13 Preface The information contained within this book has been collected from numerous sources over the years. These details vary from genealogist s handwritten notes to records from libraries, historical societies, county court houses, state archives and federal resources. The information from transcribed records is essential to this book, but the process opens the possibilities for errors. This material was not originally intended for a book, but rather, for my own use. When I first started reaching my family, I rarely cited sources, which is an oversight that has come back to haunt me. I have done my utmost to give credit, when credit is due, and placed this explanation in each of my books. A single indigent researcher has reached out, stating she did not receive full recognition for her work. Information on the Internet can be posted numerous times and it can be difficult to determine the origins. If I have not properly acknowledged a source, it was through an error in record keeping and not an intentional act. If this oversight has occurred, I sincerely apologize. My goal is to preserve the history of Friend family before it is lost to time. The history of our ancestors is not ours to own and hide away, but it is rather something to be shared with all that follow. The information for family lines was collected from direct descendants whenever possible. One might believe this connection would generate the most accurate information, but unfortunately, can be the source of family legends. For example, my mother, her mother and her great grandmother all believed we were descended form a Native American woman. I have found this family legend/fact is ingrained in many Friend histories of the numerous descendants of Nils Larsson Friend (Frande). Yet

14 modern analysis my DNA, as well as other Friends, can find a no traces of the Native American DNA in our genome. Most family legends are based on actual events; yet, the final version of a story can stray wide of the mark. Therefore, the information within this text, though checked, may still contain unintentional errors. If these errors do exist, I truly apologize.

15 Introduction Karrenhappuck (Kerrenhappuck) Friend was the daughter of John Friend Jr. (Abt 1764 to 1849) and Elizabeth Ward (1778 to 1845). Karrenhappuck was the 3x great granddaughter of Nils Larrson Friend (Frande), a Swedish immigrant who came to the New World in 1648, settling in what would become Chester, PA. Karrenhappuck was born in the Northwestern part of MD on May 16, 1802 and named after her parental grandmother (Karrenhappuck/ Kerrenhappuck Hyatt), the wife of John Friend Sr., patriarch of the Friend family of Garrett Co., MD. Karrenhappuck married John Robinson Savage, and with at least six children, lived out her life on a farm two miles West of present day Friendsville, MD. The only descriptions of Karrenhappuck or her husband that I could find, comes from the book Indian Blood by Evelyn Guard Olsen (1967). Mrs. Olsen wrote:... small dark eyed Karrenhappuck. married into the family of Savages, where the men were of great strength. I have found no other descriptions, photographs, diaries or personal papers for either Karrenhappuck or John. This book began as a chapter in John Friend Jr. of Friend s Delight, Sang Run, MD (2nd Edition). The material was collected from hundreds of sources which include the US Census, family bibles, land deeds, wills, estate documents, photographs, personal histories, military accounts as well as birth, death and marriage records. This book attempts to present a small glimpse into the lives of Karrenhappuck, John, their children (Laura Susan Savage, Eliza E. Savage, Ur Thomas J. Savage, Elizabeth Jane Savage, Savilla M. Savage, Mary Savage) and thousands of descendants.

16 Many published histories on this family will list an additional daughter named Lydia Ann Savage, born in These histories are often contradictory and in my opinion, incorrect. I find it difficult to believe that at the age of fifty-nine (1861), Karrenhappuck Friend had one final child. If I am wrong, I apologize to those descendants not included in this book. Additionally, one daughter (Savilla M. Savage) and her extended family, are only briefly outlined in this book. When working on this project, the amount of available material on Savilla s family grew to over nine hundred pages and was published in a two-volume set as: John Henry Friend, Savilla M. Savage and their Descendants, Book I & Book II. Lastly, Karrenhappuck (Kerrenhappuck) Friend was my four times great aunt. It has been my pleasure in attempting to preserve a portion of the information on Karrenhappuck (Kerrenhappuck) Friend, John Robinson Savage, and their family before it is forgotten for all time.

17 The Military Lots of Garrett County Some land deeds in this book refer to the Military Lots (ML) of Garrett County, MD. This excerpt was first published in The Maps and Papers of William H.H. Friend (2006), pp and presents a brief explanation of the Military Lot system. Military Lots are another key component to these maps and surveys. The American Revolution taxed colonial resources to the breaking point and by 1777 the Continental Army was desperate for troops. The MD General Assembly passed a law designed to encourage men to volunteer for the army. Each volunteer that completed three years of military service would receive one fifty-acre lot of land. A recruiting officer, who enlisted twenty able bodied men, would receive two fifty acres lots, while officers were to receive four fifty acres lots. The MD General Assembly determined that the lots were to be taken from Washington County on the western side of Fort Cumberland, MD (present day Allegany and Garrett Counties). It was not until 1787, six years after the war, that Colonel Francis Deakins would lead ten teams and survey 4165 fifty-acre lots in the lands that lie to the West of Fort Cumberland. The 1787 Deakins Map

18 Only land that could be farmed was surveyed, with the less assessable mountainous areas were excluded from the map. This accounts for large open areas on the map. The standard Military Lot was a rectangle, measuring 100 perches (1650 feet) by 80 perches (1320 feet), containing 50 acres, although numerous lots were not rectangles. The Northern (Mason Dixon Line) and Western borders of the Deakin s Map are delineated with mile markers.

19 The Southern border is marked by the Potomac River. The Deakin s Map incorporates over eighty existing plots, which are labeled in red and yellow. The Northwestern section of the Deakin s Map appears to be the same scale as a modern map. If an outline of present day Western MD is superimposed over the Deakin s Map, it demonstrates two things. First, the Northwestern and Western part of the county match up well, yet the Eastern half of the 1787 map is off scale. The dotted line of the modern map shows the division between Allegany and Garrett Counties, with the Savage River positioned at the Southern end of this line.

20 The Savage River on the Deakin s Map is about three miles to the West of the location on a present day map. Additionally, the course the Potomac River is dramatically different between the two maps. The 1787 Military Lots created by Francis Deakins and his survey teams are still used in the present day to buy and sell land in Garrett County, MD.
