This question paper consists of 4 sections A,B,C & D. 2. Attempt all the questions. Internal choice is given wherever necessary. 3. Try to attempt all the questions of a section together. 4. Read all the questions carefully, understand them well and then only start writing answer. 5. Write correct question numbers in your answer book. 6. Try to adhere with the word limit. SECTION A (READING)(20 Marks) 1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. 1. Astronomical events, the cycles of the sun and the moon, are very important in making calendars. Our concept of a year is based on the motion of the Earth's rotation around the sun. The time from one fixed point, such as a solstice or Equinox, to the next (around 365 days) is called a tropical year. 2. In 1582, Pope Gregory xiii realised that the Julian calendar used at that time needed modifications. He ordered that 10 days should be dropped from October 1582 so that October 15 should follow immediately after October 4, and from then the new calendar should be used. This was done by some countries immediately and in time, the rest of the world followed. 3. The Julian calendar was introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. Caesar made January 1st the start of the Year. Before the Julian, the Roman calendar was in use what. 4. Though that Gregorian Calendar is the international standard, we all know that we have the Saka, Our own official Indian civil calendar, used alongside the Gregorian Calendar. Saka has been in use since March 22, 1957, which corresponds to Chaitra 1, 1879 Saka era. The Saka calendar is based on the traditional Hindu calendar, which has been used since Vedic times. 5. The Hebrew calendar is attributed to the Sanhedrin President Hillel II and it came into use in approximately 359 AD. It is used for religious purposes buy Jews all over the SAMPLE PAPER/VI/English Page 1
2 world, and it is the official calendar of Israel. The Chinese calendar has some similarities with the Hebrew calendar. 6. The Hijri calendar is used by Muslims. It has 12 months that are based on the motion of the Moon. It is consistently shorter than a tropical year and therefore it shifts with respect to the Gregorian Calendar. The Islamic calendar is the official calendar in many countries, especially South Arabia. However, other Muslim Nations use the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes and the Islamic calendar for religious purposes. Complete the table given below: Calendar Period of origin Launched by (a)... (b)... (c)... Gregorian (d)... Julius Caesar (e)... (f)... (g)... (h) AD Vedic People Complete/Answer the following: i. Realising the need to modify Julian calendar, Pope Gregory XIII ii. The official calendar of Israel is. iii. Which calendar enjoys the status of being International Calendar presently? 2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the following questions. The invention of nuclear bomb has changed the whole concept of War. Gone are the days when wars dragged on for years. Now or single nuclear bomb can wipe out cities, kill thousand and create havoc. Already many countries possess long range missiles with nuclear war heads which can hit the targets at the push of a button. The world has two unforgettable examples in the form of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For the first time in history, people all over the world are haunted by the fear of an all- how nuclear war which will wipe out all forms of life from the surface of the earth. (0.5x8=4) (2x3=6) The invention of atom bomb has placed greater power of destruction in the hands of man. It has overshadowed the benefits of nuclear energy. Our natural resources are being used up at a great speed. That day is not far when we will not be left with any coal, gas or oil. Here, the atom comes to a rescue. The immense energy contained in the nucleus can be controlled and harnessed for the benefits of man. The device used for this purpose is nuclear reactor. Nuclear reactors are already doing a wonderful job.they SAMPLE PAPER/VI/English Page 2
3 are supplying power for ships and submarines and I also producing electricity. It can also provide power to very long flights in space. It will also be used to supply power for future colonies on the Moon if man decides to build them. Now answer the following questions: i. What has been instrumental in changing the concept of War? ii. What havoc can be created by a single nuclear bomb? iii. iv. What is the cause of concern among Nations? How can nuclear energy be used for the benefit of mankind? v. In what ways are the nuclear reactors doing a wonderful job? (5x1=5) 3. Read the following poem carefully and answer the following questions. Freedom Freedom is the right to do Anything that pleases you, As long as you keep insight And others also have a right Have you the right to kill a cat? Oh no! It's wrong, just consider that The cat has the right to live like you Right of eating and drinking too! So remember that it's certainly wrong To deploy a Nightingale its song To cheat the poor people, as rich men do Tour of the innocent, as robbers do. To injure someone to win a race To despise some and others embrace, To disobey every order and rule And down a swimmer in the pool. And shout and scream like a fool.
