FROM DESK OF Dr. SADAGOPACHARIAR SWAMIGAL MaanasAraadhanam SlOkams MaanasAraadhanam (M.A) is done prior to BhahyAradhanam (B.A) and is considered even superior to B.A by our acharyas. We can offer the Lord all victuals, rare treats with our mind alone. It is the unison of thoughts and unwavering focus on Him that is needed in M.A. There are three SlOkams that Sri Ram Gopalaswamy referred to for M.A. The first one, "KurmAdheen --" is not part of the M. A. in the Sri Sannidhi tradition. Hence I will focus on the two other slokams, which are indeed part of the M.A. The first of the three slokams is a salutation to VishNu BhakthAs such as the Nithya SUris at Sri Vaikuntam (VishvaksEnA, Anantha, VynathEyA and Dwara PaalakAs, KumudhA and Mukhya ganas of the Lord. The slokam visualizes the Lord being seated on a lotus at the centre of the dharma peetam and on the lap of AdhisEshA under the Gem bedecked mantapam supported by a giant tortoise. There the Lord receives fan (Chaamara) service (kaimkaryam) from the female attendants. He is visualized as being seated with His Devis and displaying His divya Ayudhams (weapons) and AbharaNams (jewelery). GarudA is holding the Lord's feet in his hands at the foot of the SeshAsanam. The slokam ends with prapatthi to those VishNu BhakthAs in Sri Vaikuntam in the spirit of Bhagavatha Nishtai. TheRemaining Two SlOkAs of M.A 1. AaradhayAmi Hrudhi The anvaya Kramam for this slokam is as follows: MaayApurE Hridhi aatmagehe, hrudhaya pankaja Sannivishtam Kesavam ArAdhayAmi; sraddha nadhee vimala jala abhishekai: SamAdhi kusumai:, apunarbhavaya nithyam (ArAdhayAmi).

At the centre of the mysterious and wonderful city known as my body there is a palace and in the heart of it is the lotus, where Lord Kesavan resides (as AntharyAmi Brahmam). I perform Thirumanjanam for Him with the waters known as pure mind from the river of SraddhA (maha ViswAsam). After that I conduct His worship with the flowers known as DhyAnam (meditation, ceaseless remembrance) for gaining the boon of nonreturn to this world of births and deaths (Moksham). The echoes of this prayer can be heard in MahA NaarayaNOpanishad passages such as: Manthram 1.11: hrudha maneesha mansa abhikluptho ya yenam vidhu: amruthasthe bhavanthi (Those who meditate on Him with their minds undistractedly and fixed in the heart lotus know Him; they become immortal). The body is known as Brahmapuram analogous to the capital of a king. There is a royal mansion in that city to which the lotus of the heart is compared. The king (paramathma) resides there. He must be sought there by those, who need His anugraham for Moksham. This has to be done by fixed, undistractedly meditation on Him. Manthram 2.16 describes the MayApuri and the Kesavan residing there in the heart lotus inside the palace of MayApuri this way: "In the citadel of the body, there is the small sinless and pure lotus of the heart, which is the residence of the ParamaathmA. Further in the interior of this small area, there is the sorrowless ether. That is to be meditated upon continously. "Such a focussed dhyanam on the antharyami Brahmam (ether /gaganam) in the hrudh pundareekam leads to Moksham. Brahma Sutram too asserts the same this way: "anavritti sabdhath". Bhagavadh GithA assures one about non-return to the World of births and deaths, when one has become successful in such a meditation (Bh.G 8.15): napnuvanthi MahAthmana: Samsiddhim paramam gatha : NaarayaNAnuvAkam points out the place, where one has to worship the Lord to attain Moksha Siddhi of no return to this world of repeated birhts and deaths this way: padma kosa pratheekasam Hrudhayam chapyadhomukham --- tasyanthe sushiragum sookshmam tasmin sarvam prathishtitham----tasya; sikhaya madhye ParamAthmA vyavasthitha: Sa BrahmA sa Siva: sendra: Sokshar: parama svarat That is the manaseeka ArAdhanam that the first slokam refers to.

SlOkam 2: SouvarNE sthalivarye --- Meaning: I offer unto my Lord residing in my heart lotus as antharyami Brahmam tasty preparations cooked in pure ghee from cow's butter. These are Bhakshyams (eatables), BhOjyams (victuals), Lehyams (medicinal digestives), Superior Havis, soshyams (fried Food), cooked rice (annam), cooked vegetables with seasonings, curd, honey, ghee, milk, water. I have placed them all in different golden vessels and am presenting it to Him with my mind (maanaseeka samarpanam) for His enjoyment. At the end, I offer this antharyami Brahmam residing in my heart lotus, betels and areca nut (TaampUlam) as well, with my mind as Maanasa upacharam. The examples of Maanaseeka NaivEdhyam of foods and offering of ThAmpUlam by a devout BhakthA can be seen in number of Saint ThyagarAjA's krithis : Thodi Raagam : "AragimpavE, paalaragimpave Saaramaina divyannamu shadrasayutha BhakshaNamulu dhara sodharadhulatho, ThyagarAja vinutha, Aaragimpave" (Sri RamA! pray drink this milk. Accept this offering of butter and milk made holy by the touch of SitA, and the delicious chitrannamsand cakes to cater to the six varieties of taste. Partake of them in company with Your consort, brothers and others. KaraharapriyA: Vidamu seyave, Nannu vidanadakave {Pray accept the TampUlam (Paansupaari) and do not discard me. Accept this with all the spices, as from the hands of SitA devi, while LakshmaNA, with all his royal dignity holds the gem-bedecked spit-toon in his hand}. Ahiri Raagam : pula panpu meedha---- Oh ParipurNa kalyana guna svarupa! Please rest well on this bed covered with fragrant Jasmine flowers after drinking honey, sugared milk and butter and chewing delicious paansupari and after blessing me. Please accept this fragrant sandal paste to smear on Your body, wear the bright flower-garlands around your neck, and accept the bed prepared according to the SaasthrAs, while being convinced thatwhatever ThyagarAja, your servant, does is with sraddha and MahA viswasam.that is the type of Maanaseeka PujA and Kaimkaryam that cuts the bonds of SamsArA and makes one never return to this earth.the Bhavam and the RasAnubhavam is the most important element in Manaseeka ArAdhanam to secure the Lord's anugraham.

Gita The Wisdom of Krishna Practical Guide to Right and Happy Living: In Twenty - Seven Self-contained Essays: Thotalam Chellaswami, Trustee, Srinivasa Gita Satsangh Trust (Retired Senior I. E. S. Officer Govt. of India and Senior Advisor UN (ILO): 21. Arjuna responded by saying that his delusion is destroyed and he had regained his memory by the Grace of wisdom of Krishna imparted to Him and that he is ready to fight in obedience to His advice nasht o mohah smritirlabdhaa tvat prasaadaat, karishye vacanam tava. 22. Concluding his long narration (Gita Sermon) to king Dhritaraashtra, the wise Sanjaya puts the entire teaching in a nutshell as it were, short and sweet. Sanjaya sums up the position in (18.78), considered as one verse commentary on the Gita Sermon: Where the Deity is enshrined in the innermost self, with hands actively engaged in holy action, there is assured all-round well-being : 23. The Gita Sermon The Message of Joy and Cheer: In concluding this section it may be stated that Krishna wanted to impress, at the very outset, upon the sorrowing and despondent Arjuna, because of his undue attachment to his kith and kin and through him the entire humanity, the message of joy and cheer. All problems of mankind are of its own making. Life is as we want it to be joy or sorrow. The choice is ours. Unfortunately we choose wrongly influenced by our egoism ignorance of our true divine nature. Both the Verses 2.11 and 18.66, the start and the conclusion of the Sermon, together emphasise the message of joy and cheer resulting from Knowledge of the individual soul and its intimate relation to God as an immortal and eternal ams a (part) of the Supreme Deity and supreme faith in the efficacy of surrender to the Supreme, with thought, word and deed supremely harmonised. For the jnaani the innermost reality is the indwelling spirit of God and the jnaani having realized this, attains self-realisation. For the bhakta the Deity is the one and only refuge and hope for salvation and he whole-heartedly surrenders to Him and thereby attains liberation. 24. It is in the above stated manner that Krishna shows the way to Aruna to get out of his despondency and gain supreme freedom and bliss from this earthly existence. But a way is no way unless, step by step, one travels it. It is note - worthy that, in the Gita, Krishna not only points out the way but also travels it along with Arjuna, by what Krishna calls the boat of knowledge (jnaana plavena), leading Arjuna from his dogmatic and altogether inadequate position to one of liberation and embodied vision inner peace and fulfillment. Let us also join this fascinating spiritual journey and travel alongside of Krishna and Arjuna, step by step, a journey in which we see how Arjuna, the confused and mechanical man, becomes first a balanced man and eventually a jnaani and a bhakta to declare unequivocally karshye vacanam tava I shall carry out Thy word. This spiritual journey Gita Sermon The Wisdom of Krishna, will take us to the summit of liberation (moksha). 25. Having discussed in some detail Chapter one - Arjuna Vishaada Yoga and its significance, we will go on to discuss Krishn a s response to Arjuna s prayer in - Essay No. 3: Bhagavad Gita The Wisdom of Krishna: Krishna s Response to Arjuna s Problem of Despondency:

DHARMA STHOTHRAM Part 18 Sharvah, Sivah In 25th nama Sarvah, apart from Gita 11.40,we can find Sarvah in 6.30 also. Yo mam pasyathi sarvatra sarvam cha maya pasyathi, which tells as one who sees me everywhere and anywhere and sees all things in me. To such a person I am never lost nor in such a person ever lost to me. This reminds a great saying Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah. In the present day context it can be said as' If we do not maintain justice, justice will not maintain us'. In Gita 10.8 also Krishna tells as I am of everything, the coming forth into being from me everything is set forth into motion..nammazhwar says the same thing in his Thiruvaimozhi as Sriman narayana is Yavarum evarum thane (3.4.10).In Vishnupuranam also Sarva bhuto yatho hari conveys the same meaning. The next 26th Nama is Sharvah is the auspicious nature. Sriman Narayana gives auspiciousness for ever to devotees to all who have a vision, meditation, and pray Him. Though the previous nama is similar in pronouncing, it has a special meaning as 'the remover.he not only resides everywhere, but also removes the evils of all objects that are His body.the famous sloka in Gita Partithranaya sadhunam vinachaya ca dushkratam which also comes in palasruthi of Sahasranama explains only as His manifestation is for destruction of evils. In 27th nama Sivah it is said that He is eternally pure. Sriman Narayana is so pure with no contamination or imperfection of gunas like Rajas and Tamas. He is Brahman He is Siva and He is absolute one of Vishnu. When we worship Sriman Narayana

with such Satwam characters, we can practice in this way, to be pure in our Janma. which Swami Shivananda puts them in the form of a small song. Eighteen all important virtues one ought to develop and practice. They are: Serenity, regularity, absence of Vanity, Sincerity, Simplicity, Veracity, Equanimity, Fixity, Non-irritability, Adaptability, Humility, Tenacity, Integrity, Nobility, Magnanimity, Charity, Generosity, Purity Practice daily these eighteen ities, You will soon attain immortality; Mr. So-and-So is a false non-entity; You will abide in eternity and infinity; You will behold unity in diversity; You cannot attain this in the University. While Vishnu Sahasranamam is the greatest of the secrets, powerful of the powers, that can make one even to win over Lord Krishna,, Azhwars also felt the same and bring this fact in their pasurams. In Nalayira Divya Prabhandam,Azhwars realized the divine and use every bit of their glorious knowledge and wealth in the service of Sriman Narayana as a precious boon in life. In the ecstatic of Bhakthi, or love towards SrimanNarayana, Azhwars felt causeless compassion and limitless praises, though mentioned as Ayiram pallandu or as Ayiram nama. When they poured their fine divine experience in the form of sacred compositions, they also quote about Sahasranama somewhere like these mentioned here. In Periazhwar's Thiruppallandu 5th pasuram Ayiram namam solli He says as let us chant the one thousand namas and sing May you live long for many years, many thousands of years. In Andal's Nachiar Thirumozhi, 2nd Thirumozhi which starts with Namam Ayiram ninra Narayana explains how Andal and her friends enjoyed. They imagined themselves to be small girls in playing and making castles in sand. In a group of 10 pasurams in this their request to Lord not to damage their creation of castles in sand. In Nammazhwar's Thiruvaimozhi, 3.9,Orayiram perum udaiya piran and Thirumangai Azhwar's siriyathirumadal lines in concluding pasuram as Ennarum Seer Perayiramum pithatri and many such references can be seen as they are only on Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam.. 20 SRIVAISHNAVIM SRIMADH BHAAGAVATHAM. KRISHNA HUGGED NANDA AND SAID YOU AND YASODA ONLY BROUGHT ME LIKE YOUR CHILD WITH AFFECTION. YOU ALSO RETURN TO GOKULAM. WE WILL ALSO JOIN YOU AFTER LIVING WITH THESE RELATIVES FOR SOME YEAR. THEN HE SENT BACK NANDAN AND OTHERS TO GOKULAM. VASUDEVAR, DID ALL THE SAMSKAARAMS TO BALARAMA AND KRISHNA THRO GARGAR, THEIR KULA GURU. HE DID UPANAYANAM FOR THEM. HE MADE THEM DIVAJARGAL AND BRAHMACHARIGAL. WHEN KRISHNA WAS BORN HE WAS IN THE JAIL. AND AT THAT TIME HE HAD IN HIS MIND TO GIVE GODHAAN TO BRAHMINS. HENCE NOW HE GAVE GODHAAN TO MANY BRAHMINS. THOUGH BALARAMA AND KRISHNA ARE SARVAGNARGAL, TO FOLLOW THE THE SAMPRADHAAYAM HE DECIDED TO ARRANGE FOR GURUKULAVAASAM. HENCE HE SENT THEM TO SANTIPINI MAHARISHI WHO WAS AT UJJAYIN. THERE THEY LEARNT VEDAS, DANUR VEDA, VEDANTANGAL, RAJANEEDI, etc.,, LEARNT SIXTY KALAIS IN SIXTY FOUR DAYS. THEY DID EVERYTHING AS A SAKE OF LEARNING. THEN WHEN THEIR GURUKULA VAASAM WAS COMPLETED, THEY ASKED THEIR GURU WHAT DO YOU WANT AS GURU DAKSHINA? GURU KNOWS PRETTY WELL THAT BALARAMA AND KRISHNA ARE ORINARY PEOPLE. HE KNOWS THEY ARE AVATHAARA PURUSHARGAL HENCE HE HE ASKED SOME THING BEYOND FOR A ORDINARY MAN TO FULL FILL. WHAT IS THAT? AND WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARDS. WE WILL SEE NEXT WEEK.

VALMIKI RAMAYANA By Dr. Saroja Ramanujam, M.A.,Ph.D, siromani Yuddhakanda 3. Vibheeshana goes to Rama. In Kamban, the city of Lanka which was destroyed by Hanuman was rebuilt by Maya, the architect of asuras. Then Kamban describes the council of Ravana in which he excluded the sages and devas and those whom he thought may not be favourable to his plan of fighting Rama for the sake of Seetha. When he asked the opinion of all regarding the next move, all his ministers and officers advised him to fight saying that they were powerful enough to vanquish Rama and the vanaras. Kumbhakarna said that it was highly improper for a person like Ravana who conquered the whole world to abduct the wife of someone belonging to another species and also who destroyed the whole army of Khara single handed and by this act of Ravana the whole fame of the rakshasa have been dimmed and it was shameful to the whole rakshasa race. But he said since Ravana had done it anyway he would support him and suggested that they should go and destroy Rama and the vanaraas before they advance to Lanka with their army. Ravana was exhilarated to hear it and said that they would start immediately. Then Indrajith spoke and said that he alone was capable of destroying them all and offered to go alone then Vibheeshana rose and rebuked Indrajith saying that he was immature and was bragging without understanding the situation properly. Then he said that Ravana was like his father, being the elder brother, and deserves worship but the thought that he was going to lose his status equal to Indra prompted him to speak. Vibhaeeshana said that konagar muzuvadhum ninadhu kottramum jaanaki enum peyar ulagin tham manai aanaval karpinaal vendhadhu alladhu Or vaanaram suttadhu enru unardhal maatchiyo The great city of Lanka and sovereignty of Ravana were burnt to ashes by the chastity of Seetha and not by a monkey. The long penance done by Ravana was going to be ruined by a woman. Vibheeshana reminded Ravana that when he lifted the Kailas he incurred the curse of Nandi that he would be defeated by a monkey and it came true in the case of Vali. Also he reminded Ravana of the words of Vedavati who entered fire when Ravana was about to force himself on her that she would be the terminal disease for him, implying that Seetha was no one else but Vedavati who had come to end his life. Then Vibheeshana narrated all the exploits of Rama beginning from the protection of the sacrifice of Visvamithra till the slaying of Vali and said that the Lord Naryana Himself had come in human form. But Ravana would not listen and ridiculed Vibheeshana for being afraid of humans and monkeys and asked him if the curse of Nandi was fruitful what had happened to all the other curses he incurred so

far. He further said that just because one monkey, Vali had vanquished him it did not mean that all monkeys should do so. He said that he had seen that the weapons of Siva or Vishnu were powerless before him and he was nor afraid even if Rama was Vishnu Himself. Then Vibheeshana said Rama was the Suoreme Being, the first cause of all, who had come with the explicit purpose of destroying him. To this Ravana replied that if it was so, what was He, the Sureme Being doing all these days? Vibheeshana then started relating the story of Narasimhavathara. Vibheeshana told Ravana how arrogant and egoistic was Hiranyakasipu and how his son Prahladha a devotee of the Lord Narayaana tried to change him. When Hiranyakasipu asked Prahladha what he had learnt from his preceptors thinking that he would extol the glory of himself, his father, Prahladha tried to instruct him of the ashatksharamanthra, Naamam annadhu kel :namonaaraayanaaya. Kamban devotes a whole chapter for relating the story of Prahladha, giving in detail how Hiranyakasipu tried to kill Prahladha and how the Lord saved him every time. Finally Kamban relates a long diologue between the father and son, the former emphasizing his own glory while the latter telling him that all glory belongs to the Lord. Then Hiranya demanded that Prahladha should prove that the Lord is everywhere, pointing to a pillar, threatening to kill Prahladha with his own hands if Hari did not manifest there. Prahladha said that he would take his own life if the Lord did not manifest wherever one touched. Then comes the legendary verse of Kamban. nasai thirandhu ilangappong i nanru nanru enna nakku, visai thirandhu urumu veezndhadhenna Or thoonin venri isai thirandhu uyrndha kaiyaal ettrinaan disai thirandhu andam keera cchiritthadhu acchenganseeyam The meaning of the versa is, when Hiranyakasipu, saying, well, well, raised his arm and hit the pillar with his mace, rifting open the directions and breaking the whole cosmos the red-eyed lion guffawed. The major deviation of Kamban from Valmiki consists in the inclusion of this episode. The legend has it that when Kamban was having the debut of his Ramayana in a mandapam in the temple of Srirangam when he started the Hiranya episode it was objected by the scholars there that it had no part in Ramayana. Kamban said that the Lord will be his judge and when he recited this verse the Narasimha who was there applauded with loud laugh and shaking His head. Vibheeshana finished the story explaining the battle between the Lord and Hiranya and the killing of Hiranya and the arrival of devas and the final blessing of Prahladha etc. Thus after advising Ravana referring to his glory and the subsequent dishonour which would end in his death Vibheeshana also reminded him of his earlier janma unwittingly but Ravana was not to be influenced. Ravana compared Vibheeshana with Prahladha, (which was true of course because he was also a great devotee of the Lord like Prahladha,) who was instrumental in the death of his own father and accused vibheeshana of being favourable to their enemy and of planning to get the kingdom after his death. Ravana said that Vibheeshana was like poison and ordered him to go away or else to meet his death. Then Vibheeshana rose in the air with his followers and said that he wished to avert the disaster of Ravana with all his kith and kin being killed by the arrows of Rama but Ravana was not listening. And he was going away and asked the forgiveness of his elder brother for having spoken thus.

4. Vibheeshana saranagathi Vibheeshana then started towards Rama and when he reached the other side of the ocean Sugreeva and others saw him and his four followers standing in the sky like a cloud with lightning, wearing bright ornaments and wielding weapons and thought that these rakshasas had come to attack them. The vanaras said that they would attack them first and make them fall down, and hearing their talk Vibheeshna, unafraid, said in a loud voice that he was the younger brother of Ravana who was wicked and committed a sin in carrying off Seetha and who would not listen to him when he advised him to return Seetha to Rama. Ravana also spoke harsh words and had driven him out of Lanka and now leaving all his kith and kin he had come to Rama for surrender. He requested them to inform Rama about his arrival. thyakthvaa puthraamscha dhaaraamscha raaghavam SaraNam gathah nivedhayatha maam kshipram raaghavaaya mahathmane These word of Vibheeshana and the words of Rama later declaring his vow to give surrender are important in highlighting Ramayana as saranagathi sastra and stand as the elucidation of the charama sloka of Gita sarvadharmaan parithyajaya maam ekam SaraNam vraja. We shall see the impact of these words later in the doctrine of surrender. Sugreeva immediately went to Rama and told him of the arrival of Vibheeshana and conveyed his opinion that he was not to be trusted because he was the brother of Ravana and might be sent by him to spy on them and had to be punished. Rama asked the opinion of the others and all spoke on the same lines as Vibheehsna did and Angadha suggested that they should examine Vibheeshana and could accept him if he was found to be trustworthy. Then Hanuman spoke and what he said was again a proof that he was buddhimathaam varishtah and sollin selvan. He said, na vaadhaan na api samgharshaan na aadhikyaan na ca kaamatah vakshyaami vachanam raajan yathaa artham raama gauravaat I do not speak out of desire for argument or in competition, nor out of superiority. But I wish to speak what is the reality due to the weight of the matter. Then he told Rama that the counseling of the others was not proper as it is not possible to examine his intentions without entrusting him with some work and it is not advisible to do so with respect to a stranger. Nothing could be proved by questioning as a clever person could surmount that without showing his real intention. Hanuman disagreed with Sugreeva that the occasion and timing was not suitable for Vibheeshana to approach Rama for surrender and said that it was indeed appropriate. Finding that Ravana was heading for a disaster and not amenable to advice, he left him and at the most he may have a wish to inherit the kingdom after Ravana, nothing more sinister. Hanuman then said that in his opinion there is nothing deceitful in Vibheeshana judging by his appearance and his face. Then he told Rama to take his own decision as he needed no advice, being equal to Brahaspathi in wisdom. Rama then spoke. He said that he also had already formed an opinion about Vibheehsana and he would not desert any one who approached him with friendliness even if he had several defects. Then Sugriva asked Rama what merit one could see in a man who had deserted his brother in adversity and Rama smiled on hearing it as if to say look who is talking! and told him that it is quite common among friends or close relatives to become enemies and Vibheeshana being wedded to

dharma had come to him, may be with a desire for kingdom and nothing was wrong with that. Rama then said as if to put the mind of Sugreeva at ease, that not all brothers would be like Bharatha, nor sons like Rama nor friends like Sugriva. Even then Sugreeva was not convinced out of his love and regard for Rama whose welfare he was concerned about, and said that it was not proper to accept Vibheeshana because of the high risk involved. Then Rama said that he was capable of killing all the rakshasa with the tip of his fimger and therefore was not afraid of any risk and then told him a story about two doves. A hunter caught the female dove and came under the tree where its mate was staying and the female dove told the male not to grieve over its capture but to be hospitable to the hunter who had come to their abode. The male dove made fire to give him warmth and fell itself into the fire to be his food. Rama said if a mere bird could do so much how much more he should do as a man. He also quoted the words of sage Kandu, son of sage Kanva who said that even an enemy who comes with folded hands seeking refuge should not be turned away and one who does that commits a sin. Then Rama said the words which extol him as sarangathavatsala and raised Ramayana to the status of sarangathi sastra. Rama said, Sakrdheva prapannaaya thava asmi ithi yaachathe abhayam sarvabhoothebhyo dhdhaami ethath vratham mama To one who seeks refuge in me even once, saying that I am yours, I will protect him from all beings and this is my pledge. Moreover Rama said, aanaya enam harisreshta dhattham asya abhayam mayaa vibheeshano vaa sugreeva yadhi vaa raavana svayam Bring him Sugreeva, I have already given refuge to him, whether he is vibheeshana or even Ravana himself. When Sugreeva conveyed the message to Vibheeshana he descended joyfully and prostrated before Rama saying, bhavantam sarva bhootaanaam SaraNyam SaraNam gatah parithyakthaa mayaa lankaa mithraani ca dhanaani ca bhavadh gatam hi me raajyam ca jeevitam ca sukhaani ca I seek refuge in you who is the sole refuge of all beings. I have renounced Lanka, my friends and wealth. My kingdom, life and happiness is at your disposal. Ramayana is as a whole an illustration to the charama sloka of the Gita. Hence it is called saranagthisastra or saranagathivedha, the gospel of surrender. Rama was the refuge of all beings, man, bird and beast and in the episodes of kakasura, of dhandakaranya rshis, Sugriva and Sabari etc. the doctrine of surrender is emphasized but in Vibheeshanasaranagathi it reaches the completion because it contains all the limbs of saranagathi and presents the whole nature of sartanagathi. This we shall see next along with the dharma involved in the act of Vibheeshana.

I forwarding the details as Attachment. Adiyen madurakavidasan TAK Sthalasayanam Shrihi Respected Bhagavathas, Last few days i am observing in the e-group one topic which is hurting every one of Swami Desikan Abhimanis ( Irrespective of Both Kalais **) that his Thirumalaigai at Srirangam ( The place from where he went to Join his Lord at Sri Vaikuntam) is being demoloshed and commercial complex is coming up. I wish to present you the fact. Please don t heed to any rumors. Yesterday I went to Asmath Acharyan H H Sri Rangapriya Swamis Ashram. I had taken time to meet Swami at 8.30 PM. He came from giving Discourse at Ashtanga Yoga Vijyana Mandiram and he was in Cheerful mood. I Presented him the Books brought out by Sri Vaishnavism Kainkarya Sabha, Chennai for which i am the Secretary. ( Sri Vaishnavism Kainkarya Sabha Coolected one time Life membership of Rs.1000/- or US $100 and every quarter it brings out Sri Vaishnavism books and gives Free of Cost to its Member, I will scan and upload the cover page of books brought out by the Sabha shortly.) I appeal to you all to become the member. Then I took Print out of Pearls of Wisdom and gave it to Acharya for going through it. Also Presented Acharya the Book "Yathi SarvaBhouma Manjari brought out by Sriperumbhudhur Ko. Ka. Appan RamanujaCharya Swami which contains Sri Ramnuja Ashtapathi, Sriperumbhudhur Mahatmiyam, Sri Ramnuja Suprabhatham, Swami Emperumanar Kattiyam, Nithyya Vibhuthi/Lila Vib huthi Mangalasanamas. Echarikai and Sri Ramnuja Ashtiotharasada Nama Shostra ) Then I told him once again i will start the Pearls of wisdom shortly as i could not do it due to Loukikam and for the first time I told him I faced a Huge loss in my Software Business and now i have set right the thing. He blessed me Mangalam Udakatoom Appa. I Sure with My Acharyans Krupa things will be fine. Whenever I go I also convey Swami about the Welfare of my Guru Bratha Singapore Haresh ( Presently in Mumbai). Then I told him Swami we both are upset that Swami Desikan's Thirumaligai at Srirangam will be demolished etc. For that Swami Informed that in the morning Sri Krishna Kshayap ( Kalale) from USA had called in the morning and informed him the same news and requested Swami to do something. Then Swami immediately called up H H Prakala Muut Jeer who is observing Chathumasyam in Myhsore and spoke to him about it, for that Prakala Swami informed Asmath Acharyan the following thing. 1.It is rumors and no commercial complex is going to come in that place in Srirangam. 2.Swami Desikans Thirumaligai will undergo Renovation. It will remain in same place. 3.A Veda Patashala will be added. H H Prakala Jeer Swamy feels at such a sacred place Sound of Vedaparayanam should be heard so if Patashala is started that wish will be fulfilled. 4.As such H H Parakala Mutt Jeer Swami whenever he visits Srirangam he has to depend on other Mutts / Ashram for his accommodation. So a Kutterram for Swami will be constructed, Then Hostel for Boys of Patashala and also accommodation Place for Parakala Mutt Shisyas and Sevarthis free of cost will be constructed. Asmath Acharyan told whatever we wish to contribute we can join hands for noble cause. I Appeal to Shishyas of Parakala Mutt ( Especially the People from Iyengar Bakeries ), Desika Abhimanis to Join the hands of H H Prakala Mutt Jeer in this noble cause. The Approx cost for the Project is 84 Lakhs. I also take reference to my friend Sri Sreevathsa's who cleared the air before me to give further details to people on how to participate and whom to contact etc. Hope the things are clear now. If I have commited in Apacharaam Pray excuse

Sri Rangapriya Smaranam Lakshminarasimhan Sridhar Ps: ** One day I and Haresh were listening to Swamis Bhashnama to us and in between a topic of two Kalais came. Our Acahryan is above the Kalai Bedham and he immediately retorted back I have heard of 64 Kalais and in this two Kalais ( Vadakalai or Thenkalai are not there. Truly we blessed to be his Shisyas. BALASUBRAMANIAN Velukkudi Krishnan shares his experience, Bliss, to be specific, through upanyasam. Photo: N. Sridharan Chaste delivery: Velukkudi Krishnan. People's taste may vary when it comes to small screen entertainment in the evening, with soaps and cinema topping the list. But mornings, 6-7, are generally dominated by one voice. Gruff and soothing at once, the Tamil is both chaste and familiar. The style is lucid, diction clear and the content rich. All of these makes the audience, drawing room or public halls, listen to Velukkudi Krishnan in rapt attention. His lineage My grandfather wanted at least one of his five sons to be brought up the traditional way, acquiring knowledge in Vedanta and Sastra and spreading Dharma, Krishnan traces his lineage when this writer meets him at his residence on Bheema Sena Garden Road, Royapettah, Chennai. After completing Class V, Vidwan Velukkudi Varadachariar Swamigal was trained at the patasala on Narayana Mudali Street, in George Town. He then shifted to Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, for higher education. Karapangadu Venkatacharya Swami, Tirupati Jeeyar Swami Sadhu Ramachar and Sri Rangam Desika Varadachariar Swami were his gurus. He was into Upanyasam when he was 32, thus fulfilling my grandfather's most cherished dream, says Krishnan. Bhagavad Gita and Nammazhwar's Tiruvoimozhi were close to the Senior's heart. He presented over 80 month-long lectures on Andal's Tiruppavai, with different interpretations each time. Born to his parents after sixteen years of their marital life, Krishnan got the best of both forms of education. He was trained at home in the Vedas, Divya Prabhandam, Sanskrit and other related scriptures apart from regular school. Initiation into lectures began when he was eight. He was asked to speak on the last day of a series of his father's lectures for about 10 minutes. The text prepared by his father had to be memorised. This happened throughout his school days and college days too (Vivekananda College, Mylapore, Chennai). Krishnan went on to complete C.A. and ICWA courses before joining the top rung of an MNC. Never did he venture to make solo presentations during his father's life time. A great devotee of Sri Ranganatha, Sri Varadachariar Swamigal breathed his last inside the Srirangam temple after having darshan of the deity one January morning in That marked the launch of Velukkudi Krishnan on the upanyasam scene. But he found it difficult to strike a balance between his job and lifestyle. Long hauls on business meetings outside Chennai were coming in the way of his nitya karma. Rushing to the Upanyasam stage from corporate meetings well after dusk added to the stress and the decision had to be taken. I quit lucrative job to dedicate myself to Upanyasam and related activities.

Sharing thoughts Krishnan gently shakes his head when reference is made to a change in profession. Please don't call Upanyasam my profession. It is just sharing my own experience. It is neither a trade nor a job. Experiencing the Brahman is bliss and I only want to share it with everyone. Spiritualism does not need special skill or intelligence. Nor can you achieve salvation by memorising the 4,000 verses. The Lord only expects unconditional love. Throughout his life, my father was only trying to make people understand this. If you read the works of the Acharyas, Azhwars and Nayanmars you will see that love was the underlying factor of all their immortal works. How is he able to quote from scriptures in Tamil and Sanskrit with such precision? There is no special effort besides deep involvement. Irrespective of the subject to be dealt with, he recommends at least four hours of reading authentic texts every day. I am lucky, for all I have to do is read my father's extensive notes on all the subjects. These are my invaluable assets. Response to his upanyasams? Overwhelming. Being the son of an illustrious father, the platform was ready for me but then I had the responsibility of maintaining the standards set by him. He is deeply worried about orators changing concepts to suit the trend while dealing with scriptures. For instance, using the Gita to explain management principles. The scriptures should be followed to realise the Brahman, he asserts. Krishnan's two sons are budding technocrats and he has not tried to influence them. However, he has been teaching them Sanskrit and other subjects. Velukkudi Krishnan's discourses have been digitally documented. These CDs and DVDs are also tools that help in the development of his two sons. My duty is to make them enlightened bhaktas and not trained orators. Many feel that Bhakti is for the old. On the contrary, one should attain Atma Gnanam at a very young age like Prahalada. The Bhagavad Gita is one text that should be read by everyone. Assimilating the content may be a difficult task initially, but constant reading will lead to eternal bliss. Tiruppavai too helps in fostering Gnanam. How does Krishnan preserve his energy and voice? I enjoy what I speak. It is Ananda for me. While in Ananda, the inflow of positive energy is infinite. This is true in respect of the devotees who also sit through such lectures, Krishnan concludes in typical simple style. Anu Yathra for the devotees Velukkudi Krishnan's Anu Yathras comprises a large group of devoteesthey travel along with him to places that are referred to in the Ramayana or Bhagavatam, where Upanyasam is rendered on topics relating to the respective location, followed by other sath sangh activities. The Kinchitkaram Trust (ph: ) takes care of the planning and execution of the logistics with the help of volunteers. (emal:kinchitkaram@yahoo.co.in) What is the idea behind such tours? The devotees can relate to the topics much better when they visit the places where such events happened during the Treta and Dvapara Yuga. He cites reading the chapter on Vibheeshana Saranagathi at Tirupullani as an example. Also it brings likeminded people together. Outlook towards life changes. Selflessness comes to the fore. You move closer to nature. Taking bath in rivers and temple tanks, chanting the Lord's name together and having food as a member of a large community increases the tolerance level. The Sri Rama Anu Yatra 2010 guide giving complete instructions to the travelling devotees is one of the best documentations for group tours. Tirunakshatram Kinchitkaram Trust is planning to celebrate the 1000th tirunakshtram of Sri Ramanujar in 2017 and students have already been enrolled into Sri Ramanuja Siddhantha Vidya Peetam at Srirangam. They are being trained in several aspects of the Vedas, Agamas and Sastras by pandits. At the end of the course (2017), they will be fluent in all the subjects and can pursue a spiritualistic life as a upanyasagar, teacher or archakar. COURTESY : DATED 6 th AUG 2010.

This place is called colloquially sithukadu name being Sidharkadu. It is said that a lot of Sidhars were doing penance in this area. Tirumazhisai Alwar also lived here.the main deity is Lord Sundararajan. A small and beautiful idol with ubhaya nachimars.there are seperate sannidhis for thayar and Andal. In the front mandapam of Andal sannidhi there is a pillar. In that pillar a statue of GARUDAKODI SITHAR is the main attraction for this temple.. He is sitting in rare posture having a jar (like kamandalam)in one hand and holding a creeper called garudakodi. it is the strong belief of the local people and devotees that a prayer to this Garudakodi sithar will cure all defects in the eyes. There are instances of cases where patients got back normal eyesight without operation, where dr.advised operation. This place is situated at about 5kms from Tirumazhisai. The temple is open from 8am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm. Tirumanjanam and necessary poojas are performed at the request of devotees to Gardukoti sithar. There are nearly 14 types of sri Narasimhar throughout the temple mandapam. Narasimhar in a standing posture is very attractive and graceful. I am attaching the photos of garudakodi sithar, uthsavar perumal and thayar and Narasimhar in standing posture. Samprokshanam of this temple has been done recently in I request the details of the above temple may be brought to the notice of your friends and admirers. with regards dasan S.Rajagopalan._,_. Like many other famous temples, ahobila also has a sthala - purana which gives a detailed account of the origin of the temple. Its sthala - purana forms a part of the brahmanda - purana, with 10 chapters consisiting of 1046 stanzas. The sthala - purana of simhachalam temple discusses the four important shrines dedicated to narasimha. These four are ahobila, kr^itasajncham, harapapam and simhachalam. This recounts how narasimha at ahobila, manifested Himself from a pillar to kill the demon hiranyakashipu to pieces. The kurma - purana gives an account of vishhnu tearing hiranyakashipu to pieces. This place, which is ahobila has two popular legends, for the derivation of the word ahobilam. It is stated that the devas, while witnessing the terrible aspect (ugrakala) He took on in order to tear to pieces hiranyakashipu, sang His praise as " ahobala " (Lo! The Stupendous Strength). Hence this place has come to be known as ahobalam. The devas praised Lord narasimha exclaiming His strength. The other version is that because of the great cave that is there is named ahobila. There garuda worshipped the Lord of ahobila. The sthala - purana of ahobila gives an account of the 9 forms of narasimha worshippped at ahobila. In short, the sthala - purana of the temple, which is said to be brahmanda - puranantargata (part of the brahmanda - purana) with ten chapters, describes the greatness of the xetra in the first chapter. The second chapter of the purana narrates the performance of the penance of garuda for the darshana of the Lord. The third chapter gives an account of the sacred ponds of the place. The fourth chapter furnishes an account of the 9 temples of narasimha in His 9 forms and performance of penances by brahma, bharadvaja, gobhila and bharagava - rama. The fifth chapter relates the traditional story of jaya and vijaya and their birth as hiranyaxa and hiranyakashipu respectively and the assurance given by the Lord to the gods for their protection. The sixth chapter describes, at length, the childhood of prahlada and the atrocities perpetrated against him by his father. The seventh chapter narrates the devotion of prahlada to the Lord, the incarnation of Lord narasimha and the destruction of the demon hiranyakashipu. The eight chapter mentions the sharabheshvara of shiva and his destruction by Lord narasimha. The ninth chapter states explicitly the untiring efforts of bairava for the river bhavanashini and his becoming xetrapala of the place. The last chapter clearly states that worship of the form of the Lord is the only means for attaining salvation to the common people. From the book Ahobilam Sri Narasimha Swamy Temple by Prof. R. Vasantha, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, Tirupati, 2001 The ahobila - tirtha is mentioned in the chapter describing balarama's tirtha - yatra chapter of the 10th skandha of bhagavata - purana. K.N. HARITHA GOTHRA.* Harit/Harita was one of the great kings of Suryavansha. Brahmins with Harita Gothra are the descendants of Harit The Pravara of this Gothra is Angiras, Ambarisha, Yuvanaswa. Ambarisha and Yuvanaswa were also great kings of Suryavansha and ancestors of Lord Rama. In the Vishnu Purana it is said, "The son of Ambarísha, the son of Mándhátri, was Yuvaná?wa; his son was Harita, from whom the Angirasa Háritas were descended"[1]. Sri Ramanuja was also of Harita Gothra. *2. VISWAMITHRA GOTHRA* Brahmarshi Vishvamitra is one of the most venerated rishis or sages of ancient times in India. He is also credited as the author of most of Mandala 3 of the Rigveda The story of Vishvamitra is narrated in the Balakanda of Valmiki Ramayana[1]. The Mahabharata adds that Vishvamitra's relationship with Menaka resulted in a daughter, Shakuntala whose story is narrated in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. Vishvamitra was a king in ancient India, also called Kaushika ("the descendant of Kusha"). He was a valiant warrior and the great-grandson of a great king named Kusha. The Valmiki Ramayana, prose 51 of Bala Kanda, starts the legend of Vishvamitra, Gaadhi's son is this great-saint of great resplendence, Vishvamitra. Regarding sage viswamithra not much familiar points are only told. It is taken for granted readers are familiar to viwamithra much than other sages. The Vishnu Purana and Harivamsha chapter 27 (dynasty of Amaavasu) of Mahabharatha narrates the birth of Vishwamitra. *3. Birth of Viswamithra* According to Vishnu Purana[2], kushika married a damsel belonging to Puru-kutsa dynasty and had a son by name Gadhi who had a daughter named Satyavati(not to be confused with Satyavati of Mahabharata). Satyavati was married to an old Brahman known as Richika who was foremost among the race of Bhrigu. Richika desired a son having the qualities of a Brahman, and so he gave Satyavati a sacrificial offering (charu) which he had prepared to achieve this objective. He also gave Satyavati's mother another charu to make her conceive a son with the character of a Kshatriya at her request. But Satyavati's mother privately asked Satyavati to exchange her charu with her. This resulted in Satyavati's mother giving birth to Vishvamitra, the son of a

Kshatriya Gadhi with the qualities of a Brahman; and Satyavati gave birth to Jamadagni, the father of Parasurama, a Brahman with qualities of a Kshatriya. After many trials and undergoing many austerities, Vishvamitra at last obtained the title of Brahmarishi from Vasishta himself During this time he had a daughter named Shakuntala (who appears in the Mahabharata) with Menaka, an apsara in the court of Indra. Son of Shakuntala became a great emperor. He came to be known as Emperor Bharata and it is in his name that the land of India got its name Bharat. *Menaka episode and bith of Sakunthala. * Viswamithra earlier name was Kousika. Kaushika knows that Menaka genuinely loves him, so with great sorrow he curses her just to be parted from him forever. Kaushika's love of Menaka is considered to have been intense and passionate beyond estimation. *Rambha episode.* This is brought to light to Kaushika when he angrily curses Rambha, an apsara sent by Indra to seduce Kaushika again, to become a stone for a thousand years. *Trisanku episode* When a proud King Trisanku asked his guru, Vasishta, to send him to heaven in his own body, the guru responded that the body cannot ascend to heaven. King Trisanku then asked Vasishta's seven sons to send him to heaven. The sons, outraged that Trisanku should not come to them when their father had refused, cursed him to be a chandala, or untouchable. Having taken pity on Trishanku, he willingly exhausted all the punya he gained from his tapas, to enable him to ascend to the heavens. Angered, Visvamitra used his yogic powers and ordered Trisanku to rise to heaven. Miraculously, Trisanku rose into the sky until he reached heaven, where he was pushed back down by Indra. Enraged even more by this, the powerful Visvamitra then commenced the creation of another heaven for Trisanku. Trisanku, however, did not enjoy Trisanku Svarga, he remained fixed in the sky and was transformed into a constellation. In the process of forming a new universe, Vishvamitra used up all the tapas he had gained from his austerities. Therefore after the Trisanku episode, Vishvamitra had to start his prayers again to attain the status of a Brahma Rishi, to equal Vashistha. *Harishchandra's Sacrifice( not much known).* While undertaking a penance, Kaushika helps a boy named Shunashepa who has been sold by his parents to be sacrificed at Harishchandra's yagna to please Varuna, the God of the Oceans. The king's son Rohit does not want to be the one sacrificed, as was originally promised to Varuna, so young Sunashep is being taken. A devastated and terrified Sunashepa

falls at the feet of Kaushika, who is deep in meditation, and begs for his help. Kaushika teaches secret mantras to Sunashepa. The boy sings these mantras at the ceremony, and is blessed by Indra and Varuna, and Harishchandra's ceremony is also completed. In the Indian epic Ramayana, Vishvamitra is the preceptor of Rama, prince of Ayodhya and the seventh Avatara of Vishnu, and his brother Lakshmana. There are two Gothras, or lineages, bearing the name of Visvamitra. *Visvamitra Gothra off shoots* People belonging to the Visvamitra Gothra consider Brahmarishi Visvamitra as their ancestor. There is an off-shoot of "Vishvamitra Gothra" called "Chakita Vishvamitra Gothra more likely, explanation, is that a group of descendants decided to split from the main group and started their own branch of this line. People belonging to Kaushika (Kaushik/ Kousika/Kousikasa/Koushika/Kausika) Gothra take Rajarishi Kausika as their root. Kausika was one of the names of Visvamitra.11 Royal clans of 96 clan of Marathas belong to Kaushik Gothra including the illustrious house of Shivaji and Rashtrakutas Some brahmins in South Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh also have Kaushik/Koushik as a family Gothra. Some of the kumauni region brahmin like Bhatt also belongs to Kaushik Gothra. 43 Andal Ramanuja is known as Thruppavai jeeyar in his times as he used to chant Thiruppavai during his rounds of unchavrtthi. He was so engrossed in Thiruppavai and once when he was chanting the Thiruppavai 'undhumadhakalittran,' which tells about the consort Nappinnai of Krishna, thus implying the purushakara of the divine mother, Atthuzai, the daughter of PaeriaNambi, the preceptor of Ramanuja, came out to give biksha. Ramanuja's mind was fully engaged in the meaning of the Pasuram that she appeared to him as Nappinnai herself and he fell at her feet shocking her. Ramanuja was acclaimed as the elder brother of Andal who is referred to as "perumpudhur maamunikkuppin aanaal.' Ramanuja is denoted by Perumpudhur maamuni, the great sage of Perumpudhur as he was born in Sriperumpudhur. The incident which caused this was as follows: Andal has said in her pasuram on Azagar of Thirumaaliruncholai, naarunarumpozil maaliruncholai nambikku, naan nooruthadaavil vennai vaai nerndhu paraavi vaitthen nooru thadaa niraindha akkaravasicumil sonnen ERu thirvudaiyaan inruvandhivai kollunkolo It means that she had prepared butter and sweet pongal for Azagar in 100 vessels expecting Him to come. Ramanuja, when he was discoursing on this pasuram, decided to fulfill the wish of Andal and went to ThirumaalirunchOlai and performed the ritual of offering to the Lord what she has said in her pasuram. Then he went to Srivilliputthur and Andal came out of the sanctum sanctorum calling him as elder brother, 'anna.' This is what the line "perumpudhur maamunikkuppin aanaal'' refers to. Even today people are not allowed beyond certain point till which is supposed to be the sanctum sanctorum in Srivillputthur because that is the spot where Andal came out to greet Ramanuja. Dr. SAROJA RAMANUJAM

KOTHAIYIN GEETHAI Arumbuliyur Jagannathan Rangarajan 3.Awakening and singing on Krishna As Andal woke up all her friends of different characters and they then proceeded to Sri Nandabhavanam and asked the door keeper to permit them in. Andal then elaborates awakening Krishna, Balaraman and Nappinnai from 16th to 19th pasurams and 20 to 24 is on singing glory of Krishna. Sixteenth pasuram starting as Nayaganai is said to be the center of Tiruppavai. In this Andal requests the gate keeper of the palace of Nandagopan to keep it open for their entry. She narrates the details of nonbu she did with her friends and the assurance of Krishna to grant its benefits.andal uses the word 'parai ' in pasurams 1,8. 10,16,24 to 30 and in all she claims that Krishna is sure to grant parai tharuvan.this pasuram conveys the decency of approaching great personalities only through proper channel. Also tells that praising and pure worshiping God in word, mind and action, is sure to pave way for His Grace. This thooyomai vandom thuyil elappaduvan is confirmed by Krishna. In Gita(10.9 ) mat chitha matgata pranah He says with minds fully engaged in him their lives devoted to him, conversing and enlightening one another about His glories ever remain contented and take delight in Him. In seventeenth pasuram, Andal wakes up Yasoda first, Kannan then and next Balaraman.Andal refers Nandagopalan as donor of food, clothes, water in plenty. Vamana avatharam is again mentioned in this as Ongi ulagalantha umbar koman. As said in second pasuram iyamum pichaiyum anthanaiyum kai katti, Andal continues to say on charity in this as Aram cheyyum emberuman. Andal calls yasoda as kozhunde kulavilakke and asks to embark upon worshiping the lord, to begin the same contemplating upon their preceptors and to seek their approval for the same. In Gita(17.20) Krishna says as Charity given out of duty without expectation of return at the proper time and place and to a worthy person is considered to be in the mode of goodness. In Eighteenth pasuram, Andal tells her friend Nappinnai to enjoy pleasures of righteousness, with family and friends without prejudice.nandagopan was strong as elephant in high.his strength matched that of a group of elephants, and with his great strength in his arms, he never thought to go back. When Sri Ramanujar was in Srirangam, he used to recite Tiruppavai always. When the lines Pandar virali...vandhu thiravai came near the house of his Guru Peria Nambi, his daughter Atthuzhai came and Gave Bhikshai. But in seeing her, Ramanuja became unconscious with a feeling that Nappinnai herself came before him. She told this fact to her father Peria Nambi.Peria nambi felt extremely happy as his disciple saw his daughter in the form of Nappinnai. Then this pasuram

became Ramanujar's favorite one, and so he was called as Tiruppavai jeer. Krishna says in Gita (2.31), as Killing in battlefield on religious principles and killing animals in sacrificial fire are not to be considered as a violence act. Andal thus said Krishna had strength with shoulders to face any moral struggle as Odatha thol valiyan in this. Nineteenth pasuram is just an imagination of Nappinnai and Krishna together lying on the costly couch. The pleasures referred is only suggestion by Andal that all gopis should get them in Sri Krishna's company and only for that reason Nappinnai is keeping company with Him. It is said in this pasuram, that any bed for sleeping should be cool, light, beautiful designed, good scent, and white in colour. Andal chose Nappinnai as the preceptor, and prayed to her in order to win the communion of Krishna.Andal tells Nappinnai's eyes got enlarged on seeing the beauty of Krishna as Maithadan kanninai. She made a request to Nappinnai to act as a mediator between Bakthas and God. In Gita (18.55)Krishna says that one can understand Him only by devotional service.and when he knows truly he forthwith merges into Him. Based on this, Andal felt that Nappinnai is capable of helping them to attain Krishnaanubhavam successfully. Glory of Krishna is depicted in pasuram 20 as to wake up all, 21 as to identify their arrival, 22 as to give darsan to them, 22 as to see them with grace, 23 as to analyze their request and bless, and in 24 to convey the greetings. In twentieth pasuram, muppathu moovar Amararku, 33 is taken for 8 vasus,11 Rudras 12 Adityas, and 2 Aswinikumarars.Andal says in this pasuram that a man of faith constructs something beautiful even in the midst of chaos. She asks Krishna as he has on several occasions made him free from fear from the minds of the thirty three crores of Devas and rescued them from the Asuras. But in delaying tactics His reputation only will be spoiled and they just wanted to get Him up from His bed and to grant the necessary boons. As said setrarku veppam kodukkum vimala, Krishna always rescues those who have performed Saranagathi at His lotus feet. And if the dissuade-rs are enemies, He punishes them for the offense, and if they are friends he makes them to assent the choice in taking them into his hold. Krishna says this periyay in Gita (15.15 ) as He is the source of memory, knowledge and the ratiocinate faculty, He is the only object worth knowing through vedas and the origin of vedanta. In 21st pasuram, Andal tells Krishna as Utramudaiyay as He is unshakable, not of known authorship, permanent, flawless and is an Authority by itself. Further He has a strong wish and power not to abandon those who surrender Him. She joins with all and says as Periyay for His possession of an indescribable greatness and with passion to do everything to the devotees as Ulaginil Thotramai for His incarnations as Rama, Krishna, etc, Sudare for splender gets increased every time as He is showing mercy on distressed souls. Andal is said to possess all sorts of characters of Idaiyal cowherd and concern and praises for cows, and so she says in this pasuram as pal soriyum Vallal peum pasukkal, like Kudam niraikkum vallal perum pasukkal in third pasuram. Krishna says this Gita, (7.15 ) as the people who are not willing to surrender Him as persons whose wisdom has been carried away by Maya, and are domain nature such as foolish and worthless men of evil deeds do not adore Him. In 22nd pasuram, Thingalum Adthithyanum, conveys Krishna is capable of exhibiting his talents simultaneously in most contradictory nature, like Bayakruth bayanasana in SriVishnu Sahasranamam, creating and destroying the fears. In Narasimhavatharam though Hiranyakasipu was killed in much terror, Prahlada was looking smilingly. Andal wants to nullify the evil effect of curses.andal wants the two eyes of Krishna to be seen on her and remove all curses. She had in mind that Ahalya got it through feet, Kubera through knees, Madhu kaitabha through thighs, and Durvasa through chest. Andal says many kings of various countries are waiting near his kingdom, like Arjuna and Duryodana's wait before Gurukshetra war. Similarly she is waiting with all her friends so as to reach Him as vandhu thalaippeithom.in Gita (17.3) Krishna says the faith of all men conforms to their mental disposition. Faith constitutes a man; whatever the nature of his faith, verily he is that. Andal had such a high confidence in her approach to meet Krishna. In 23 rd pasuram, Andal expresses the excellence of lion in its coming out from cave in

winter season. She compares reclining pasture of lion's appearance with that of Krishna, while coming out from His bed. The gigantic walk Simhanadai attracted Andal more than other walks such as gajanadai, sarpanadai, pulinadai, kalainadai which are still prevailing in SriRangam in oyyara nadai sevai during uthsavam days. As lion cub even at birth is the king of forests, and needs no coronation, Krishna is also great in natural form.andal calling as Poovai poo vanna, though contradict to lion's look, is also equally good and apt for Krishna. It is said Vishnu took avatars to teach a virtuous life, and to take the lives of bad, only after analyzing the facts as Araindhu arul.this has been informed in Gita (18.14 ) as "The place of action, the performer, the various senses, many kinds of endeavor, and ultimately the super soul are the factors of causes for the accomplishment of actions ".So Andal is sure that anything is done in broad analysis. In 24 th pasuram, Andal took a lead in performing Archana in Tamil and so nobody can claim Tamil archana system as of their own.she narrates Vamana Avatharam as ulagam alanthai, Rama avatharam as then ilangai setrai, Krishna avatharam in vanquishing evil Sakateswara as sakatam uthaithai, killing Kapitthasuran just by throwing calf cow into the air for Vilambazham, as kanru kunila erinthai, protecting Aayarpadi for 9 days just by holding Govardana giri in finger as kunru kudaiyai eduthai.andal says there are so many such valors Krishna does in every Avataram, and the purpose of this praises is to attain His grace only. Andal says God protects all unfailingly who seeks refuge in His feet. In Gita (7.17) Krishna says that He is extremely dear to any wise person who knows Him in reality, and He is extremely dear to Him. So it can be said all His seshtithams are only to persons who surrender Him totally. 4.Preachings and Saranagathi Andal's preachings for well being and total surrender to Sriman narayana is elaborated in concluding six pasurams. In 25th pasuram, Andal says that Krishna gave the pleasure of avatara rasa as born as the son of Devaki and on the same night by becoming the son of Yasoda he gave the pleasure of enjoying His sports in leela rasa.when asked about the requirements Gopis said that they just wanted to do service to God. Andal says Krishna as thiruthakka selvam, a divine personality to dispel all vicious influences and to bless them with all benefits.her preaching in this pasuram is one can attain more happiness and be free from all troubles by singing Krishna's glory. Periazhwar in his Thirumozhi moonram Anthathi states as Devakitan vayitril athathin patham nal. Similarly, his daughter Andal here gave puzzle as oruthi, oriravu, olithu, to solve by ourselves. Andal's praises for Krishnavatharam with two mothers is well explained in Gita (4.9 ). Krishna says here as His birth and activities are divine. He further says those who know this in reality is not reborn on leaving the body, but comes to Him. Thus it is known that Krishna has many forms and incarnations.though there are many transcendental forms, they are one and the same Sriman narayana. In 26th pasuram the word 'Maley' used by Andal may be a repetition of the previous pasuram as Nedumale and as 'Selvathirumal ' in the last one. Nedumale is the great love and affection of Vasudeva on Devaki, which caused terror in the minds of Kamsan for his cruel nature with them. ' Selva Thirumal' is on Dwaya Mantram. But here it is Krishna's excessive, boundless and unlimited loving care and affection for the soul, Maam in Charama Sloka of Gita. Andal says that there is no direct Vedic injunction, excepting the practice of doing what their ancestors has done it as Melayaar seyvanagal. Andal preaches in this as ' Age old customs, traditions and practices of our Acharyas are to be respected and observed with great care.in Gita (4.1 ) Krishna says " Immortal yoga is revealed to Vivasvan from Me,Vivaswan conveyed to Manu, Manu imparted then to Ikshvaku. Similar to this, all good habits are observed with much care in tradition. Alin ilaiyai conveys the power, glory and excellence of the Omnipotent Krishna is informed and conveys as 'Without His volition not even an atom will move'. The 27th pasuram in Tiruppavai is popular because of its attraction with sweety, tasty, sumptuous, ghee quoted, Chakkarai pongal. The lines of 'Mooda Nei peithu muzhankai vazhiyara' in Koodaravalli pasuram is of unique attraction as Andal has expressed her broadmindedness and gesture fully in Nachiar Thirumozhi 9 as Nooru thada in which she

is offering butter in 100 vessels, Akkaravadisal (the famous Ayyangar veettu Payasam of rice cooked in Milk with jaggery and ghee) in 100 vessels to Lord of Thirumalirunjolai. Andal uses the favorite name of Govinda in three pasurams continuously in pasuram 27, as Koodarai vellum seer Govinda, in 28 as Kurai onrum illatha Govinda, and in 29 as Andru kaan Govinda.Andal preaches as Lord can punish a soul for a wrong only if the the soul is not prepared to take refuge unto Him. The moment he accepts His protection, the Lord cannot punish him for his sins as padi parai kondu yam perum sanmanam.andal prays for finest fragrant silk attire, and jewels such as bangles, padagam, ear rings, choodigai, citing the instance of issue of saree to Draupadi. In Gita( 3.13 ) Lord Krishna says that the devotees are released from all kinds of sins because they eat in group offered first for sacrifice. But the people preparing food for just personal enjoyment in a lonely place verily eat sins only. So taking food with all friends and relatives is recommended both by Krishna and Andal. In 28th pasuram, andal tells Saranagathi, is otherwise observance Nonbu. As said in the very first pasuram as Narayane namakke parai tharuvan, lord Krishna is to be attained by us as padip parai kondu in 8th, and 27th, He is the means of attainment as angapparai kondu in 30th pasuram. Andal confesses that there is absolutely no omissions, mistakes or wrong things in Him. Andal says as though they know one should perform saranagathi according to one's status and without any expectation of its fruits, they are liable to commit mistakes often. She also pleads for excuse for calling Krishna in various names out of affection and love. Andal pleads for forgiving the break ness in the middle of three modes of Saranagathi Swanishte,( to do directly with full knowledge), Utkishte,(doing through Acharya's guidance),acharyanishte, (surrendering to Acharya). In Gita (8.9)Krishna asks Arjuna to think of Him at all times. Krishna claims that, He who contemplates on the all knowing, ageless being, the ruler of all, subtler than subtle, the universal sustain-er, possessing a form beyond human conception, effulgent like the sun, and far beyond the darkness of ignorance. Andal's saranagathi to such a supreme personality Paramathma is ever appreciable one. In Tiruppavai two pasurams 29 and 30 are considered as Satrumurai, Sriman narayana is both means and end in SriVaishnava sampradaya. This is stressed as Unakke naam aat seyvom in this pasuram and in previous one as Unthannai punniyam yaamudaiyom.what Periazhwar in Thiruppallandu tells as Enthai thanthai thanthai tham moothappan ezhpadi is repeated by Andal in this as ezhezh piravikkum unthannodu. Andal pleads Lord Krishna in this pasuram, for changing all desires of worldly pleasures as sincere service to god. Saranagathi in the form of early morning prayers, prostration before Thiruvadigal, doing mangalasasanam, are suggested in this pasuram. In Gita (7.19) Krishna says that He himself is the man of wisdom, and in the very last of all births the enlightened person worships Him by realizing that all this is God. Such a great soul is rare indeed. Andal has proved that statement in this verse by following Her father's words. In the concluding pasuram, Saranagathi's result of Engum Thiruvarul petru inburuga is confirmed. Any one irrespective of caste, creed, age or sex can follow Saranagathi or surrender. One can perform Saranagathi not only for himself but also for others including animals, birds, plant etc. The individual surrenders to the Lord expressing his limitations of yogic path. The process is simple with huge benefits. Resolve to do only such acts favorable to supreme God, and to avoid all actions nor favoured by the Lord. If one have full faith in the Lord that he will protect the individual. Andal says that people known to recite thirty pasurams of Thiruppavai without any errors are sure to attain benedictions of Srimannarayana and SriMahalakshmi. Vangak kadal kadaintha informs various specialties of Sriman narayana as Churning the ocean to get nectar, in vatsalya, managing individually in swamittva, working with all in sausilya, distributing nectar in saulabhya, knowledge on chun in gnana, and strength to complete in shakthi.in Gita (5.29) Krishna says that the persons knowing all sacrifices and austerities, as the supreme lord of the worlds attains peace. Andal says in similar voice that Sangathamizh malai is sure to give peace to one and all. Note. Kothaiyin Geethai is just my attempts to identify similarities in two immortal epics. 53 SRI NARASIMHA DARSHANAM BY. Sri. JEGANNAATHAN. K.S. NARASIMHA DARSHANM-6. The VishNu (Hari) dhveshi, HiraNya Kasipu has been tormenting his son, Bhaktha PrahlAdhan and subjecting him to all kinds of torture so that PrahlAdhan can reject Hari as the Supreme Being and accept him (HiraNya Kasipu) as the one superior to Hari in ParAkramam and Vaibhavam. PrahlAdhan rejected his father's foolish statements and held on resolutely that there is no one, who is equal or Superior to Hari. That statement made HiraNya Kasipu fly into rage. He asked his son as to where that Hari is hiding. PrahlAdhan replied: "Hari is everywhere". This enraged HiraNyan further; out of that blinding rage, Hiranyan hit a pillar in his darbar hall and taunted his son as to whether that Hari is in that pillar. Vaikunta KaNDeeravan (Hari in the form of Narasimham) jumped in a flash out of that pillar and used His own nails to to tear HiraNyan apart and destroyed the asuran, who had tormented His BhAgavathan, Bhaktha PrahlAdhan. This "adhbhutha Kesari" (Unique and Mysterious Lord with the head of a lion and the body of a Man). The lions leave the flesh of the elephant out in the forest, where they killed the elephants, and bring just the tusks that they pulled out. They arrive at the Sannidhi of their Lord, place the tusks before Him with utter reverence and worship

Him at this AhObila KshEthram. "ittu irainjum" refers to their own way of worship of their Lord to hail their Jaathi sambhandham. For a wild animal like the Lion, the thought that it should bring some valuable thing with respect to the Lord arises according to Kaliyan because of the Mahimai of the AhObila KshEthram. Their Bhagavath Bhakthi propels them to engage in such endearing acts. Due to Poorva Janma punyam, they are born in the forests of AhObilam and enhance their Bhakthi through kaimkaryam appropriate to their nature as wild animals. Courtesy : E-Book # 50 Ahobila Divya Desam Location : Mangalagiri, near Vijayawada. Main Deity : Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy and Panakala Swamy. Nearest Town : Vijayawada District : Guntur State : Andhra Pradesh Mangalagiri is one of the eight important Mahakshetrams (sacred places) in India. The temple of Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha swamy is situated on the hill. On the right side of the steps provided to reach the temple, there is a stone inscription by Sri Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagar and further up, the footprints of Mahaprabhu Chaithanaya are to be seen. Midway on the steps there is a temple of Sri Venkateswara Swamy. In the temple of Lord Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy, there is only the face with the mouth widely opened. Behind the temple, there is the temple of Sri Lakshmi, to the west of which there is a tunnerl, which is believed to lead to Undavali caves on the banks of the Krishna. The Lord that has established Himself on the hill is in the form of Narasimha (man-lion) which Lord Vishnu assumed to kill Hiranyakasipa, A Rakshasa father of Prahlada, a great devotee. He is also called Sudarsana Narasimhaswamy. The legend says that Namuchi, a Rakshasa after great penance obtained a boon from Brahma that he would not be killed by any thing that is either wet or dry. He began to harass Indra and the Devathas. Encouraged and supported by Lord Vishnu, Indra commenced destroying the army of Rakshasa Namuchi, who hid in a cave in Sukshmakaram giving up his stulakaram. Indra dipped Sudarsanam, the disc of Lord Vishnu in the foam of the ocean and sent it into the cave. Lord Vishnu manifesting himself at the centre of

the disc destroyed the Pranavayuvu of the Rakshasa with the fire of His exhalation. He thus got the name of Sudarsana Narasimha. The blood that flowed from the body of the Rakshasa seemed to have formed into a pool at the foot of the hill, which is known hill. The Lord said that he would be satisfied with milk in Swaparayugam, with ghee in Threthayugam and with panagam (jaggery water) in Kaliyugam. It is also believed that Lord Rama while departing for Vaikuntam after completing his mission in that incarnation advised Anjaneya to stay at Mangalagiri and after obtaining his blessings to remain in this world for ever. Anjaneya took his adobe at Mangalagiri as Kshetrapalaka. The place thus also came to be known as Mukthyadri (the hill that grant Mukthisalvation). The image of the Lord in the form of Narasimha (man-lion) and that of Lakshmidevi to His left are of stone. The garland of the Lord with 108 saligramams is of special significance here. Daksjamavartha Sankam, a special conch believed to be the one that was used by Lord Krishna and presented by the Maharaja of Tanjore is one more possession of significance of the Lord. There is also an ancient ratha (temple car) belonging to the temple with ornamental woodcarvings depicting the scenes from the great epics of Bharata, Bhagavata and Ramayana. Thimmaraju Devaraju a military chieftain of the Vijayanagara rulers improved this temple. He had constructed prakarams, mandapas, gopurams, five images of Lord Bhairava, a festival chariot, and ten varieties of courts for annual ceremonies, flower gardens, lakes and tanks. He had also installed utsava vigrahas in the temple. To the north of the temple, there is temple of Sri Rajyalakshmi to the south that of Rama with Sita and Lakshmi and to the west vahanasala. The Lakshminarayana temple and the Anjaneya Mandiram in Pedda Bazar are the other places of worship in the town.

Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Brahmothsavam is very important annual festival. It is believed that the celebration was inaugurated by Dharmaraja at the behest of Lord Krishna. Pradyumna, the son of Lord Krishna, requested his father to celebrate his brithday annually for a sapthaham from Phalguna Suddha Sapthami. Lord Krishna entrusted this work to Dharmarja. At present, the festival is celebrated for 11 days commencing from phalguna sudda shasti (February- March). The perculiarity in this temple is that jaggery water locally lnown as panakam is poured as an offering to the Lord with a conch. The jaggery water is actually poured into the mouth of the Lord as an offering. While the jaggery water is being poured into the mouth of the Lord, a gargling sound is clearly audible as if the Lord is actually drinking it and the sound becomes shriller and shriller as and when the Lord is drinking. The sound wikk come to a stop after sometimes and the balance of the jaggery water is thrown out. This phenmenon happens not once in a day but is a recurring feature during the course of the day as and when devotees offer panakam. It will be interesting to note that even a single ant is not traceable near the Lord nor around the temple in spite of the offering of so much jaggery water. As the offering of panakam to the Lord is pecuilar, the Lord here is called Panakala Narasimhaswamy. Srirama Navami, Hanumajayanthi, Narasimhajayanthi and Vaikuntha Ekadasi are celebrated here on a large scale. Courtesy Sriman Oppiliappan Koil VaradAchAri Sadagopan

Acting in tandem How often do we obey the instructions our preceptors give us? Can we answer honestly that we never waver in carrying out the instructions they give us? We cannot. But Rama was one who carried out his preceptor Vasistha's instructions, without any minor deviation, said Adur Asuri Madhavachari. Vasistha tells Rama that on a particular day He must observe ritual purity until 10 in the morning. So Rama bathes early in the morning. But just when the period prescribed by His preceptor is going to end, He has yet another bath, and then goes and prostrates at the feet of Vasistha. Vasistha asks Rama why He had had another bath. Rama replies that He followed Vasistha's instructions. But while He had been coming to meet Vasistha, the tip of Sita's sari had brushed against Him. So He had resorted to another bath. Rama did not question if the day was special in some way, and therefore warranted such observations. He merely did what His preceptor told him to. When one has faith that one's preceptor will only do what is good for one, one will not be tempted to question him. In the same way, if one has absolute faith in one's spouse, one will not question the decisions that he/she makes. It is that kind of perfect understanding that Rama and Sita had. Just as Rama had the quality of mercy in abundance, so did Sita. That is why when Rama said to Guha that His wife Sita would henceforth be Guha's friend, Sita did not object. She too had a heart full of kindness, and was fully in agreement with Her husband's view that Guha should be treated as a friend. Besides she had trust in Her husband and knew He would never make a wrong decision. Again would families not benefit if two brothers were as Rama and Lakshmana were to each other? When Rama embraces Guha, He tells Guha that henceforth Lakshmana will be Guha's brother too. Lakshmana, like Sita, accepts this decision unquestioningly. Thus in the Ramayana, we have examples of how a disciple should behave, and how the members of a family should think and act in tandem. CHENNAI, DATED 05th JULY 2010.
