You will notice yourself on occasion translating words and phrases into Latin spontaneously. But enough of this! Let s get back to story. Grandma Evie is telling her grandchildren Allison and Ben about how she and Hank got to the island. Allison: Did Uncle Hank get them all right? 14

4 Ben: I knew most of them, but it s hard for me to hold on to them. They just slip away. It s not just an adventure, you are trying to teach us Latin, aren t you, Grandma Evie? Allison: It s part of the story, Ben. Grandma Evie: Hank made short Latin conversations to himself. It helped him stay awake. We heard waves crashing and both of us looked for the island but in the darkness it was difficult to see anything. An enormous wave crested and pulled us away from each other. I held on with all my strength, but when I surfaced there was nothing in my hand. (sniff) Oh, I thought, if we could only get to the island. And the cresting waves witnessed that we were very close. I called out. Evie: Hank, are you there? Hank: Ohooo some thing something just rubbed against my leg. It tried to pull me (Panting) It s here again. It s coming back. Evie: HANK! HENRY THOMAS MORTON, don t you dare give up now. Hank! Hank! Hank? (softly to herself) Where are you, brother? Don t leave me here I can see the island. We re there; we re almost there. Grandma Evie: And that was the last time I saw my brother for what seemed like ages. So, anyway that is how our adventure began. Ben: Began? Grandma Evie: Uncle Henry and I were teenagers. Ben: Wait, you mean that s just the beginning? Grandma Evie: From that day forward our minds and our skills were tried and challenged as never before. It was thrilling. I noticed a bit of a fear on your face there, Ben. You don t have to worry. Uncle Hank was not drowned or eaten by a shark, he was merely separated from me by the current and bit of a tug from a friendly dolphin who sensed our situation and came to help. Now, since we were separated for some time, Hank and I each had our own adventures. He blazed the trail of his own adventure by what he did and what he learned, and how he grew. And in the end he received, well, he was given the greatest Oh, ha, ha, I m boring you. You don t want to hear Uncle Hank s story, do you? Ben: I want to hear it. Allison: Oh please, Grandma Evie. Grandma Evie: Oh but it would be so much richer and rewarding to experience it yourselves. Ben: What? Allison: You mean go to the island? Grandma Evie: Ah, wouldn t that be wonderful? To experience the mystery and intrigue of the island, to meet the people who live there, learn their language and customs--ah, what a vast and priceless treasure that would be! Ben: The priceless treasure, do we have to share it? 15

5 Allison: So it is like an adventure game? Ben: I like games. (phone rings) Grandma Evie: (To Ben as she moves to answer the phone) The greatest treasure cannot be held in a chest, and cannot be kept to one s self. Though I'm quite certain you will someday go to Inaccessible Island and experience all this directly, for now you will have to make do with the adventure Uncle Hank and I lived so many years ago. (on the phone) Hello? Hi, honey. Oh fine, just fine. Yes, they are here. Well, of course I have. And they have learned a lot already. We have just begun a great adventure. Yes, they are. That s okay. We can continue another time. Ben: It was just getting interesting. Allison: I was beginning to understand. Are you sure we can't stay longer? Grandma Evie: Your mother is on her way. You're welcome to come back anytime, though. If you like, I can give you something to help you progress. Allison: That would be great! Ben: Can I look at it, too?
