Saskatchewan Associates Celebrate Foundation Day by Liz Troyer On October 24th, 2017, Sister Joyce Lorentz, SSND led the Saskatchewan Associates in prayer to celebrate Foundation Day. We were delighted to have as our guest Elder Hazel Wahpooswyan of the City of Regina. Hazel spoke of her joy, gratitude and respect for family, friends and creation. Education and learning have played important and positive roles in Hazel s journey and this seemed especially appropriate given the day. We wish Hazel many years of blessings and opportunities to share her wisdom. 3 Volume, Issue Page 3 Chicago Area News Covenanting Ceremony On October 1, 2017, the Chicago area sisters and associates celebrated the first covenants of Hye-Sung Kim and Barbara Healy, the Silver Jubilee of Associate Patricia Stibich, and the recovenanting of area Associates. During the ceremony, Sister Jane Forni presented the group with a reflection about the General Chapter logo. Afterward, Pat shared her reflection on her 25 years as an SSND associate. It was a wonderful celebration of faithfulness and community. Christmas Gathering Associates and Sisters gathered December 3rd at Roosevelt Place in Chicago to discuss the new Plan of Association and to also celebrate the Christmas season. From left: New associates Hye-Sung Kim and Barbara Healy. The Chicago Area Christmas Elf (aka Karen Didier). As an icebreaker, Sister Jean Phelan provided a list of yes-orno questions that each person used to move around the room to ask the others present. This exercise helped us get to know each other better! Karen Didier led Pat Macaggnano and Marge Lawlor through the recovenanting ceremony (since they were not present at our October ceremony). Then, using the Plan of Association, Sister Jean asked questions based on the plan such as "the Chicago area has an Associate Director or a committee of five. From left: Sister Jean Phelan, Tom Stibich, and Silver Jubilarian Pat Stibich. Who is/are those people? By answering these questions, the group was able to clarify where we are with the plan at this time. Next, Pat Stibich read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" in the White Elephant Exchange. Everyone seemed to enjoy passing the gifts around the circle each time the word the was read. And no associate celebration would be complete without the sharing of tasty treats and conversation! 3
4 Page 4 AM Associate News S. Ontario Covenanting Celebration by Hermie Schuster On Saturday October 14, fifteen associates renewed their covenant at Notre Dame Convent chapel in Waterdown, Ontario. Sixteen sisters were present. Fr. Pablito Labado celebrated Mass. Associate Director Suzy Blackburn introduced the Liturgy. Sister Harriet Schnurr invited the associates to the front to renew their covenant. After we had done so Sister Harriet responded by saying that the sisters are proud to call us associates and then the sisters concluded with the Notre Dame Blessing. We then placed our signed associate covenants into the basket. Left to right: Josie Mac Rae, Cathy Heffernan, Liz Whyte, Rosie Craven, Loella Eby, Hermie Schuster, Evelyn Keenan, Pat Murphy, Nerina Murray, Audrey Kemp, Janina Piva, Lan Nguyen, Pat Keenan, Christine Oates, Suzy Blackburn amd Sister Harriet Schnurr. We all enjoyed a delightful and delicious lunch with the sisters. At 1:30p.m. we had a lovely gathering with Suzy in the Emmaus Room followed by a team meeting with Suzy present. It was a wonderful day! Florida Associates Gather to Re-covenant by Suzy Blackburn Associates and Sisters in Southeast Florida gathered to celebrate the renewal of associate covenants on Saturday, December 16, at Our Lady of Florida Retreat Center, in North Palm Beach. Sister Oliver Hudon prepared an opening Advent prayer, and Director of Associates Suzy Blackburn led the group in reflections on the theme of unity in the life and times of Mother Caroline. It was in this spirit that the sisters and associates of Florida reflected on the Plan of Association. From left to right, Marsha Burkhardt, John Pescosolido, Eva Hutton, Penny Williams, Fran Maher, Bernadette Macy, Suzy Blackburn. Sisters Carleen Cekal, Jo Ann Villademoras, Katherine Kinally, and Mary Dooley also joined the associates in the celebration. 4
5 Volume, Issue Page 5 My Dear Fellow Associates by Suzy Blackburn, Director of Associates Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, 2018 Dear Associates, May God s abundant blessings be yours in Fifteen years ago, on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, in January, 2003, I made my first covenant as an SSND associate. As I reflected today on St. Mark s account of the baptism of Jesus, I was moved by the tenderness and transcendence of that moment, a moment in which we are invited, not only to witness, but to experience the enveloping love of the Trinity. I know with certainty that I have experienced that love in the community of SSND associates. In my past six months as director of associates, I have witnessed God at work in your compassionate service to your families, communities, and to each other. I am deeply grateful. As we move into the new year, we have received an exciting mandate from the 24 th General Chapter of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. In the days and months ahead, I ask you to reflect on the words of the Directional Statement, Love Gives Everything. Let us be open to the ways in which we will surely be called to respond to the challenges of this document. Wishing you all that is good, Suzy Love Gives Everything * We, School Sisters of Notre Dame, direct our entire lives toward that oneness for which Jesus Christ was sent. At this critical turning point in the sacred history of creation and humanity, we have heard our deep desire to trust and dare (YAS, C 4). We embrace Gospel Poverty, probe its deeper meaning, and risk opening ourselves to be transformed (YAS, C 15-17; GD 19). We deepen our consciousness of who we are in relationship with the Triune God, one another, and God s amazing universe, particularly through theological reflection on the Trinity (YAS, C 12). We claim our authentic community life as a prophetic witness of unity in diversity and a service to God s people (YAS, C 7-9). We expand our understanding of interculturality and commit to develop skills for intercultural living in community and society (YAS, GD 36). We risk innovative responses as educators in a rapidly changing world impacted by globalization and technology (YAS, Prologue; C 22-24, 26). We educate, advocate, and act in collaboration with others for the dignity of life and the care of all creation (YAS, C 9, 17; GD 19). We discern as a congregation which urgent and critical global concerns we are called to address and we dare to respond boldly in unsuspected ways (YAS, C 17; GD 36-38). The Triune God impels us into the heart of the world to be women of peace, hope, and love. In the spirit of Blessed M. Theresa and Mother M. Caroline, we, the living community, continue to develop our charism according to You Are Sent (YAS, Prologue). * Blessed M. Theresa Gerhardinger, writings # 1.
