We crossed the month of July by the Almighty God s guidance and grace. His protecting arm was with us to safeguard us and provided the necessities. We offer thanks to Him alone. In July, the Lord helped us to complete the English camp in a good manner. Many of our church members were able to participate in the Bible Treasure Hunt exam. We need to thank God for both. In the month of August we are going to celebrate the Independence Day on 15 th August. We are going to spend the whole day meaningfully Flag hoisting, prayer, baptismal service and outreach programme. We need to pray for all these programmes. Last month we meditated on this theme ARRAY ALL THE ARMOR OF THE ALMIGHTY TO ANNIHILATE THE ACTIONS OF THE ARCHFIEND. We are Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 3

4 going to meditate the same this month also. Paul writes this spiritual truth to the Ephesians Church members that they can stand against Satan. These armors are God-given ones, not invented or made by mankind. Having worn all these armors, we should not sit, not lie down and not sleep but we are to stand and take position. When we stand against Satan, he fears. Often we never try to stand against him. Laziness, weakness, lukewarmness, etc., sometimes prevent us from taking a stand. Paul kept on commanding the Ephesian church members to stand and stand still. It is the watchword in this passage. When we wear these armors, they grant us the new enthusiasm and new hope and they give us the courage to stand. Satan fears before the person who stands but destroys the person who fears him. Let us follow the admonition of Paul and array all the armor of the Almighty to stand against Satan. Let me greet all the members who celebrate their Wedding anniversary and Birthdays this month. May the Lord bless you all! Yours in His Church Ministry, Rev.P.Koilraj. ப தகர மடல mjpfhuj;jpd; mjpgjpahfpa, nartpd; ehkj;jpy; tho;j;jf;fs;! Spurgeon never preached a complete sermon on the Third Word from the Cross according to the records available. However, this brief and heart-warming expression of his will provide much food for thought and action.) Now, there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:25 Last at the cross, first at the sepulcher, no woman s lip betrayed her Lord; no woman s hand ever smote Him; their eyes wept for Him; they gazed upon Him with pitying awe and love. God bless the Marys! When we see so many of them about the cross, we feel that we honour the very name of Mary. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple standing by, whom He loved, He saith unto His mother, Woman, behold thy son! John 19:26 Sad, sad spectacle! Now was fulfilled the word of Simeon, Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. Did the Saviour mean, as He gave a glance to John, Woman, thou art losing one Son; but yonder stands another, who will be a son to thee in my absence? Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! John 19:27a Take her as thy mother, stand thou in My place, care for her as I have cared for her. Those who love Christ best shall have the honour of taking care of His Church and of His poor. Never say of any poor relative or friend, the widow or the fatherless, They are a great burden to me. Oh, no! Say, They are a great honour to me; my Lord has entrusted them to my care. John thought so; let us think so. Jesus selected the disciple He loved best to take His mother under His care. He selects those whom He loves today, and puts His poor people under their wing. Take them gladly, and treat them well. And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. John 19:27b You expected him to do it, did you not? He loved His Lord so well. Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 5

The Discipline of Application of God s Word D.C.Franklin Meditation and application are the main purpose for every means of intake of God s word: hearing, reading, studying and memorising. However, because of its importance, we studied Meditation as a separate topic in the last issue, and now we are studying Application as a separate topic because it is the ultimate purpose for the intake of God s word. Application is like the light on top of the Light House. Without the light, the tower is just a dummy; application is the last and the most important link in the chain of intake of God s word. Nothing can make this truth clearer than the concluding words of our Lord in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 7: 21 27: Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers! Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 11

12 practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. More Verses on Application Jesus commanding reply to the lawyer after the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: 37 go and do likewise is not just to the lawyer but also to all people. We read in John 13: 12-17: After he had finished washing the disciples feet Jesus put on his clothes and returned to his place and said: Do you understand what I have done for you? he asked them. You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. The concluding verses of Matthew28: 18-20: Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. In Luke 11: we read: As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you. He replied, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it. We read in James 1: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it they will be blessed in what they do. Again in James 2: You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is dead? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. In the well-known Hall of Faith chapter, Hebrews 11, we read about people of faith who obeyed the Lord. Mortal Danger There is mortal danger in hearing but not doing because a heart that kept hearing the words of Christ but did not fill with the love of Christ will not just remain empty, but will start filing with evil and turn those people into betrayers of Christ. We hear Jesus tell about Judas in Mark 14: 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born. Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 12

13 Cain did not obey God s warning, his heart became more evil and he murdered his brother (Gen 4: 3-11). The miraculous words of his donkey did not lead Balam to repentance; he perished (Num 23-25, Josh 13: 22).When Saul disobeyed Samuel told him the well known verse in 1Samuel 15: 22-23: But Samuel replied: Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king. He did not repent and became more evil, in the end, he took his own life (1Sam 15-31).The Pharisees, Sadducees and the High priests of Jesus time all knew God s word but never obeyed and became the enemies of Christ. The church politicians of today who manipulate people to get what they want, those who profit from the church through corrupt means, people who bribe to get positions and the people who receive it, people who show favouritism in caste, status, etc., these are people who kept hearing God s word but never obeyed it in their life. The warning by John the Baptist in Matthew 3: against such people shows the mortal danger they are in: The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire. The warning in Hebrews 10: 26-31: If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, It is mine to avenge; I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge his people. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. The Difficulty Application of God s Word is difficult because it is obeying the perfect law of God (James 1: 25), or keeping the principles of heaven, or behaving exactly like the perfect Son of Man (Son of God who became Son of Man), while each of us still carry within us a fleshly nature ever since the fall. Is not it terrifying to hear Jesus say in Matthew 5: 48 be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect? We hear Paul command us in Philippians 2: 12 to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. However, in the next verse (Phil 2: 13)he says, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil his good purpose. God is sovereign over everything. We are his children, and his purpose for choosing us out of the world is to perfect us through everything he allows in our lives; Continued in Page-18 Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 13

18 The Discipline of Application of God s Word- Continued we read in Rom 8: 28, 29: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. Dying to Live A disciple s life starts with death. That is when he also starts applying God s word in his life. At regeneration, our spiritual life comes alive, and our fleshly nature starts dying. We read that in Colossians 3: 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. However, the flesh does not die all at once. It continues dying all its earthly life, day by day. That is why Paul tells in the next but one verse (Colossians 3: 5) Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. It was Jesus who first called us for dying to our fleshly nature: Mt 16: Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? We read in Romans 6: 2-14 We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. Obey to understand We do not understand him in order to obey, but obey him in order to understand because of who he is, the Sovereign Lord who knows the end from the beginning. Isaiah 46: 10 sings: I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 18

19 Abraham did not ask, Why Lord? when God asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac. He first obeyed (Gen 22: 1-18), later he understood God is Jehovah Jireh. Peter did not understand the vision (Acts 10: 10-48) but later understood with amazement (Act 10: 45) the purpose of God when the Gentile Cornelius, his household, his relatives and close friends (Acts 10: 24) received the Holy Spirit (Acts 10: 44). Paul did not question when God prevented him from going to Asia. When the vision was given to go to Macedonia he obeyed immediately (Act 16: 10). Only later he must have understood the purposes of God when the wonderful missionary church of Philippi came into being in Macedonia in support of his mission (Acts 16: 6-40; Phil 1:3-6, 2:17-18, 4:1,10,15-16, 18-19) The Motives (1 & 2) Reverence Obedience comes out of reverence for our God because he is the Sovereign King, our ultimate authority. We are his subjects; we need to submit to his authority. Exodus 20: 20 Moses said to the people, Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning. Job 1: 1 This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. Psalm 2: says: Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Paul talks about the glory of Christ in Colossians 1: The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. The entire first chapter of book of Hebrews talks about the majesty of Christ, starting with these words of exaltation of Christ in Hebrews 1: 1-3 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. The beautiful Hymn in Philippians 2: 6-11 sings about Christ s obedience to his Father and his Exaltation by the Father: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing, by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself, by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross! Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 19

20 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place, and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Love God is our heavenly father, our great shepherd, our Lord and Saviour, our friend, our Husband (Is 54: 5, Mk 2: 18-20, Rev 19: 7); we Love him above everything else; love is not mere feeling; true love is action; we love him by obeying him. We read in John 14:21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them. 1John 5: 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome. 2John: 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. The Goal During the Reformation, the church fathers taught the church foundational truths of Scripture through a series of questions and answers, known as the catechism. The first catechism question and its answer bring out the Goal of our life including applying God s word: Q. What is the chief end of man? A. Man s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. We were created in the image of God (Gen 1:27, 5: 1-2) and for the glory of God. We glorify God in everything we do. In addition, we do that with the joy of his eternal presence. 1 Chronicles 16:9-10 Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. 1 Chron 16:29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness. Isaiah 43:7everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. 1Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 2Thessalonians 1:12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. John 15:8 This is to my Father s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. Ephesians 1: In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. Philippians 1:11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God. 1Peter 4:11If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 20

21 power for ever and ever. Amen. True Representatives of Christ Many churches today have towers (steeples). Of course, we keep a cross on top, which is a symbolic representation of Christ. However, the true and living representation of Christ is the sanctified people of the church, who live by God s word; people who behave like Christ. They have true love.1cor13:1-13, Rom 8: 35-39, 1Jn 3: 16-18, 1Jn 4: 7-21 They have the peace of Christ. Is 26: 3, Phil 4: 6-7,Col 3: 15 They have the mind of Christ.Rom8: 5-9, 1Cor 2: 16, Phil 2: 5 They have the wisdom of Christ and the character of Christ. Jam 3: They have the fruit of the spirit. Gal 5: 22, 23 They are filled with God s Word. Col 3: 16 They are indwelt by the Spirit of Christ.1Cor 3: 16, 1Cor 6: 19, 2Cor6: 16, Eph 2: 21,22 They glorify God in everything they do.1cor 10: 31, Col 3: 17, Col 3: They are content at all times. Ps 23: 1,1Tim 6: 6-10 They are not anxious about anything. Ps 55:22, 1Pet 5:7 They depend on God for everything. Ps 23: 2, Mt 7: 7-11, Jn 16: They are joyful in the face of trials and persecution. Mt 5: 10-12, Jn 15: 11, Jn 16: 20-22, Jn 17: 13, Phil 4: 4 They are fearless but not arrogant Ps 23: 4, Ps 46: 1-11, Is: 41: 10, Mt 10: 16-39, 1Jn 4: 18 We will close this with Paul s words: Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.(philippians 4:9) Kids Section Mrs. Iris Irwin The letters in each column of the puzzle will go into the squares below them (in the same column), but not necessarily in the order they appear. Each letter can be used only once. A black square indicates the end of the word. A word broken at the end of a line will continue on the next line. When you have placed all the letters in their correct squares, you will be able to read a verse across the grid from left to right. Each column has the exact number of letters for that column - don't mix columns. Hint: Start with 2 or 3 letter words. Cross out the letters used.
