3 Feast of the Holy Family December 28, PARISH COUNCILS and THE LAITY In October, Fr. Bob Heinz was installed as pastor of Our Lady of the Brook with responsibility for two parishes. The parish councils of St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook gathered then to share with him the hopes and concerns as they work to discern their vision of how the two parishes can work together. Discussing and brainstorming together positively was the dominant feeling that emerged from the meeting, realizing that we are all Disciples of Christ and, as such, understanding the importance of the pastor and priests working closely together to create the Lord s visible life and presence in the world. That led our members to conclude that we are the Catholic Community in Northbrook with all the challenges and responsibilities that flow from this vision. The Second Vatican Council in 1965 published the Decree on the Apostolate of the Lay People which reminds us that the parish offers an outstanding example of community apostolate and the laity, sharing in the function of Christ as priest and prophet, has an active part of their own in the life and activity of the church. This participation should be done in close cooperation with the pastor and priests bringing before the ecclesial community their own problems, needs of the parish, peace and justice issues, and to examine together these and other local societal issues that may arise in an attempt to solve them by general discussion. That is what our parish councils do in an advisory manner with Fr. Bob. Your lay parish council members, serving 3-year rotating terms, representing the ordained and laity together referenced as, the People of God in these same Vatican II documents, are always open to and welcome any suggestions. Pastor Fr. Bob Heinz and Fr. Dan Folwaczny are active on the both Parish Councils. Representing St. Norbert s are: Jack Billig, Sharon Cuncannan, Kathy Hayes, Karla Irving, Mark Leaman, Jim Seeberg, Megan Walls, Peter Witty, and Connie Zinkula. Our Lady of the Brook s members are: Mary Fran Bubak, Sandy Koziol, Jim Kritek, Michael Nees, Kathy O Regan, and Don Roalkvam. Thank You! Thank you, Thank you, to our parishioners who selflessly brought gifts and gave monetary donations to the Christmas Sharing Program with WINGS. We were delighted beyond measure at your overwhelming generosity to the needy families at WINGS. Little did we know when we made the transition into our new Christmas Sharing Program that we would be able to share so many gifts and donations with the women and children at WINGS..Their needs are, and continue to be great, and we have significantly reduced some of their needs this Christmas time. Thanks to you, you have helped us make it the true spirit of what Christmas Sharing is really about. With heartfelt appreciation to you all, for all that you do. Christmas Sharing Committee Thanks to all who participated in this year s Women s Club Bake & Craft Sale, and Quilt Raffle! Details on winners can be found on page 5.

5 Feast of the Holy Family December 28, Bulletin Building Blocks - Feast of the Holy Family TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today s. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today s feast was invented in In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life in the Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in prayer. 6 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 ADULT FAITH FORMATION Be proud of your Catholic faith. Find ways to learn and grow in understanding of our history and the teachings of the Church. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago) In their pastoral letter Our Hearts were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States, the Bishops identified six dimensions for adult faith formation content: [1] knowledge of the faith, [2] liturgical life, [3] moral formation, [4] prayer, [5] communal life, and [6] missionary spirit. Adult faith formation is as diverse as retreats, days of reflection, sacramental preparation (baptism, confirmation, and marriage), ministerial formation, our parish mission, and our speaker series, as well as on-going scripture and catechetical study. This year Winter Ordinary Time Our Sunday Scripture reflection Who Do You Say that I Am? led by Dcn Dennis McAllister will continue on the first and second Sundays of each month at a new time and place beginning January 4, 2015 after the 10:00AM Mass at 11:30PM in the Library of the religious education wing. We were looking at a variety of possibilities for this very short time, and have settled on returning to an offering using Fr. Bob Barron s Untold Blessings: Three Paths to Holiness. Sessions will be on Thursdays, at 9:15AM and 7:00PM in the MCR, beginning on January 8 and running through to February 19. Registration forms are on the wall racks and on our website. Our Greatest Gifts Speakers Series continues to evolve so that as speakers are lined up, we will announce their dates and topics. We hope you will enjoy the diversity of this year s offerings and will avail yourself of the opportunity as time and circumstances permit to attend one or more of our adult faith formation offerings. Dcn Peery Man to Man Men, please join us on Saturday, January 11, from 8am to 10am in Grace Hall at St Norbert. Our speaker will be Fr. Bob Lombardo, founder (at the request of Cardinal George) of the mission at Our Lady of the Angels Parish on the West Side of Chicago. Fr. Bob will share his personal insights of aspects of Pope Francis and his vision for the Church. Join us and bring a friend!!
