3 PASS IT DOWN Next Thursday, January 26, the church celebrates the feast of Saints Timothy and Titus, who were co-workers of Saint Paul. They were evangelists and teachers whom Paul commissioned to oversee the early Christian communities in Ephesus (Timothy) and Crete (Titus). As you know, Paul often addressed the early Christian communities in his letters. In the New Testament, there are two such letters to Timothy, and one to Titus. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul encourages Timothy to persevere in his faith in Jesus: Do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with the strength that comes from God (2 Timothy 1:8). Paul inspires Timothy by reminding him of the people in his life who taught him about Jesus and gave him a good example of faithful discipleship in the way they lived, loved, and served the Lord. Paul writes: I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you (2 Timothy 1:5). I d be willing to bet that most of us have never heard of Lois or Eunice. Truth be told, all we know about them comes from this single passage. But it s enough for us to conclude that they were holy (even though they were never canonized as saints). We know this because they are credited by Paul with passing on a spiritual inheritance: Lois (who would have been the first in Timothy s family to learn about Jesus), passed down the gift of faith to her daughter, Eunice, who faithfully received and passed down the same spiritual inheritance to her son, Timothy. Timothy learned from the example of these women and passed down the gift of faith not as a parent, but as one entrusted with the ministry of a bishop. In sharing the Christian faith and encouraging Christians in his community, Timothy honored his mother, his grandmother, and all of the unnamed Christians before them who received the faith from the Apostles and ultimately from the Lord Himself. If Paul were writing a letter to you, encouraging you to keep the faith during times of uncertainty, doubt, or trials, who are the people in your life that he would name in order to encourage you? Who are the people who have left you with a spiritual inheritance of faith, trust, love, and service? Thank God for them! All that we do as disciples and servants of Christ brings honor to these good and holy folks. May their witness and example bring us strength that comes from God and inspire us to follow their example by leaving a spiritual inheritance to our children, grandchildren, and our church family! - Fr. Following Jesus was a difficult journey for these first disciples. It is difficult for us today. Jesus wants to teach us his way of thinking, acting and encountering the world. But it is not easy for us to embrace his teaching. Good stewards of Jesus teachings realize they are on a spiritual journey, and must learn from their experiences of being open and resistant to the Gospel. They realize the need to be liberated from those actions that keep them from enjoying a closer friendship with Jesus. What is it in our lives that we need to reform? What keeps us from revealing God s glory to others?

4 REFLECTION "He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him." Peter, Andrew, James, and John's lives would never be the same. They were going about their usual business--fishing on the Sea of Galilee--when Jesus approached them and said, "Come after me." And that's just what they did. "At once they left their nets and followed him." Such a quick response to such a radical request! What compelled these men to leave their livelihood to follow the Lord? His promise to them was that he would make them "fishers of men." Perhaps they thought that promise sounded fabulous. But it seems more likely that it was Christ himself who drew the men. There must have been something utterly attractive about him, and completely trustworthy. Otherwise, it seems unbelievable that these men would have been so quick to respond to his call. This compelling man is the same Christ who calls us. We hear his voice in a different way, of course, through the Church and through the Bible, through his Spirit in our hearts, but it is nonetheless the same Jesus of Nazareth who asks us to follow him. Have we allowed ourselves to be drawn by his voice? Are we open to a real encounter with the Lord who changes lives? If our relationship with Jesus does not transform us, if it does not change us into different, better people moment by moment and day by day, then chances are that we are not truly encountering him. He is too powerful to be inconsequential. It might take some courage and commitment to come into authentic contact with the Lord, but when we do, our lives will never be the same. STEPHEN MINISTRY MESSAGE So many times we say things, unthinkingly, that damage relationships with family, friends or coworkers. Once out of our mouth, the words can't be taken away or even explained away. How often has "I was just joking" been our response to a hurtful thing that we said. Mending these relationship can be difficult. A visit with a Stephen Minister can help you to figure out how to mend the strained relationship and maybe help to see what was behind your hurtful remark. 5 The Rhody Catholic Organization (RCO) at the URI Catholic Center will host a special event to kick off the new semester. The Worship Group from St. Luke's in Barrington will present a concert featuring songs from their new album, "Listen Above." The concert will feature URI sophomore Emily Turtle, as well as Kelly Botelho-Caton on lead vocals; with music and lyrics by David J. Lauria. The concert will be held on Wednesday, January 25, at 7pm at the URI Catholic Center (90 Chapel Way, Kingston). All are welcome, both students and members of the wider community. The concert is free, but CD's will be available for only $10.00 (all proceeds help provide clean water for children in developing countries). For more information, rhodycatholic@gmail.com. TELL THE GOVERNOR Tell the governor to protect the no-fare bus pass for low -income seniors and people with disabilities. The No-Fare Bus Pass has been available to low-income seniors and those with disabilities for 40 years. Beginning Feb. 1 the fare is schedule to increase to $0.50/ride (and $0.25/transfer). Many very low-income seniors and people with disabilities can't afford this increase. The costs of social isolation for health are extreme - equivalent to other mortality factors like smoking and obesity. Call Governor Raimondo and express your concern. Ask her to act quickly to find a solution to maintain the no-fare bus pass for low-income seniors and those with disabilities. Governor Raimondo LUMEN GENTIUM AWARDS The Diocese of Providence is requesting nominations from parishes for the annual Lumen Gentium Award that is presented to those who have demonstrated outstanding service to the Church in 10 specific categories. Groups, organizations and individuals (laity, clergy and religious) are eligible. While it is expected that nominees come from within the Catholic community, other nominees will also be considered, provided that they and their work are consistent with the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church. A nominating committee will forward its final recommendations to Bishop Tobin for approval. The recipients of the Lumen Gentium Award will be honored at an Awards dinner scheduled for May 17 at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln. Proceeds from the Lumen Gentium 2017 Dinner will be distributed to the priests retirement fund. If you have nominated someone in the past and they have not won, please do not be discouraged and consider re-nominating them. Over the years we have received hundreds of excellent nominations and this year could be their year. We are so very blessed to have so many dedicated and faithful people working for our Church.
