1 The Basilica of Saint Mary Minneapolis, Minnesota MISSION AND CORE VALUES WORKSHOP April 19, 2008 Guided by: In a changing, turbulent world that is unpredictable, challenging and full of possibilities Insight, Alignment and Action are your best approaches for growth, transition and change
2 Prepared by: Dennis Cheesebrow President TeamWorks International, Inc. Phone: Fax: Prepared for: Terri Ashmore Managing Director Basilica of Saint Mary 88 North 7 th Street P.O. Box Minneapolis, Minnesota Phone: Highway 61 North Suite 106 White Bear Lake, MN 55110
3 KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS The Strategic Roadmap Process leadership team participated in an engaging and energetic workshop for the assessment, discernment and development of Mission and Core Values Statements. The process provided for individual reflection as to the core reasons for leadership team members choosing to be at and provide leadership for the Basilica. In addition, reflection, discussion and discernment provided for an initial DRAFT of bth the Mission and Core Values statements using the existing statements as a starting point for affirmation and refinement. Mission Statement DRAFT 01 (Crafted by Dennis Cheesebrow from outcomes of workshop groups) The Basilica of Saint Mary, as America s first Basilica and Co-Cathedral of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis serves as a spiritual beacon for all, deeply rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are called to model the breadth and depth of our Roman Catholic Church by authentically living the Gospel message to love, through life-changing outreach and social justice, transformative faith formation, radical welcoming and intimate, magnificent liturgy and sacramental celebration. Core Values DRAFT 01 (Crafted by Dennis Cheesebrow from outcomes of workshop groups) As a community rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we profess values critical to our parish culture and character. As we strive to achieve our vision and mission, these values form the basis of our behavior and are a motivational force. Respect: Acknowledgement in word and action that all creation bears the image of God. Compassion: All we meet deserve our hospitality, love, acceptance and care as modeled by Jesus Christ Inclusion: A deliberate attempt to integrate the God-given diversity of people in the community Spirituality: The conscious communal pursuit and experience of God in all we do Honesty: The internalization of the belief that one can be candid and truthful in a very respectful way in order to move forward the mission of the Basilica. Community: The feeling of an intimate connection within parishioners the staff and the local area Stewardship: Living out our biblical call to prayer, service and gift-giving of all bestowed on us by God
4 THE GIFT OF NOT FULLY BAKING THE PIES The process of developing a Strategic Roadmap and its components of Mission, Core Values, Vision and Strategic Directions includes the constant and intentional feedback of subsequent workshops on the previous workshops. The Mission and Core Values Statements will be informed by and refined after the Vision and the Strategic Directions meetings. After the Strategic Roadmap is in DRAFT form, the staff and parish members will provide assessment and feedback which will most likely shift language and raise questions and opportunities for improvement. Not Fully Baking the Pie allows for collaboration, consultation and wisdom to form over time in a guided and thoughtful process. KEY MESSAGES Many minds together is a great resource Catholic question how do we resolve? Further definition/clarity about who we are
