6 6 - CELEBRATING 115 YEARS To Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church: Our 115 th Church Anniversary theme based on Psalm 18:32-33 is: Made Strong and Made to Stand by the Power of God. This theme puts the credit for Mount Olive s continuance utterly unto the Lord. Without His steady hand to put us all here and then to effect in us the willingness to serve, the readiness to worship Him, and the steadfastness to uphold His word to the world around us, we most assuredly would have fallen and died off long ago. My heart is filled with great joy for us as a family as the Lord, our God, has demonstrated a continuing supernatural power to raise us up to places of great success in the ministry of His blessed word. With each passing day, and each milestone we pass, it is evident all around us that we are indeed blessed of Him and highly favored. As with any endeavor of great worth, we have encountered difficulties, but the Lord helped us; we ve had moments of misunderstanding, but He has caused us to find the shared goals and objectives; and we ve had moments of disappointment, but the Lord has given us reason to shout His praises. These experiences validate and affirm that we, as the people of God, are indeed made strong and are made to stand by the power of the Living God. For when we serve the Lord with open hearts and willing minds, His eternal power and glory are shed abroad upon us. Congratulations on this 115 th Church Anniversary, and let us celebrate together and pray that He will continue to use all of us in and for His eternal glory. We are to serve the next generation. Keep standing, and keep on serving!! Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen. (Jude 24-25) //signed// Rev. Michael R. Sumbry Senior Pastor

7 OUR CHURCH HISTORY 7 - CELEBRATING 115 YEARS In the early part of 1898, Mrs. Tabytha Watson and her two children moved from Gainsville, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico. They did not find a Baptist Church in the town or state, so they worshipped with the African Methodist Episcopal Church for about five months. In September, being inspired by her heavenly Father, Mrs. Watson started conducting Sunday School and prayer meetings in her home at 4th and Copper Avenue, then from these meetings a Baptist Church was organized and named Mount Olive Baptist Church. Rev. Gladden came from Colorado Springs, Colorado and joined Ms. Watson and those original members. They raised $135 to purchase a lot at 510 Lead Avenue. A white frame hall was placed on the back of the lot where church services were held. Rev. J.B. Bell from Phoenix, Arizona was called to pastor the church in Baptismal services were performed in the Rio Grande River until a pool was built in the hall. The church faithfully prayed, worshipped and studied. Eventually, the church had enough money to start building a new brick building. In 1909, the church building was finished in the front of that lot. The hall in back of the church was used as an annex. The church was incorporated with the following persons on the charter: Alexander E. Reynolds, Kent Penman, Mamie Green, Daniel Austin and John Collins. The original congregation included the Bramlett, Collins, Watson, Watts, Richard and Lott families. Brother Penman was Sunday School Superintendent, Brother Lott was choir director with his wife as organist an old pump organ had been donated. Brother D.A. Austin, John Collins, F.D. Faucett and A.J. Clayton were Deacons. Brothers Vance Green, F.D. Faucett and E.L. Carson were Trustees. In 1934, the lot at 508 Lead Avenue was purchased. A parsonage was built for a pastor to live in. The white frame hall at the back end of the church was sold. Later, a house at 512 Lead Avenue was purchased, remodeled, and converted into Sunday School rooms, rest rooms, a large dining room, and kitchen. Every Fourth of July, the church held a picnic for the children and adults at the Rio Grande Park, Witcomb Springs area or Bear Canyon area (located in the Sandia Mountains). In those early days, the transportation was by stagecoach. Everyone especially enjoyed riding the Jumbo Stagecoach line. The African Methodist Episcopal Church and Mount Olive Baptist Church enjoyed many social events together. Several Pastors were called to lead Mount Olive until in 1968, Rev. W.C. Trotter was called as Mount Olive s Pastor. In 1970, the properties at 508, 510, and 512 Lead was sold. The property at 2401 University Boulevard was purchased and ground breaking ceremonies took place the same year. The first building, the Ralph Bunche Cultural Center, was completed; and on February 17, 1977 the present sanctuary was dedicated. Mount Olive can be thankful to God for Rev. and Sister Trotter s leadership, dedication and vision in these accomplishments. The Trotters retired in In 1981, Rev. Del Phillips was called and served Mount Olive as pastor until Rev. Charles Becknell was pastor from 1988 until Rev. Lawrence W. George, from Detroit, Michigan, was pastor from 1992 until Rev. John Riley served faithfully as interim pastor from 1995 to Rev. Stephen Billingslea became Pastor in August of 1997 and served until December Rev. Michael Sumbry was called and has been serving as pastor since November In September of 2013, Mount Olive will celebrate its 115th anniversary. We must continue to Trust God for a glorious future as we move forward in prayer.

Under the leading of the Holy Spirit, Bishop Cooper has successfully transitioned the church into a ministry that disciples souls for Christ while also building leaders and meeting the holistic needs of the community. As a result of his leadership, New Hope Church has become a spiritual oasis in the desert and one of the most progressive ministries of the southwestern region and Albuquerque. Presently, Bishop Cooper serves as a Regional Bishop in the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship (FGBCF), an international fellowship of churches and ministries through the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Bahamas. Bishop Cooper oversees the Southwestern Region which includes New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma and under this auspice leads more than 100 churches. Through the FGBCF, Bishop Cooper was responsible for coordinating receipt and distribution of $1.5 million in materials, goods, and services to Louisiana residents affected by the damage and floods resulting from Hurricane Katrina. These heroic efforts also lead to Bishop Cooper receiving the organization s Unsung Hero Award. Additionally, he received the 2006 Visionary Award for having the fastest growing region in the fellowship. The award is bestowed by Presiding Bishop Morton, on the individual whose ministry most closely exemplifies the vision of the fellowship. Of his many accomplishments, Bishop Cooper considers his chief accomplishment to be leader of his home - husband to his beloved wife, Co-Pastor Nina Cooper, and his sons, David Cornelius Cooper, Jr., and Andrew Frederick Cooper.
