Exdus 27-28! 2 f 22 Ex. 27:8 Yu shall make it hllw with planks; as it was shwn t yu in the muntain, s they shall make it. The altar was nt designed in the way we tend t see altars tday SLIDE 27/28-5 It was a square bx made f wd verlaid with brass The bx was 7.5 ft square and 4.5 feet high The crners f the altar had hrns prtruding utward Inside the bx halfway dwn was a grate made f brass which sat under a ledge running arund the inside f the altar The entire altar was carried using wd ples cvered with brass The altar is ften prtrayed as sitting n raised grund SLIDE 27/28-6 There is n prescriptin in scripture fr raising the altar Yet it is a cnsistent feature f ancient descriptins In fact, the wrd altar means high place The design f the altar was specifically made fr sacrificial animals t be placed within the bx f the altar t be cnsumed by fire SLIDE 27/28-7 The fire was left burning cntinually n the grate The grate was designed t ensure that xygen reached the burning fire frm underneath The pieces f meat were placed n tp f the cals and burned with the wd until they became ash The tls used t tend the fire and the altar were all made f brass as well SLIDE 27/28-8 There was a pails and shvels t remve the ashes frm underneath the altar There were frks t psitin the pieces f meat n the fire There were basins t hld the bld f the sacrifice And a firept t mre ht cals inside the tabernacle t light the fire at the altar f incense 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 3 f 22 The altar was psitined n the grunds f the tabernacle curt directly in frnt f the entrance f the cmpund SLIDE 27/28-9 The fire in the altar was never allwed ut fr as lng as the tabernacle std And as the tabernacle was initially cmmissined, the fire in the altar was first lit by Gd Himself, we re tld This same fire lit the fire in the altar f incense in the Hly Place It was here that Jews brught their sacrifices as required under the Law In additin t the sacrifices required by individuals fr their, the priests cnducted the daily sacrifices required by the Law Every mrning and every evening the priests wuld ffer a sacrifice f a lamb These sacrifices invlved puring ut the life bld f an inncent animal and then burning the animal in fire Depending n the sacrifice, the bld wuld either be applied t the hrns f the altar r t the altar f incense in the tabernacle If the bld was applied t the hrns n the altar, then the priest was required t eat sme f the sacrificial meat If the bld was brught int the tabernacle, then the priest was prhibited frm eating the sacrifice One way r the ther, the HP brught the sacrifice befre the Lrd, either by the bld r by his presence in the tabernacle The rest f the bld was spilled ut at the base f the altar S if we were t enter the gate f the tabernacle, we need t image a raised brass bx cntinually burning At the base f the altar wuld be literally a river f bld running away frm it And n the hrns f the altar, are the dried smears f thusands f applicatins f bld SLIDE 27/28-11 And the priests are cntinually bringing sacrifices t the altar and peridically remving the ashes SLIDE 27/ Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 4 f 22 When wrshippers brught a sacrifice befre the altar t atne fr sin, they were required t kill the animal themselves S the image yu have f the altar is ne f bld and death cntinually Bld spilled fr sin The death f inncents cause by the sin f men The burning f flesh t atne fr sin And this is the first thing yu see as yu enter the tabernacle The altar presents a clear illustratin f Christ s sacrifice First, nthing else f the tabernacle is even visible, much less available t a wrshipper until that persn has encuntered the altar f Gd Likewise, n ne can enter the huse f Gd unless and until they have encuntered Christ n the crss The crss was the place where the Lrd made Himself t be a sacrifice fr the sins f Gd s children Heb. 7:26 Fr it was fitting fr us t have such a high priest, hly, inncent, undefiled, separated frm sinners and exalted abve the heavens; Heb. 7:27 wh des nt need daily, like thse high priests, t ffer up sacrifices, first fr His wn sins and then fr the sins f the peple, because this He did nce fr all when He ffered up Himself. And just like a visitr t the tabernacle culdn t bypass the altar n the way t the Hly Place, neither can we get arund the crss in ur effrt t find Gd 1Cr. 1:18 Fr the wrd f the crss is flishness t thse wh are perishing, but t us wh are being saved it is the pwer f Gd. 1Cr. 1:19 Fr it is written, ı I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, ı AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE. 1Cr. 1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater f this age? Has nt Gd made flish the wisdm f the wrld? 1Cr. 1:21 Fr since in the wisdm f Gd the wrld thrugh its wisdm did nt cme t knw Gd, Gd was well-pleased thrugh the flishness f the message preached t save thse wh believe. 1Cr. 1:22 Fr indeed Jews ask fr signs and Greeks search fr wisdm; 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 5 f 22 1Cr. 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, t Jews a stumbling blck and t Gentiles flishness, 1Cr. 1:24 but t thse wh are the called, bth Jews and Greeks, Christ the pwer f Gd and the wisdm f Gd. The materials f the altar represent the judgment pured ut n Christ n the crss The entire altar was wd cvered by brass Wd again dentes Christ s humanity, having been brn n earth While brass and fire are always a picture f Gd s judgment Furthermre, thugh Christ received the judgment f Gd and experienced the fire f Gd s wrath, His bdy was nt cnsumed Just as the wd underneath the brass was nt cnsumed by the fire The hrns represent Christ as well Hrns are ften a picture f pwer and might in scripture The pwer f Gd is demnstrated in Christ s pwer t cver all sin And the pwer f Christ t cnquer sin and death by His death Hrns were als the place the animals were secured while they were sacrificed Just as Christ held Himself t the crss Men built the altar accrding t Gd s directin, just as Rmans built the crss that held Christ But Jesus placed Himself n the crss He is pictured buy the hrns in the way they hld the sacrifice t the altar Finally, the bld f Christ was shed at the crss, which is clearly pictured by the altar 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 6 f 22 His bld was pured ut at the base f the crss when the sldier pierced His side with the swrd Just as the animal s bld is spilled at the base f the altar Then there is the bld applied t the hrns f the f the altar And in Heaven, we re tld Christ applied His bld in the Heavenly Tabernacle Heb. 9:11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest f the gd things t cme, He entered thrugh the greater and mre perfect tabernacle, nt made with hands, that is t say, nt f this creatin; Heb. 9:12 and nt thrugh the bld f gats and calves, but thrugh His wn bld, He entered the hly place nce fr all, having btained eternal redemptin. Just as the High Priest wuld take bld int the Hly Place n the Day f Atnement, s des Christ enter by His wn bld Even the altar s raised psture pictures Christ raised up n the crss In fact, we can mre clearly understand anther event in Israel s time in the desert when we cmpare it t the altar in the tabernacle In Numbers 21 the Lrd is angry with the Israelites fr their grumbling against Mses S He sends fiery serpents amng the peple, and the bite f the serpent causes them t die Thrugh Mses, the Lrd gives the peple a chance t live Mses cnstructs a brass serpent and places it n a staff He hles the staff in the air and all thse wh lk upn the brass serpent wuld live The Gspel f Jhn tells us that the serpent n the staff pictures Christ lifted up n the crss and we can see the symbls clearly First, the serpent is a picture f Satan s handiwrk in the garden, bringing men int a state f sin And the result f the serpent s wrk is death fr all But Christ became sin fr us, as pictured by that serpent, and then hung n a crss 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 7 f 22 And the serpent was made f brass t signify Gd s judgment fr sin resting n Christ And everyne wh lks upn Christ in faith will receive eternal life SLIDE 27/28-12 Cntinuing in ur utward mvement frm the center f the tabernacle, we reach the bundary f the tabernacle cmpund Ex. 27:9 Yu shall make the curt f the tabernacle. On the suth side there shall be hangings fr the curt f fine twisted linen ne hundred cubits lng fr ne side; Ex. 27:10 and its pillars shall be twenty, with their twenty sckets f brnze; the hks f the pillars and their bands shall be f silver. Ex. 27:11 Likewise fr the nrth side in length there shall be hangings ne hundred cubits lng, and its twenty pillars with their twenty sckets f brnze; the hks f the pillars and their bands shall be f silver. Ex. 27:12 Fr the width f the curt n the west side shall be hangings f fifty cubits with their ten pillars and their ten sckets. Ex. 27:13 The width f the curt n the east side shall be fifty cubits. Ex. 27:14 The hangings fr the ne side f the gate shall be fifteen cubits with their three pillars and their three sckets. Ex. 27:15 And fr the ther side shall be hangings f fifteen cubits with their three pillars and their three sckets. Ex. 27:16 Fr the gate f the curt there shall be a screen f twenty cubits, f blue and purple and scarlet material and fine twisted linen, the wrk f a weaver, with their fur pillars and their fur sckets. Ex. 27:17 All the pillars arund the curt shall be furnished with silver bands with their hks f silver and their sckets f brnze. Ex. 27:18 The length f the curt shall be ne hundred cubits, and the width fifty thrughut, and the height five cubits f fine twisted linen, and their sckets f brnze. Ex. 27:19 All the utensils f the tabernacle used in all its service, and all its pegs, and all the pegs f the curt, shall be f brnze. The curt was framed by a fence cnstructed f linen and wd pillars The pillars were set in brnze r brass SLIDE 27/28-13 The linen curtains was suspended by silver hks The dimensins f the curt were 150 feet by 75 feet The wall rse 7.5 feet 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 8 f 22 There was a gate n the eastern wall, s that nce yu entered the tabernacle yu mved east t west The gate was thirty feet acrss and cnsisted f anther linen screen SLIDE 27/28-14 The curt created by this wall was the curt f the Jews The entire structure f the tabernacle made a pint f inclusin and exclusin and the wall reinfrced this ntin SLIDE 27/28-15 Only Gd s chsen peple culd enter the tabernacle grunds Gentiles were frbidden t ever enter even the uter curt The Law f Mses established this barrier The Law created a partitin between Jew and Gentile And there was n mre visible reminder f that divisin than the uter wall f the tabernacle And amng Jews, nly Levites culd enter the Hly Place And amng Levites, nly the High Priest culd enter the Hly f Hlies, and then nly ne day each year During this ne day event, the High Priest ffered atnement fr the sins f the entire natin under the cvenant Jesus brke dwn these walls f partitin by His sinless life and sacrifice n the crss First, Paul says Jesus brke dwn the barrier f the Law separating the Jew and Gentile Eph. 2:13 But nw in Christ Jesus yu wh frmerly were far ff have been brught near by the bld f Christ. Eph. 2:14 Fr He Himself is ur peace, wh made bth grups int ne and brke dwn the barrier f the dividing wall, Eph. 2:15 by ablishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law f cmmandments cntained in rdinances, s that in Himself He might make the tw int ne new man, thus establishing peace, Eph. 2:16 and might recncile them bth in ne bdy t Gd thrugh the crss, by it having put t death the enmity Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 9 f 22 Secndly, Jesus eliminated the divisin f priesthd amng Gd s peple by putting an end t the Law f the cvenant Heb. 7:11 Nw if perfectin was thrugh the Levitical priesthd (fr n the basis f it the peple received the Law), what further need was there fr anther priest t arise accrding t the rder f Melchizedek, and nt be designated accrding t the rder f Aarn? Heb. 7:12 Fr when the priesthd is changed, f necessity there takes place a change f law als. Heb. 7:13 Fr the ne cncerning whm these things are spken belngs t anther tribe, frm which n ne has fficiated at the altar. Heb. 7:14 Fr it is evident that ur Lrd was descended frm Judah, a tribe with reference t which Mses spke nthing cncerning priests. Heb. 7:15 And this is clearer still, if anther priest arises accrding t the likeness f Melchizedek, Heb. 7:16 wh has becme such nt n the basis f a law f physical requirement, but accrding t the pwer f an indestructible life. The Law f Mses established a priesthd in the family f Aarn and his descendants Thse priests served the tabernacle f the Law But Jesus wasn t brn f the family f Aarn He was brn f the tribe f Judah S He wuldn t have even been qualified t serve as a priest under the Law By His death, He fulfilled and put t an end the Law And therefre the change in law als brught abut a change in priesthd Because Jesus serves in a different rder, ne defined nt by a physical characteristic but by His immrtality, Hebrews says S nw all wh are brn again in Christ can share in His priesthd duties And s we all can enter the Hly Place f Gd s wrd and prayer And nne f Gd s peple excluded 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 10 f 22 This is why Peter says believers are part f a ryal priesthd 1Pet. 2:9 But yu are A CHOSEN RACE, A ryal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR Gd s OWN POSSESSION, s that yu may prclaim the excellencies f Him wh has called yu ut f darkness int His marvelus light; Thirdly, Jesus is ur High Priest, Wh has entered the Hly f Hlies in the Heavenly tabernacle And He lives there t make intercessin fr His children n a daily basis Heb. 7:23 The frmer priests, n the ne hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death frm cntinuing, Heb. 7:24 but Jesus, n the ther hand, because He cntinues frever, hlds His priesthd permanently. Heb. 7:25 Therefre He is able als t save frever thse wh draw near t Gd thrugh Him, since He always lives t make intercessin fr them. Heb. While the High Priest was excluded 364 days f the year, Jesus is present 365 days f the year S we can all apprach bldly t the thrne f Gd since Christ brings thse needs befre the Father n ur behalf everyday Nw the Law transitins t a discussin f the priesthd garments and sme f the duties Keep in mind we still haven t described tw pieces f furniture in the tabernacle They have been left fr later because f their significance Remember everything is described frm the center utward accrding t the purpses they serve These remaining items f furniture have different purpses than everything else described s far 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 11 f 22 Ex. 27:20 Yu shall charge the sns f Israel, that they bring yu clear il f beaten lives fr the light, t make a lamp burn cntinually. Ex. 27:21 In the tent f meeting, utside the veil which is befre the testimny, Aarn and his sns shall keep it in rder frm evening t mrning befre the LORD; it shall be a perpetual statute thrughut their generatins fr the sns f Israel. The last tw verses f chapter 27 begin t intrduce the duties f the tabernacle priests SLIDE 27/28-16 First, they were respnsible fr beating ils t create the il fr the lamps And the il lamp must burn cntinuusly It culd never be extinguished This instructin creates anther illustratin We knw the lamp is an illustratin f the light f Gd s truth fund in His wrd As servants f Gd, we can (and shuld) put ur effrt int wrking with the HS t gain an understanding f Gd s wrd and share that light with thers But unless ur HP ignites that il, ur effrts cannt prduce illuminatin Furthermre, the seven lamps represent the fullness f the HS resting upn Christ Is. 11:1 Then a sht will spring frm the stem f Jesse, And a branch frm his rts will bear fruit. Is. 11:2 The Spirit f the LORD will rest n Him, The spirit f wisdm and understanding, The spirit f cunsel and strength, The spirit f knwledge and the fear f the LORD. The lamp is perpetually lit, a sign f Christ s cnstant presence in the life f every believer by the presence f His Spirit in us 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ex. 28:39 Yu shall weave the tunic f checkered wrk f fine linen, and shall make a turban f fine linen, and yu shall make a sash, the wrk f a weaver. In the pening f chapter 28, Aarn and his sns are identified as the family wh will carry the burden f the priesthd thrughut all the generatins f Israel SLIDE 27/28-17 The garments wrn by Aarn, the first High Priest, were specifically intended t mark them fr duty They cnsisted f six pieces They were required fr wrking in the service f the tabernacle The priestly garments were intended t cnsecrate Aarn and his sns in v.3 The wrd cnsecrate means t be dedicated in hliness The priests were wearing garments that set them apart fr this duty in a hly way, apart frm sin Als, in v.2 and elsewhere, the garments are said t be fr beauty and glry as well We ll examine each item briefly The ephd and breast plate were ne piece SLIDE 27/28-18 The ephd was the gld wven frnt piece wrn ver the shulders On tp f each shulder, the ephd held a sing nyx stne Engraved in each stne were the names f the sns f Israel, six n ne stne and six n the secnd Attached the ephd was a breastplate cntaining 12 jewels representing the 12 tribes And behind the breastplate was a puch cntained tw stnes called the Unim and Thummin 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 15 f 22 They were given t Israel t discern Gd s will n questins they brught befre the Lrd The wrd Urim means lights r illuminatin The wrd Thummim means perfectin r cmpletin The LXX translates them Revelatin and Truth Tgether they represent cmplete illuminatin When the High Priest wanted t ask Gd a questin, he must phrase the questin in the frm f a yes/n answer Then he wuld either cast the lts the stnes as lts (r sme say ne stnes wuld light up) indicating Gd s answer This methd f discerning Gd s will was less efficient then sending a prphet t speak t the peple Still, it served t give Israel divine directin in the face f difficult questins The stnes were nt special except that Gd had designated them t be s They remained in the pssessin f the priests until the Babylnian invasin and destructin f Jerusalem That event ushered in the Age f the Gentiles, accrding t Daniel And at that pint, the ark and the breastplate f the High Priest were bth lst frever The meaning f the breastplate and ephd was t bear burdens The jewels and engraved nyx stnes represent the peple f Israel S the High Priest was bearing the burdens f Israel as he perfrmed his duties n their behalf He bre their sins and he had their needs n his heart As the High Priest enters the Hly Place and the Hly f Hlies each year, he brught thse burdens with him Much as he had t bring either the bld f each sacrifice r eat the meat befre entering the Hly Place 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 16 f 22 Symblically, the High Priest was the representative f the peple And every symbl must be cnnected t a reality fr the symbl t have meaning And this symbl represents the reality f hw Christ bre ur burdens as ur High Priest And He has children n His heart even as He intercedes fr us nw Next we lk at the gwn r rbe f the High Priest SLIDE 27/28-19 He wre a gwn f fine linen It included a finely wven hem upn which hung pmegranates and bells The pmegranates prvided weight t the gwn t ensure it never raised up in a wind expsing the nakedness f the priest And the bells wuld ring as the high priest mved, drawing attentin t his psitin and authrity Flklre hlds that the bells served anther purpse n the Day f Atnement In v.35 we hear that the bells will prevent the High Priest frm dying as he enters the Hly Place Flklre develped that if the High Priest entered the Hly f Hlies n the Day f Atnement withut bells, he was struck dwn In that sense, the bells saved the High Priest frm death Furthermre, the myth held that shuld his sacrificial ffering nt be pleasing t the Lrd fr any reasn, the High Priest wuld be struck dwn dead Because n ne culd g in after him, the priests wuld tie a rpe t his leg and listen fr the bells If they stpped, the assumptin was he died and they wuld pull him ut 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 17 f 22 This is nt true, as this analysis frm the Biblical Studies Fundatin and Zin Messianic Jewish Fellwship Cngregatin explains: The Biblical Studies Fundatin (lsely assciated with Dallas Thelgical Seminary), similarly reprts that their research has put the the rpe arund the ankle-r-waist-rmaybe-the-leg legend t rest. They als pint ut that Aarn was t wear a blue ephd with bells n its hem (Exdus 28:31-35), when he entered the Hly Place (nt the Hly f Hlies) (Leviticus 16:2-4). When he enters the Hly f Hlies, he washes and wears special linen garments, nt the ephd with bells. If there are n bells t jingle, there is n need fr the rpe either. A Messianic Jewish Fellwship pints ut the ptential difficulty f dragging a dead priest ut f the Hly f Hlies: Yu culd nly drag ut the priest if he died in the Hly place. The way the curtains f the temple were designed, the priest culd nt have been dragged ut f the HOLY f HOLIES. The veil was made using many layers f clth. The thickness was ver three feet. The curtains verlapped and made a small maze thrugh which the priest walked His headgear was als intended t mark him fr duty and prvide spiritual cver The frnt f the head piece had a pure gld plate that said Hly t the Lrd The High Priest als wre a sash and tunic f fine linen The rest f the sns f Aarn wre less rnate utfits SLIDE 27/28-20 Ex. 28:40 Fr Aarn s sns yu shall make tunics; yu shall als make sashes fr them, and yu shall make caps fr them, fr glry and fr beauty. Ex. 28:41 Yu shall put them n Aarn yur brther and n his sns with him; and yu shall anint them and rdain them and cnsecrate them, that they may serve Me as priests. Ex. 28:42 Yu shall make fr them linen breeches t cver their bare flesh; they shall reach frm the lins even t the thighs. Ex. 28:43 They shall be n Aarn and n his sns when they enter the tent f meeting, r when they apprach the altar t minister in the hly place, s that they d nt incur guilt and die. It shall be a statute frever t him and t his descendants after him. 18 Exdus 27-28! 18 f 22 They had t wear special clthing as well whenever they ministered They had linen rbes and linen britches underneath t clthe themselves fully Ntice again that this clthing must be wrn t prevent death when serving in the Hly Place r appraching the altar Thrugh these mandates the Lrd is establishing anther picture, nce that begins back t Genesis 3 In the Garden when Man and Wman sinned, they immediately discvered their nakedness By their sin, they became indebted t their Creatr Gd is perfectly just and righteus, which means that all sin must be judged Gd s perfectin is manifested int Creatin by His wrd, and His wrd cannt be delivered and nt be truth Therefre, when Gd said t Adam that eating the fruit wuld mean death, then by that wrd death must be the penalty fr sin S as Adam and Wman ate, they sinned, and in their sin they incurred the penalty Gd s wrd prclaimed After they sinned, they immediately became aware f their jepardy befre Gd Their cnsciusness reflected this spiritual change by experiencing feelings f guilt and vulnerability and shame Even withut Gd present, they sensed their jepardy, and after Gd appears, they hide in fear fr the same reasn These feelings caused them t sense a need fr physical cvering They culd n lnger feel at ease withut it Their spiritual expsure brught with it a physical expsure They culd nt cver r crrect fr their spiritual expsure, s they did the nly thing they culd They sught physical cvering 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 19 f 22 The Lrd gave Man and Wman cvering f animal skins, which were made available t them by the sacrifice f an animal In Gen 3:21 we re tld that Gd accmplished that first sacrifice fr Man He sacrificed an animal, spilling its bld, and used the skins t clthe them That sacrifice was the first physical death in Gd s creatin It was made necessary because f sin S the bld f the sacrifice was a spiritual cvering while the clthing was a physical cvering Thrugh this example, we learn abut the relatinship between sin and bld and cvering First, sin in any frm immediately makes necessary death If Gd is t make an escape pssible fr sinful man, His wrath fr sin must still be satisfied, since Gd s wrd still stands S there must be a payment f death fr sin And accrding t scripture, the life f a living creature is held in the bld Lev. 17:11 Fr the life f the flesh is in the bld, and I have given it t yu n the altar t make atnement fr yur suls; fr it is the bld by reasn f the life that makes atnement. The bld is the life f every creature If the bld is pured ut f the bdy, then the life is taken ut f the bdy as well S where sin exists, a puring ut f bld must take place t satisfy Gd s wrd cncerning sin Secndly, the sacrifice must be a substitute withut sin itself We sacrifice animals since they are nt creatures capable f sinning against Gd s Law 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 20 f 22 Yet they are under the curse f the Law, since they are frm the earth which Gd has cursed S thugh they are acceptable t Gd, animal sacrifices cannt put away sin altgether Finally, the sacrifice must be ffered in a pure and hly manner, apart frm sin, r else the sacrifice is defiled and it is n lnger a suitable substitute The priests were sinful men, but fr the time they served in the tabernacle, they engaged in ritual cleansing and sacrifice that prvided spiritual cvering Their garments prvided physical cvering These things were appinted under the Law s that as the priest s fulfilled their duties under the Law, they were acceptable t the Lrd S under the Law, the priests are required t wear special clthing as part f the prcess f making themselves acceptable t Gd in perfrming their duties n behalf f the peple Ultimately, these sacrifices were insufficient t address sin Men ffered the sacrifices in bedience t the law Their faith brught salvatin apart frm the Law But the rituals f sacrifice were a cnstant reminder that sin requires death unless an acceptable cvering is prvided that is acceptable t Gd We can draw tw parallels r illustratins frm these things First, Christ s wrk n ur behalf is pictured in lessr frm by all these details Christ lived a sinless life making Him a perfect sacrifice He died and spilled His bld t pay ur debt His bld cvered the ffense f sin, nt in an earthly tabernacle but in a Heavenly tabernacle 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 27-28! 21 f 22 Furthermre, since He was nt brn under the curse but was brn f the Hly Spirit, His death culd accmplish what n ther culd Finally, Jesus was brn in human frm s He culd serve as man s representative befre the Thrne Since ur Representative must be made like us but withut sin Just as the High Priest f Israel represented his peple but nly after being cnsecrated Secndly, we see a picture f hw the saints must serve the Lrd tday Paul says this in Rmans 12 Rm. 12:1 Therefre I urge yu, brethren, by the mercies f Gd, t present yur bdies a living and hly sacrifice, acceptable t Gd, which is yur spiritual service f wrship. As we serve in Gd s huse, we serve as priests in the sense that we present ur bdies t the Lrd as ur sacrifice But we must present them in a hly way We must have a cvering fr ur sin befre ur spiritual service is acceptable t Gd Hebrews puts it succinctly Heb. 11:6 And withut faith it is impssible t please Him, fr he wh cmes t Gd must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder f thse wh seek Him. Rmans 1-11 describes Gd s plan fr salvatin Rmans 12 and nward describes the respnse f a believer t their salvatin Yu can d Rmans 12 unless yu ve already lived Rmans 1-11 Just like the priests, we must be cvered by the sacrifice f Christ, cnsecrated fr service by ur faith, befre we can serve the lving Gd 2013 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
