Welcome to Worship at First Presbyterian Church Neenah, Wisconsin We re delighted that you re here! With the open arms of Christ, we welcome those of every age, ability, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity fully into the life of the church. Large print bulletins (with hymns included) are available. Please ask an usher. Hearing Assistance: First Presbyterian has a hearing loop for hearing aid users equipped with T-coils. Brochures explaining this feature are available in the pews. There are also head phones available in the Narthex, (aka the entryway) if you don t have hearing aids. Childcare (infants and toddlers through 2 years old) is available in the nursery located across from the Library. We welcome infants and small children in worship, but if your child needs care or becomes uncomfortable during the service, feel free to leave and return as you wish. Worship bags with activities and Bibles for children are available near the entrances of the Sanctuary. Wee Worship: At the option of their parents, children ages three years through first grade are invited to follow a teacher to the Wee Worship room next to the library right after the Time for Children. Wee Worship provides an environment for young children to learn, experience, and participate in worship in a developmentally appropriate way. When we celebrate a Baptism or Communion, children rejoin their families in worship right after the sermon so that they can participate. If their parents prefer, children may be taken to the nursery instead of returning to worship. Online Connections: You can learn more about us at and Like us on Facebook, for updates on church activities. Today s Ministers of Welcome: Greeters: Deacon Nancy Beyer and Elder Erin Hollister. Ushers: Faye and Dan Wells at the 8:00 a.m. service, and Tim Galloway, Heather Miller, Margaret Lorenz, and Lorenzo Pisan at the 10:15 a.m. service. Coffee hostess: Barb Turner. 2

November 4, 2018 Service for the Lord s Day All Saints Sunday Please prepare quietly for worship and be sure all cell phones are turned off. 8:00 and 10:15 a.m. Prelude Sinfonia to Cantata No. 106: God s Time is the Best J. S. Bach arr. E. Power Biggs Pie Jesu (Merciful Jesus) Gabriel Fauré (from Requiem) arr. God s steadfast love endures forever. God grants a vision of what is to come: Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more. God will dwell with mortals, and will wipe every tear from their eyes. Let us worship God. * Hymn 326 (v. 1-3) For All the Saints SINE NOMINE 3

* Prayer of Confession (Adapted from Book of Common Worship 2018 Westminster/John Knox Press) Eternal God, in every age you have raised up people to live and die in faith, yet our own faith is weak and our commitment uncertain. You call us to confess your name, but we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live faithfully, but we are co-opted by the values of this world. In your mercy, forgive us. Give us courage to follow in your way, that, joined with those from ages past, we may serve you with faith, hope, and love for the sake of a world made new in Jesus Christ. Silent Confession * Response 425, (v.1) Son of God, Whose Heart Is Peace TAMA NGAKAU MARIE * The Assurance of Pardon * Response 582, (v. 1) Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me GLORY TO GOD (Vasile) * The Peace The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Welcome and Invitation to Our Church Life (Please sign and pass the Fellowship Pads.) 4

A Time for Children (10:15) (Afterwards, 3-year-olds thru 1 st graders may follow a teacher to Wee Worship.) Our ancient story we shall tell, till these our children know it well within their souls and minds and hearts, for this is where their journey starts. Prayer for Illumination 450, (v. 1) Be Thou My Vision SLANE Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art; thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Scripture Readings Isaiah 25:6-9 Pew Bible (OT) p. 652 Mark 13:1-23 Pew Bible (NT) p. 50 Psalm 146, Hymn 806 I ll Praise My Maker OLD 113TH Mark 13:24-37 Pew Bible (NT) p. 50 Response 450, (v. 2) Be Thou My Vision SLANE Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou my soul s shelter, and thou my high tower; raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power. Sermon Signs for Saints Terry Hamilton-Poore * Hymn 79 Light Dawns on a Weary World TEMPLE OF PEACE Prayers of the People and The Lord s Prayer 5

Sharing Our Gifts and Offerings Offertory Arioso (8:00) J. S. Bach How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place (10:15) Chancel Choir Johannes Brahms Anthem Notes from Steven Spears Based on Psalm 84: 1 and 2, today s anthem is Johannes Brahms 1865 How lovely is your dwelling place from his Ein deutsches Requiem deutsches referring to the German language and not the German nationality. The passing of his friend, Robert Schumann and his mother were thought to be prime inspiration for composition. Typically, a requiem is a mass for the dead in Latin with texts originating from the Catholic church. Brahms uses scriptures from Martin Luther s translation of the Bible, which primarily focus on more uplifting thoughts ( how lovely is your dwelling place ) than the Latin text does ( day of wrath and doom devastating the earth to ashes ). * Sung Response Hymn 608 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow PRAISE GOD (Hopson) Invitation to the Table and the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise... We join our voices with all the saints whom you have called, from all times and places, who forever sing your praise: 6

* Hymn 562 Holy, Holy, Holy SANCTUS (Schubert) The Words of Institution With thanksgiving, we bless these gifts of the earth with which you bless us, and we offer ourselves in your service. Great is the mystery of faith. Hymn 563 MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION (Schubert) All thanks and praise to you, O God, Holy Three-in-One, now and forever. Response Hymn 564 Amen AMEN (Schubert) 7

Sharing the Bread and Cup All are welcome to share this meal. At the indication of the usher, please come forward. Take a piece of bread from the plate, dip it in the juice, and eat. The center station has gluten-free bread. If it is difficult for you to come forward, remain seated, and a server will come to you. As you come forward, please light a tea light and place it in the bowl of water by the font as a reminder of the saints you have known, the baptism that we share with them, and the fact that, in Christ, their light continues to shine for us. Communion Hymn 501 Feed Us, Lord FEED US The Response The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ be with you all. Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless God s holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul; and forget not all God s benefits. * Hymn 326 (v. 4 & 5) For All the Saints SINE NOMINE * Blessing * Sung Response Hymn 600 Amen AMEN 8
