3 Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 3 Men In Mission Annual Christmas Dinner and Fundraiser The Men in Mission Annual Christmas Dinner and Fundraiser will take place Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in Epiphany Center. This is the main fundraiser for the entire year with emphasis being placed on helping needy families at Christmastime. Through this event we provide families in need with food, clothing, and gifts for children. Over 30 people received help from us last year at Christmas because of the generosity of our congregation and the Elmhurst business community. Throughout the year we also provide funds for medical, utility, and housing expenses to those in need, and to Epiphany organizations that assist the needy, to the extent we are able to do so. Tickets are $15.00 per person and will be on sale Saturdays and Sundays November 25 and 26, December 2 and 3, and December 9 and 10. This is an adult-only event. A Christmas tree will be decorated and donated to a family in need. Ornaments for the tree would be appreciated. If you are unable to attend the dinner/fundraiser but would like to make a donation, we accept cash or checks made out to Men In Mission. We honor requests for anonymity, if desired. If you have any questions please contact the co-chairmen of Men In Mission: Bill Friberg at (630) or Tom Connolly at (630) or speak to any of the Men In Mission board members: Brendan Connor, Phil Darling, Dave Norquist, Gary Sanders, Roy Schroeder, Sr., Roy Schroeder, Jr.
4 Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 4 Year-End Offerings Reminder As we gather for worship the last few weeks of the year, we ask that you consider your annual giving commitment for Your contributions not only help the church meet its financial obligations, but if received or mailed by December 31, may also increase your tax deduction for charitable contributions. In addition to regular offerings at worship throughout the month of December, you may also drop off your offerings at the church office through Sunday, December 31, or if it s more convenient, via mail. Please note that mailings must be postmarked on or before December 31 to be considered part of 2017 offerings and reflected as such on your statement of giving for God s Global Barnyard Results Three goats, four pigs, five honey bee hives, two sheep, one cow, twelve groups of chicks, and one fish farm is what our Sunday school students have decided to donate to the ELCA World Hunger fund with the over $1500 that was raised during our Gods Global Barnyard campaign! Check out the menagerie in the Sunday school hallway. Thank you to everyone who collected their coins in the piggy and barnyard banks and made a donation! Counter Needed The finance committee is seeking a volunteer to assist with the offering counting process after the 9:30 a.m. service, typically once per month. If interested, please contact Jack Graham at Jack.Graham@EpiphanyElmnhurst.org or (630) or Ted Mandigo at tedmandigo@trmandigo.com. Help Wanted Help is needed in the nursery on Thursday mornings from 8:00-9:00 a.m. from January 18 - April 26, Amy Pilny, Cleo Tengroth, and Sue Wilson graciously give their time to the moms of Praying For Our Children. They watch the babies, preschoolers, and afternoon kindergartners while the moms pray on Thursday mornings. Sue's work schedule shifts after the New Year and we will need to find a volunteer to fill in for her. Sue, thank you for making the kids feel welcomed and allowing the moms to pray! You will be missed! If you are interested and available, please contact Amy Wilson at amykwil33@comcast.net or (312)
5 Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 5 An Update From David Zijan of Father s Divine Love Ministry 1. We are buying 1 day-old chicks and will brood them for 8 weeks. 2. The brooder will be heated for the necessary warmth 24/7 for 8 weeks. 3. The floor is made of timber and the joints are sealed with iron rings. The bottom deck has concrete and we will put 4 inches of saw dust or coffee husks litter and the upper deck is a wooden floor where we add 4 inches of coffee husks for the deep litter. 4. The Land case is pretty much a settled matter. By Christmas I will sent you photos. We are looking forward to using the land to grow crops. 5. We are all doing well, except for Margaret (Sarah's mum). She has been bed-ridden for 5 years this month and is at the tail end of it. She hurts a great deal but she is a joy to have for us and for the children. Our own kids i.e Rapha (13), Melody (11), Maranatha (9), and Mehitabel (7), our 2 foster daughters- Amulah (12), Anisha (9), and my nephew (20) are all doing well in school. Abbey (20) is in university now pursuing a BA in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (1st year). Rapha Completed Elementary and will be a High Schooler as of February. The others are still in elementary school. Sarah is done with her Masters of Organizational Leadership and Management save for submitting her research paper. I am 3 semesters (1.5 years) in my LLB, still 5 semesters (2.5 years) to go. I will be done in 2020 with the Bachelors, and then decide whether to go for the Bar, or LLM. So far so good and am maintaining a 3.6 CGPA so far which in Law School given my immense responsibilities is decent. It's a 2nd Class Upper so far. The Bases are going well. Rapha and Peniel Children's Havens are home to 17 tertiary and university-going young adults, and 39 Children between years old respectively. We have been able as of last week to pay up to $5,000usd in University Tuitions for 10 beneficiaries in the disciplines of Law (Idembe David not me), Orthopedics, Software Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, Procurement and Service chain management (2), Bachelor of Business Administration, Hospitality and Hotel Management, Plumbing, et al. The Church is running well also. We have had it all; Baptisms, Weddings, Confirmations, Funerals among others. We continue to do work in advocating for the rights of Children through the Child Ambassadors, and Widow Household Economic Empowerment among others. We Hope that you, and your families are doing well through His Grace. Blessings, David
6 Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 6 Making A Difference In Your Offerings Gifts of Appreciated Securities: Did you know that you can contribute appreciated securities tax-free to Epiphany? Securities that have appreciated in value may be donated to Epiphany, and you pay no capital gains tax on the securities you donate. Epiphany sells your securities and uses the proceeds for its mission and ministry. Because Epiphany has its own brokerage account, we can provide a seamless process to accept in-kind transfers of securities such as common stock, mutual funds, and Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's). By transferring to Epiphany, the securities are not sold until they reach Epiphany's brokerage account. The full amount is then tax free and allows you to potentially use the full amount as a charitable donation/deduction on your tax return making this a win/win situation. Please consider this as part of your year-end tax planning and for future years as well. Required Minimum IRA Distributions (RMD s): Why not save yourself the tax? Many individuals are required to withdraw funds from their retirement accounts as a required minimum distribution (RMD) in the year their age reaches 70 ½. As part of a simple tax planning tool, you can use part of your RMD to fulfill your offerings to Epiphany, whether as part of your annual giving strategy, as a one-time contribution, or anytime during the year. IRS rules allow for what is known as a qualified charitable distribution. The impact of these distributions is TAX FREE and, at the same time, could generate additional benefits on your tax return. This is especially true for those who cannot deduct their annual givings as a charitable contribution. If you have any questions, or have an interest in pursuing either of these topics, please phone or Jeff Kociak at (630) , or jkociak@ejfcpa.com. 7 OUR CHURCH COMMUNITY 7 Check It Out! Modern American Protestants bring an earnest drive to be faithful correctly -- so correctly that it would be humorous if anyone else noticed. Jonathan Acuff observes minor issues others are afraid to admit exist, like shunned prayers. "It's a well-known Christian fact that if you surrender your life to God... the first thing he's going to do is send you to Africa. Immediately." If you hold back on that prayer, you get to stay here and watch movies. "For Christians, it's completely okay to watch R-rated movies, but only if they got that rating because of violence.... But if there's any nudity,... We'll have to wait until they show the edited version on TBS." Stuff Christians Like examines the secret verbal dances, the worship poses, and the nervous thoughts of fellow believers trying to get it all right. "We're supposed to love God, love our neighbor, and love ourselves.... What if this year we set our sights on something reasonable, like, 'Let's send less hate mail than devil worshipers'?" This book can be dipped into in the library or checked out for FREE! --Assistant Librarian Teri Save The Date! SUNDAY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM Sunday, December 17, 9:30 a.m. worship service
