RootsWizard Overview RootsWizard User Guide Version RootsWizard is a companion utility for users of RootsMagic genealogy software that gives you insights into your RootsMagic data that help you find missing members of your family tree. For LDS users, it also helps you identify family members that are in need of LDS Ordinances. In addition, it helps you keep track of which family members you have researched, and which ones are in need of further review. In an earlier version, RootsWizard was known as Temple Ordinance and Family Finder. How Does It Work? RootsWizard quickly analyzes your RootsMagic data file and creates groups in your data file that help you prioritize your family history research. In addition, RootsWizard will optionally color code each record so you can easily tell the record status by its color. RootsWizard helps you find missing members of your family tree by identifying family members who may have had a spouse but have no spouse in the data file. It also identifies those who may have had children but have no children in the data file. In addition, it identifies those who are missing parents in the data file. RootsWizard helps you keep track of which family members you have researched, and which ones are in need of further review. RootsWizard identifies family members whose records have been changed on FamilySearch, so you can take advantage of the research done by others. With RootsWizard, you can choose to focus your efforts on a certain part of your family tree, such as a specific family line or those who lived after a certain date. For LDS users, RootsWizard identifies family members who are ready for LDS Ordinances to be reserved as well as those requiring more information before LDS Ordinances can be reserved. It also helps you keep track of those family members for whom you have reserved LDS Ordinances. RootsWizard is designed for use on PCs systems running Microsoft Windows and RootsMagic. It is simple to install and use and it runs very quickly, analyzing thousands of records in mere seconds, so that you can easily run it often to update the RootsWizard groups, based on your latest changes. What s New in RootsWizard Version 6.3.0? Here is a summary of the changes introduced in this version. 1. We added a new setting, DateLimit, which allows you to focus on records with events after a specified year, if desired. 2. Changes were made to the RootsMagic groups created by RootsWizard. A new group was added to show those records that have been changed on FamilySearch. A few groups were eliminated to simplify things a bit and minor changes were made to selection criteria for some groups. These groups are described in the RootsWizard Groups section of this document. 3. We changed the optional colors used by RootsWizard, which are described in the RootsWizard Color Coding section of this document. Is RootsWizard Safe to Use? You may be wondering if RootsWizard is safe to use with your RootsMagic data file. After all, you may have invested countless hours in gathering that precious data and you don t want any of your work to be lost. Rest assured that RootsWizard is safe to use and has been designed with protecting your data as the highest priority. The only data that it modifies are the groups and colors (if enabled). None of our many users has ever reported experiencing data problems from using this RootsWizard. Just to be safe, please remember to backup and close
RootsWizard User Guide Page 2 your RootsMagic data file before running RootsWizard. This is a brief description of what to do after running RootsWizard. Please see the later sections in this User Guide for more complete information on how to fully utilize the power of RootsWizard in combination with RootsMagic. 1. Pick one of the groups created by RootsWizard that has records that need to be reviewed. The group RW03.Review for Spouses is a good place to start looking for missing family members. This group includes those that do not have a spouse in your RootsMagic data file and did not die before they were old enough to have possibly married.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 4 2. Pick one of the records in that group to work on and carefully review this record using RootsMagic in combination with FamilySearch, Ancestry and other providers to find source records that will help you identify any missing family members, as well as other information to update the record as needed. 3. When you have finished your review for this record and the relevant sources, add the RW-Reviewed fact to the record. If there is very little information about this person, you may choose to add the RW- On Hold fact to the record instead. 4. Repeat this process for additional records. 5. Run RootsWizard again on a regular basis to update your groups with the latest information that you have added to your RootsMagic data file. RootsWizard Groups RootsMagic includes a feature that allows users to create Named Groups of records. RootsWizard creates a number of groups in your RootsMagic data file designed to help you prioritize your family history research. The secret to finding missing members of your family tree is to carefully review the available sources pertaining to a person for information about possible missing spouses, children and parents. RootsWizard groups help you prioritize which records to review first and to keep track of which records have been reviewed and which ones still need to be reviewed. Below is a brief summary of each group created by RootsWizard. A more detailed description of each group is included later. RootsWizard General Groups RW01. Target Group RW02. Whats New on FamilySearch RW03. Review: For Spouses RW04. Review: For Children RW05. Review: For Parents RW06. Review: All Needing Review RW07. On Hold Description This is the Target Group of records to be processed by RootsWizard. These records are further categorized into one or more of the groups below. By default, this group includes all records in your data file, but you can also choose to select a subset of your records to focus on, such as a particular family line. Records that have been changed on FamilySearch. These changes are detected by RootsMagic when the FamilySearch Central window is open and RootsMagic is logged into FamilySearch. You may need to leave this window open for an extended period for all records to be checked for changes. Records to be reviewed for possible missing spouses, because they have no spouse in the data file and did not die too young to marry. Records to be reviewed for possible missing children, because they have a spouse, but there are no children in the data file. Records to be reviewed for missing parents, because they are missing one or both parents in the data file. All records that have not yet been reviewed. Some of these may also have missing family members. Records that you have put on hold by adding the RW-On Hold fact. RootsWizard includes optional LDS Support for those who are interested in finding family members in need of LDS Ordinances. By default, LDS Support is disabled and the LDS-Support setting is OFF. However, if you set the LDS-Support setting to ON when you run RootsWizard, the following additional groups are created by RootsWizard. To properly use the LDS Support features, you will also need to enable LDS Support and FamilySearch Support in your RootsMagic data file. You will also need a FamilySearch username that is linked to the user s LDS Church membership record. Step-by-step instructions on how to enable LDS Support and FamilySearch Support in your RootsMagic data file are included in a later section. Below is a brief summary of each LDS group created by RootsWizard. A more detailed description of each group is included later. RootsWizard LDS Groups RW08. LDS Review: Ordinances Ready Description Records that have LDS Ordinances ready to be reserved but have not yet been reviewed. Ordinance status is updated by RootsMagic when the FamilySearch Central window is open and RootsMagic is logged into FamilySearch. You may need to leave this window open for an extended period for the ordinance status to be updated for all records.

How to Use RootsMagic Groups RootsMagic groups are a very useful way to organize your records to accomplish a particular purpose. You can create your own groups, and RootsWizard creates the groups mentioned above. Here we offer some tips on how to use RootsMagic groups. To view the current groups in your RootsMagic data file, click Search on the menu bar, click Named Groups and then Display Groups. This will display the sidebar to open in the Groups view. You can also select the Groups view of the sidebar, when it is open, by clicking on the Groups icon at the top of the sidebar. The Groups icon is the last one on the right and it looks like two people in a folder. With the sidebar in the Groups view, the first group in the list will be displayed. You can change the selection of which group to view by clicking on button with the name of the current group displayed at the top of the group, which will open a scrollable list of all of the groups so you can select the group you want to view. If necessary, you can adjust the width of the sidebar by positioning your cursor on the right border of the sidebar so that the curser is two vertical lines with arrows pointing to the right and left. Click and drag the border to adjust the width of the sidebar. Select a name in the group list to view that record in the main RootsMagic window. With RootsMagic in the Pedigree, Family, Descendants or People view, you can right click on the name of a person and choose QuickGroups to open the QuickGroups window, which will show you which groups this record is a member of. You can select or deselect a group to add or remove a record from a given group. However, the groups created by RootsWizard are configured automatically each time your Run RootsWizard, so changes you have made in membership of these groups may be overridden by RootsWizard according to the selection criteria for each of these groups. To manage groups, click the Groups button to the right of the group name button at the top of the sidebar in the Groups view, or click Search on the menu bar, click Named Groups and then Manage Groups. Either of these actions will open the Named Groups window, where you can create a new group or edit, delete or rename an existing group. See the Choosing a Family Line as the Target Group section below for a step-bystep example of how to edit your Target Group to select its members. Also, see the RootsMagic documentation for more information about how to use these features. It is important to remember that RootsMagic groups are not dynamic, which means that the groups of which a record is a member do not automatically change when you update information in the record. For example, if you created a group with all persons marked as living and then you removed the living designation from a record, the record would still remain in the living group until you removed it from the group.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 6 RootsWizard Color Coding If the AutoColor setting is enabled, RootsWizard will set the color of each record in your RootsMagic data file, depending on its status, as shown below. Color coding is intended to help you quickly identify the status of a record based on its color. The AutoColor setting should be disabled if you use RootsMagic color coding for a different purpose and you don't want RootsWizard to change your color settings. The color for each record is set using the criteria below in the order shown and the first color criteria that is satisfied determines the color of the record. RootsWizard Color Black Gray Teal Navy Brown Fuschia Purple Red Maroon Green Blue Description Custom RootsMagic Fact Types Records that are not in the Target Group Target Group records that are set to Living Target Group records of those that are deceased and were born less than 110 years ago Target Group records that you have put On Hold by adding the RW-On Hold fact Target Group records with events dated before DateLimit year, if DateLimit has been enabled Target Group records with LDS Ordinances ready that need to be reviewed (used only if LDS- Support is enabled) Target Group records to which you have added the RW-LDS Reserved fact, indicating that you have reserved LDS Ordinances, and that need to be reviewed (used only if LDS-Support is enabled) Target Group records that may have missing parents, spouses or children and need to be reviewed All other Target Group records not yet reviewed Target Group records that have been reviewed and are ready for LDS Ordinances (used only if LDS-Support is enabled) All other Target Group records that have been reviewed, as shown by having the RW-Reviewed fact In RootsMagic, many kinds of facts or events can be added to a record, such as birth, death, burial, etc. RootsMagic also allows users to create custom Fact Types. RootsWizard creates three new custom fact types: RW-Reviewed, RW-On Hold and RW-LDS Reserved. These facts are used to create RootsWizard groups and optional colors and to help you keep track of which records you have reviewed or placed on hold. Each of these custom fact types is described below. RW-Reviewed Fact RootsWizard uses the RW-Reviewed fact to keep track of which records you have reviewed and to create RootsWizard groups and optional color coding. Once you have completed your review for a record, add the RW-Reviewed fact to the record. Reviewing a record means that you have carefully compared the record with available sources for missing or inaccurate information, as well as missing family members and then updating the record as necessary. A suggested review process is described more fully later. RW-On Hold Fact RootsWizard uses the RW-On Hold fact to keep track of records you have put On Hold and to create RootsWizard groups and optional color coding. The use of this fact is optional, but it is intended to be used instead of the RW-Reviewed fact for records where a proper review is difficult, such as when there is very little information available about a person. For example, let s say that you have a person with the maiden name of Mary Smith who had the name of Mary Jones at the time of her death. This means that she may have been married to a husband with the surname of Jones. If you add a record for this inferred husband, but you are not able to find any more information about him you may want to add the RW-On Hold fact to his record, until more information becomes available about him. You should delete this fact from the record when the reason
RootsWizard User Guide Page 7 for the hold no longer exists, such as if you subsequently find sufficient information about the person to complete a proper review. RW-LDS Reserved Fact RootsWizard uses the RW-LDS Reserved fact to help you keep track of records for which you have reserved LDS Ordinances. The use of this fact is optional, but you may want to add this fact to a record when you reserve LDS Ordinances for that person. You may want to delete this fact from the record when the LDS Ordinances that you have reserved have been completed. Adding and Deleting Custom Facts Follow the steps below to add one of these custom facts to your RootsMagic record: 1. Double click on the person s name in RootsMagic to open the Edit Person window. 2. Click the Add a Fact button. 3. Scroll down the list of fact types and click on the name of the desired fact type. 4. Click the Select button. 5. You may include a date and a description with each of these custom facts, but it is not required. Including the current date could later remind you of when you added that fact and including a description could remind you later of why you put that record On Hold, or what LDS Ordinances you reserved. 6. Click Save. 7. Click Close to close the Edit Person window. You should delete the RW-On Hold fact from a record when the reason for the record being put on hold no longer applies. Likewise, you may want to delete the RW-LDS Reserved fact from a record when the LDS Ordinances that you have reserved have been completed. To delete a fact from your RootsMagic record, follow these steps: 1. Double click on the person s name in RootsMagic to open the Edit Person window. 2. Click the name of the fact to be deleted in the list of facts that have been added to this record. 3. Click the Delete Fact button. 4. Click Yes to confirm that want to delete the fact. 5. Click Close to close the Edit Person window. Research Strategy Suggestions While every family history enthusiast will develop their own research strategy, we offer here some suggestions on how to make use of RootsWizard to help you in your family history research. Decide On the Scope of Your Research Determine who you are focusing on in your family history research. Do you want to include everyone in your data file, regardless of their relation to you, or do you want to focus on a specific family line? Thinking about this will help you decide which records to include in the RootsWizard Target Group. If you are interested in focusing on a specific family line, see the section Choosing a Family Line as the Target Group below for a step-by-step example of how to do this. Where Should I Focus My Efforts First? Where you should focus first depends on your objective. If your objective is to find missing members of your family tree, then we recommend that you review each record in the following RootsWizard groups in this order:
RootsWizard User Guide Page 8 RW03. Review: For Spouses RW04. Review: For Children RW05. Review: For Parents RW06. Review: All Needing Review RW07. On Hold If your objective is to find members of your family tree in need of LDS Ordinances, then we recommend that you review each record in the following RootsWizard groups in this order: RW08. LDS Review: Ordinances Ready RW09. LDS Review: Info Needed RW10. LDS Reserved Needing Review RW11. LDS Ordinance Status Missing RW12. LDS Ordinances Ready RW13. LDS Info Needed RW15. LDS Waiting for Parents RW16. LDS Waiting for Spouse If your objective is to review records for changes that have been made on FamilySearch, then we recommend that you review each record in the following RootsWizard group: RW02. Whats New on FamilySearch The Importance of Proper Record Review The secret to finding missing members of your family tree is to carefully review the available sources pertaining to a person for information about possible missing spouses, children and parents. Another important reason for completing a careful review is to add missing information and to update incorrect information pertaining to that person. The Suggested Review Process section below includes a stepby-step process for reviewing the records for a person. After completing your review for a person using the available information and sources, you should add the RW-Reviewed fact to that person s record. This will enable RootsWizard to properly track which records you have reviewed and which ones still need to be reviewed. This and other information is used by RootsWizard to create groups in your RootsMagic data file that can help you determine where you want to focus your efforts first. Each of these groups is described in greater detail in the RootsWizard General Groups and RootsWizard LDS Groups sections below. Using FamilySearch, Ancestry and Other Resources We recommend using FamilySearch in combination with RootsMagic in your family history research. It is an excellent free resource, with billions of available source records and a single, shared family tree that FamilySearch users collaborate on, allowing you to benefit from the research that has been done by other FamilySearch users. You can link your RootsMagic records with those on FamilySearch, which also allows you to receive RootsMagic WebHints of possible matching source records on FamilySearch and to readily compare and copy information in your RootsMagic record to and from the linked FamilySearch record. To use FamilySearch, you will need to have a FamilySearch username and password, which is free for all users. See FamilySearch.org for more information about obtaining a free FamilySearch username. RootsMagic also provides the ability to receive WebHints of possible matching records from MyHeritage and Findmypast to help you in your family history research. Ancestry is also an excellent resource for family history research which we recommend. RootsMagic provides the ability to display WebHints from Ancestry and to sync an Ancestry tree with your RootsMagic file. Enabling RootsMagic FamilySearch Support and WebHints Enable FamilySearch Support and WebHints by following these steps:
RootsWizard User Guide Page 9 1. In RootsMagic, click on Tools on the menu bar. 2. Click on File Options. 3. Click on FamilySearch. 4. Select Enable FamilySearch support. 5. Enter your FamilySearch username and password. 6. If desired, select Match person to FamilySearch when hints found (recommended). 7. Click on WebHints 8. Select Enable WebHints and enable WebHints from FamilySearch, Ancestry, Findmypast and MyHeritage as desired. 9. Click OK. Enabling RootsMagic LDS Support RootsWizard provides LDS Support when run with the LDS-Support setting of ON. For LDS Support, you will also need to enable FamilySearch Support, as described above and you will need to enable LDS Support in your RootsMagic data file, as described below. You will also need a FamilySearch username and password that is linked to the user s LDS Church membership record. Enable LDS Support for your RootsMagic data file by following the steps below. 1. In RootsMagic, click on Tools on the menu bar. 2. Click on File Options. 3. Select LDS support. 4. Click on FamilySearch 5. Select Enable FamilySearch support. 6. Select Check for duplication when reserving ordinances. 7. Click OK. Suggested Review Process This is where the detective work comes in to find those who are missing from your family tree, by carefully reviewing the available records. The suggested review process below has worked well in helping to identify many missing family members. Open FamilySearch Person Tools In RootsMagic, open the FamilySearch Person Tools window for a person by clicking on the FamilySearch icon to the right of the person s name in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view. Find Matches If the record has not yet been matched with a record on FamilySearch, the window will open in the Find matches tab and will list possible matching records. Likely matches will be highlighted in green and less likely matches are highlighted in yellow or red. It is often helpful to also click on Search for more matches, add any additional information that you can and click Search to see more possible matches. Match the Record If one of the possible matches appears to be a match, check the box next to the highlighted name and click Match with FamilySearch. If FamilySearch finds more than one likely match, we recommend that you not merge the other likely matches until a later step.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 10 Add as a New Record If no matching record is found on FamilySearch, then you can add them as a new record to FamilySearch, if you have enough information about the person, such as name, gender, and a life event, such as birth, christening, marriage, death or burial, preferably with a date and a place for one or more of these events. Add the new record to FamilySearch by clicking on Add to FamilySearch and then click on Add to FamilySearch in the confirmation window that opens. How to Handle Living Persons You may want to include information about living persons in your RootsMagic data file, but we do not recommend that you add living persons to FamilySearch, except for your own personal record and those living persons necessary to link you to your deceased ancestors. In FamilySearch, records for persons that are marked as living are visible only to the person who added them. Compare Records After the record is matched with FamilySearch click on the Share tab in the FamilySearch Person Tools window. Compare the information in the My RootsMagic Person window with the My FamilySearch Person window to verify that the records are actually a match. If you conclude that they are not a match, click UnMatch and then Yes on the confirmation window that opens to unlink the records. If they are a match, you can copy information in your RootsMagic record to the linked FamilySearch record or vice versa. If you find conflicting information or information that seems doubtful, you should carefully consider the information found in available sources, as described below, before replacing the existing information in your RootsMagic data file or the existing information on FamilySearch, since one or the other may be inaccurate. Check Previously Attached Sources In RootsMagic, open the FamilySearch Person Tools window for a record by clicking on the FamilySearch icon to the right of the person s name in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view and click on the Sources tab. Review any sources that may have been previously attached to the record in FamilySearch to verify that they are attached to the records of the correct person or persons, if they are deceased, and to add or update the information in your RootsMagic record and on the FamilySearch record, as needed. Open the attached source by clicking on the small i icon to the right of the source and clicking on the Click to view record link, if available. This will open that source in FamilySearch. We strongly recommend that you examine the actual image of the source document, if available, and not just the indexed information. The image will often provide additional information about the person or other family members, or you may find that it was incorrectly indexed. If you discover missing family members in the record, add them to your RootsMagic data file and to FamilySearch, if they are deceased. If you find that the record has been attached to the incorrect person, detach the record and attach it to the correct person, if possible. Check FamilySearch WebHints With RootsMagic in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view, check for the lightbulb icon to the right of the person s name. If the lightbulb icon is yellow, this indicates that there are pending WebHints. Click on the yellow lightbulb icon, if it is there, and then click on the link to pending FamilySearch WebHints, if there are any. This will open the Hints window for this record on FamilySearch. Click Review and Attach for each record hint and review the record, including the image of the source document, if it is available, to determine whether it actually pertains to this person. If it is not a match, click Not a Match and give a reason why it is not a match. If it is a match, attach this source to the records of any deceased persons shown in the record. Add any new information from the record to your RootsMagic record and to FamilySearch. As mentioned, it is important to view the image of the source document, if available, since the indexed information may not be accurate and the image often includes additional information that was not indexed. If you discover missing family members in the record, add them to your RootsMagic data file and to FamilySearch, if they are deceased.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 11 Search for Additional Records on FamilySearch In RootsMagic, open the FamilySearch Person Tools window by clicking on the FamilySearch icon to the right of the person s name in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view. Click the Share data tab and then click the Show on FamilyTree button. This will open the record for the person on FamilySearch. In the FamilySearch person record, click on the FamilySearch icon in the Search Records section to search for other records that were not included in the hinted records and that have not been previously attached to the record in FamilySearch. Searching for relevant records relating to a person s birth, christening, census, military service, marriage, death, burial, and obituary often reveal missing family members, as well as details of their life events. Learn to use the FamilySearch search functions effectively to find all the matching records you can. As above, review the records found to see if they are a match. If they are, attach the source to any deceased persons in the record, and add or update the information in your RootsMagic record and on FamilySearch. Be sure to review the image of the source document, if available. If you discover missing family members in the record, add them to your RootsMagic data file and to FamilySearch, if they are deceased. Check for Additional WebHints With RootsMagic in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view, check for the lightbulb icon to the right of the person s name. If the lightbulb icon is yellow, this indicates that there are still pending WebHints. Click on the yellow lightbulb icon, if it is there, and then click on the link(s) to any pending WebHints in FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage and Findmypast, if enabled, to see if there are any additional records found in these hints that you have not previously found. Search for Records in Ancestry We recommend also searching for hints and records in Ancestry, if you have an Ancestry account. Often you will find additional records not found elsewhere. We recommend that you create a family tree on Ancestry, so that Ancestry can search for hints and records including the context of their family members, which will often yield better results. On Ancestry, each user builds their own tree and those that are shared publicly can often help you benefit from other s research. However, it is important to verify the accuracy of the information found on public trees as some are better than others. RootsMagic provides the ability to sync your data file with an Ancestry tree and we recommend that you utilize this feature. Find and Merge Additional Matches on FamilySearch Now it is time to search for additional matches on FamilySearch and merge them, as appropriate. Merging can be a tricky process, so care should be taken to only merge those records that truly are a match. When in doubt, do not merge the records until you are confident that they are matching records. Also, FamilySearch only allows records with matching genders and that are both marked as deceased to be merged. In RootsMagic, open the FamilySearch Person Tools window by clicking on the FamilySearch icon to the right of the person s name in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view. Click on the Find matches tab, which will display any possible matches. Likely matches will be highlighted in green and less likely matches are highlighted in yellow or red. It is often helpful to also click on Search for more matches, add any additional information that you can and click Search to see more possible matches. If you find a likely match, select the checkbox to the left of the name and then click the Review merge button. A FamilySearch Merge window will open so you can carefully compare the two records to make sure they are a match. If it is not a match, click Cancel. If it is a match, select which facts from the original record and the record to be merged should be retained in the merged record and click Merge to complete the merge. Repeat this process if multiple matching records are found. If the merge fails, you can try merging the records on the FamilySearch website, as some merges will only work on the website. In some cases, records cannot be merged without help from FamilySearch Support.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 12 Review LDS Ordinances The suggestions in this section apply only if you have enabled LDS Support in RootsMagic and RootsWizard. In RootsMagic, open the FamilySearch Person Tools window by clicking on the FamilySearch icon to the right of the person s name in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view and then click on the Ordinances tab. Compare the Unofficial Ordinances in RootsMagic with the Official FamilySearch Ordinances. Select any completed LDS Ordinances on FamilySearch that are missing from RootsMagic and click Copy to RootsMagic. The following step is optional, but it will help to better categorize the current status of each LDS Ordinance. For any LDS Ordinances that are shown on FamilySearch as Reserved or In Progress, click the Edit ordinances in RootsMagic button, click the Status button to the right of the ordinance and click Submitted. This will add this LDS Ordinance fact to your RootsMagic data file and will enable RootsWizard to place the record in the correct LDS Ordinance status groups the next time you run RootsWizard. You may also want to complete this step for the person's parents and any spouses, so that the status of their sealing to parents and sealing to spouses can be properly tracked. Add the RW-Reviewed Fact After completing the review of the record, add the RW-Reviewed fact to the person s record in RootsMagic, which will ensure that this record is included in the correct groups the next time you run RootsWizard. RootsWizard General Groups This section describes each of the general groups created by RootsWizard in your RootsMagic data file, including the purpose of the group and any suggested strategy for working with the records in that group. Only the groups that have records in them will be created by RootsWizard, so, if you do not have some of the groups shown, it is because those groups were empty the last time you ran RootsWizard. Each time you run RootsWizard, the groups will be created as needed and updated with the current information from your RootsMagic data file. RW01. Target Group The RW01. Target Group, also referred to here as the Target Group, includes the records that RootsWizard categorizes into all of the other groups. The records that are not in this group are excluded from the other groups. This group will automatically include all of the records in the RootsMagic data file if the RootsWizard AutoTarget setting is ON, which is the default setting. If you would like to focus on a subset of the records in your data file instead, such as a particular family line, you can use RootsMagic to edit the Target Group, after it has been initially created, to include the desired subset of records. Then, run RootsWizard with AutoTarget set to OFF to process the Target Group records that you have selected. A step-by-step example of how to select a particular family line as your Target Group is found in the Choosing a Family Line as the Target Group Example section below. RW02. Whats New on FamilySearch These are the records included in the What s New section of the FamilySearch Central window in RootsMagic, indicating that they have been modified on FamilySearch. Records are selected using these criteria: the record has been modified on FamilySearch and they are members of the Target Group. Records are excluded from this group if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled. RW03. Review for Spouses This group includes the records of those that need to be reviewed for possible missing spouses, because they do not have a spouse in the data file and they did not die before they could have married. Carefully reviewing the members in this group will often result in finding missing members of your family tree.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 13 Records are selected using these criteria: they did not die before age 14 and so they could have married, they have no spouse in the data file, they are members of the Target Group and they do not have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date), if they have the RW-On Hold fact, or if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled. RW04. Review for Children This group includes the records of those that need to be reviewed for possible missing children, because they have a spouse in the data file, but they do not have any children in the data file. Carefully reviewing the members in this group will often result in finding missing members of your family tree. Records are selected using these criteria: they have a spouse but no children in the data file, they are members of the Target Group and they do not have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date), if they have the RW-On Hold fact, or if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled. RW05. Review for Parents This group includes the records of those that need to be reviewed for missing parents, because they are missing one or both parents in the data file. Carefully reviewing the members in this group will often result in finding missing members of your family tree. Records are selected using these criteria: they are missing one or both parents in the data file, they are members of the Target Group and they do not have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date), if they have the RW-On Hold fact, or if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled. RW06. Review: All Needing Review This group includes all records of those that need to be reviewed. This group includes those in the previous three groups, which are considered a higher priority, but carefully reviewing the members in this group will also often result in finding missing members of your family tree. Records are selected using these criteria: they are members of the Target Group and do not have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date), if they have the RW-On Hold fact, or if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled. RW07. On Hold This group includes all records of those that have been placed On Hold. Check these records again later to see if the reason why they were placed On Hold no longer applies. If so, delete the RW-On Hold fact and complete a careful review of the record. Records are selected using these criteria: they are members of the Target Group and they have the RW- On Hold fact. RootsWizard LDS Groups This section describes each of the LDS groups created by RootsWizard in your RootsMagic data file when LDS Support is enabled, including the purpose of the group and any suggested strategy for working with the records in that group. These groups are intended to help you identify members of your family tree that are in need of LDS Ordinances and to track the progress of LDS Ordinance completion. Only the groups that have records in them will be created by RootsWizard, so, if you do not have some of the groups shown, it is because those groups were empty the last time you ran RootsWizard. Each time you run RootsWizard, the groups will be created as needed and updated with the current information from your RootsMagic data file.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 14 RW08. LDS Review: Ordinances Ready This group includes the records of those that need to be reviewed and who have LDS Ordinances that need to be completed. Review these records before reserving LDS Ordinances. It is especially important to check for duplicate records on FamilySearch for this person to avoid duplication in LDS Ordinances wherever possible. After reviewing these records, they are ready for LDS Ordinances to be reserved. Records are selected using these criteria: they have an LDS Ordinance status of Ready, they are members of the Target Group and they do not have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date), if they have the RW-On Hold fact, or if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled. RW09. LDS Review: Info Needed This group includes the records of those that need to be reviewed and where additional information is required before LDS Ordinances can be reserved. Review these records for the information needed before LDS Ordinances can be reserved. After you find the necessary information and review these records, they are ready for LDS Ordinances to be reserved. Again, it is especially important to check for duplicate records on FamilySearch for this person to avoid duplication in LDS Ordinances wherever possible. Records that have the LDS Ordinance status of Needs Info are lacking the basic information needed to be eligible for LDS Ordinances, such as gender, a date for a birth, christening, death, burial or marriage event and a place for one of these events. They may also have the LDS Ordinance status of Needs Info if they need the LDS Sealing to Parents Ordinance and one or more of their parents are lacking the basic information needed for LDS Ordinances to be reserved. In this case, you will need to find the necessary information for their parents. When entering the information needed, the date can be an estimate or a date such as Before 1850 and the location can be as general as a country, however, the more accurate you can be, the better. If little or no information is available, you may want to place the record On Hold, by adding the RW-On Hold fact until more information can be found. Records are selected using these criteria: they have an LDS Ordinance status of Needs Info, they are members of the Target Group and they do not have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date), if they have the RW-On Hold fact, or if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled. RW10. LDS Reserved Needing Review This group includes the records of those for which LDS Ordinances have been reserved, as shown by having the RW-LDS Reserved fact, and that have not been reviewed. Records are selected using these criteria: they have the RW-LDS Reserved fact and they are members of the Target Group. Records are excluded from this group if they have the RW-On Hold fact. RW11. LDS Ordinance Status Missing This group includes the records of those that do not yet have an LDS Ordinance status in the data file. The LDS Ordinance status is used in creating RootsWizard LDS Groups and optional colors. To update the LDS Ordinance status for the record, open the RootsMagic FamilySearch Person Tools window by clicking on the FamilySearch icon to the right of the person s name in the Pedigree, Family or Descendants view and then closing the window. This will allow the record to be included in the appropriate groups the next time you run RootsWizard. See the Updating LDS Ordinance Status section below for more information about a procedure for updating the LDS Ordinance for all records in your data file that are linked with FamilySearch. Records are selected using these criteria: they have an LDS Ordinance status of None and they are members of the Target Group. Records are excluded from this group if they have any events before the year specified in the DateLimit setting, if enabled.
RootsWizard User Guide Page 15 RW12. LDS Ordinances Ready This group includes the records of those that have been reviewed and are ready for one or more LDS Ordinances to be reserved. Records are selected using these criteria: they are members of the Target Group, they have the LDS Ordinance status of Ready and they have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date) or if they have the RW-On Hold fact. In addition, records are evaluated to determine if they are ready for each LDS ordinance and they are excluded if there are no ordinances for which they are currently eligible. They are not considered eligible for LDS Baptism, LDS Confirmation, LDS Initiatory or LDS Endowment ordinances if they died before the age of eight. They are considered eligible for the LDS Sealing to Spouse ordinance if, in addition to the criteria previously mentioned, they have the LDS Baptism, LDS Confirmation, LDS Initiatory and LDS Endowment facts and do not have the LDS Sealing to Spouse fact in the data file for one or more marriages. However, they are excluded from eligibility for the LDS Sealing to Spouse ordinance if the spouse to which they need to be sealed was born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date) or is lacking the LDS Baptism, LDS Confirmation, LDS Initiatory and LDS Endowment facts in the data file. They are considered eligible for the LDS Sealing to Parents ordinance if, in addition to the criteria previously mentioned, they do not have the LDS Sealing to Parents fact in the data file. However, they are excluded from eligibility for the LDS Sealing to Parents ordinance if the parents to which they need to be sealed do not have the LDS Sealing to Spouse fact in the data file for that couple. RW13. LDS Info Needed This group includes the records of those that have been reviewed and where additional information is still required before LDS Ordinances can be reserved. Review these records further for the information needed before LDS Ordinances can be reserved. After you find the necessary information, they are ready for LDS Ordinances to be reserved. Records are selected using these criteria: they are members of the Target Group, they have the LDS Ordinance status of Needs Info, and they have the RW-Reviewed fact. Records are excluded from this group if they have a status of Living, were born less than 110 years ago (if they have a birth date), or they have the RW-On Hold fact. RW14. LDS Ordinances Reserved This group includes the records of those for whom you have reserved LDS Ordinances. Use this group to track those for whom you have reserved LDS Ordinances. Records are selected using these criteria: they are members of the Target Group and they have the RW- LDS Reserved fact. RW15. LDS Waiting for Parents This group includes the records of those who are waiting for LDS Sealing to Parents because their parents need LDS Sealing to Spouse first. Review the records of their parents and complete the needed LDS ordinances before reserving LDS Sealing to Parents.
