Each story section contains the vocabulary sentences (hi-lighted words) AND grammar sentences (bolded words). Near the baths was a temple, having been built by the Roman craftsmen. 2. Memor, togam praetextam gerēns, prope āram stābat. Memor, wearing the purple-bordered toga, was standing near the altar. 3. duo sacerdōtēs, agnam nigram dūcentēs, ad āram lentē prōcessērunt. Two priests, leading a black lamb, proceeded to the altar slowly. 4. nōnne mortem virī clārī significat? Surely this signifies the death of a famous man? 5. haec verba locūtus, ad Cogidubnum sē vertit et clāmāvit, ōmina sunt optima! Having spoken these words, he turned himself to C-dubs and shouted, the omens are the best! VOCAB FACTS Directions: Now that you have practiced translating the sentences, it is time to practice working on the vocabulary entries. Below are the words that occurred in the sentences. Quintus, having followed the chieftains, looked around and astonished said, these baths are bigger than the baths of Pompeii. 2. rēx prīncipibus mandāta dabat. The king was giving orders to the chieftains. 3. tandem rēx, ē balneō ēgressus, vestīmenta, quae servī tulerant induit. At last the king, having exited from the bath, put on the clothes which the slaves had brought. 4. Cephalus, quī anxius tremēbat, prope fontem stābat, pōculum ōrnātissimum tenēns. Cephalus, who was trembling anxious, was standing near the bath, holding a very decorated cup. 5. aqua est amāra, sed remedium potentissimum. The water is bitter, but the remedy is very powerful. 6. haec verba locūtus, rēgī pōculum obtulit. Having spoken these words, he offered the cup to the king. 7. subitō Quīntus, pōculum cōnspicātus, manum rēgis prēnsāvit et clāmāvit, nōlī bibere! hoc est pōculum venēnātum. Suddenly Quintus, having caught sight of the cup, clutched the hand of the king and shouted, don t drink! This is a cup having been poisoned. 8. pōculum huius modī in urbe Alexandriā vīdī. I saw a cup of this kind in the city Alexandria.
3 9. longē errās, respondit rēx. You make a big mistake, the king responded. 10.nēmō umquam mortem mihi parāre temptāvit. No one ever attempted to prepare death for me. 11. sed, quamquam nūllum perīculum times, tūtius est tibi vērum scīre. But, although you are afraid of no danger, it is safer for you to know the truth. 12. maxima pars spectātōrum stābat immōta. A very big part of the spectators were standing motionless. 13. sed Dumnorix, prīnceps Rēgnēnsium, saeviēbat tamquam leō furēns. But Dumnorix, chief of the Regnenses, was raging like a furious lion. 14. rēx immōtus stābat. The king was standing motionless. 15. cēterī prīncēps lībertum frūstra resistentem prēnsāvērunt. The rest of the chiefs clutched the resisting in vain freedman. 16. Cephalus, ā prīncipibus coāctus, venēnum hausit. Cephalus, having been forced by the chieftains, drained the poison. 17. deinde, vehementer tremēns, gemitum ingentem dedit et mortuus prōcubuit. When you arrived to these baths, seeking a remedy, Memor summoned me to his house as quickly as possible. 4. iubeō tē hanc rem administrāre. I order you to manage this thing. 5. iubeō tē venēnum parāre. I order you to prepare a poison. 6. Cogidubnus enim est homō ingeniī prāvī. For C-dubs is a man of evil character. 7. Memorī respondī, longē errās. I responded to Memor, You make a big mistake. 8. Cogidubnus est vir ingeniī optimī. Cogidubnus is a man of the best character. 9. talem rem facere nōlō. I do not want to do such a thing. 10.mandāta mea facere dēbēs. You ought to do my orders. 11.diū beneficia tua commemorāvī. I recalled your benefits for a long time.

Having returned to my house, I unwillingly prepared a poison. 14. veniam petō, quamquam facinus scelestum parāvī. I seek mercy, although I prepared a wicked crime. You ordered Cephalus to obtain a poison and kill me. 8. invītus tibi pāruit. Unwilling(ly) he obeyed you. 9.simulac mandāta ista dedistī, scrīpsit Cephalus epistulam in quā omnia patefēcit. As soon as you gave those orders, Cephalus wrote a letter in which he revealed everything. 10.servus, ā Cephalō missus, epistulam mihi tulit. The slave, having been sent by Cephalus, brought the letter to me. 11.servus enim, multa tormenta passus, in eādem sententiā mānsit. For the slave, having suffered many tortures, remained in the same opinion. 12.nimium audēs! You dare too much! 13.tū, summōs honōrēs ā nōbīs adeptus, numquam contentus fuistī.
