LESSON 1: I WILL GIVE SECOND CHANCES TO OTHERS! Teacher & Co-Teacher version - Perform DVD Purpose Statement: This Skit and Bible Story teaches the children that we should always be willing to give a second chance. Materials/Props Needed: 1 cardboard cut-out of a banana, 1 warning sign (see video), 1 boat (see video), several small vines, 1 rock on stage. 1 # 1 2 # 1 Lead the children through the opening activity Beach Games and/or Second Chance Carnival. logo Begin Worship Time. (CD Track # 1) Welcome to our brand new series, Shipwrecked! We are glad you came! Let s start this series off right. I want everyone to stand and sing this song with me. Now, it s a new song, but I m sure you ll get the hang of it. Let s go! Teacher & Co-Teacher lead the children in singing the song. (CD Track # 1) You all did a great job on that new song! (to Co-teacher, very infomercial) But now I have a question for you. Have you ever been shipwrecked on an island? 1 2 song What? Co- (a little prompting) I said, Have you ever been shipwrecked on an island? CO- I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. (pulling Co-Teacher aside) I m trying to start the skit. Didn t you read the script? CO- (realizing) No...I didn t...i m so sorry. I m messing up this whole thing, aren t I? Well, it s not going as smoothly as I hoped, but that s okay. We ll skip this part and go directly into the object lesson. (to children) Okay, kids, I want to start our lesson for today with an object lesson that I m sure you re going to love. ( to Co-Teacher) Did you bring the banana? 2007 Fellowship Church
What? CO- Did you bring a banana? # 7 # 1 CO- Why? I don t like bananas. Besides, it would be rude to eat in front of the...oh, the banana, for the object lesson. Wait right here. The Co-Teacher runs off stage. Play CD Track # 7 Crashing Noises. The Co-Teacher comes back with cardboard cut-out of a banana. It even says banana in crudely written letters. CO- (CD Track # 1) Here you go. One banana. Um...that s not a real banana. CO- (trying to convince the Teacher) Of course it is... just look at it... see... right here it curves...it s yellow (pretends to take a big whiff) even smells like a banana...it (gives in) okay fine! I forgot the banana for the object lesson. I m sorry. I m sorry I tried to make you think this was a banana. I shouldn t lie. Could I have a second chance, please? (thinks for a moment) Okay, I ll give you a second chance. We can still teach the lesson. We ll just skip to the end, which is the best part anyway. (to kids) Okay, kids. Today we are going to have an ice cream party! That s right! We are going to have ice cream cake, and ice cream sandwiches, and ice cream sundaes, and...(looks at Co-Teacher) What? Why are you looking at me that way? CO- (desperate confession) I FORGOT THE ICE CREAM! I am soooo sorry. You forgot the ice cream. (to kids) Well, kids, I m sorry. I guess we won t be able to have an ice cream party after all. Maybe next time. CO- Yeah, kids, and don t worry about me crashing that party, because I won t be around anymore. You gave me a second chance and I blew it! I ruined the lesson and the party. There will be no more second chances for me, I ll tell you that. Now wait a minute, I think I ll give you another chance Fellowship Church
You will? CO- 3 Main Point animation 3 Yep. In fact, that is our Main Point for the day: I Will Give Second Chances To Others! Why don t we all stand up and practice our Main Point together? Teacher leads the children by first demonstrating the main point with motions. Then have the children repeat the main point two or three times. See, giving second chances is what our lesson is all about. Even though you forgot to prepare and you forgot the banana. And the ice cream. CO- And the ice cream. We ll still give you another chance. CO- Thanks! That means a lot to me. No problem. But if you don t mind my asking, why did you forget those things? You are normally very prepared. CO- Well, I am having some problems at home. Really? What s going on? CO- It s my brother. He keeps messing with my stuff. When I catch him, he begs for forgiveness, but then he turns right back around and does it again. Sounds familiar, go on. CO- Well this last time he went too far. He broke a model I have been working on for six months! I caught him with the broken pieces in his hand. I told him that s it! He will never play with my toys again! It sounds like you were a little harsh Fellowship Church
CO- No way! Oh he asked me for another chance. He said he would be more careful, but I said, No way, no how, no chance! I think you should give your brother another chance. CO- I should what!? Did you not hear what I just told you? I did. But I still think you should give him a second chance. 4 NO! CO- I don t think our main point has sunk in yet, maybe a verse from the Bible will help. Check it out: 4 Bible verse animation Matthew 18:21-22 Then Peter came to him and asked, Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times? No, not seven times, Jesus replied, but seventy times seven! NLT CO- Seventy times seven? How many times is that? 490. But that s not important. What the verse means is that you should always be willing to forgive and give others second chances. CO- That may be fine for forgetting a banana, but my brother broke my model. My model! I have been working on that model forever. What he did to me was way worse than what I did to you. That doesn t matter. Do you remember Paul? Who? CO- You know, from the Bible. Oh yeah, him. CO- Well he did something way worse than what your brother did to you. Do you remember what Paul s old name was? 2007 Fellowship Church
co-teacher I think so it sounded the same as Paul but had one letter different Saul! He used to be called Saul. teacher That s right, he used to be called Saul. Do you remember what Saul did to the Christians? co-teacher (thinking) Oh yeah it wasn t very good was it? teacher No, it wasn t good at all, but God did something very good for Saul. The story is found in Acts, chapters 7 and 9. Let s tell the kids about it. Okay. co-teacher 5 6 Bible story intro story animation 1 5 # BIBLE STORY Today we are learning that we should give second chances to others. (CD Track # 8) Now sometimes this is very easy and sometimes it s really hard, like in the case of today s Bible story. (6) Our story today can be found in several places in the book of Acts. Not long after Jesus resurrection, His disciples began the work of spreading the Good News of Jesus to everyone they could. (7) Many people were excited to hear that they could be forgiven of their sins and have a second chance at a relationship with God. But there were some who didn t like this Good News. Not only did they not like it, they tried to stop the disciples from spreading the message of Jesus to others. Sometimes they would just show up and cause trouble for the disciples, but other times they did worse things. That s where Saul comes in. (8) Saul would go from town to town and look for people who were following Jesus. If he found any, he would have them beaten and thrown into jail. One time a bunch of Saul s friend s decided to stone a disciple. That meant that they threw rocks at the man until he died. Saul held their coats while they did it. (9) One day, Saul was going to Damascus to find more people to hurt. On the way, a blinding light shone on his face. (10) Saul heard a voice that said, Jesus (in video) Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me? story animation 2 story animation 3 story animation 4 story animation 5 Who are you, lord? saul (in video) 2007 Fellowship Church
jesus (in video) I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting. Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what to do. 11 story animation teacher (11) When Saul got up, he discovered that he was blind. Some of his men led him into town because he couldn t see anything. When he was in town, he met a man named Ananias who healed his blindness. Saul learned about Jesus and committed to following Him. While this was a good thing for Saul, it took the other disciples a little while to believe that he had changed. (12) They were afraid Saul was trying to trick them. It took a man named Barnabas to stand up for Saul and tell the other disciples to give him a second chance. And you know what? They did. (13) They allowed Saul to become a leader in the church. Instead of trying to hurt people who told others about Jesus, Saul became one of them. Saul changed his ways. (14) In fact, he even changed his name. Saul later went by the name of Paul. It wasn t easy for the disciples to give Saul a second chance. After all, he had done some pretty terrible things to them. (15) But thanks to Barnabas, the disciples saw that Saul was sorry for what he had done. He really wanted to change his ways. If the disciples hadn t given Saul a second chance, I don t know what he would have done story animation 7 story animation 8 story animation 9 story animation Let me ask you a question. What do you think could happen if you didn t give someone a second chance? (16) Let s say that you have a friend and she is a good friend. The two of you talk every day, you sit at lunch together, and you invite her over to spend the night. She is a great friend. (17) But one day, some of the popular kids decide to make fun of your clothes. They ask your friend to join in, and she does. It really hurts your feelings. (18) Later, your friend feels bad about making fun of you. She apologizes, and asks you to give her a second chance to be your friend. But you say, (19) story animation story animation NO! girl (in video) teacher Now, your friend doesn t talk to you anymore, she doesn t sit with you at lunch anymore, she doesn t come over to spend the night. You ve lost a good friend, all because you didn t give her a second chance. When you don t give second chances to others, it can hurt you as bad as it hurts them. That s why we need to remember Saul s story and always give second chances to others. (20) Which is our main point for today: I Will Give Second Chances To Others! (Story end) (stop music) Saul did some terrible things to the people who followed Jesus. But they gave him a second chance. Do you think what your brother did to you was worse than what Saul did to the early Christians? story animation story animation story animation main point Fellowship Church
21 # 9 CO- (struggling) I guess you have a point. But if I keep him out of my room, then nothing else will happen to my stuff. What if I didn t give him a second chance just this one time? I don t think that s a good idea. It could cause problems for you and your brother in the future. But before you make up your mind, I want to show you something else. I want you to see how bad it can be when we don t give other people second chances. CO- How are you going to do that? Why, with the adventures of Aaron and in our new series, Shipwrecked! Come on, let s check it out. Note: Play Shipwrecked Intro video. Island Joe (in video) Hello there, everyone. Welcome to Island Joe s Seaside Resort! I m Island Joe. It s been a beautiful day here on the island... except for a small storm early this afternoon. But everyone stayed nice and dry...except for these two friends of mine, Aaron and. They decided to go sailing right into the storm, and now I fear they are stranded. Let s check in on them and see how they re doing. Aaron and are pulling their boat ashore. For the most part, the island looks deserted, but there is a sign that is barely legible with the word, Warning! on it. collapses on the shore while Aaron is trying to move the boat. Aaron (CD Track # 9) It s hopeless! I can t even move it. This is all your fault! My fault!? How is it my fault? I m not the one that wanted to go sailing. (mocking voice) Well, you re the one who said, Hey, let s go sailing instead of snorkeling. Whatever...it is your fault! So? It s not my fault Mom said we had to stay together. Well, it is your fault we didn t go snorkeling. 21 shipwrecked intro Fellowship Church
(sarcastic) Oh, and I suppose it was my idea to rent a sailboat and go sailing out into a hurricane. It wasn t a hurricane. It was more like a small thunderstorm, that s all. Oh, okay. Well, I m not the one who got us lost at sea! What!? Who was the one who dropped the compass overboard!? Aaron, the boat flipped! It was either hang on to the compass or drown. What do you think I should have done? You should have hung onto the compass! # 10 (CD Track # 10) That s it! You want to settle this like we do at home? # 11 Oh, it s like that, is it? Well, it is on! You better believe it. Come on! The two begin to warm up like prize fighters. In this corner, we have the video game dominator, the undefeated tooth brush champion, the queen of the sweep and mop, the one, the only, Richards! Oh yeah well (trying to one-up ) In this corner, we have the best lawn mower extraordinaire, and the one who cleans the bathroom every week! And the first one who is awake every morning! The one and only, The Aaron Richards! /jamie Let s get ready to rumble! (CD Track # 11) The two immediately begin slap fighting each other like two people who never have been, nor ever want to be, hit. This goes on for about 10 seconds, as both wear out rather quickly. (stop music) I won! Fellowship Church
22 What!? You didn t lay a hand on me! You didn t lay a hand on me either! That s because I was being nice. If I had hit you, I would have destroyed you. You?! Oh, don t make me laugh! Oh, so you want me to hit you, do ya? It won t be more than a tickle. Fine! It s on again! Note: Play Airplane Video chapter 22. A plane flies by on screen. It sputters and spits in a way that sounds like a growl. It has a paint job that makes it look like an angry beast. It dips and dives like it is going for something in the water. The plane is pulling a sky banner that looks like the tail of the creature. Both react with fear. 22 airplane video (fearfully looking to the sky) What is that?! jamie (also looking) It s some kind of huge, evil, bird-thing. Just listen to it growl. Look at that huge tail! Hide! and The two hide on opposite sides of the stage. Not alone! Aaron runs over to where is hiding Fellowship Church
I think it s gone. That was close. That was really close. You know, that was actually kinda funny. (mocking voice) You were all like, Oooh, we need to hide! I m sooo scared! I m so scared! Oh, is that how it was? Who didn t want to be alone? You were shivering like a baby! Aaron notices the sign on the stage. Was not! I was just a little...chilly that s all. (noticing sign) Hey, what s this? jamie It s a warning sign. What do you think it is? But what could it be a warning for? jamie (sarcastically angry) It is probably a sign warning people to stay away from this island. It s probably a warning telling us to keep away from that evil bird-thing we just saw. Way to go, Aaron! I m so proud of you for getting us stuck here on evil bird-thing island. This is just how I wanted to spend my vacation! What!? I m so tired of you! All you do is whine and complain, and complain and whine! I d rather be stuck here alone than be stuck on this island with you! Fine, go ahead! Go be alone! It s not like you re worth having around anyway! Fine! Fine! FINE! Fellowship Church
FINE! Aaron stomps over to the other side of the stage. He trips and falls behind a sand dune. # 12 (CONT D) (CD Track # 12) Well, I m not going to just stand here, I m going to do something constructive. (gets an idea) I m going to get us rescued. (gathers some items to spell out SOS, then, out loud to self) Let s see, LOL, BFF, VIP, USA what were those letters again? Aaron springs up from behind the sand dune, Aaron is tangled up in and fighting some vines. Well I m not going to tell you. I didn t ask you, anyway. Now let me see, was it SSS? maybe... Or maybe it was OSO...or maybe it was USO (walking over and noticing Aaron is fighting with the vines) Uh, Aaron? (stop music) What do you want? # 13 Are you okay over there? I m fine! It s just a few vines. If I were a weakling like you, I might be worried. But since I m not, I ll be fine in...just...a... minute. So leave me alone! Okay! You can just stay stuck! I ll just go over here and look for things to spell out my signal with... (CD Track # 13) ( steps behind a sand dune and hits a sink hole) Hey. Aww no. My foot is stuck. (tries to pull it out unsuccessfully) Aaron, I m stuck in a sink hole. (still struggling with vines) Ha ha ha! You re such a weakling! (sinking in the sink hole) Oh yeah? Well I m not as clumsy as you are. (begin struggling more) You know what? I could easily untangle you if I wanted, but because you re being so mean to me, you can just stay tangled! Fellowship Church
Oh yeah? Well I could easily pull you out of that hole if I wanted to, but since you re being so mean to me, you can just stay there and sink for all I care. Oh yeah? Yeah! OH YEAH? YEAH! JaMIE JaMIE Both are struggling, they really need each other. (tires of struggling and stops) This is hopeless. Tell you what, if you untangle me, I ll give you a second chance to be nice to me. JAMIE (sinking further in the sink hole) What?! Give me a second chance to be nice to you?! You need to be nice to me! Nice to you?! Fat chance of that happening! Clumsy! Weakling! Clueless! JaMIE JAMIE 23 Brainless! (stop music) The two continue to argue as Island Joe comes on the screen. Note: Play Island Joe Video 2 chapter 23. Island joe (in video) This will not do at all. If and Aaron don t stop fighting, they could be stuck on this island forever. and Aaron need to give each other a second chance to be nice. Only then will they be able to work together to get out of this mess. Let s see what happens when they live out today s Main Point, I Will Give 23 island joe video Fellowship Church
Second Chances To Others! # 14 aaron (CD Track # 14) I give up. We are never going to get off of this island if we don t help each other. (very short pause) I m sorry for getting us stuck here. And I m sorry for the mean things I said. Will you give me a second chance to be nice to you? JamIE (pauses to think about it) Well, I wasn t much help on the boat. And I said some pretty mean things too. I m sorry too. Will you give me a second chance to be nice to you? /jamie Yes. I ll give you a second chance to be nice to me. (shuffles over to ) Okay here I come jamie Be careful watch out, you re going to... (trips on rock and falls down) Oooof! fall. jamie # 15 Aaron crawls the rest of the way to. reaches around and loosens the vine. Aaron frees himself and then gets ready to pull out of the sink hole. Ready? One, two, three! (pulls on three) jamie Oh, thank you. (CD Track # 15) Look, thanks for giving me a second chance...i ll try to be nicer in the future. Yeah, I will too. (kidding) And I forgive you for getting us lost here. jamie Thanks, I...hey, you got us lost here. Aaron You dropped the compass! (is about to begin fighting again, but stops) Yeah, I guess we re both to blame. From now on, no matter how bad it gets, let s just agree to always give each other second chances at being nice. Deal? Fellowship Church
Deal. (stop music) Aaron and exit. Note: Play Island Joe Video 3 chapter 24. Island joe (in video) Wonderful! Wonderful! See how good life can be when we give each other second chances? Whenever you get mad at somebody and you don t want to forgive them, remember our Main Point, I Will Give Second Chances To Others! Good day to you, and may all your sunsets be beautiful! Note: Play Crab Dash Video. Teacher & Co-Teacher enter. You see how bad it can get when you don t give second chances? CO- Yeah. If they had not given each other a second chance, they would both still be stuck. I guess it s always better to give people second chances. So how are you going to apply what you learned today? CO- I m going to forgive my brother and give him a second chance. That s great! You know, God gives each of us second chances. I think we should thank God for our second chances by worshipping Him. Join as we sing this next song. Teacher & Co-Teacher lead the children in singing the song and then begin the offering time. OFFERING song 27 island joe video 3 crab race offering logo # 6 (CD Track # 6) Good job, everyone. Now I want to go into our offering time. This is a time where we give back a little of what God has given us. When we are here at church, we worship God in four very special ways. We sing, we pray, we study the Bible, and we give. I ll lead us in prayer, and then I want you to come and give a gift to God. If you didn t bring an offering today, that s okay. You don t have to come up, you just need to sit quietly and pray to God to say, Thank You, to Him until we are done with our offering time. Let s pray Fellowship Church
28 # # 1 Lead the children in a prayer. If you want to, include elements of the lesson you are teaching today. For instance, today we are talking about giving everyone second chances. So you might say, God, we know we mess up some times. Thank You for giving each of us a second chance. May we remember what You have done for us, so that we can give others second chances as well. Take up the offering. (CD Track # 1) Great job, everyone. And now you all have a chance to apply today s lesson to your life in our Small Groups. SMALL GROUPS Teacher greets the kids as they come back from their Small Groups. Welcome back. It s time to play our review game, Ship To Shore! Note: Lead the children through the questions. Hit play when a child has given you the right answer. CLOSING (CD Track # 1) Thanks so much for being here today. We ll see you next time.
