Tom Herrick our facilitator mentioned that one of the outstanding characteristics of Good Shepherd is our identity as a Loving Family. He teased out our understanding of this identity with probing questions. What became clearer to us is that this is one of the chief and desired characteristics that we share. Guests who worship with us often tell us how friendly and accepting we are of them. New members are included at every level of ministry and service because they are genuinely made to feel at home. We see a number of folks: widows, students, military personnel and others whom God has placed in His family here for their support and encouragement. Our Vision and Mission is to build on that foundation and widen the number and makeup of families incorporated into our church s life. Over the next year, the Church Health Team and the Vestry will be exploring ways to do just that. Some of the suggestions made so far are included in this issue of the Agnus Dei. We look for your prayerful input and involvement in striving to live into our Vision and extend our Mission. I pray that each and all of us will continue to welcome all whom the Lord directs our way as we seek to Reach the families of the Concho Valley with the Transforming Love of Jesus Christ! Reaching and serving with you Stanley A. Burdock Pastor
2 THE SHAPE OF OUR WORSHIP SERVICE Part Three Glory to God Having acknowledged God s presence and holiness in the Processional Hymn, and our sinful unworthiness to be in His presence in the Prayer for the Holy Spirit s illumination, Jesus words remind us of our high calling to love God with all that we are, and our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. All we can say is Lord, have mercy upon us. Recognizing our sinful state, our attention is focused on Jesus. We are assured of God s mercy, recalling and singing the angels hymn at the birth of the Christ child: Glory to God in Highest and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests. (Luke 2:14 NIV) God is merciful indeed, condescending to be born, live and die among us as the God-Man. God reveals Himself once and for all to mankind in the person of His one and only begotten Son. Our voices respond to this incomparable gift with praise and thanksgiving for the Savior. During the Reformation of the 1500 s, The Gloria was limited by some of the reformers into the shorter form we are familiar with at the end of praying the Psalms, or in times of private prayer. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer moved The Gloria intact, to be sung immediately after the Thanksgiving following the reception of the Holy Communion. If the greatest expression of God s mercy was in becoming Incarnate as Man, then certainly the second greatest sign of His mercy is that He gives Himself to us in the Body and Blood of Christ. We are reminded that we are incorporate in the Mystical Body of Thy Son and assured of His undying love and the outworking of His will in our lives until the day when we see Jesus face to face. From the earliest days of the Church s life and ministry, she has been overwhelmed by the incomparable gift of our Lord Jesus Christ. And in light of the coming of the Word made flesh, we draw near with expectant minds and pliable wills to hear the unfolding of God s purpose and plan for us contained in His Word written. The theme of the day s Scripture lessons is expressed in prayer, The Collect of the Day. We ask the Lord to grant that the truth we are about to hear will find a home is our hearts and expression in our lives and ministries. Next Time: Part IV - The Service of the Word Men s Bible Study Sunday mornings at 9:15AM in the pastor s study, we are considering what it means to experience Authentic Manhood. Join us. We continue to collect aluminum cans to benefit the Good Samaritan Orphanage in Mbeya, Tanzania. Please rinse out cans before placing them in the large container outside the church office. The price for aluminum has doubled in recent weeks! We appreciate your continuing support of the effort! Family Sunday School Class During the Leadership retreat our ministry for and to families surfaced as a priority and the desire to reach out and support all families in their life in Christ became obvious. Please pray for guidance as we consider this. Diocese of the Southwest Synod met June 1-2 at Christ the King, Albuquerque, NM. The Canons for the Diocese were discussed, and the milestones and failures of the past year were noted. Phone # The Order of the Daughters of the Holy Cross The Shepherd s Daughter Chapter ~ Congratulations to Jeannette Anaya (President) and Ruth Ann Wallace (Vice President) who were elected in June to serve a three year term. Daughters Jeannette and Nan Holloway will participate in the Daughter s of the Holy Cross Assembly in September near Jacksonville, Florida. The Vision of the Daughters is to gather Anglican women and girls into a nurturing and empowering community called to be servants of Jesus as He unites and builds up His Body, the Church. Daughters commit their lives to the work and service of the Lord Jesus. They pray daily for our Church, its clergy, the Order and others in need. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and equipped with the powerful sword of truth as contained in the Holy Bible, they reach out to those who do not know Jesus to share His message of salvation through word and deed. They wear the Cross of the Order as a symbol of Jesus sacrifice and our need for Him to be Lord of our lives. In community with their sisters, they are strengthened and encouraged to keep their fourfold life-long Vow of Prayer, Service, Study and Evangelism. For more information on the Order, or the local chapter at Good Shepherd, contact Jeannette at (325) , or Ruth Ann at (325) , or any Daughter. You will know them by their cheerful and faithful service as well as the Cross pictured above which they wear continually. This group has been tracking religious membership in the United States since So, I looked at Tom Green County data to see what our home turf looks like. In the past 10 years, the Latter Day Saints grew more than any other religious group in our county, adding 848 adherents for a 79.7% increase. The Roman Catholic Church was next in growth, adding 399 new members, increasing 2.6% in membership. The Episcopal Church USA lost 176 members in Tom Green County between 2000 and 2010, but the Anglican Church showed 0 members in our county survey data. Puzzled, I looked at another chart on the overall numbers for church membership and found that, although we left the Episcopal Church, we were statistically lumped with the Episcopal Church membership for a total of 516 Episcopal/Anglican members in Tom Green County. Tom Green County grew 6% between 2000 and 2010 to 110,224. Religious adherents as listed in the survey make up 60.3% of our county population (that figure is 49% in the U.S. overall). I am reminded of Jesus miraculously feeding 5,000 families, then quickly on the heels of that, feeding 4,000 families. He preached and taught throughout Israel for 3 years. He appeared to over 500 people after the resurrection. Yet, when he was crucified and resurrected, there were only 120 faithful. Jesus undoubtedly had personally healed many more than 120 people over the three years of his earthly ministry, and had spoken the Word to many thousands more. Those few 120 religious adherents may have felt small and insignificant in the upper room as they waited for the sign from Jesus to be given. But when the Holy Spirit fell upon them at Pentecost, they preached the gospel and turned 3,000 to the faith in one day. And the Lord daily added to their number. (Acts 1-3) The Vestry and church members who attended our weekend retreat at the beginning of June are hoping to spark a renewal of evangelism and service from Good Shepherd to our community. Beginning with the July 4 th fireworks party on our back parking lot, we envision a renewed effort to bring the people in our lives to our Lord and Savior. Will you renew your efforts to preach the Gospel where you are placed? Membership in Good Shepherd is not the goal, although it will undoubtedly be part of the outcome. Can we join with the saints of the ages and spark a renewal that awakens the Concho Valley to the transforming love of Jesus Christ? I believe that answer is: "Yes, with God s help." 6 Church Health Team June 1-3 the Church Health Team and members of the Congregation gathered for a leadership retreat at the Christ the King retreat Center, led by the Rev. Tom Herrick, the director of the Titus Institute for Church Planting in Virginia. During our time together we prayerfully engaged one another and listened for the Holy Spirit s leading in discerning our Vision, Mission, Core Values and Beliefs as the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd. These are available for your prayerful consideration following this article, as well as in the weekly parish bulletin and Service booklet. This is a work in progress, as each of us are! Please pray for each of us to seek, hear, share and follow the Holy Spirit s leading as we joyfully embrace His Vision and Mission for us in San Angelo.
