Pastors are notorious for advising his or her folks to seek out Sabbath time and then ignoring Sabbath themselves. It s a hypocrisy pastors share more or less discreetly. Well, Lynn and I spent some time away during October hiking/walking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in TN. A time of needed Sabbath! The Smokies are ancient in their geologic origin and contain an astonishing diversity of life. For example, there are salamander species indigenous to the Smokies that exist nowhere else on the planet. In short, these rugged mountains make a fascinating location for experiencing the Creation. Each step or turn in a trail can reveal some new wonder but you have to be a keen observer! Psalm 121 always comes to mind when we make our Smokies pilgrimages. Verses one and two kept focusing in my mind s eye as we were walking on the mile-high Flat Creek Trail in the Heintooga/Balsam Mt. region of the GSMNP. So, I decided to stop and lift up my eyes. Lynn and I have visited the Smokies many times and we never fail to be impressed by the many vistas, but never I had just stopped and looked up. The sight of tree branches against the crystal blue sky was stunning! I have included a photo but photos never do such scenes the justice they deserve. Simply by lifting up my eyes, I had discovered a whole new way Continued on page 2...
2 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills from where will my help come? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2 (NRSV) Sunset in Lerona, WV Article Continued to enjoy God s lovely Creation. I was blessed once more with a unique glory sighting. The power of Sabbath here was my help! Psalm 121 is known as one of the Songs of Ascent in the Psalter. It comprised one of many songs/psalms that the Jews would sing as they made their annual trips to Jerusalem to celebrate yearly religious festivals. Jerusalem sits atop ancient hills and, so, the journey to Zion involved ascending. Hence the name: Psalm of Ascent. The people knew that the journey to Jerusalem was worth the ascent. There they would worship Yahweh (the Lord), experience the Temple, and enjoy great fellowship along the way singing their songs of Ascent. How have you experienced God differently lately in your faith s walk? Have you bothered to lift up your eyes (or down, or sideways, or even upside down ) to see what new thing God might have in store for you? How might we sing a Song of Ascent here at Perry? To what or whom are we lifting up our eyes these days? Keep ascending, don t become stale, and remember to sing along your ascent. You will find help. 4 S e r v i n g C o m m u n i t y Things were somewhat back to normal for the Good Sam Fund in October. We gave out four food boxes and, thanks to the United Methodist Women, we have more food boxes ready for folks who are in need of food. We assisted three families in getting utility bills current, allowing them to regain service. As cold weather approaches we will receive more calls for this type of assistance. All donations to the Good Sam Fund are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continued support in this service Perry is providing to the community. Mitzi Richmond Good Sam Bingo Each month a faithful group from Perry goes to the Raleigh Center and plays Bingo with the residents. At the end of each game prizes are awarded to the winners. Currently our prize basket is looking a little empty and we are asking the congregation to help fill it. Any donations you make will be greatly appreciated. The following list highlights some of the resident s favorite items to receive as prizes. 6 I n t h e Kn o w Perry s Charge Conference will be held on Sunday, November 22nd immediately following the 10:45a Service. Charge Conference is a time to reflect on where Perry has been in 2015 and to look into the future for The entire congregation is strongly encouraged to attend. Dr. Rev. Joe Kennaston, District Superintendent, will deliver the message at the 10:45a Service. Charge Conference and dinner will immediately follow the service. This is an important event in the life of a United Methodist Congregation. Please come and show Pastor Scott and Joe Kennaston how much Perry means to you! Watch for the ever present clipboard to sign up to bring a dish for the dinner. Meat will be provided. The annual Hanging of the Greens (Church Decorating) will take place on Monday, November 23rd. Everyone is invited to come out to the church, enjoy a chili dinner (award winning chili) made by Dennis Adkins, and decorate the church for the Advent Season. This is a huge undertaking that typically takes a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. With it being on a Monday evening many hands are needed. Dinner will be ready at 5:00p so all the working folks can join the fun without worrying about how to get dinner ready, served and eaten, and still get to the church to help. The Baby Shower for Keri and Shannon Ramey scheduled for Saturday, November 7th has been postponed until further notice. Please continue to lift the Ramey s up in prayer. Women s Advent Program: Vintage Christmas During the busy holiday season, it s easy to lose track of what really matters. Sometimes even the most important things get buried in the flurry of activity. Vintage Christmas is a time to slow down and remember. To reminisce. And to reflect on God s love and faithfulness! It s your time to stop and savor what Christmas means to you make new friends and get to know one another in the process. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us Saturday, December 5 th from 10am-1pm. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever Psalm 100:5 Please let us know if you will be joining us so we will have plenty of chili. Joyce Pitsenbarger and Kathy Peplowski 6
7 PRESS RELEASE From: Susan Landis, ED Beckley Area Foundation RE: BAF Offers New Feeding Our Friends Challenge Traditionally, a significant focus of the Beckley area Foundation s annual Community Grant Program has been grants for durable goods that can be used over a multi-year period by the nonprofit charitable applicants. However, BAF recognizes that the greatest need of area food banks is obtaining funds to purchase food. It is also obvious that current economic challenges within our service area have significantly increased the numbers of people being served by organizations supplying hot meals and nonperishable food items to those in need. Therefore, the Board of Directors of the Beckley Area Foundation voted to set aside $7,500 of their Neighborhood Investment Program allocation of West Virginia state tax credits to leverage cash donations to benefit The Carpenter s Corner, Fishes and Loaves, Heart of God Food Ministry, Helping Hands, Bread of Life Community Outreach (Sundial/Naoma), the local Salvation Army and Shepherd s Table (Shady Spring). Each of these organizations has been a past recipient of BAF grants. All donations made to this Feeding our Friends initiative will be considered pass through gifts rather than gifts to a permanent endowment. As the holidays approach, it is particularly appropriate that we think of the individuals and families who are struggling to cover basic needs. The Foundation is proud to be a collaborative partner with United Way of Southern West Virginia and the Beckley Rotary Club in efforts to address this challenge. Following the WV State guidelines, BAF can award a state tax credit voucher in the amount of one half of the donor s gift to this initiative. To receive this tax credit, the state requires that the donation be $500 or more. A donor who contrib utes $500 will receive a voucher that will reduce his WV state taxes by $250; someone who donates $1,000 will receive a voucher for $500. BAF will send donors a voucher that can be used to reduce West Virginia personal income tax, corporate net income tax or business franchise tax. Checks must be made out to the Beckley Area Foundation. Donors may direct their contribution to one or more of the participating Raleigh County food banks by writing The Carpenter s Corner, Fishes and Loaves, Heart of God Food Ministry, Helping Hands, Bread of Life Community Outreach, Salvation Army or Shepherd s Table on the memo line of their check. If no designation is indicated, the donation will be divided equally between the organizations. Tax credits will be awarded on a first come, first served basis; if the credits are exhausted, BAF will contact the donors to determine if they still wish to make their gift. As BAF holds a 501-c-3 determination letter, the full amount of each gift is also eligible for inclusion as a charitable deduction on the donor s federal tax return. BAF will acknowledge all donations and provide appropriate documentation necessary for including the gift on both state and federal tax returns. The Beckley Area Foundation will receive no fee for administrative costs. Donations of less than $500 are appreciated, but due to state guidelines for the Neighborhood Investment Program, these gifts are not eligible for WV state tax credits. The Beckley Rotary Club is seeking donations in any amount for its annual Dave Langford Memorial Food Drive. Funds raised will be used to purchase non-perishable food items through a wholesale vendor and distributed with the assistance of United Way of Southern West Virginia to area food pantries. The deadline for participating in this tax credit offering is Friday, Dec. 18th, Donations should be mailed or delivered to the Beckley Area Foundation, 129 Main St., Suite 301, Beckley, WV The office is located on the third floor of the United Bank Building on Main St. in up-town Beckley. Call the BAF office if you have questions. 7
8 Enclosed is a small donation ($50) for the backpack program. Amy Crawford is our nephew s wife (niece-in-law) and we would like to remember her father by donating to her calling. May grace & peace be with you. Andy & Jo Jacobs Perry Memorial Church and Friends, The delicious fruit basket was really uplifting. I love all of you and will be back as soon as I can. Thank you again for your prayers, cards, and blessings. Bev (Waddell) Our Perry Family, Thank you for everything you did and continue to do with the loss of our father. We cherish you all. Love, Amy Crawford & Holly Meadows What is the Lay Mobilization Institute? The Lay Mobilization Institute is a four-phase congregational transformation journey that invites pastors and laity to work together in local churches. Some churches are in decline or struggling, and they want to see a new day. Other churches are doing well, but they would like to see more lives changed. Amy Shanholtzer will be at Perry on Sunday, November 8th to talk about Lay Mobilization. She will speak to the adult Sunday School Class at 9:30a and also to the congregation at the 10:45a Service. The Advent Season will soon be upon us. During this Advent Season Pastor Scott will be focusing his sermons on the book Not a Silent Night by Adam Hamilton. Books are now available in the church office for $10. We have a limited supply so get yours today. Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball is coming to Perry on Saturday, November 14th. She will be leading an Evangelism Training for the Southern and Greenbrier Districts. Please know that Pastor Scott is inviting you to attend this event. Books are available in the church office for $10. All participants must preregister through the District Office. 8
