1 Navarathri, sacred to Shakthi, the Mother Goddess is celebrated in the month of September / October. Nava means "nine". Since, the pooja is done for 9 days, the pooja is so called as "Navarathiri" Pooja. The Navarathri festival or nine day festival ends with the tenth day festival Vijayathashami. On all these ten days, the various forms of Mother Mahisasura-mardini (Durga) are worshipped with fervour and devotion. Tamils celebrate Navaratri in segregation of three days each for Goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi, the three manifestation Deities in the form of Shakti [Energy or Power]. The first 3 days of pooja is for Sri Durga Devi in order to destroy all evils and our impurities. The next 3 days of pooja is for Sri Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees inexhaustible wealth, as she is the goddess of wealth. The final 3 days is for Sri Saraswathi, the goddess of wisdom. To have all-round success in life, believers seek the blessings of all three aspects of the divine femininity, hence the nine nights of worship. The 10th day is Vijayatjashami, all of these 3 deities are kept together and worshiped to complete the Navarathiri pooja. Ayudha Pooja is performed on this day. Everyone ritually worship their tools of the trade - pens, machinery, books, automobiles, school work, etc. on this day and start their trade afresh. A period of introspection and purification, Navratri is traditionally an auspicious and religious time for starting new ventures. Many teachers/schools auspiciously start teaching Kindergarten children on this day. Students also pay homage to their respective teachers as they are considered the third god (Maathaa, Pitha, Guru, Daivam - Mother, Father, Teacher & God). It was on this day that Arjuna worshipped Devi, before starting the battle against the Kauravas on the field of Kurukshetra. Navarathri is a period of fasting. During this vowed religious observance, a pot of nine grains (seeds of Navathaniyam are put into a pot and watered) is installed at a sanctified place at home. A lamp is kept lit in the pot for nine days. The pot symbolizes the universe. The uninterrupted lit lamp is the medium through which we worship the effulgent Adishakti. In South India, during Navarathri dolls called Bommai kolu are placed and decorated. They are displayed to depict various stories in the epics and puranas. Gifts of coconuts, clothes and sweets are exchanged. 1 / 7
2 The legend: In Hinduism the adherents believe in one omnipresent Deity but may worship Her/Him in any of the numerous manifestations. Sri Devi Parasakthi has taken lots of Avathaars (incarnation) to destroy the evil. And, the one among them is the avathaar of Mahishasura Mardini. The great legend of Navarathri dates back to the story of Mahishasuran, the mighty demon, who worshipped Lord Shiva and obtained invincible powers. Soon, he started killing the innocent lives on the earth and set out to win the seven lokas, and acquired the swarglok. Even the three mighty Gods of the Hindu Trinity - Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva were unable to defeat him. The gods invoked Goddess and asked for her help. Goddess Parvathi is called as "Iccha Shakthi", Goddess Sri Lakshmi is referred to as "Kriya Shakthi" and Goddess Saraswathi is referred as "Gnana Shakthi." All these 3 Shakthis joined together as "Chandika Devi" to attain a common goal ie killing Mahishasuran. Devi fought with the demon and his forces for nine days and nine nights, and killed him on the evening of the tenth day, known as the Vijaya Dasami. Navarathri is the commemoration of the victory of Mother Goddess over the demon, Mahishasuran. The time in which Chandika Devi incarnated as Mageeshasura Mardhini is said to be the festival that is celebrated in Puratathi month (October - November) starting from Amavasai for 10 days. Navarathri is the greatest Hindu festival in which God is adored as Mother. Hinduism is the only religion in the world which has emphasised to such an extent the motherhood of God. One's relationship with one's mother is the dearest and the sweetest of all human relations. Hence, it is proper to look upon God as mother. Mother Goddess 'Shakthi' is the omnipotent power of the Lord or the Cosmic Energy. Without Shakthi, Shiva has no expression and without Shiva, Shakthi has no existence. The Goddess, who is the invisible divine feminine, lives both in the human male and the female. Within the human body, the Goddess' energy is called Shakti. She is the power of economy, beauty, luxury, joy, physical strength, power, fertility, and creativity. Knowledge, peace, lust, anger, greed, egoism and pride, are all Her forms. 2 / 7
3 The worship of Devi, the universal Mother, leads to the attainment of knowledge of the Self. Goddess Shakti sheds wisdom on Her devotees. The Mother's Grace is boundless. Her mercy is illimitable; Her knowledge infinite; Her power immeasurable; Her glory ineffable; and Her splendour indescribable. She gives you material prosperity as well as spiritual freedom. Approach Her with an open heart. Lay bare your heart to Her with frankness and humility. Be as simple as a child. Kill ruthlessly the enemies of egoism, cunningness, selfishness and crookedness. Make a total, unreserved, and ungrudging self-surrender to Her. Sing Her praise. Repeat Her Name. Worship Her with faith and unflinching devotion. Perform special worship on the Navaratri days. Navaratri is the most suitable occasion for doing intense spiritual practices. These nine days are very sacred to the Divine Mother.
