2 P A G E 2 Welcome to the latest edition of your Division Newsletter. On behalf of the Board of Governors, I would like to extend to all of you the best wishes of the season and hope you have a Happy New Year. Hopefully you have all had a chance to spend time with family and friends during the holiday season. From the Chair With the New Year come new challenges. Hamilton Division of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires has been successful in recent years because we stick to the foundations of who we are and do what we do best. Our Commissionaires have shared in that success. Our goal is to continue with these practices. As you are all aware, we are living in tough economic times. Coupled with aggressive actions by our competition (for profit security firms) this is making our work even harder. While our competitors overriding goal is to make money at all costs, ours remains supporting and providing meaningful employment for our Commissionaires at wages well above the industry standards. Our Commissionaires have repaid us by providing outstanding service to our clients. That is a key reason why our renewal rate is by far the highest in the industry. I can assure you that this has not gone unnoticed. We continue to produce the highest level of service at competitive rates. This will not change. However, none of us can take anything for granted. The teamwork displayed by all of our members in the past must continue in order to ensure that we remain competitive and therefore successful well into the future. In fact, we must redouble our efforts. If we do, the Division will continue to be successful. Thank you for your continued efforts As your CEO I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy new year and to share a few thoughts as we move into The security industry is changing rapidly, driven by today s business environment and challenging economic conditions. Across our client base and across the country, businesses increasingly want to see results, not just reports. I strongly believe the traditional, old school security model of observe and report has had its best days. It is important for security firms to possess a depth of competence in a range of services that spans the spectrum of clients business needs where our commitment is to not only advise, but also to implement new technologies and deliver market leading innovations and results. The CEO s Desk At Commissionaires Hamilton our customers are the true heart of our business and we listen and respond to their concerns. Acting responsibly is an integral part of what we do and it makes good business sense. We want to be successful but we also want to make a difference. We work collaboratively with our clients to deliver the best possible value for their dollar and in doing so we build an inseparable relationship with our customers by understanding their needs and delivering solutions they truly value. Commissionaires Hamilton s security business is boosted by our strong client relationships built over many years of providing reliable, responsible service. You may see an example of these relationships inside this newsletter where our clients have attended our Annual Awards Dinner. We are truly gratified by partnerships we have developed with our clients over the years. These relationships depend on our clients appreciation of our competence and professionalism and the hard work put in by all Commissionaires at their worksites. Our team of Commissionaires are some of the most outstanding people that I have worked with over the past forty years which includes my time in the Army. Our record of delivering on our promise to create a safe and secure workplace for clients staff and visitors has contributed to maintaining and ensuring our success. Our values are the heart of our organization and your adherence to those values are the main reason we are Trusted Everyday Everywhere. T H E C O R P S R E S P O N D E N T

7 NEWSLETTER OF THE HAMILTON DIVISION PAGE Commissionaire Medal of Bravery Commissionaire Daniel Garvey displayed a conspicuous act of bravery in the rescue of the home occupant from grievous injury if not death on 13 July Upon observing a plume of smoke while on city By-Law patrol in the City of Cambridge, Commissionaire Garvey drove to the fire location. Realizing that the home owner was in the burning building, Commissionaire Garvey entered the smoke filled house and evacuated the owner. He then warned the occupants of the adjacent houses to the danger. Noticing that the home owner had re-entered the burning building, Commissionaire Garvey returned to the entrance and through the thick black smoke detected the owners position. Commissionaire Garvey then, without regard for the great danger to his personal well being, re-entered the burning building and assisted the occupant to safety across the road and away from the fire scene. Without doubt had Commissionaire Garvey not re-entered the burning house a second time the owner would have quickly been overcome by the smoke and most certainly would have perished. The conspicuous bravery Commissionaire Garvey exhibited in this heroic act reflects great credit upon himself, the Hamilton Division of Commissionaires and the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires as a whole. Queen s Diamond Jubilee Medal It has just been announced by the Department of National Defence that our Administration Manager, Ken Brady is to be awarded the Jubilee Medal for his work in the Canadian Cadet Movement. Congratulations Ken! Commissionaire Garvey being congratulated by Major J. Petozzi, Chair of the Board of Governors. Commissionaire Garvey with Sergeant Don Taylor, Detachment Commander (left) and Client Contacts Ms Nicole Papke and Mr. Hardy Bromberg. 7

8 Commissionaires Assist at Lincoln Alexander s Funeral The following is from Ms Pam Carver, Manager, Parking Enforcement & School Safety for the City of Hamilton: I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their decorum, diplomacy, courtesy and discretion on Fri Oct 26/12 during the Honourable Lincoln Alexander's funeral. A special thank you to the Corps staff who assisted motorists in directing them to park elsewhere. Your diplomacy and discretion were exemplary. To all the staff who assisted the funeral VIP attendees in the garage and in Summers Lane and those who assisted the public in Commonwealth Square you did us all proud with your courtesy and helpfulness. I was very proud to be a part of this team who represented the City with great pride and dignity on such a solemn day. Kudos to everyone! We also assisted in a very different way as well. While our Director of Operations, Tom Lee was outside of our building, he was approached by a gentleman who noticed the Corps crest on Tom blazer. He asked Tom if he knew where he could get a couple of poppies in a hurry. Tom came up to the office asking Ken Brady if we had any. Not having any in the office Ken stated he had a couple in his car. Everyone paraded down to the parking lot where Ken presented the gentleman with two poppies. It turned out the gentleman was on the protection detail for Lieutenant Governor David Onley. They had left Toronto in such a hurry that they had forgotten to get poppies. So if you watched the funeral on TV, the poppies the Lieutenant Governor and his wife were wearing were provided by Commissionaires Hamilton.
