THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS JUNE 2012 OGDEN REGIONAL FAMILY HISTORY CENTER th STREET, OGDEN, UT FAMILY HISTORY NEWSLETTER Questions or requests regarding content should be directed to To subscribe or unsubscribe send your address to From the Director's Desk On Someday The other day I heard a song that reminded me of my younger years when it seemed that we had so little that everything we wanted would have to wait until someday. The song was by Rob Thomas and part of it went like this: And maybe someday we ll figure all this out, Try to put an end to all our doubt, Try to find a way to make things better; Maybe someday we ll live our lives out loud, We ll be better off somehow, someday. Probably every young couple struggling to make ends meet can relate to those verses, reminding them that someday things will be better. Someday is a universal word that is used by young and old alike. For the young it is growing up and aspiring for something or aspiring to be something someday. I can hear myself saying as a teenager that someday I want a job like that, a car like that, a house like that, someday, I m going to have a pair of boots like that, etc. Someday, represents suspended hope, not just for youth but for everyone who ever aspires to be or have something a little better someday. At every period of our lives, my wife and I aspired to be or to have or to do something someday. Someday is a looking forward word. Whatever our current circumstances may be they have no bearing on the looking forward mentality. The very wealthiest as well as the very poorest among us have looking forward ambitions or hopes. Without a someday what would life be like? We all need a someday to Walking Through History Ogden City Cemetery Tours Come see the final resting places of Ogden s famous and infamous. Cemetery tours will be held on Saturday, June 9th and Monday, June the 11th. Tours will begin at the South end of 5th Avenue and South Street in the City Cemetery. The first tour will begin at 5:00 p.m. each day and every ten minutes thereafter with the last tour starting at 6:30 p.m. For additional information watch for the newspaper write up the week preceding the tour or contact Joanne Hanson at look forward to. The hope of someday is energizing and gives many the will to tolerate the now knowing that someday things will be different. For many that someday will never come, the dream will never see fruition, or the light of day, and do you know what? It really doesn t matter, because that someday dream propelled us forward and, at least, it gave us some hope to carry us a little further through life. It is very common to change dreams in the middle of the stream. It may be an even bigger and more elaborate someday dream or it may become a more realistic dream. The unrealistic dream evolves into a rationalization that the dream was beyond our means, beyond our capacity. Our rational will be something like this: It was a good dream but we are pretty fortunate to have ended up with what we have and who we have become. 1

Older couples, someday dreams, may be minimal but the someday dreams of our children can excite us just as well, in some cases they become our someday dreams. Some of us are to that point in life where we can say, in regards to someday. I haven t forgotten what those someday dreams have meant to me and the kind of motivating force someday has been in my life. They haven t all come to pass but for the most part I am satisfied with what I have and who I am. But we should always encourage youth to look to that someday time when their fondest hopes and prayers may be answered. For many youth it will be a material someday, for others it will be a spiritual someday. The someday dream for some may be, excitedly, opening a letter from the First Presidency with their family standing by, to find out where they will be sent on their two year mission for the church. Others spiritual someday dream will have them standing in the temple of our God with the one that they were just betrothed to for time and throughout eternity. For the more mature, someday maybe waiting for retirement and the freedom from making a living, to an opportunity to serve a mission with their spouse or spend time doing family history and temple work. Like all the other some days that may never come to fruition those retirement plans may also slip through our web of dreams. There are some someday dreams that can be done now. Now while we are still young, still working, still healthy, still vibrant and able to do the things we may not be able to do later. Family History and temple work are things we should do now because our someday and/or tomorrow may be a different reality than we had planned. I have always enjoyed the common man s poet, Edgar A. Guest who wrote a poem he named Tomorrow (I have edited it to make it shorter) He was going to be all that a mortal should be - Tomorrow. No one should be kinder or braver than he - Tomorrow. A friend who was troubled and weary he knew, Who'd be glad of a lift and who needed it, too; On him he would call and see what he could do - Tomorrow. It was too bad, indeed, he was busy today, And hadn't a minute to stop on his way; More time he would have to give others, he'd say - Tomorrow. But the fact is he died and he faded from view, And all that he left here when living was through Was a mountain of things he intended to do - Tomorrow. Someday is a wonderful word in our wonderful world. May God bless us with the faith, the energy and the desire to be able to do today what we planned to do someday at least in respect to our forever family. Adopt the motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission: Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason. Emil O. Hanson, Director, OFHC Take Time Out Dot Alexander Seeing a little bird - truly 'seeing it' and being able to feel for the small creature and notice whether or not it is doing alright or not; it is in those subtle moments that we share a common good for life. It is in those intimate moments of compassion for 'the other not like us, that we learn to care more deeply for all things. Our world heals in those moments. Those moments inspire 'Creativity' that promotes Care and Compassion for everyone. We can do a lot with those emotions! 2

What is Mocavo? Post written by Amanda (Mocavo is a relatively new product that may become a valuable tool for genealogists, try it out if you are so inclined and see if it can further your research along.) Mocavo is the world s first and largest genealogy-centric search engine. They display only genealogy related information, all the time. This means no more wading through insignificant and unrelated profiles in order to get to the good stuff. The difference between Mocavo and any other search engine, such as Google for example, is that instead of crawling fresh and new content (like Google is designed to do), Mocavo only crawls genealogy-specific blogs and websites, which often times do not have fresh or new content on them. What is Geni Family Tree Import? How does Geni Family Tree Import work with Mocavo? Geni Family Tree Import is a quick and easy way to take your family tree that you already have on Geni.com and import it into Mocavo. If you ve got a family tree on Geni and a free Mocavo account, you can link the two by clicking on the Log in using Geni button located on Mocavo.com/upload. What advantages does this offer to genealogists? The Geni Family Tree Import offers multiple advantages to genealogists. Those who have already put time into creating a tree on Geni no longer have to duplicate their efforts in order to have a tree on Mocavo. One can simply import the tree they ve created and instantly start taking advantage of all the associated features Mocavo offers. Additionally, for those who are new to genealogy and do not have a tree, Geni is a great place to start! You can build your family tree from the ground up and import it directly into Mocavo. Mocavo can then help you with your research by assisting you in discovering new connections to your ancestors, completely for free. What about privacy? Who has access to my data? Mocavo s utmost priority is its user s privacy. Therefore, all of your privacy settings that you ve implemented on Geni.com will transfer over to Mocavo along with your tree. If you ve set your tree to private, Mocavo will not add it to their index and will not make them available for other users to see. How can I get started? If you already have a tree on Geni and a Mocavo account, you can get started by heading to Mocavo.com/upload and click on the Log in using Geni button. If you re just starting out, you can begin the journey into your family history by creating a tree on Geni. Once you have some ancestors added, you can import it into Mocavo. What s coming up next for Mocavo? Mocavo s team is currently working to further automate the process of researching your genealogy. Additionally, they re focusing on building a better Mocavo experience for both free and paid users and moving to share the spotlight that was once on genealogy data across the web with content generated by their members.. Thoughts If you don t know [your family s] history, then you don t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn t know it is a part of a tree. Michael Crichton There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots and the other wings. Hodding Carter 3

Area Research Societies Formed at the Ogden Center The Ogden Family Search Center is establishing various Research Societies to assist patrons and staff in doing research in specific areas of the world. Each Society will be chaired by an individual expert in research in that area. The leader will also call meetings as often as the members of the society wish to meet. The purpose of each society will be to assist member of that society in doing research together in that area of interest, as well as, sharing their successes and those area websites that have been demonstrated to be beneficial in researching in the geographic region of interest. To start the Research Society program there will be four area societies: British Isles, Spanish, German, and Scandinavian. Others may be added as desired. Signup sheets are in the foyer of the Center s East building. Members will be listed on the bulletin boards and in the centers records. New persons can apply for membership at any time merely by asking to be added to the list. We have asked the following persons to chair the groups: British Isles; Sister Barbara Lewis, Spanish; Sister Carolina Espinosa, German; Brother Sass, Scandinavian: Brother Curtis Larsen. Persons who are interested in one of the societies should sign up on the sign-up sheets and include; name, phone number and address. We anticipate having all four societies active by July. The British Interest Group will hold their first meeting at the Ogden FHC, room 27B (West building of the Ogden Family Center. Time: 7 PM on Thursday, June 7, Group will be a discussion and sharing of British Research, led by Barbara Lewis. All interested British Researchers are invited. For more info, call Barbara at Collaboration Corner by Cina Johnson, Ohana Software (SharingTime is another new product from the company that gave us FamilyInsight. It has had a rough beginning but is now available for use at family history centers without charge.) If you use new FamilySearch, have you tried SharingTime? If it has been a while since you used SharingTime, why not try it again? Haven t heard of SharingTime? Read on. SharingTime adds new features to the new FamilySearch website through a plug-in to your web browser. The first thing you will notice when you log into the new FamilySearch with SharingTime is a new search box. This box can be used to jump from one section of your family tree to another with greater speed. This timesaving tool alone is worth the subscription to SharingTime! The next thing you will see is the SharingTime tree logo next to every name on your pedigree (Pedigree with Details view). Click the tree by any individual s name and the SharingTime menu will appear. From there, you can access the other tools that are winning the hearts of our users. For those of you who have not used SharingTime for a while, you may notice new tools for looking at your places and finding dead-ends. You may also notice that the Tag and the Watch feature have been discontinued. Often, a new product will come on the market and everyone will love one specific feature. As I have talked to our customers I have found that there is no consensus for the best loved features. For some their favorite feature is the Live Search. For others, it is the Collaboration tool. Yet others love the Find a Resource, Temple Ordinance, Places or Dead End tool. SharingTime is proving itself to have something for everyone. We hope you will give it a try and let us know what feature you like the best. 4

Having Faith to Let Go Emil O. Hanson We are all asked to do things from time to time that we feel we just do not have time to do because of all the other things going on in our lives. There is a story about a guy who went for a stroll in the foothills near his home one evening. He was walking along thinking about the life and not really watching where he was going and he got too close to the edge of a cliff and fell over. As he fell fortunately he was able to catch hold of a branch that was growing out from the side of the cliff. As he hung there he looked up and yelled, Is there anyone up there that can help me? A voice came down from above almost like it came from heaven saying, Yes, I can help you, do you have faith in me? The guy quickly replied, Yes, I have faith in you. The voice came back from above and said, Let go of the branch. The guy thought about it for a minute and said, Is there anyone else up there that can help me? The moral of the story is that we tend to hang onto so many things in life, even unimportant things, that when looked at from an eternal scheme of life (from above) we realize that we should have the faith to let go of them. The only way that we will have time for family and for family history is to let go of things of lesser importance. Can t you just hear the voice from above saying, If you have faith in me, you will let go of the branch. -ooooo- How does one overcome sadness and despair? We attain joy by choosing it over and over again always, & right now. Alex Shelton Problems Printing from Family Search FamilySearch Support I just received this response from FamilySearch support about problems printing images from FS: Thank you for contacting FamilySearch. You state you are having problems printing from Family Search. The work around we found is: Save the document to the desktop. You can retrieve this document and enlarge, crop, etc. from a printing program on your computer and then print all of it or just part of it. We hope this will help you in printing images. On Sending a GEDCOM to FamilySearch Logan Utah Family History Center Question: I know we are supposed to check before submitting a GEDCOM of new individuals to New FamilySearch to avoid having to combine duplicates, but if you have a large database, is there an easier way to tell who is in NFS and who isn't without checking name by name? Answer: There is a "Submit Your Tree" feature being beta tested in FamilySearch Labs. You upload a GEDCOM and FamilySearch compares your data, and then gives you a summary list of individuals. You can choose to show all individuals in the GEDCOM, exact matches, close matches, no matches and invalid (not enough information). Even though this feature does not allow you to add your new names to Family Tree at this point, it is still a great way to determine who is already there and who you need to remove from your GEDCOM before submitting it. 5

Summer Youth Day Camp The staff at the Ogden Family Search Center is excited about the recent encouragement and involvement of our youth in Family History work. Our hope is we can assist Stake and Ward leaders in the Ogden, Utah Area to maintain the level of excitement that has been generated by our church leaders. As a means to accomplish this, we at the Ogden Center, are offering brief Summer Day Camps for all youth, both mutual age as well as primary children, eight to eleven years of age. The youth, generally, have been found to be computer savvy and are able to access and learn from current family history programs and other tools that are available on the Internet. The Youth Family History Summer Day Camps will be 2 to 3 hours in length. The number of hours each group would like to participate in Center training will be decided by individual ward leaders. Mutual age youth will be trained separately from the primary age youth. Each ward will choose the kind of training they would like to have for their group(s). Mutual age youth, 12 and above, the following instruction is offered: nfs Finding names to take to the Temple Indexing Internet Research, Wiki Genealogy Search Engines Primary age children, 8 to 11, the following instruction is offered: FamilySearch Indexing If you choose to participate over the lunch hour, there is a park within walking distance of the Center where lunch provided by the ward could be enjoyed.
