Read the following passage carefully: (5 marks) During my trip to Pakistan, I was part of a large group. Each person wanted to visit one or the other place. Some wanted to visit Takshila, others Lahore, Islamabad or Karachi. As we sat discussing every one voiced his opinion loudly. I noticed only Mrs. Roopa Kapur was sitting quietly. She was a seventy five year old lady from Chennai and did not speak much unless spoken to. So I asked if she had any particular place in mind to visit. Without hesitation she said she wanted to go to Pindi. Where is Pindi? Is it a small town or village? I don t think we will have the time to make a detour like that from our packed itinerary, Roopa smiled at my ignorance and said, I meant Rawalpindi. Pindi is a short term used for it by people who lived there. I was intrigued. How do you know so much about it? Have you ever lived there? I was born and brought up there, she replied and then told me her story. She had lived there till the age of nineteen when she got married and settled down in Chennai. Though she had learnt to speak in Tamil and had learnt Tamil dishes, she had always yearned to go back to see her childhood home if she ever got a chance. When we reached Islamabad I noticed that the city was surrounded by tall mountains and the weather was as cool as at a hill station. Seeing my expression, Mrs Kapur quickly said, Rawalpindi is a sister city, but it is older. Pindi is just twenty odd kilometres away from Islamabad. Suddenly I realised the soft spoken and introverted Mrs Kapoor had become quite garrulous. Read the following passage carefully: (5 marks) Journalist turned author Pinki Virani opened our eyes to a deeply painful truth sexual abuse of children in middle and upper-class Indian homes. Her book Bitter Chocolate (Penguin 2000) revealed how rampant and perilous the crime is. It also dealt with how we Indians live in denial, believing that such sins are not the norm in our culture. Indeed, a nationwide study published in 2007 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development describes child sexual abuse to be commonplace. In Bitter Chocolate award winning Virani clearly talks of her own trauma of childhood incest, and underlines the importance of children being encouraged to speak up in order to overcome the shock and harm. Earlier, Virani s first book, the award winning Aruna s story, documented the tragedy of a nurse, who has been in a semi comatose state since 1973, after she was raped by a hospital employee while being strangled with a chain. In these 36 years of losing her speech, sight and movement, Aruna Shanbaug now 61, is being kept in a persistent vegetative state. In the early 1980s, Pinki Virani started out as a journalist with The Times of India group. She has been editor of Mid Day a Mumbai afternoon newspaper, and a special correspondent with `Sunday. Everyday for a whole year all kinds of holy men, hermits, scholars and nobles came and related to the priests their deeds of charity. The priests heard their claims. At last they decided that the one who seemed to be the greatest lover of mankind was a rich man who had every year given all his wealth to the poor. So, they gave him the plate of gold. But when he took it in his hand, it turned into worthless lead. When he dropped it, to his amazement, on the floor, it became gold again. For another year claimants came and the priests presented the heavenly, gift three times. But the same thing happened, showing that Heaven did not consider these men worthy of the gift. Meanwhile a large number of beggars came and lay about the temple gate, hoping that the claimants who came would give them alms to prove that they were worthy of the golden plate. It was a good thing for the beggars because the pilgrims gave them money but showed no sympathy, nor even a look of pity.
