1 La Navidad cae en un lunes este año. Hay el horario normal de domingo y luego comienzan los servicios de Nochebuena. UNO DEBE ASISTIR A DOS MISAS, una para el domingo de Adviento y otra para Navidad. No se puede simplemente asistir a una sola "misa combinada". No funciona así. Para el cuarto domingo de Adviento, habrá la Misa en español normal el sábado, 23 de diciembre a las 6PM, y el horario de domingo (24 de diciembre) será normal es decir Misa en ingles a las 8:30AM y 10:30AM. Luego, para las Misas de Navidad en la noche del 24 tendremos la Misa de los Niños a las 4PM en inglés, la Misa en Español a las 6PM, y luego la Misa de Gallo a la Medianoche. Por último, el día 25 tenemos Misa en inglés a las 10:30AM. No habrá misa en Melrose en esos días. Dios los bendiga! Christmas falls on a Monday this year. There is the normal Sunday schedule and then begins Christmas eve services. ONE MUST ATTEND TWO MASSES, one for the Sunday of Advent and one for Christmas. One cannot just attend one combo Mass. It doesn t work that way I m afraid. For the 4th Sunday of Advent, there will be the normal Spanish Mass on Sat. December 23rd at 6PM, and the normal Sunday 8:30AM and 10:30AM Masses on the 24th. Then for Christmas Masses in the evening of the 24th we have Children s Mass at 4PM, Spanish Mass at 6PM, and then Midnight Mass at Midnight. Lastly on the 25th we have Mass at 10:30AM. There will not be Mass in Melrose on those days. God bless you to have the best Christmas of your whole life!

4 The Beauty of God Reflected in Nature Our Known Universe God is the Creator of all that we know and all that we don t know of. God s creation outside of this planet absolutely dwarfs what He has created here on earth. That is not saying that what He has created here on Earth is any less spectacular but from the perspective of size, temperature, velocity, and distance, God s creation in space makes us and our Earth feel quite miniscule. The tallest mountain on our Earth is Mount Everest at a height of 29,029ft., or nearly 5 and a half miles, above sea level. However, the tallest mountain in the universe is Olympus Mons (Latin for Mount Olympus) on the planet Mars. This shield volcano reaches to a staggering height of 72,000ft., approximately 2 and a half times the height of Mount Everest above sea level! The lowest natural temperature ever recorded on Earth was in 1983 in a Russian camp in Antarctica. They measured an astonishing F! The Boomerang Nebula in the constellation Centaurus was measured at one (1) Kelvin or -458 F, the coldest place in the universe! On the other side of the spectrum, magma spewing from our volcanoes on Earth can reach temperatures exceeding 2,400 F! Meanwhile, in space, Quasars (Supermassive black holes surrounding by orbiting gas) can reach temperatures of 72,000,000,000,000 F (yes, that s trillion)! Our very own Sun is recognized as a medium-sized star. However, you could fit 1.3 million Earths into our Sun; it s that large! That being said, the largest known star is called UY Scuti. It is (are you ready for this) 5 billion times the size of our own Sun! It is so large, that if you were to fly just above the surface of UY Scuti in a commercial airliner traveling at cruising speed (575mph), it would take you approximately 950 years to make one trip around it! The speed of light is the time it takes for light to travel through a substance. Light travels through the vacuum of space at 186,000 miles per second. At this speed, light could circle our entire Earth seven times in one second! It even takes light 8 seconds to travel from the Sun to the Earth. This means that if our Sun was to disappear, it would take 8 seconds for us to find out! A light year is the distance light travels in the vacuum of space in one year, or approximately 6,000,000,000,000 miles! Our very own Milky Way galaxy is about 100,000 light years across. The truly amazing thing about light speed is that by looking into space with a telescope you are actually looking back in time. If you look at a star that is 8 light years away from us, you are actually seeing it as it was 8 years ago because of how long it takes light to travel from the star to us! God allows us to see galaxies and nebulae as they were millions of years ago! Much, if not all, of these statistics may absolutely baffle our minds. But, that is a mere example of how puny we truly are as humans in relation to the universe. God created this vast universe and allows to marvel at His creation. It would behoove you to take time and learn about the astonishing things that our God has created for us! THIS SAME GOD WHO CREATED THE UNIVERSE IS THE ONE WHO IS TO BE BORN OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY!!!!!

Once again Father Martin gets to the heart of the matter. Jesus prayed with deep passion that we might be one. This courageous work is necessary reading for all who wish to build up the Christian community and to give witness to the Gospel message of inclusion. John C. Helen Keller No Mass in Melrose Mass will not be celebrated at St. Catherine s Church in Melrose on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Please pray for more priests; we need them! Please also come and help us with our very active Parish Food Pantry The food pantry operates every Saturday of the month. Anyone interested in volunteering, please come at 8:30 am! We are also very much in need of volunteers every Friday morning to help prepare for the food pantry on Saturday. This is a truly beautiful ministry, an essential part of living the Gospel and really helping many in need here in our community. The Food pantry helps literally hundreds of families in this area. If you are interested, please call Rosie Buchan at (575) for further information. The Food Pantry is currently in need of the following items: Cereal, spaghetti sauce, pasta noodles, mac n cheese, and kids drinks. Come and be a part of this incredible ministry and service to the poor that your parish operates.
