The final results are in and two clubs in the Utah-Idaho District met the challenge and did an awesome job. Remember this is a NET increase. Most clubs have members leave and need to replace them, but this is true GROWTH. Division 2 Capitol Hill, SLC Club grew from 19 to 25 members. This is a 31.6% increase and they were refunded the Kiwanis International dues for 6 new members. Division 8 Midvale (now the Midvale/Fort Union) Club grew from 7 to 10 members. This is a 42.9% increase and they were refunded the KI dues for 3 new members. The following clubs increased membership, but did not reach the 25% mark: Division 1 Highland Division 2 Tooele Division 3 Brigham City and Tremonton Division 4 Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Rexburg Division 5 Burley Division 6 Boise Gem State Division 8 West Valley-Salt Lake County With this new year, let s work with the TAG Team and grow our clubs and divisions. The Treasure Valley of Nampa Club was organized in Sep 2007, so Division 9 is growing. Division 8 will have the Kiwanis Club of South Salt Lake Valley chartered Feb 22, 2008 at 6:30pm at Madelines Steak House and Grill at 1133 West South in Salt Lake City. 2 PAGE 2 FIVE LESSONS ABOUT HOW TO TREAT PEOPLE (Author Unknown) By Governor Bill Mullins 1. First Important Lesson - "Know the Cleaning Lady" - During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed throught the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50's but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely," said the professor, "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello." I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy. 2. Second Important Lesson - "Pickup In The Rain" - One night, at 11:30 an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surpise a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others." Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole. 3. Third Important Lesson - "Remember Those Who Serve" - In the days when an ice cream sunday cost much less, a 10 year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asdked. "50 cents" replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. "35 cents" she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn't have the sundae, beacuse he had to have enough left to leave her a tip. 4. Fourth Important Lesson - "The Obstacles In Our Path" - In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone our of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand - "Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition."

3 5. Fifth Important Lesson - "Giving When It Counts" - Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-yr.-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?" Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her. PAGE 3 THESE LESSONS CAN BE USED EVERY DAY OF OUR LIVES AS WE SERVE IN OUR COMMUNITIES THROUGH KIWANIS. DO ROSES HAVE THORNS OR DO THORNS HAVE ROSES? By First Lady Barbara "Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns. I am thankful thorns have roses." (Alphonse Karr) How is your perception on life? Do you need an attitude adjustment? I know at times I sure do. Our attitude can certainly affect our ability to serve and work with others. There was a 92 yr. old gentleman who had just lost his wife of 70 years and was moving into a nursing home. This man had also become blind. As the nurse was guiding him to his tiny room she provided a visual description of where he would now live, including the eyelet sheets hanging in his window. He exclaimed, "I love it!" The nurse said, "But Mr. Jones, you haven't even been to your room yet; just waitl" Mr Jones replied, "That doesn't have anything to do with it. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged...it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Now there's a gentleman who does not need an attitude adjustment! What an example this little story was to me and I wanted to share it with you folks. When I'm about to have a 'pitty party' or am facing frustration I remember to 'rearrange my mind' and "decide ahead of time to be happy." As we serve and work with and for others, remember to be grateful and remember how wonderful it is "that thorns have roses." Once again I want to tell you Kiwanians how wonderful you are. 4 PAGE 4 IRS STRIKES AGAIN!! BUT DON T PANIC! Marvin D. Chamberlain, District Treasurer The Internal Revenue Service has begun issuing Notice CP-299, for not-for-profit and exempt organizations. I have received a couple of concerned phone calls from local Kiwanis clubs. RELAX ALL! This notice is just informing that beginning in 2008 you ll have to file an annual electronic notice with the IRS, even if your gross receipts (i.e. dues, fund raising, interest, etc) are less than $25,000 (the filing requirement for Form 990 and 990 EZ). The Information that will be required is fairly straight forward and is as follows: Organization s legal name (i.e. Kiwanis Club of Service City, Inc.) Other names that your organization uses Organization s mailing address Organization s web-site (if applicable) Organization s employer identification number (EIN), (this may appear in the upper right part of the notice) Name and address of a principle officer of the Organization Organization s annual tax period or year-end (i.e. September 30) Verify that gross receipts are still normally less than $25,000 Indicate if the organization has terminated (is no longer in business). The IRS is still developing a filing system for this annual electronic notice, so stay tuned. For the latest progress, you can subscribe to and click on EO Newsletter. If you ignore this notice and fail to file for three years, the IRS will revoke your tax-exempt status (Not a good thing!). If revoked, you would have to reapply for an exemption and pay a user fee (an expensive thing). So what can you do to avoid a problem with the IRS? I have a few suggestions: 1) If you haven t received a notice, call for assistance (have your EIN available), 2) If you don t have a post office box as a permanent address, get one. Or make sure that the address you use is current (not the Past President s from five years ago who has moved or died), 3) Sign up for the EO Newsletter and assign an officer or board member to Monitor the status of your filings, Respond promptly to the IRS s request for information and avoid the loss of the exemption problems. If your incorporation status has not been renewed, has expired or has not happened yet, please contact the State of Utah or Idaho or Oregon depending on which state your Kiwanis Club is located in. They will have the necessary forms for you to fill out. If something should happen, the officers of the club are not protected from lawsuits or other very nasty stuff out there. Please protect yourselves and your club.

Sometimes it is simple persistence. Public Relations is a job for every member of Kiwanis and there are lots of ways you can help. Wear your Kiwanis pin, with pride! Be able to tell someone who asks in line at the grocery store what Kiwanis means: A global organization of volunteers, dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Or as one Past Governor loved to say, Let me tell you what we did at my Kiwanis Club today. Carry a copy of the Kiwanis International magazine, the District Newsletter and your club newsletter in your car. You never know when someone might want to see pictures or read a story about what we do. Instead of sending the news to the recycle pile, why not drop off your copy to your doctor or dentist s office. Send a copy of your club newsletter to every local news person, newspaper editor, TV broadcaster, radio announcer that anyone in your club knows, or has ever met. Chances are, one of these days, they will run out of short stories and might just mention that your club meets at the local diner on Wednesdays at noon. Be sure to invite them to join you for a free lunch, too! The following was added by Janet Flinders It is a proven fact that people join Kiwanis because they are invited. If you don t invite your friends and business associates, they will never know that you are a Kiwanian or what Kiwanis is really al about. If you are afraid that they will say NO and you will feel diminished, then have someone else in your club invite them to Kiwanis. The whole point of getting new members is to have more helping hands for service projects and fund-raisers. It also doesn t hurt to get to know them better while sharing a meal in a Kiwanis atmosphere. Be proud of your club, wear your Kiwanis pin, and speak your mind about what is important in your life (mainly Kiwanis). Keep focused on the service you provide to children and the elderly.

7 ANNUAL CLUB GIFTS LaMar Anderson, International Foundation District Chairman As of December 31st, The following clubs are credited as having donated their annual contributions to the Kiwanis International Annual Club Gift Campaign: Orem Golden K, Brigham City, Boise Golden K, Capital City-Boise, Heber Valley, Sugar House-SLC, and Ontario Kiwanis clubs. We are asking all clubs in the Utah-Idaho District to contribute at least $6.00 per member to the International Foundation as their annual club gift and to make a similar contribution to the Utah-Idaho District Foundation. If the Utah-Idaho District's total contribution to the International Foundation exceeds $10,000, the International Foundation returns to our district $5,000 as matching scholarships for our district Circle K and Key Clubs. We have qualified for five matching scholarships for both are Circle K and Key Clubs each year this has been offered by the International Foundation. Our Circle K and Key Clubs are counting on these scholarships to be available again this year. As of December 31st 2007, our district had donated $ in annual club gifts to the International Foundation. We thank the above clubs for their annual club gifts and remind the remaining clubs to send their contributions to the Indianapolis office as soon as possible. ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? By Rob Parker, Kiwanis Int l CEO I heard a speaker recently share a story about a deep-sea fishing experience he had with his young son. He said that from his perspective it was a wonderful day. The weather was perfect, the sea was calm and beautiful, the boat was fun, and he got to spend a full day with his son. Though they had not caught any fish, it really was a wonderful time. At the end of the day he asked his son if he enjoyed himself, and he was surprised at the response. His son was sad and dejected and said he thought it was terrible because they did not catch any fish. The father thought about this for a moment and then offered this insightful counsel: If every time you went fishing you were assured of catching something, it would not be called fishing, it would be called catching. The Stampede is loaded with talent, and making the game even more special, the Stampede takes on former Boise State Star Coby Karl and the L.A. D-Fenders! Kiwanis Night is sponsored by the Division 6 Clubs, but all Kiwanis Clubs are invited to attend and to use the event as a fund raiser for your own club. 8 PAGE 8 Patricia Hansen Gov Elect, Utah Idaho District, Kiwanis International Emerging Leaders of the 21st Century Kiwanis International announces Key Leader a new leadership experience for today's youth leaders. It will focus on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership development experience. Through Kiwanis sponsorship Key Leader will provide an opportunity for youth in the Utah Idaho District to participate in a first-time offered unique leadership training camp. The mission of the program is to provide a life-changing experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership. Key Leader Camp, May 16-18, will be held in Cascade Idaho. Under the direction of Derek Schenck, Utah Idaho Kiwanis District Key Leader Chair, the camp will provide an amazing opportunity for our youth to experience the first taste of leadership. This is not a camp that will soon be forgotten. I welcome Key Leader as a component of Kiwanis that will lend to the organization an innovative way to reach our youth in leadership and growth opportunities never before offered. At key Leader, youth campers learn that Leadership comes from helping others succeed You can help our youth succeed with a Key Leader experience, please consider a gift to the Key Leader Program. Arrive early and play in the amusement parks. Travel to the surrounding attention grabbers (ie. Take a cruise, tour the LDS Church s cattle ranch, see where the space shuttles take off, etc.) The speakers and workshops at the Convention will be well worth your time and money. Make new friends and see old friends. Be there to cast your club s vote for those running for International office and let your voice be heard regarding amendments and other Kiwanis Int l business. If you have never attended an Int l convention, this is the one that will knock your socks off. Bob Newhart will be live on stage for the Super Star Night. Be sure to be ready to laugh a lot. Early in February, the registration and housing forms--along with a general convention information brochure--to club secretaries. Shortly thereafter, there will be an online registration option in place. 19 MERIDIAN KIWANIS CLUB HOPE TREE PROGRAM By Dennis Pratt, Meridian Club Secretary PAGE 19 Once again the Meridian Noon Kiwanis Club had a very successful Hope Tree Program. Under this program, we put Christmas trees in strategic locations in Meridian, placing tags on them with a Christmas Wish for a needy youngster. The tags included names collected from the Meridian School District, and identify the students age and sex. During the last few weeks leading up to Christmas, the general public takes a tag or tags. They then purchase and deliver unwrapped presents to the same location as the tree from which they obtained the tag. Club members then pick up the presents and take them to a specific location. Our location is in the barn of one our members, Thair Pond, who has converted his barn to include a large space for activities. Presents are wrapped, using paper we solicit from many different sources, helping keep our costs down. We wrap the presents ourselves because we want to ensure that the presents do not pose a health hazard and are appropriate gifts for a child. This year, the whole shebang was headed up by Kelly Rush. Kelly was assisted by Chris Klein, plus many other Kiwanians and other volunteers. A few days prior to Christmas, the Ada County Sheriff s Swat Team and the local Meridian police deliver the presents to the children. This year, Kelly reported that over 2700 presents were delivered to 350 families. Our club makes sure that no wish goes un-purchased. Many of our members become present buyers. They are then reimbursed by the club. If we didn t have the leadership, i.e. Kelly and the involvement of the rest of the club, this program would not be nearly as successful as it is. Each year it just gets bigger and better. 20 PAGE 20 KIWANIS CLUBS TOUR UTAH STATE CAPITOL DURING THE REDEDICATION OPEN HOUSE Source: Deseret News Commemorative Section, January 3, 2008 The Utah State Capitol, which has been closed the past three years, torn apart and then rebuilt was rededicated on January 4, The Capitol is a brighter; cleaner building that embraces its past through restored artwork and lighting. Yet it is also prepared for the future with modern technology and a new foundation that is designed to keep the Capitol intact and strong for another century or more. One of the top reasons for renovating the state Capitol was to protect the building from collapsing during an earthquake. From May 2005 until May 2007 crews installed 265 base isolators beneath the Capitol to allow the building to move up to 24 inches in any direction during an earthquake. The isolators act as a sort of shock absorber. The isolators were designed to allow the Capitol to withstand a 7.3 magnitude earthquake and reduce the seismic impact on the building by 75 to 80 percent according to Jerod Johnson of Reaveley Engineers and Associates. To install the isolators, crews had to remove the Capitol s old foundation of concrete columns. The building now sits upon the base isolators, which rest atop new concrete footings. An Open House was held from January 5 January 11, On January 8 th Members from 8 Clubs comprised of those in Divisions 2 and 8. The clubs represented were from Division 2: Bonneville, Salt Lake South Valley, South Davis, and Tooele; and from Division 8: Sugar House, Midvale, Park City, and Sugar House. Attending the event were Governor Bill Mullins, and Past Governor s John Moray and Lowel Inkley. The event was co-organized by the Bonneville and Sugar House Clubs. A catered lunch was served and then those attending were treated to a guided tour of the State Capitol. The guided tour was arranged by Lisa Morrise, staff member of the Capitol Preservation Board and Mother of Michael Morrise, member of the Key Club of Highland High School. Facts: The interior dome is 165 feet above the Rotunda floor. There are 14 lion heads and 10 beehives inside the chamber of the Utah House of Representatives Gavin Jack sculpted the lions that originally stood at the east and west entrances of the Capitol in New lions were sculpted in 2007 by artist Nick Fairplay. The rotunda was left unfinished for nearly 20 years until artwork could be funded. The monolithic columns inside the Capitol are about 26 feet tall. There are 29 desks in the Senate chamber for each Utah senator. There are 75 desks inside the House chamber for each Utah representative. John C. Olmsted, son of the man who designed New York City's Central Park, designed the landscaping for the Utah Capitol Renovation Lighting: Redesigned to be more energy efficient. Historic lighting fixtures kept in historic rooms in Capitol. New skylights added to east and west atriums. Cleaning: Exterior stone cleaned and repaired. Drum of dome restored with old and new terra cotta. Rotunda: Painting of sea gulls with 5-foot wingspans enhanced and cleaned. Governor's suite: Silk wall fabric in ceremonial office replicated to match historic design. Original wood floor cleaned and repaired. Reception and waiting areas have new rugs created to match historic designs. Supreme Court chamber: Repainted and wood fixtures restored. Newly restored skylight. House and Senate chambers: Paint schemes restored to original design. Senate wall aisles have been expanded. New murals added to walls.

23 REMINDER FOR ALL CLUB SECRETARIES By Janet S. Flinders, District Secretary PAGE 23 The addendum will be available on the District Website along with the Mid-Year Conference Registration & the Kiwanis International Convention Registration. It has changed dramatically because Kiwanis International will not put our previous addendum on the Online Monthly Report Form. So.... the new addendum will reflect what is on the online report for points. I will be available for one-on-one questions and suggestions with any and all club secretaries at Mid-Year Conference. Service Projects must be those hours spent in the name of Kiwanis. If your members are doing service, but not under the guise of Kiwanis, then it does not count on your monthly report form. A couple of clubs are reporting playing the music at church or teaching a Sunday School class as Kiwanis Service. I have never heard of a Kiwanis Church. Please think before you report service that has nothing to do with Kiwanis. This year might be a good time to re-read your By-Laws. Some of you will be surprised to see what each Kiwanis Club is supposed to be doing. Attendance at Mid-Year Conference and District Convention is pretty important. Double check to make sure your incorporation papers are in order and haven t lapsed. Let me know when you have new member adds, deletes or honorary members added. Also address changes are very important, so the U&I Kiwanian doesn t get thrown away by the Postal Service. I apologize for the problems of miscommunication I have had with some of you. Since my husband shattered his hip, it has been difficult. Please be patient with me just now.
