2 FROM THE VICAR'S PEN Dear Friends in Christ Jesus, In our Christian journey as Anglicans we find that our churchmanship defers from person to person. The beauty of the Anglican Church is that these different types of worship add beauty and colour and meaning to our Christian spiritual lives. At St. Michael s we find that the traditional sung Eucharist is held every Sunday in the morning. While we use the ancient and modern hymnal, there are many who worship here who have valued it. These hymns come from a very deep rooted spiritual experience that evolves from the depth of their heart and therefore have a very strong meaningful theology behind every hymn. These hymns are quite different to the choruses that we do sing. The choruses are mainly composed through the experiences and spirituality of the Psalmist. Many of the Psalms as you know have been written by King David. Specially for a younger groups, the wording and the tunes go a long way, since the tune makes a big difference in the way they sing and instruments they use. We at St. Michael s are privileged to have a pipe organ, though old but produces excellent music that helps us with the singing. I am thankful to Dr. Lalith Perera and Mr. Ranjith Seneviratne who has helped us a great deal to keep this valuable gift alive. I would like some of our younger group too, to get in touch with them to know the mechanism how it works, so that for many more years to come we will be able to use it for good Anglican Worship. Sing to Him a new song; play skilfully, and shout for joy Psalm 33:1-3 From the 8 th of August to the 30 th of August I am taking my annual holiday with my family to spend time with my two daughters abroad. We really look forward to spend our time with our two grandchildren. All services are arranged and there will be inspiring visiting preachers at all 7:30 am Sung Eucharist Services. I presume you will all join and enjoy the services and help our clergy specially when I am away. Please be free to walk into the parish office and meet Malathi and Hemal for all your parochial needs. The pastoral responsibilities will be done by Rev. Victor Navaratne assisted by Rev. Jency Manjuka. Of course I find some do attend the 12 noon service. If that is so, I am satisfied since you are attending one of the services at St. Michael s. In case you worship elsewhere and not very keen to attend St. Michael s, I need to know as your Vicar. I have begun to do my home visits and that will give me a background of my flock better. Deadline: 16th August 2014 WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES: GAZA, 22 JULY 14 Expressing grave concern over the escalation of military operations in Gaza, the World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit said, Hostilities must cease. Israel, Palestine and the surrounding region must be offered the hope of peace: a peace based in justice, a lasting peace that may lead toward reconciliation. In an official statement from the WCC issued on 22 July, Tveit expressed deep sadness over the human devastation on every side, and the disproportionately high number of Palestinian civilian casualties, including women and children. On behalf of the 345 member churches of the WCC, Tveit appealed to all parties to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law which c o n d e m n a n d p r o h i b i t a l l k i n d s o f indiscriminate and disproportionate killing of civilians. Tveit shared the WCC s call for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza. He urged lifting of restrictions on the movement of persons and goods in and out of the Gaza Strip so that urgent humanitarian needs can be dealt with. In the statement, WCC also called for the resumption of direct peace talks to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable peace based upon a two-state solution along internationally recognized borders. Tveit said that the latest resort to armed conflict and the consequent intolerable suffering inflicted on families and communities can do nothing to promote a just and sustainable peace for Israelis and Palestinians. He added that peace in Israel and Palestine will come only through the restoration of compassion between human beings, through seeking together common paths towards justice and peace, and through a genuine commitment to creating the basis for future generations of Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side in peace. 11 of 12
