2 GOOD NEWS Elementary Week 1 SERIES CONCEPT In this three-part series, kids will see how God used angels to tell the Good News of Christmas. The Good News is God loves us so much that he sent his only Son Jesus to earth to make a way for us to be friends with him forever. BIBLE TRUTH An Angel Brings Good News to Zechariah, Luke 1:5-24, BIBLE VERSE For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life, John 3:16. BOTTOM LINE The Good News is God loves us! SUPPLIES Bible giant Christmas card with angel on front, message inside: Get ready. -God Fine print: (Luke 1) writing tablet and marker (You can have HIS NAME IS JOHN. already written and just make sure teachers make it look like they re writing it before they show the kids.) NOTES All yellow highlighted text are cues for visual and audio slides. Assign a volunteer to play slides. The times in blue are to guide you. The program led from stage should be around 25 minutes. Print out the front of the Christmas card, stick it to a poster board folded in half. Then, each week, print out and fasten the inside message to the card. Put the card into a big envelope decorated for Christmas, stamped with stickers, and addressed to your kids ministry. SMALL GROUP Kids will play Christmas Draw and Guess to remember how Zechariah couldn t speak. Before the weekend, set the room up with stations that have white boards, or laminated paper on the wall for kids to draw on. Prep volunteers to assemble small group at these stations. 3 TEACHER DEVOTIONAL Read: Luke 1:5-25, Zechariah was so convinced that he would never have children, that even an angel appearing to him couldn t persuade him otherwise. Even as he was standing in the presence of God, he couldn t hear the truth. Zechariah was in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a priest like himself, to burn incense to God, not just inside the temple, but inside the most sacred place in the temple: the holy of holies. It was an amazing moment. And he missed it. We don t know much about Zechariah and Elizabeth except that they were faithful, obedient, and childless, despite their constant prayer for a baby. But when the Angel Gabriel told Zechariah he and his barren wife would have a son, he didn t believe it. Even when the angel said their son would be set apart for something sacred: to prepare the hearts of the people for Jesus the Messiah, Zechariah didn t believe it. That was the extent of his hopelessness. We can relate. We all have things in our lives that seem so impossible that even if an angel stepped into our kitchen and told us differently, we would struggle to believe it. Sometimes God seems just that far away. But here is the amazing truth in this story. John s message would announce that God wasn t far away at all. In fact, he was coming soon, closer than he d ever been before, because his Son Jesus was coming as a human to spend time on earth. It took months of silence for this truth to become real to Zechariah. And when his mouth opened again, Zechariah s words overflowed with a song of praise for God s mercy and faithfulness. Zechariah s story is our story, too. No matter the impossibilities of what we face, God is near. Through Jesus, we can be reconnected to God closer than ever before. He is with us. It s the hope of the world. Don t miss it. How do you relate to Zechariah? What feels impossible in your life right now? How does this story give you hope? Ó Summit Creative Company. 4 WELCOME 2-3 minutes Hey everyone! I m so glad you re all here today. (Welcome kids.) FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD (Share with kids how God asks us to love all his children through giving and praying. Talk about a global or local outreach program and encourage kids to give by collecting an offering.) WORSHIP 6-7 minutes (Encourage kids to worship God through song and dance. Play worship songs.) INTRO 2-3 minutes I can t believe it s already Christmas time; I m so excited. And check this out: I got this giant Christmas card sent to me! (Pick up the giant Christmas card. Take the card out of the giant envelope.) Check out this picture of an angel on the front. This must be an important message, because in the Bible, angels brought extremely important messages from God! In fact, the word angel actually means messenger. Let s see what this says. (Open giant card and read with curiosity.) The card says, Get ready. -God (Show the card.) Get ready? What is that supposed to mean? Usually Christmas cards say something more along the lines of, (in a whimsical voice) Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays or Season greetings to you and yours. Not (in a direct, tough voice) Get ready! (Look at the fine print on the card.) Hey, wait a minute, what does this say down here? It says, Luke 1:5-25. (As if you realize something.) That must be a clue a clue from the Bible about what God was talking about; maybe this whole Get ready message was a message about something really big. I bet it has something to do with an angel. (Point to angel on card again.) Show Series Graphic: Good News BIBLE TRUTH 6-7 minutes Setup (Turn in the Bible to Luke.) Let s take a look in the Bible at Luke, chapter 1. Here we go. A long time ago, right before the very first Christmas, God sent a message. It was good news! It was actually the same message we got in our card today: Get ready! God sent this message to a good man named Zechariah and his good wife named Elizabeth. (Set Bible down and tell the story.) Zechariah and Elizabeth had spent their whole lives serving God. Zechariah was a priest, which meant he helped other people learn about God and worship him. They tried their best to do all the things God wanted them to do, and they helped other people to understand God, too. They were good people. Ó Summit Creative Company. 5 The problem was that they got older and older and they never had a baby. They really wanted a baby, but they didn t have one. They had prayed and prayed for a baby, but by the time this story happened, they were sooo old; probably older than your grandparents! (Act this out.) They thought it was too late to have kids. So, they were really sad. Call to Action But one day, Zechariah was in a room inside the temple which was the place where people went to worship God and in that room, he was praying. (Fold your hands and pace and look up sometimes like you re pleading with God.) Zechariah was all alone, and as he walked around praying, suddenly an angel appeared right there in front of him! (Freeze for a few seconds, staring at the screen.) Zechariah was so scared he couldn t even move! And then the angel spoke! He spoke right to Zechariah! Check this out: Show Video: Wk. 1 Angel Good News Zechariah, don t be afraid. I am Gabriel, the messenger of God, sent to tell you great news. God has heard your prayer. You and your wife Elizabeth will have a son. You are to name him John. God has a very special job for him: John will get everyone ready for God to come rescue the world. Show Series Graphic: Good News Journey Whoa; that was a huge message! Imagine an angel, like Gabriel, coming to tell you that God heard your prayer; and not only that, but that God was going to come and rescue the world. That sounds cool. But what was God rescuing the world from? (Pause.) Zechariah knew. He knew that since the beginning of time, when God made everything in the world, people had messed it up because people make mistakes. When people did what God said not to do, and didn t do what God said to do, they were messing things up. That s called sin. And you and I sin, too, right? The worst part is that when we sin, we are separated from God. We can t be friends with God, unless we can get rid of our sin somehow and be reconnected to him. (referring to the Series Graphic) Uhh this is not good news. This actually sounds like bad news. God thought it was bad news, too. He wasn t ok with that. He wants to be our friend. So he had to make a way for us to get rid of our sin and be connected to him again. That was his plan to rescue the world. And the first part of his plan was that he was going to send someone to (Refer to the Christmas card message.) GET the world READY for rescuing. Low Point That was an important message from the Angel Gabriel. You d think Zechariah would have listened up! But even though it was good news and an angel was standing there in front of his face, Zechariah didn t believe the message. Ó Summit Creative Company. 6 Zechariah said, Uhh, are you sure you came to the right Zechariah? My wife, Elizabeth, and I are way too old to have a baby now. How can I possibly believe this? The angel did NOT like what Zechariah said. Probably he was used to people believing him. He WAS an angel after all. So he got a little louder, and he told Zechariah something else. (loud and direct) I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to tell you this good news! Then he told Zechariah some bad news. Gabriel said, Because you didn t believe my words, you won t be able to speak until what I told you comes true. (quiet and dramatic) And immediately Zechariah couldn t say a word. (Grab your throat and try to say something but nothing comes out. Then snap back to storyteller.) But he had to go tell his wife Elizabeth what just happened, and what would happen soon! They were going to have a baby! A son! And not just any son, but a son who would get things ready for the whole world to be rescued from their mistakes. And Zechariah couldn t say a word about it. All he could do was just make signs and gestures and try to explain what amazing things were happening. Elizabeth found out soon enough anyway, that she was going to have a baby. And when the time came, just like the angel announced, a little boy was born! Elizabeth and Zechariah were so happy. And they invited all of their friends and family to celebrate the birth of their son! And when everyone came to see the little baby, they were calling him, Zechariah Junior. They thought he would be named after his dad. Lots of sons are. (dramatic) But when Elizabeth realized what people were calling her son, she knew it wasn t what the angel had said to call him. Zechariah still couldn t talk, but he had managed to tell her all about that. Maybe he wrote it down or something. So Elizabeth tried to clear things up. His name is John, she told everyone. But everyone just laughed at her, kind of insulted like, Come on, we know you ll name him after Zechariah. Why wouldn t you? There s not even a John in the family. Zechariah was so frustrated. He knew he was supposed to name the baby John. Because just like the angel said, John would be the one to get people ready for God to come rescue the world. He sure believed the angel about everything now. So he asked for a tablet to write on, and he wrote, HIS NAME IS JOHN. (Write, or pretend to write, then dramatically reveal the tablet. Hold it up high. Pause.) Victory As soon as Zechariah showed everyone the tablet, something stirred in the bottom of his throat. He felt a tickle there that hadn t been there for months and months. He opened his mouth to try and make a sound and all of a sudden, Zechariah could speak again! Ó Summit Creative Company. All rights reserved. summitcreativecompany.com 6

7 He was like, Yes! God is so good! Everything Gabriel announced is true! And he told everyone what the angel had said to him; that he would have a son; that his son would have an important job to get everyone ready for God to come rescue the world. APPLICATION 2-3 minutes So how do you think God would rescue us? Who would God send? (Jesus.) That s right, Jesus, God s Son. Jesus came to earth to make a way for us to be friends with God forever! He wants us to be close to him. Let s look at what the Bible tells us: Bible Verse Show Verse: For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life, John 3:16. Let s memorize this verse. One of my favorite ways of memorizing God s word is to add some motions. Let s all stand up and try it. Follow my lead. For God (Point up to the heavens.) loved the world (Hug yourself and rock back and forth.) soooo much (windmill your arms up and around to encompass the whoooole world.) that he gave his only Son, (Lunge forward with your arms stretched out, as if you re offering a tray of something.) so that everyone who (Point out and around across the whole crowd.) believes in him (Place both hands on your heart.) may not die but have (Shake your head and hands no.) eternal life, (Jump into a giant, happy X.) John 3:16. (Pretend you re reading an open book in your hands.) This verse is the Good News! Bottom Line And it happened at Christmas, so that s Good News too. The Good News is that God loves us. That s our bottom line: Show Bottom Line: The Good News is God loves us. Let s read that together! Good job. Let s pray and thank God for that Good News. PRAYER Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to rescue the world. We love you so much. As we get Ó Summit Creative Company. All rights reserved. summitcreativecompany.com 7

9 GOOD NEWS Elementary Small Group Week 1: Christmas Draw and Guess SUPPLIES: small white board or white laminated paper, whiteboard markers, eraser (Set boards or paper up before program time by posting them on the walls throughout the room and letting volunteers know to assemble their small groups around these stations.) PURPOSE: Kids will play Christmas Draw and Guess, to remember how Zechariah couldn t speak after the angel visited him with Good News. Sit down and say names. 1 minute DISCUSSION 6 minutes 1. Who remembers what the angel s message was for Zechariah and Elizabeth? (they would have a son) 2. What job was their son going to do? (He would get the world ready for God s rescue.) 3. What did the Angel Gabriel tell Zechariah to name his baby? (John) 4. Why did the Angel shut Zechariah s mouth so he couldn t speak? (Zechariah didn t believe him.) 5. When was Zechariah able to talk again? (After he wrote on the tablet his name is John. ) 6. What would you do if God s angel appeared in front of you and told you big news? (Take responses.) PRAYER 2 minutes Let s pray and thank God for loving us so much by sending Jesus. (Ask for any prayer requests and pray with kids.) Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to rescue the world. We love you so much. As we get ready for Christmas, help us remember why we celebrate; because you love us. We love you and pray in Jesus name, amen. ACTIVITY 6 minutes Say Today we re going to play a game that will remind us of the story of Zechariah, because we re going to try to communicate without talking. The game is called Christmas Draw and Guess! I ll split you into two teams. One person from each team will look at a card with a picture on it, (Hold up a card as an example.) then try to draw the picture on their board for their team to guess what it is. (Point to drawing boards on the wall.) If you are drawing, NO WORDS ARE ALLOWED; only pictures. Ó Summit Creative Company. All rights reserved. summitcreativecompany.com 9

10 The team who guesses the picture first wins the point of that round. Then, two new people will come up to draw. Do 1. Count one, two, one, two, to split kids into two teams. Have teams sit in rows. 2. Have one kid from each team come up to draw at the boards. 3. Show them a card and watch as they draw the picture while the other kids guess. 4. Keep them from writing or saying words. 5. Go through each team member and see which team wins. Have one kid go twice if teams are uneven. Keep kids engaged! KEEP GROUP TOGETHER UNTIL TIMER IS UP.
