might not see the consequences of that faith. Our works arise out of our belief in and love for the Lord. Through our faith, we must not only believe, but help others as Christ would do. This is seeing the world through God's eyes. Copyright (c) J. S. North Kansas City will host an outdoor Rally at 6520 NW 64th (Hiway 45) starting at 2:30 p.m. Meet at the NW Bible Church. Liberty, Missouri will have a Rosary Rally at 9300 NE Barry Road in front of the Qdoba restaurant starting at 2:30 p.m. The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is committed to combating sexual abuse in the Church.
