1 Connecting the Gable Family Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers Alice Gable Kalush October 2011 Rewrite Started: 7/23/2017 Last Updated: 2/11/2018 This document is the first part of the Connecting the Gable Family book which is divided into chapters which are in separate files. This document is primarily about Wilhelm Gebel of Manheim township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and his wives Elizabeth Scheler and Barbara Weller and their children. It also discusses Wilhelm Gebel of Lancaster Borough. It also discusses John Gable and Elizabeth Marzall. John Gable was a Hessian soldier, who deserted during the Battle of Baton Rouge and later settled in Warwick Township, Lancaster County. It also discusses Henry Gebel of Manor Township. NEED TO ADD THIS It discusses Johann Georg Gobel who first settled in York County, Pennsylvania. Some of his children settled for a time in Lancaster County and then quickly moved to North Carolina. They changed their name to Coble soon after arriving in Pennsylvania. At this point there is inconclusive evidence that some of these branches of the Gebel/Gable family may connect to each other. 4 DISCLAIMER: Is This a House of Cards? This document is the best effort of myself and other Gable researchers to try to come up with a believable family tree. Especially in this first part of the Gable book, it is difficult to collect information about our ancestors because the available information is limited. If you feel uncomfortable about unproven family connections, please feel free to skip this first document and move on to one of the others where your branch of the Gable family is discussed with a higher level of certainty. In most cases, we've had to connect families together using wills, marriage records and birth records. Wills often list the spouse and their children, but the children's spouses names are usually only given for the girls. Marriage records often consist of nothing but the first and last names of each spouse. Birth records are the first name and last name of the child, first names of mother and father. Often the records make no mention of where the person lived. For example, Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster was keeping these records for people from several townships around Lancaster before Another problem is that names like John, Henry, William, Mary, Catherine and Elizabeth were very popular. The only reason that it's possible to come up with theories about family trees with this sketchy data is because very few people lived in Lancaster County at that time. In 1773 Manheim Township only had four pages of residents listed in the Septennial Census, but this had increased considerably by If we can narrow down a person to being in a particular township at a particular time that helps make theories possible. So by looking at the people with the same surname in the same township we can check whether all of the men with that surname are listed in a will which could identify them as brothers. But unfortunately, that doesn't mean some other person with the same surname and a matching first name hasn't appeared there and the expected sibling either isn't listed or has moved away. As we expand to looking at surrounding townships the chances of this unrelated person increase. In addition to that, if we are already in the second generation of a family, there will very likely be first cousins with the same first name nearby. If it is true that Wilhelm Gebel is the son of Wilhelm Gebel and Eva Elisabeth these cousins are probably present during the generation of Wilhelm Gebel and Elizabeth/Barbara Weller. We can't use age to distinguish between people because the records before 1800 are really only distinguishing children from adults. Now suppose we have a marriage record for John and Elizabeth Gebel and a birth record where the parents are John and Elizabeth Gebel. At this point, we're assuming that as long as we don't know of a second John and Elizabeth Gebel in the same generation in Lancaster County we can start building a family group sheet based on the marriage and birth information. However, it's clear from comparing wills with birth records that there are a lot of adults for whom no known birth record has been found. That could mean that they were born elsewhere, Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 4

5 no birth/baptism record has been made, the birth/baptism record has been lost or that it is an unrelated person with the same name. While building this house of cards, every attempt has been made to show what we do know and what we don't. Some key transitional points in this process are discussed in the Introduction, but you'll want to look at the more detailed information later in the document to decide for yourself if you agree with each relationship that might be in dispute. Here are some key places that an error may have been made in the family tree: 1) Assuming that Wilhelm Gebel of Lancaster Borough is the father of Wilhelm Gebel (1) of Manheim Township. 2) For each of the children of Wilhelm Gebel and his wives Elizabeth Scheler/Barbara Weller, assuming that the person (and their spouse) we have identified as matching each child actually is that child (and thus an existing tree linked to that individual are actually his or her descendants). Please feel free to tell us what you think about our decisions. Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 5

6 Introduction The families of my parents Ruth Musser Kraiss and Charles Marvin Gable visited each other multiple times during their childhood even though my mother lived in Mountville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and my dad lived in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, a distance of 350 miles. They suspected that the two families were related to each other but weren t sure how. My mother s great grandmother Elizabeth Gable Klugh had died a decade before my parents were born in 1918 and had lived in Mountville with my mother s grandmother Barbara Klugh Musser Shindle and her second husband Michael G. 8 Between 1975 and 1995 my mother did extensive research on the Gable family. On her side of the family she found a birth fraktur for her great grandmother Elizabeth Gebel born in 1822 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This document is handwritten in German and listed her parents as Jacob Gebel and Elizabeth Hambright. She consulted Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster and obtained an impressive list of Gebel births and marriages. 9 On my Dad s side of the family using Gable family records and using the Koppes book 2 she was able to trace by Dad s family back to Benjamin Gable and Anna Koppes. She also found the Medina County Cemeteries book 3 which included Benjamin Gable and his second wife s Margaret Overholt Nash Gable s graves. Located in the same area is the grave of Polly Gable, designated as Benjamin s unmarried sister. In my father's parents photo album is a photo from 1910 which includes members of the families of Benjamin's sons John, Samuel and David. Descendants of Benjamin Gable David and Mary Gable with other descendants of Benjamin Gable circa 1910 New Year's Day on E 86th Street (home of David Gable) Back Row: Meta Gable Hale,?, Laura Gable Lance, Edith Goehner, Hazel Ruth (Gable) Middle Row: Mary Rohrer, Mary Rickert Gable, David Gable, John Gable Front Row: children probably Mildred and Vernon Goehner based on ages, Fred Goehner. Metta and Laura were daughters of David's brother Samuel Gable and Emeline Leatherman. Mary Gable Rohrer and Edith Gable Goehner were daughters of David's brother John Gable and Sarah Campbell She wrote extensive letters, researched census records and church records and contacted every suspected relative she could find. She collected an impressive amount of data about both sides of the family. One of the relatives Mama contacted was George Gable, a descendant of John Gable (Benjamin Gable s son) and Sarah Campbell. I got back in touch with George in 2017 when I had my DNA tested. His sister Denise was one of my highest matches. George had a collection of letters saved by John Gable between family members near River Styx in Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio and Mountville and Millersville, 2 C. W. 10 Pennsylvania. The letters were written between 1860 and 1895 between various descendants of the three Ohio Gables (Polly, Benjamin and Henry) and descendants of Jacob Gable. Catherine Gable Prowant and her husband weren t mentioned in the letters. In my dad's parents family photo album (Charles and Hazel Gable) I found a picture of John Gable visiting with the Mountville relatives in Mountville taken about 1925 which includes both of my parents (see the photo at the beginning of this Introduction). My mother was disappointed that she never was able to find a common ancestor for the two branches of the Gable family. In 2011 I first got in contact with Jean Sears, who is a descendant of my ancestor Benjamin Gable's brother Henry Gable and Lydia Baer. Jean had lots of terrific new information. The biggest piece of news was that she had found a property sale between John Gable and Henry Gable and John Gable and Benjamin Gable in 1838 in Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. There was an earlier transaction in 1831, 1834 when John Gable bought the same property which was witnessed by Christian Browand. Jean had managed to trace John Gable back to 1800 in Manheim Township, Lancaster County. These documents also mentioned John's wife Elizabeth. A little later that year I got in touch with Lowell Weller, who is a descendant of John Gable's daughter Catherine and I found out that Catherine was the wife of Christian Browand / Prowant. This news connected John Gable to the three siblings who moved to Ohio. At this point I felt that a connection with John Gable and the four Ohio siblings was believable even though none of his children had birth records and nothing actually said that he was their father. The situation between John and Jacob Gable was much less clear. No document existed that connected them. The 1820 census had John and John Gebel Jr. in Manheim Township. Jacob Gebel (born in 1793) first appeared in the 1830 Census in Manheim Township. It is unclear whether John Jr. and Jacob are one person or two people. The ongoing connection between the two branches of the family made a connection seem very likely. We had not been able to find any kind of birth or death record for John Sr. and based on the 1800 and 1840 census records had guessed that he was born between l Also in 2011 I was in contact with Tom McKenna, who first brought up the possibility of Wilhelm Gebel and Barbara Weller being the parents of John Gable. At the time we only knew Wilhelm lived in Lancaster County which made it a possibility but I had a list of five or six other possible Lancaster County couples with sons named John or Johann born in the time period we'd guessed at. Early in the summer of 2017 I was doing some revolutionary war research for George Hambright, who is the father of Jacob Gable's wife Elizabeth. I found a 1779 Effective Supply Tax record for Manheim Township and happened to notice Wilhelm Gebel very close to George Hambright in the alphabetical list. Then on the same day I found a transcription of Wilhelm's 1810 will on Ancestry and also received a copy of the will from Beth Foreman Wells, one of the people who had good looking trees for Wilhelm's descendants that I'd recently contacted. Beth is descended from Wilhelm's daughter Esther, wife of Franz Fuhrman (Foreman). Wilhelm's will lists a Johannes and a John Gebel and says that Johannes lives in Manheim Township in Later in the probate records the clerk refers to him as John Gable. I found other Pennsylvania Septennial Census and Tax and Exoneration records from between 1773 and The only Gebels listed in these records are Wilhelm, Henry, John and Valentine Gebel which are the first three sons listed in Wilhelm's will. 11 I found out in 2017 that Lowell Weller is also a descendant of John Weller (father of Wilhelm Gebel's wife Barbara) through Barbara's brother Daniel. He helped me with some details about how the Gebel family connected to the Weller family tree using the Weller Notebook. After more research I've concluded in 2017 that Wilhelm Gebel had two wives and that Barbara Weller was not the mother of my ancestor John Gable. The best candidate for John Gable's mother is Elizabeth Scheler who married William Gebel in 1759 and had two sons Heinrich in 1760 and Johannes in Barbara Weller was the mother of Esther Gebel Foreman and Martin Gaebel. This is when I realized I had a viable theory and started to recontact my earlier Gable research heroes. Lowell Weller, ed back with news about the 1769 John Penn agreement between John Weller's widow Albertina and the 1780 land sale from the Weller family to the Gebel family. (see page ). One final piece of news from the DNA testing was multiple matches to Wilhelm Gebel's son Martin (5 Dec Apr 1837, wife Catharine), who was buried in Warwick Township, Lancaster County. In August 2017, while searching the early census record for Valentine Gable, I discovered that he, his brother Henry, and their sister Mary Adams were living together in Upper Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Henry and Valentine later moved to Perry County, Pennsylvania as described in the book A History of the Gable family. This book tells a moving story about a 9 year old boy who stowed away on a ship and made his way to Lancaster county. It's sounds like this boy may have been Wilhelm. There's more about that in the A Nine Year Old Stowaway! chapter. If you know one of their descendants that had their Ancestry DNA done, please let me know. Also, in August 2017, Ed Wevodau, author of various genealogy books specializing in trying to connect early Pennsylvania settlers to their German roots, pointed out that Wilhelm Gebel might be the son of Wilhelm Gebel (wife Eva Elisabeth), though probably from a different mother. Wilhelm is listed as the eldest son in the will and the timing seems correct. Wilhelm and Eva Elisabeth lived in Lancaster Borough. I've seen a pattern with other Lancaster County ancestors of spreading out from Lancaster in later generations so it makes sense that Wilhelm settled in nearby Manheim Township. Later in August 2017, I discovered Johann Georg Göbel, who found along with Wilhelm Gebel and Eva Elisabeth in early Trinity Lutheran Church records (but not actually sponsoring each other's children). I don't know the relationship between Wilhelm and Johann Georg, but there does appear to be a relationship. Johann Georg's branch of the family changed their name to Coble. Another connection is that there was a Jacob Coble living next door to John Weller, accounting for how Wilhelm Gebel knew Barbara Weller well enough to marry her in Johann Georg came from Hoffenheim which is a village in the municipality of Sinsheim in Baden-Wuerttemburg. Other researchers have traced the Göbel/Kobel family tree back to Hans Kobel born in 1436 in Oberdorf, Bavaria by way of Nordlingen, Bavaria. The family trees didn't include Wilhelm Gebel, but it sounds possible to find birth records for him in Hoffenheim. In January 2018, I discovered a new connection between the Gable family and the Weller family. I already had the connection between Wilhelm Gebel and his wife Barbara Weller. Charles Klugh, who married Elizabeth Gable, is a descendant of Anna Gertrude Weller. She is a granddaughter of Barbara Weller's uncle. Both this branch of the Weller family and Elizabeth Gable's parents Jacob Gable ( ) and Elizabeth Hambright ( ) lived in East Hempfield township. Elizabeth is my mother's ancestor. Wilhelm Gebel is my father's ancestor, but not Barbara Weller, since he's descended from Wilhelm Gebel's first wife. Also in January 2018, I discovered another link between the Schlissler/Shisler and Gable families. We already knew that Wilhelm Gebel's son Abraham married Susanna Schlissler. It turns out that Henry Gebel and Maria Bauman's daughter Mary Gable married David Shisler. It turns out that both Susanna and David are children of Conrad Schlissler and Anna Long. Both the Schlissler and the Long families were from Manheim township. Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 11

12 DNA Testing About Ancestry DNA testing and How to Find Your Gable matches there: I had my DNA tested at Ancestry in June This is autosomal DNA testing. If you're interested in seeing whether you have a DNA match with me along your Gable family line, I recommend you get in touch with me for some pointers on how to use Ancestry to check this. If what I say below is too confusing, feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to help you (kalush@msu.edu, ). I've written a How To Document explaining what I've found out about how to locate difficult to find matches using Ancestry DNA. Please Share Your Gable DNA Matches: Finally, I can only see the Gable matches that you share with me. I can't see any other Gable matches that you share with others. Usually we will have some Gable matches in common and some we don't share. Knowing who these people are (member name, tree name) can help us gather information about the Gable family. I'm compiling a spreadsheet of these matches, which I can share with others. It'll be more useful to other Gable researchers if more of you contribute to it. On the next page is a list of my matches. I am a descendant of Wilhelm Gebel's son Johannes Gebel/John Gable b on my father's side and of Jacob Gable ( ) and Elizabeth Hambright on my mother's side. 14 Areas of this Document Where I'm Looking For More Proof DNA matches to descendants of any of the children of Wilhelm Gebel would be helpful. Any additional information you have gathered about your branch of the Gebel/Gable family especially before 1850 would be helpful. 1. A stronger DNA match to Wilhelm's sons Henry or Valentine Gable of Perry County, Pennsylvania would be helpful. I'd also be interested in whether anyone else has heard a similar story. See the A Nine Year Old Stowaway chapter for details. I'd also like to know if anyone else has heard this story from relatives. 2. A stronger DNA match to Hans Adam Schreiner (Shreiner) who I believe is the father of Wilhelm's wife Elizabeth Scheler would be helpful. has information about him and his early descendants. He may be the grandfather of about half of Wilhelm's children. 3. I'm also curious if anyone else has heard the story about Revolutionary War Gables from relatives. See the Revolutionary War Gables section for details. I have doubts that this story is actually about our branch of the Gable family. 4. Wilhelm, Henry, Johannes, Valentine and Daniel may have had Revolutionary War service as well as the husbands of Wilhelm's older daughters. I'd like to hear about that. 5. Can we find out who has the Johann Gebel bible published by John Baer in 1819? There's more about this in the Can We Find The Johann Gebel Bible? section. 16 Wilhelm Gebel of Lancaster Borough Wilhelm Gebel and his wife Eva Elisabeth lived in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We know from his will which he signed on March 17, 1785 while "old and weak in body". The will was probated on May 8, According to Wright's book 4, he died about April 22, 1786 and was 81 years, 6 months and 24 days old placing his birth in His will names many of his children, but there are more children listed in Trinity Lutheran Church records which were probably deceased at the time that the will was written. Eva Elisabeth was the executrix of his will. His will begins by saying he's a taylor (which is an early form of the word tailor, i.e. he made specially fitted clothing). It is possible that Wilhelm had an earlier wife, who was the mother of his oldest son Wilhelm and some of his older children. It is also possible that his son Wilhelm is our Wilhelm Gebel of Manheim township. Wilhelm left two pounds to "the children of his deceased son John Gebel in his will". He also gave two pounds each to his children William, Henry, Martin, Elizabeth, wife of Christian Gettich. The will states that William is his oldest son. He left "his son Jacob Gebel the South Westerly Moiety (or half part) of my lot of ground whereon I now live and (right to well of water in other moiety for him and his heirs)" He left "wife Eva Elisabeth Northeasterly Moiety of half part of said lot together with the dwelling house and buildings thereon and right to the well I give unto my wife Eva Elizabeth and said Daughter Ann Mary to hold during their natural lives." After both of their death, northeastern moiety and buildings were to go to son Jacob Gebel. The research on Wilhelm's other children hasn't really started yet, but I did find out that Wilhelm's grandson Jacob Gable (son of Jacob), a well-known tinsmith and coppersmith, who carried on business on the present site of the Union Trust Company. 5 The grandson's descendants owned land in the Gable Park neighborhood of Lancaster. 6 Also, in the list of early Gable baptisms that my mother received from Trinity Lutheran Church, Wilhelm and Eva Elisabeth acted as sponsor for girls named Eva Elisabeth from three different families. One or more of these might be a close relative of Eva Elisabeth. Also, unless this naming pattern is based a person that influenced naming patterns like Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi caused boys to be named Luke and Ben in the late seventies, Eva Elisabeth could be the name of a Eva Elisabeth's mother or grandmother. In fact, Johann Georg Göbel is probably closely related to Wilhelm, possibly a brother. There's the birth information: Eva Elisabetha Quickel born June 19, 1747 bapt: Sept 7, 1747 parents: Johann Georg & Anna Ursula sponsors: William Gebel & his wife Eva Elisabetha Quickel born: Oct 26, 1748 bapt: Nov 27, 1748 parents: Johann Georg & Anna Ursula sponsors: William Goebel & Eva Elisabetha, his wife Eva Elisabet Würtz born: Aug 20, 1754 bapt: Aug 23, 1754 parents: Ludwig & Elizabet sponsors: Wilhelm Göbel, Eva Elisabet, wife Eva Elisabet König born: Nov. 23, 1764 bapt: Nov 26, 1764 parents: Christian & Elisab. sponsors: Wilhelm Göbel, Elisabet, wife 4 Lancaster County Church Records of the 18th Century, Volume 2: FirstReformed KB, Lancaster, Wright, F. 21 1. Wilhelm Gebel and His Wives According to a story from the descendants of his sons Henry and Valentine, Wilhelm Gebel stowed away on a ship in 1750 at the age of 9 to come to America from Germany. After arriving he made his way to Manheim Township, Lancaster County and found work there with the local farmers. The first record of Wilhelm Gebel in Lancaster county is his marriage in Tax and septennial census records exist of him in Manheim Township from 1773 until his death in His family originates from Germany, but we don't know where he was born. He married twice assuming that both marriages are the same man. The first time in 1759 to Elizabeth Scheler and the second time in 1770 to Barbara Weller, daughter of John Henry Weller (there's more about him in the next section) and Albertina. He died in I've come to the conclusion that Wilhelm Gebel was a pretty amazing man. First, the difficult journey to America at a very young age. Next, he marries two women whose fathers were influential in the community where he lived. He and his wives raise 13 children to adulthood. This was all while working on his nine acre farm and probably helping the neighboring farmers that his children married. I strongly recommend that you take time to read the section about Manheim Township in History of Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, by Franklin Ellis and Samuel Evans, 1883, pages (see a link to read it in the footnote). 7 It provides much information about the early history of Manheim Township and of the families allied with the Gebel family. You will see Wilhelm Gebel mentioned there too. A quote from the book about this in 1883: "The people of Manheim being so near the city can easily visit it, and they do so frequently. To this reason is doubtless attributable the fact that the township contains very few and small churches, with the exception of those which belong to the Mennonites and the Dunkers." I'm assuming that Wilhelm listed his children in order of age within each sex in his will (see above). His son Johannes (John in the list) appears in a 1786 Manheim Township tax record making him born in 1765 or earlier. It is generally believed that Wilhelm was the father of Barbara Weller's children, who he married in This makes it unlikely that she is John's mother. There are two other known records of marriages between a William or Wilhelm Gebel in Lancaster county. The first is for Wilhelm Gebel and Eva Elisabetha who lived in Lancaster Borough. He died in 1786 and there's a will that documents his wife and children. This leaves the other record of Wilhelm Gebel marrying Elizabeth Scheler in This comes from First Reformed Church of Lancaster records. 8 Note that it is unclear for some of the children which of Wilhelm's wives is their mother because no records exist of their birth. Another argument for ruling out other Gebel couples is that until about 1800 there are no Gebel (or variations on spelling) in Manheim Township that aren't listed in Wilhelm's will. I would assume that at least a few of these children were born to Barbara Weller between 1770 and 1774 but probably not all of them. Catharine and Valentine are the most likely candidates for being Elizabeth Scheler's children. 24 I am researching the possiblility that Elizabeth Scheler is a daughter of Hans Adam Schreiner. It is possible that a transcription error occurred. The Scheler family does not appear in any of the early census or tax records in Manheim Township. Hans Adam Schreiner purchased 280 acres of land along a small branch of Conestoga Creek from the sons of William Penn in Hans Adam Schryner was born in Germany in 1686, and came to America in The original homestead was located south of the present farm (across Oregon Pike), and it is believed that Hans' heir, Michael, constructed the present day farm house, according to Mrs. Elizabeth Shreiner, the current owner. Hans Adam had sons Michael, Martin and Philip. His son Philip received the homestead upon Hans Adam's death. The Shreiner farm is a national historical site. 9 Shreiner, who was from Germany, came to the township in 1729, and located on the ffarm now owned by Henry B. Shreiner and John Grosh. He also had land north of Neffsville, now owned by Christian Brubaker, David Stoner, and others. The farm first mentioned, or at least two hundred and eighty acres of it, was inherited by his son Philip, who had two sons, Martin and MIchael, the former of whom removed to Lancaster City, where he became prominent. The latter remained in Manheim, and was the father of Squire Henry Shreiner,..., and a justice of the peace. 10 In Biographical Annal for Henry Shreiner 11 : Adam Shreiner, the progenitor of the family, came from Germany about 1730 and settled in Manheim township, Lancaster Co., Pa., the homestead being still in possession of his descendants. His children were Michael, Martin, Philip, and Valentine. Philip succeeded to the homestead property, and died in Philip's wife, Eve Catherine, bore him the following children: Michael ( ); Martin ( ), was a clock-maker in Lancaster; Philip Adam, a farmer in York County; Anna Maria, wife of Henry Zehmer, of Lancaster; Margaret, wife of Frederick Hoffman, of Manor township; and Catherine, wife of Nicholas Hess, of Lancaster County. more... It's also important to realize just how close to the center of downtown Lancaster this is. Downtown Lancaster is only about five miles from the Schreiner farm and another three miles to the northern border of Manheim township. ttp:// The life and times of Hans Adam Shreiner, by David L. 25 The Shreiner farm gives us an easily found reference point on both modern and historical maps of the approximate area where Wilhelm Gebel and his family lived. If you do Google Earth on 100 Suncrest Rd, Lancaster, PA, you will be at the corner of Oregon Pike and Suncrest Rd ( N W). Move a little east on Oregon Pike and you will see a green patch in the brown. This is the Shreiner farm. You can zoom in and see the buildings there. On the next page is a portion of the 1842 Scott map of Lancaster County. I've added an arrow that points to the Shreiner farm on that map. By looking at this map it becomes obvious that the Gebel family most likely lived in the extreme northeast corner of Manheim Township (the lighter brown on the map). This area of Manheim Township borders on Warwick Township where Wilhelm's son Martin moved later and also on West Earl and Upper Leacock Townships. The borders of all four townships are only a few miles apart and the distance from the Shreiner farm to Millport in Warwick Township where Wilhelm's son Martin is buried is only 5 miles away. 27 I explored the Warrant Maps 13 for the original land grants in this section of the four counties and found the following: John Long (related to Wilhelm's neighbor Benjamin Long), Jacob Bear (Lydia Baer married Wilhelm's grandson Henry) along the north border of Manheim Township. Hans Adam Schreiner and just north of him another section of land belonging to John Long. Michael Baughman (possibly related to Maria Bauman who married Wilhelm's son Henry) is northwest of Hans Adam Schreiner. Frederick Iechelberger (probably related to Eichelberger family which married into the family of Wilhelm's son Martin) is southwest of Hans Adam Schreiner. John Johnson (whose descendant married Wilhelm's daughter Catharina, not shown) is just over the border in West Earl Township a little east of the property of Christopher Franciscus. 37 Provenance: John Penn ( ), Colonial Governor of Pennsylvania, was born in London, a grandson of William Penn, founder of the colony. He was the last proprietary official of the colony, and was under the domination of the Penn family in his two admini, as Lt. Governor and as Governor. During that time Pennsylvania was torn by a bitter struggle between those who favored proprietary government and those who sought to end it. Penn lost power when the proprietary government was displaced in 1776, during the American Revolution. He yielded to the course of events, however, and remained in Philadelphia until his death. 41 Another Gable / Weller Connection It turns out there is another connection between the Gebel/Gable family and the Weller family. 1-Johannes Daniel Weller b. 11 Aug 1677, Girkhausen, Siegen-Wittgen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, c. 19 Aug 1677, Evangelisch, Girkhausen Arnsberg, Westfalen, Prussia, d. 29 Nov 1761, Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania +Anna Maria Spiessen b. 2 Dec 1679, Diedenshausen, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, c. 28 Dec 1679, Evangelisch, Girkhausen Arnsberg, Westfalen, Prussia, m. 26 Nov 1705, Arnsberg, Eichstatt, Bayern, Germany, d. 1 Dec 1754, Girkhausen, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany --2-Joseph Henry Weller b. 1690, Wurttemberg, Germany, d. 1757, Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylania +Anna Barbara Pfautz b. 1702, Rohrbach, Sensheim, Wurtternburg, Germany, m. 1718, Wurttemberg, Germany, d. 1757, Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania --3-John Ludwig Weller b. 1718, Wurttemberger Hof, Schwabish Hall, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, d. 1767, Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylania +Anna Barbara Cornenberg b. 42 Johann Georg Göbel I'm not sure what the relationship is between Johann Georg Göbel and Wilhelm Göbel, but it seems for a few reasons that there is a connection. The reason is these early birth records from Trinity Lutheran Church. Note that Wilhelm Gebel and Georg Gobel didn't actually serve as sponsors for each other. The three records shown below are the earliest Gable family records found there. The second is that it explains how Barbara Weller knew Wilhelm Gebel well enough to marry him in A nearby neighbor of him was Jacob Coble. You can see his tract on the warrant map for Barbara's father John Weller earlier in this document. At first I thought this was a transcription error, but apparently this branch of the Göbel family quickly shifted to spelling their name Coble or Cobel. This would also be consistent with the Kobel spelling found in the records in Hoffenheim. The third is that descendants of Wilhelm Gebel (1) 's son Henry Gable were telling a story in a book published in 1902 that a 9 year old boy stowed away on a ship from Germany and made his way to Lancaster. They thought the boy might have been named George Gable. Johann Georg Gobel's father was named Johann Georg and so was his great grandfather. This would make it likely that family stories of these men's ancestors would include an ancestor named George. When a child is named Johann Georg, the Johann is a saints name, the child would have actually been called Georg. The stowaway child could not have been Johann Georg because there is a ships record of him (Hans Jerg Gobel) and his family immigrating on the Hope in The fact that Johann Georg Göbel and his children moved to North Carolina also serves to explain why Benjamin Gable (son of Wilhelm, Wilhelm, John) married Anna Koppes in Ohio, whose family was from the Carolinas. The other families they lived with in Ohio had immigrated together from other areas in Pennsylvania and the Gable and Koppes families seemed to be the odd ones out. Researchers have linked Johann Georg Göbel to Hoffenheim, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany and have traced the Göbel/Kobel family back to Hans Kobel born in 1436 in Bavaria. 50 Revolutionary War Gables There is a story about Gable brothers coming from Germany to fight in the Revolutionary war. My sister Martha Gable included this story in her 1970s paper 'The Gable Family in America' in which she interviewed our father's mother Hazel Gable. I found two 1947 letters from Hazel Gable to my mother (Ruth Kraiss) about meeting a John Gable near the cemetery where Benjamin Gable's wife Anna Koppes Gable was buried in Wayne County, Ohio. This man was apparently the source of the story on the next page which is explained below. I have found no connection to this branch of the Gable family. In a July 9, 1947 letter from Hazel Gable to my mother's mother, she talks about traveling down to Wayne County a second time, this time picking up Uriah Gable and his wife along the way. Mary Gable Rohrer (husband Glen Lester Rohrer), daughter of Benjamin Gable's grandson Uriah Gable and Zulemma Anderson, also mentions a couple of times in 1970s letters "I remember him (her father) telling (us) his ancestors were Hessian soldiers hired by the British for a nickel a day to fight in the Revolutionary war." Kim Rendfield tells a similar version of the story on her website 22. She is a descendant of John Gable and Elizabeth Marzall. "There are variations in what happens next. He was shipped across the Atlantic by himself, or he was one of three brothers who deserted, or he was one of seven brothers who split up to fight for the Americans." Douglas W. Baldwin says that his grandfather Richard S. Gable ( ) also often told the Hessian soldier story. Richard is a descendant of William Gable and Catherine Klugh and lived in Harrisburg, PA. Explanation of the letter and its story: The first cemetery visited was Maple Hill Mennonite Cemetery where Benjamin Gable and second wife Margaret Overholt Nash Gable are buried. Benjamin Gable was the grandson of Wilhelm Gebel, son of John Gebel. The second cemetery is Eight Square Cemetery, the grandmother buried there was Benjamin Gable's first wife Anna Koppes Gable. How I tracked the storyteller (John Gable)'s ancestors: Eight Square Cemetery is located near Lattasburg, Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio. There is now a John I. Gable (b. 24 Aug 1883 d. 7 Jul 1972 with wife Elmira Martin ( )) buried there. According to the 1940 Census John I. Gable lived in Chester Township. Also, buried in the cemetery and listed on Find A Grave as John I. Gable's father is Henry Peter Gable b. 8 Jan 1859, PA, d. 9 Dec 1923, Chester Twp, Wayne Co., OH, bur. Eight Square Cemetery, Wayne Co., OH and wife Catherine Imhoff ( ). According to the 1940 Census there was a John I. Gable with wife Elmira who lived in Chester Township. The 1870 census lists Henry P. Gable, age 11 as the son of Solomon Gable, age 45 and Christianne, age 30 in Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Solomon was the son of John Gable and Mary Lutz according to Solomon's death certificate. In Biographical Annals of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania (see below), J. H. Beers, 1904, there's an entry about the Gable family. Our storyteller was talking about the (2) John Gable discussed there. It traces John's descendants down to Solomon Gable and William Henry Gable (bolded below) that the storyteller talked about. Unrelated details in the story: This letter was written from my father's mother Hazel Gable (husband Charlie) to my mother Ruth Kraiss Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 50

51 My father (Charles Gable) lived in Cleveland, Ohio. My mother lived in Mountville, PA. Clarence Gable, a Mountville relative, was the grandson of William Gable and Catherine Klugh. William was the brother of Elizabeth Gable Klugh, my mother's great grandmother. I've found nothing to indicate that Clark Gable is related to my family. Details from the second letter. Cora Brenneman Imhoff is descended from Henry Gable and Lydia Baer. Henry is the grandson of Wilhelm Gebel. John I. Gable is descended from the Imhoff family. Ury (Uriah Gable) is the grandson of Benjamin Gable. John Gable and Elizabeth Marzall 23 There will be more discussion of this couple in the Revolutionary War Gables section. This was the Gable ancestor that I determined the storyteller was descended from. I excluded them because there was no record that they ever lived in Manheim Township. Based on their age, I thought this couple might be my John Gable and wife Elizabeth who moved to Ohio but was able to rule them out because they never moved to Ohio. John Gable, born 1756 and wife Elizabeth Marzall, married in 1789, set up their household in Mt. Joy (Mt. Joy Township) in 1790 and in 1795 moved to Sporting Hill, Rapho Township, Lancaster county where he worked at a weaver's trade. In 1803 he moved to Warwick township, he died Children, Maria, born Aug. 17, 1790, married Rev. H. Scriba of Manheim, PA.; John III; Other two not mentioned. Prior to his marriage he was in Lebanon County, PA. 23 FamilyTree for John Gable and Elizabeth Martzall (Curt Sanders): Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 51

53 Excerpt from July 9, 1947 Letter from Hazel Gable to Mabel Musser Kraiss, Ruth Kraiss' mother: "As I wrote to Ruth, we have been having a lot of fun looking up our ancestors, or rather your ancestors. I told you about finding a family of Gables down in Wayne County, and a week ago we drove down again, stopping for Ury Gable and his wife on the way down. It has been so long since we have seen Ury that we hardly knew each other. I think they enjoyed the trip very much. We couldn't trace the relationship with this John Gable, but since we had been down there, he had traced our relationship with a Mrs. Imhoff, who had been Cora Brenneman, a sister of Ida Brenneman. This Ida Brenneman was a missionary in Africa, I think and I think your mother knew her, and maybe you remember her, too. They are second cousins of Charlie's, their grandfathers were brothers. Ury says he remembers his father speaking of your grandmother as Aunt Eliza. An uncle of this John Gable down in Wayne county says he knew Mr. Shindle, did business with him. We'll have to get together and go into it further." Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 53

54 From Biographical Annals of Lebanon County, J. H. Beers, 1904, pages : GABLE. The Gable family, which is worthily represented in Heidelberg township, Lebanon county, by John Wendel Gable and his son, John Franklin, was founded in America by John Gable (2), who was born February II, 1756, near Zeifenbeck, Principality of Waldeck. a son of John Gable (1). With other young men he was sold by the government to King George III, of England, and with his regiment was taken to Baton Rouge, La., thence to Vera Cruz, and finally to Havana, at which latter place he remained in bondage two years and seven months. He afterward came to Philadelphia, from which city he came to Heidelberg, Lebanon county, where he found employment with Hones Shenk, and later with Mr. Krall. In 1788 he went to Warwick, Lancaster county, where he worked for Joseph Gingrich. On August 23, 1789, he was married to Elizabeth Marzall, daughter of John Wendel Marzall, the latter a native of the Pfalz, Germany, who emigrated to America in 1762, purchased land near Lime Rock in 1764, and there lived until his death in John Gable and his young wife set up their house hold in Mt. Joy in 1790, and in 1795, moved to Sporting Hill, Lancaster county, where he worked at the weaver's trade. In 1803 Mr. Gable moved to Warwick township, settling on a small farm of about twenty acres, which he received from his father-in-law, and which is now the site of Lime Rock Station, on the Reading and Columbia railroad. In connection with the cultivation of his land he also worked as a weaver. His death occurred in To John Gable and wife were born four children, as follows: Maria, born August , married Rev. H. Scriba, a Lutheran minister at Manheim. Pa.; John (3), born November 8, 1795; Christian, born April 28, 1803; and Catherine, born December 13, John Gable (3) was married December , to Ann Maria Lutz, daughter of John Lutz, who was born in at Hanau, Germany, and came to America in 1775 or To John Gable (3) and his wife were born seven children as follows: Jonathan Monroe, born January 4, 1820; Mary Caroline, born July 16, 1821 ; Solomon Augustus, born January 30, 1825; John Wendel, born March ; Davis Emanuel, born June 24, 1829; William Henry, born August 31, 1836; and Jacob Benton, born June 4, John Wendel Gable was born near Lime Rock. On October , he was united in marriage with Magdalene Diehm, who was born October 31, 1824, daughter of Isaac Diehm, and to this union came three sons, John Franklin, born April 28, 1850; Isaac Addison, born December , died May ; and Levi D., born July 29, 1859, died May 4, 1863, Mrs. Magdalene (Diehm) Gable was a noble Christian woman, devoted to her home and family, and living a life that showered richest blessings on those around her. She entered into rest eternal July 31, 1895, aged seventy years and nine months. John Wendel Gable was a miller at the Speedwell Mills. In April 1851 he moved into his own house near Pennville. Lancaster county, but in the spring of i860 he moved with his family to Heidelberg township, Lebanon county, locating on a farm of 100 acres which he had purchased the previous year. He began farming, and being a man of broad understanding and practical common sense, he did not follow the old beaten track in the methods employed, but cleared and prepared his land on scientific principles, until in a short time the appearance of his farm underwent a wonderful change, and in place of bush and brier grew waving fields of grain and tobacco. The old brown sandstone house, which had been erected in 1749 by John George Smith, was completely renovated and repaired, until it bids fair to make a comfortable home for generations yet unborn. Mr. Gable took a great interest in education, and has ever been the warm friend and supporter of the schools, giving his time and means freely to advance its cause and encourage others to do the same. He is an active worker in the Lutheran Church, and has always been devoted to the interests of the Sunday School, acting as superintendent for more than thirty years. For many years he has served in its council, and has done much to make his chosen faith an influence for good in the community. John Franklin Gable, the only surviving child of his father, was educated in the district schools and at Palatinate College. In 1867 he began teaching in the public schools, and continued this work with much success for twenty-two terms, working during the summers on his father's farm. The management of the farm has gradually fallen upon his shoulders, and he now takes entire charge of it, besides operating, with great success, the Locust Grove Flour and Grist Mill. Like his father he is a practical workman, and sees at once the correct solution of whatever problem life presents to him. This, coupled with the executive ability that accomplishes what it undertakes, has brought much prosperity to him. In 1866 he united with the Lutheran Church, and has so ordered his life in harmony with the faith he professes, as to merit the high esteem of the community in which his life has been passed. On November 24, 1870, John Franklin Gable was wedded to Clara Bennetch, who was born November 30, 1851, fifth child of Bennevil and Sarah (Witters) Bennetch, the former born July 17, 1817, died June 4, 1899, and the latter born January 6, 1822, died July 5, To John F. Gable and wife have been born children as follows: (i) Flora, born July 8, 187 1, became an instrumental music teacher. On May , she married Ira J. Light, a graduate of the Millersville State Normal School, now teaching in the high school at Schaefferstown, Pa., and they have had five children, namely: Myra, born March 22, 1895; Adin Gable, January 24, 1896; Alin Caleb, March 2, 1898; Warren Eugene, March 22,, 1900; and John George, October 24, 1902, died April 3, (2) Charlotte, born March 5, 1881, was graduated June 26, 1902, at the Millersville State Normal School, and is now teaching the Waldeck school in Heidelberg township. (3) Mollie, born August 5, 1883, is a student in the Millersville State Normal School. (4) Emma, born June 12, 1889, is at home. Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 54

55 History of the Battle of Baton Rouge and the 3rd Waldeck Regiment In addition to being allied with France during the Revolution, the fledgling United States was also allied with Spain. King Charles III of Spain officially declared war on Great Britain on May 8, Two months later on July 8, 1779, he extended the right to make war to Spanish subjects in North America. The first step in this campaign was to take Baton Rouge. Lt. Col. Alexander Dickson, the British Commander at Baton Rouge, ordered the construction of Fort New Richmond. Also protecting the city was Fort Bute, built in Fort New Richmond and Baton Rouge were defended by 400 British regulars and the 3rd Waldeck Regiment (German), a total of 550 men. Bernardo de Galvez, the Spanish governor of Louisiana, commanded the Spanish troops. Fort Bute was taken on Sept 7, Fort New Richmond and Baton Rouge, were taken in a 3 hour battle on Sept 21st ending the British control of the Mississippi River. There are more details about the Battle of Baton Rouge on the Explore Southern History website. 24 At the time of the outbreak of the American War of Independence, Waldeck had nearly a century-old tradition of hiring out mercenary troops. But in 1776, the ruler of Waldeck attached great importance to sending only volunteers to America. Even the poor didn't want to go. Waldeck is a small town in Waldeck-Frankenberg district in northwestern Hesse, Germany. Of the Waldeckers, two captains, three lieutenants, three surgeons, eight sergeants, six drummers, three servants, and 176 privates surrendered in Baton Rouge. Here are more details about the history of the 3rd Waldeck Regiment. 25 Quoted from Bruce E. Burgoyne's Waldeck Soldiers of the American Revolutionary War "Originally scheduled to be sent to Canada in 1776, the Regiment was sent instead to New York to join the army of General William Howe. After service in the New York-New Jersey area, during which time men from the Regiment who were captured were sent to prison facilities in Pennsylvania and Maryland and some entered the American Army, the Regiment was ordered to West Florida. En route to West Florida the transports carrying the Waldeck Regiment stopped at Jamaica to regroup and to take on provisions and water. They then sailed to Pensacola. From Pensacola part of the Regiment was sent to the area of the Mississippi river, where the men were captured by the Spanish forces commanded by Don Bernardo Galvez. After being held captive for about a year, the men were transferred to Cuba, sailing first to Vera Cruz, Mexico. Following their exchange, the men returned to New York. Some of the men held prisoner in New Orleans deserted, went up the Mississippi river and joined George Rogers Clark who was fighting against the English in the Illinois country." 58 Gable Family Immigration Patterns Here's a summary of what I've found out about where the Wilhelm Gebel's 1800 plus direct line descendants (and I have seen lots more I haven't entered yet) have moved so far: (About 75% or better of my tree right now is descendants of our ancestor John Gable.) What's very clear though is that they moved all over mostly leaving Lancaster County between 1810 and From what I remember of the trees I've been investigating, their descendants moved into Ohio and Indiana and then started fanning out north, south and west into the central states up into Minnesota and Canada and down as far as Oklahoma and Texas and much later to the west coast. For Wilhelm's children that I investigated so far: Esther and Franz Fuhrman moved before 1820 to Ontario. Johann Gebel and most of his children moved to Ohio about Johann Gebel's son (?) Jacob (my mother's branch) stayed nearby in Lancaster County until Martin and Barbara stayed in Lancaster County. Henry and Valentine immigrated to Perry County, PA before 1830 Daniel immigrated to Franklin County, PA. Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 58

59 1.1 Henry Gebel and Maria Bauman/Bowman Henry Gebel (1.1) is the son of Wilhelm Gebel (1.) and Elizabeth Schreler, probably their oldest son since he's the first son listed in Wilhelm's will. The 1902 book, A History of the Gable Family 28, which was written by the descendants of Henry's son John H. Gable tells the story of Henry, his brother Valentine and two of Henry's children, all of which immigrated from Lancaster county, Pennsylvania to Perry County, Pennsylvania. It also mentions his two oldest daughters who moved to the western part of New York state. But first it talks about the original Gebel immigrant from Germany. The next section is quoted from the book. DNA Help: I have three Moderate level DNA matches (two of which are father and son) for descendants of Henry's daughter Nancy. If you're descended from Henry and have done your Ancestry DNA, please contact me (kalush@msu.edu) and I can help you check this out. It is likely that I should be able to find people with higher matches to me because I have High matches to Martin Gabel, who is only a half brother to my ancestor John (Henry's brother) while Henry is a full brother. A Nine Year Old Stowaway! As near as can be ascertained, in the year 1750, a lad about nine years of age, presumably by the name of George, though this is by no means positive, managed in some way to conceal himself on a sailing vessel, bound from Germany to America. (It is quite evident from this fact that the family were of German origin.) After a long and tedious voyage accompanied by considerable danger, this youthful emigrant reached the shore of America, landing either in New York or Philadelphia. Upon his arrival this little stowaway made his way to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and into the green fields of the country, and found employment among the farmers. It must have been a brave heart to have guided one so young amongst total strangers, and his youthful fancies must have brought to mind scenes of home and friends left behind, poor lonely lad, in a far off country. Finding employment in this locality, he maintained himself and grew to manhood among those good, worthy farmers. At an unknown date and age he married in Lancaster county, Penn. Here two sons, Henry Gable and Valentine, were born and in all probability other children, but, if so, all trace has been lost of them. Valentine Gable had eight children Isaac Gable, Samuel, Peter, George, Elizabeth, Polly, Susana, Hetta. HENRY GABLE This lad grew into manhood and in about 1766, was united in marriage in Lancaster county, to a Miss Bowman. Here he lived for a number of years until he moved to Pfoutes Valley where he died at the age of 65, and is buried near Millerstown, Penn. 28 Compiled by Frank Allaben for Percival K. 60 Four children were born to this union, three daughters and one son. These children were born in Lancaster county. The two oldest daughters upon reaching womanhood, married and moved with their husbands to New York state, locating in the western part, where they lived to a good old age, when they died and were buried there. The youngest daughter, by name of Nancy, was united in marriage to Christian Long, of Pfoutes Valley, Perry county. Here they resided until death called them to their eternal home. Twelve sons and one daughter were born to them. Analysis of the statements in the book using information from Gable research: Assuming the 9 year old immigrant story to be basically true, based on the 1750 date, the boy could be Wilhelm Gebel. If the immigration occurred earlier, the boy could be a father or grandfather. It is also possible that the whole story was made up at some point. The story actually says that Henry's father is "presumably by the name of George, though this is by no means positive". This leads me to believe the book writers had doubts that the name commonly used in the story wasn't added at some point to give the stowaway a name. There is a Johann Georg Gobel whose son Johannes is the earliest Gable birth record recorded at Trinity Lutheran Church. He would have been called by his call by name, George, rather than his spiritual name Johann. This could be the source of the name George in the story and he could even be the stowaway. I haven't found anything to connect him to Wilhelm Gebel's branch of the Gable family. According to First Reformed Church of Lancaster, William Goebel and Elizabeth Scheler were married on Jul 31, 1759 and Henry Gobel was born on June 6, 1760 and baptized on August 10th. According to Trinity Lutheran Church records in Lancaster, Heinrich Gebel married Maria Bauman on Dec 19, 1786 (not 1766). Different people have different death dates for him ranging from 1831 to various 1850s dates. I couldn't find a source of the 1831 death date but it was the most believable to me (61 years being close to the 65 years mentioned in the book). They also have different birth dates ranging from 1760, 1766, The 1782 birth date is likely incorrect. The trees that have this birth date also have multiple wives not discussed in the book and probably are a combination of two different men. Many of the 1850s death dates are in different counties. The book says he's buried in Millersville. There are actually at least two Millersvilles in PA. The most likely one is the Millersville in Perry County, close to where Henry's farm appears on the warrant map and where his brother Valentine actually lived in Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 60

Henry Gable's father Wilhelm Gebel (-1810), who lived in Manheim Township, Lancaster County and was a neighbor of the Long family. The Schlissler/Shisler family is also from Manheim township and in fact Mary Gable Shisler's husband has Long ancestors descended from John Lang/Long, who was the original patent owner of the land near where Wilhelm Gebel lived. There is also a Henrich Gebel and Susanna Luck or Luon (b. abt 1750, married 1770) of Manor Township, who have a son named Henrich, born 25 Dec He appears to be a good candidate for also being Henry Gebel ( #2). 68 About the Long Family: The History of the Long Family of Pennsylvania 33 book contains a section about the John Lang Family of Manheim township (pages 39-84). John Lang/Long is the original patent owner of the Long family land near WIlhelm Gebel's farm. He is also an ancestor of David Schissler, wife of Mary Gable and Susanna Schlissler, and wife of Abraham Gable. David and Susanna Schlissler are siblings. Their parents are Conrad Schlissler and Anna Long. I assume he's also an ancestor of Wilhelm Gebel's neighbor Benjamin Long. 69 About the Michael Baughman family of Manheim Township: At this time, I don't know who Henry's wife Maria Bowman/Bauman is descended from. This section and the next are a couple of possibilities I explored. On November 20, 1717, a land warrant was issued to Michael Baughman of Strasburg in the County of Chester authorizing him to take up 400 acres amongst the late surveys made near Conestoga. This later became Manheim Township of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Michael's sons changed the spelling to Bachman after his death. Apparently, it was pronounced "Boff-man". There may have been a transition at some point to Bauman or Bowman, pronounced "Bo-man". Michael was a land speculator and purchased land in various areas of Lancaster County and also Lebanon County. 34 His children were born between 1720 and 1735 include Anna, Michael Jr., Christian, John, Elizabeth, Barbara, Lissey, Veronica, Magdalena and Peter. The original land grant is in the northwest part of Manheim Township, but there is a second 190 acre land grant nearer to the Schreiner land grant in the northeast section. Based on early tax records from Manheim Township, Peter, John and Christian Bachman were present. In the 1790 and 1800 in Lancaster Township or Borough, there are also John, William and Andrew Bausman but they may not be related. Based on that information, I checked whether Peter Bachman had a daughter named Maria. He did, but she married Jacob Hostetter. Frederick Eiselberger sold land in 1753 to "Adam Simon Kuhn and William Bausman, of Lancaster, who in turn sold later to Abraham Stoner, who owned the property and lived upon it in "Peter Bachman was among the early settlers, and one of the largest resident landowners in the township. He ha done tract of land of three hundred acres, which was granted to him by the Penns, and which was assessed at three thousand five hundred and twenty six pounds. He died before 1786, and his widow, Mary Bachman, held the property at that time. Descendants of the family are still in the county." 36 Tax 1771 (Baghman), 1772, 1773, 1779 (Bachman), 1782 (Backman) - Peter Baughman listed in Tax statements in Manheim Township 1782 William Bausman listed in Tax statement in Manheim Township 1793, 1800 Septennial Census - John and Peter Bachman listed in Manheim Township 1790 and 1800 Census - John, William and Andrew Bausman listed in Lancaster Township or Borough 1810 Census - John, Christian and Peter Baughman listed in Manheim Township From The Boys From Lake County by James Keir Baughman, 2006, page History of Lancaster County, Ellis and Evans, 1883, p History of Lancaster County, Ellis and Evans, 1883, p Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 69

71 1.2 John and Elizabeth Gable John Gable is the son of Wilhelm Gebel (1) and Elizabeth Scheler. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, probably in Manheim Township. He next appears in a Manheim township tax list in 1785 as a freeman and in the 1793 and 1800 Septennial Census records in Manheim township. According to First Reformed Church of Lancaster his parents were married in 1759 and he was born in 1761: Goebel, William, Elizabeth Scheler 31 Jul 1759 Johannes Gebel b. 16 Nov 1761, son of Wilhelm Gebel and Elizabeth Scheler Gebel, John, Elizabeth Bens (Benz?) of Manheim, 30 Apr 1792 Records from Ohio show that his wife's name was Elizabeth. There is a First Reformed Church record of John Gebel marrying Elizabeth Bens (or Benz) in In the introduction it discusses how I came to the conclusion that my ancestor John Gable is actually Wilhelm Gebel and Elizabeth Scheler's son Johannes Gebel. This decision was mostly based on the prior research that concluded that John Gable came from Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and the discovery of Wilhelm Gebel's 1810 will for which Johannes Gebel (also called John Gable in the accompanying probate records) was the executor and lived in Manheim Township. The discovery of various Pennsylvania Septennial Census and Tax records from between 1773 and 1800 which listed only Gebels that had names that matched Wilhelm's will seemed to support the theory that Wilhelm was John's father. I was able to rule out Wilhelm Gebel and Barbara Weller's younger son Johann (John) born in 1774 based on the 1785/1786 tax lists. They had the following children: 1.2 John Gable b. 72 John Gable's Birth Year (???!) As was discussed above I believe that John Gable was born in 1761 because of the First Reformed birth record. A second possible source is his presence in a 1785 tax record in Manheim Township, which makes him born in 1764 or earlier. The only information from later in his life that we have about John Gable's birth year is from the Federal Census. These census records gave differing and contradictory birth year ranges. A death record or a grave have not been found. My assumption is that in one or more of the federal census his age was tallied in the wrong column or I have identified the wrong John Gable in that census. The places for the census records were consistent with what we knew about John's location from other sources. The two tables below are an attempt to determine what John and Elizabeth Gable's birth years were based on the US Census. All years except 1840 were in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The 1840 Census was from Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. There is some doubt when John actually moved to Ohio. There are property records there in There are also two different John Gebels in Manheim Township in The two most believable census are the 1800 Census because Jacob Broband (father of John's daughter's husband Christian Prowant) is listed four lines above John and the 1840 Census because John's sons Henry and Benjamin are listed in the two lines above him. Some of these census may be for the wrong family or be tallied incorrectly. Using just those two census, we get between 1761 and Census Year Age John Age Elizabeth Year John Year Elizabeth <= Census Year >= JE JE JE JE JE 1810 J J J E E E E E 1820 JE JE JE JE JE JE E E E J J J 1840 JE JE JE Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 72

73 Based on further research I have concluded the following (more details later in this document about why I believe this). My mother is descended from Jacob Gable (Pennsylvania branch) and my father is descended from Benjamin Gable (Ohio branch). It is my belief that both Jacob and Benjamin as well as the other siblings listed below were all children of John and Elizabeth Gable who originally lived in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and moved in about 1830 to Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. There are documents connecting the Ohio branch of the family (John and Elizabeth, Benjamin, Polly, Catherine and Henry) with each other though no actual relationship is mentioned in an official document. The relationship of Jacob Gable and his descendants to the Ohio branch of the family is based over 100 years (1830 to 1950) of letters and visits between the two branches of the Gable family as well as a belief that they are related. 74 John and Elizabeth Gable Census John and Elizabeth Gable (Gebel) lived in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1800, 1810 and 1820 (according to the census) and in Milton Township, Wayne County in 1831, 1834 and 1838 according to deeds and in 1840 according to the census. Birth Dates: John/Elizabeth , Jacob 1793, Polly 1797, Catherine 1800, Benjamin 1806, Henry It s fairly certain all of the children were born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. The only birth location information for John and Elizabeth is the 1880 Census of their sons Benjamin and Henry which agree that their parents were both born in Pennsylvania. 83 Can We Find the Johann Gebel Family Bible? In 1910 The Pennsylvania German journal published two articles about the 1819 John Baer bible. 39 article describes the bible. The first "Mr. Baer was a German publisher from 1817 until his death in This edition of the Bible was by far the largest and finest German book so far issued in America. It was a folio Bible, and the publisher claimed that it was the first Bible of this form published in America. There were 1183 pages of the size 9 1/2 by 15 inches. The print is clear and remarkably uniform. The book contains, besides the Bible proper, a history of the Sacred Scriptures, a Biography of Dr. Martin Luther, and a Bible Dictionary; and also a list of subscribers to the book. It was customary in those days already to publish the Bible and other books in this way. There were 1420 subscribers, distributed as follows: Pennsylvania 971, Ohio 310, Maryland 105, Virginia 24, New York 6, New Jersey 2, North Carolina 2. The book is strongly bound with leather and wooden sides and is remarkably well preserved to this day." I've watched a YouTube video 40 done by a collector who has two of these bibles. The description above still applies today. The second article publishes a list of the 1420 subscribers. This list actually includes three of my Lancaster County ancestors, including Johann Gebel of Manheim Township. There is also a second site which has some photos of the John Baer bible and more information. 41 It's pretty clear that the Johann Gebel that purchased the bible is one of Wilhelm's descendants. We know for sure that his son Johannes Gebel (born 1761) lived in Manheim Township. He's the most likely choice for the purchaser of the bible. He's listed as John Gable Sr. in the 1820 Census. There is also a John Gable Jr. listed on the next line which has 2 males between 26 and 44 listed. I found out recently that putting Jr. after a name in those early census did not necessarily mean that the head of that household was the son of the Sr. It could mean a younger man with the same surname. So the second John Gable could be Johannes brother Johann Gebel (born 1774). I had originally believed that John Jr. was Johannes Gebel's son Jacob Gabel (born in 1793). 39 The Pennyslvania-German, Volume XI, pages , hukewir2iwqk77vahvi_imkhcnkbaoq6aeijjaa#v=onepage&q=1819%20john%20baer%20bible%20manheim&f=false Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 83

84 1.3 Valentine Gebel and Mary Elisabeth Buch Get 1773, 1786 Septennial Census for George Buch Valentine Gebel is the son of Wilhelm Gebel (1). Based on his listing in the 1800 Septennial Census in Manheim Township, he was born before 1779, most likely in Manheim Township. "In 1779 (tavern) licenses were granted to Peter Maurer, Valentine Gable, and Micheal Weidler. Valentine Gable's tavern was a brick house on the Dunkerstown (Ephrata) road, three miles from Lancaster, about where Roseville now is. He was a brother-in-law of John Michael, of Lancaster City." 42 This is a few miles south of the Shreiner Farm. Aaron McWilliams, Pennsylvania Archives explains why Valentine appears in the 1800 Septennial Census in Manheim Township, but not the federal census: "The Septennial Census is basically a list of taxable inhabitants (21 years and older) used to properly apportion representation in the PA General Assembly. Being a list of taxable inhabitants drawn from the tax rolls, I would expect it to contain more names than the U.S. Federal Census, which lists only the heads of household (the U.S. census also missed people)." There was a Valentine Gable in the 1800 and 1810 Census in Earl Township, Lancaster County. There is a poorly written Valentine Gable there in the 1820 Census. This might be the him or he could still be in Manheim township and not be listed in the census. The west edge of Earl Township is only about 2 miles from Wilhelm Gebel's farm. According to First Reformed Church of Lancaster, on 31 Mar 1795 Valentine Gaebel married Mary Elisabeth Buch. According to The History of the Gable Family, Valentine and Elizabeth Gable had eight children Isaac Gable, Samuel, Peter, George, Elizabeth, Polly, Susana and Hetta. 42 History of Lancaster County, Ellis and Evans, p Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 84

90 1.4 Daniel Gebel and Susanna Daniel Gable (1.4) is the son of Wilhelm Gebel (1.). He was probably born after Henry (1760), John (1761) and Valentine and before John (1774), most likely before Wilhelm's 1770 marriage. This is based on his sons being listed in order of their birth in Wilhelm's will. One of my Ancestry DNA matches 46 had a Very High match (descended from Daniel's son William and Nancy Switzer) with me and I have two other High matches (descended from Daniel's daughter Nancy and Henry Summers). My assumption is that Daniel immigrated to Greencastle Borough which is in the center of Antrim Township sometime between becoming an adult and his son William's birth in 1801, and that the original source of the birth information estimated his birth date as 1775 and assumed he'd always lived in Antrim Township. 93 In the tree below the connection of Fanny Gable and Henry Pfoultz Jr to Daniel is iffy. I found this couple based on a search for Fanny Gable and husband Foutz using the spelling from Daniel's will. Some of the trees have a birth place of Somerset county, PA for Fanny but others didn't specify a birth place, leading me to believe that Somerset county might be incorrect. The reason that I thought this might be the same Fanny is because of the similarity in the husband's surname and because her husband was born in Rapho township, where Wilhelm Gebel's wife Barbara Weller was from and Henry Pfoultz's father was from Warwick township, where some of the other brothers of Daniel settled and as near as five miles from where Wilhelm lived. 96 1.5 Catharine Gebel and John Johnson Catharine Gebel is the daughter of Wilhelm Gebel (1). According to Trinity Lutheran Church records she married Johannes Johns on Nov According to her father's 1810 will she was the wife of John Johnson. Johnson is a common surname. John Johnson, John Johnston and John Johns are present in Manheim Township in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It's unclear whether these are the same man or even related to each other. In 1780 a license for a tavern in Manheim township was granted to John Johnson. 48 Here are the locations where variations on John Johnson were found in the Pennsylvania Septennial Census and US Census. I included only Lancaster county townships near Manheim township. There are others I didn't include. I would assume the most likely candidates are the ones in Manheim Township and Leacock Township. See the warrant map of the John Johnson property in Leacock Township on the next page. I reviewed my DNA results and found no matches with Lancaster County Johnsons. 48 History of Lancaster County, Ellis and Evans, 1883, p The earliest tavern licenses granted to Manheim residents of which there is any record were issued in 1765 to George Honey, Samuel Bare (Oregon), Christian Smith and Sebastian Shober. The next year Bear's and Honey's were continued and additional licenses were granted to Henry Gesser, Peter Musenlus, Henry Shank and George Bowman. In 1780 but two were granted for taverns in this township, viz., to Peter Sype and John Johnson. Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 96

97 John Johnson received a patent on May 19, 1742 for land in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County. This is very close to where I believe the Gebel family lived in Manheim Township. The Schreiner farm in the other maps earlier in this document is where I've drawn the red hexagon. This is unlikely to be Catharine's husband, maybe a father or uncle. 98 1.6 Elizabeth Gebel and John W. Michael Elizabeth Gebel (1.6) is the daugher of Wilhelm Gebel (1). She may be the daughter of Elizabeth Schreler. Her husband John W. Michael is the son of Philip Jacob Michael ( ) and Sallie Webb ( ). John Michael's portrait was painted by Jacob Eichholtz in 1812 and his wife Elizabeth also was painted in Jacob Eichholtz married a widow named Catharine Hatz Michael Possibly a relative to these Michaels. Apparently, John Michael grew up in Roseville which is a few miles south of the Shreiner Farm. 49 From History of Lancaster County, Ellis and Evans, 1883, pages 982, 984, 400: "Taverns: In 1779 licenses were granted to Peter Maurer, Valentine Gable, and Micheal Weidler. Valentine Gable's tavern was a brick house on the Dunkerstown (Ephrata) road, three miles from Lancaster, about where Roseville now is. He was a brother-in-law of John Michael, of Lancaster City." Roseville. At this place many years ago John Michael, Sr. the proprietor for a long period of the Grape Hotel, in Lancaster, was born and grew to manhood and kept a tavern. In 1836, Peter Frankfort kept it, and at that time there was but one house on the site of the village besides the old tavern. On October 6, 1788, John Michael advertised in the Lancaster Newspaper and Reporter, a paper published in German in this borough, that he has opened a tavern at the sign of "Prince Ferdinand," in King Street, not far from the jail. This tavern-stand was kept before this time by John Feldman, and stood on the present site of the Cooper House. In 1794, became "mine host" of the Grape Hotel in Lancaster, at North Queen Street. 99 From Chenchen Qu's paper: 50 After his death in 1821, John Michael passed the tavern business to his son John Michael, Jr., who had taken charge of the finances of the business as early as During John Michael, Jr.' s time, the tavern was also known as the "Grape Hotel" and "Michael's House. " 7 After John Michael, Jr.'s death in 1867, the ownership of the tavern transferred to his wife, Elizabeth Michael. 8 She continued the hotel business after her husband's death until In the Lancaster City Directories from 187 l to l 876, Elizabeth Michael's name appeared as the proprietor of the Grape Hotel, and the l870 U.S. Census indicates that her occupation as "hotel keeper" in that year. 9 The Lancaster City Directory of shows that the Michael family's address was changed to "50 Duke Street" and that the proprietor of the Grape Hotel changed to Silas Wright. 50 From the Grape Tavern to Family Possession: Provenance Research of the Muench Collection in the Phillips Museum of Art, Chenchen Qu, Spring 2017, ART 490, Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA; Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 99

100 History of the Grape Hotel 51 In 1741, John Harris obtained a license and opened, on the lot which, in 1769, was bought by Adam Riegart at sheriff's sale, the tavern that has passed into history under the still enduring name and device of "The Grape". The tavern-site was shifted from the original to the adjoining lot, but it was as easy to transfer the name as to change the site, and so it is borne to-day by one of the Lancaster hotels. The original "Gape" occupied the site of Bowers & Hurst's store, on North Queen Street. The lot which Adam Reigart bought in 1769 had uponit one brick messuage and stables, and was bounded on the north by Conrad Schwartz's lot,, and on the south by Michael Fordney's. As Reigart was licensed in 1765, he may have kept tavern here before he bought the house. He continued to keep "The Grape Hotel" until March 3, During the time of the Revolution this tavern became historic through several associations. The Committee of Observation of the county met there March 30, Charges were made on that occasion against several of the borough merchants that they had sold tea contrary to "the association of the Continental Congress", and they were notified to appear before the committee. The committee met at "The Grape" again on April 27, 1775, when the news was received that Gen. Gage had attacked the inhabitants of Massachusetts Bay, and the report that the Parliament of Great Britain had determined, by force of arms, to compel the colonies to submission was confirmed. Again in May, the same body of men, of which Adam Reigart was a member, assembled at the tavern to deliberate upon the question of providing powder for the county. It is also a matter of history that "The Grape" was honored with the dignified presence of the Supreme Executive Committee in the momentous year John Michael, who superseded Reigart as "mine host" of this tavern in 1794, had previously kept a public house in the borough. He was landlord until May 5, 1821, and in 1804, ten years after he took possession, put out the new sign "Conestoga Waggon", which, however, did not entirely supersede the use of the old name. The burgesses met at the house in John Michael, Jr. was the successor of his father, receiving the property by purchase. He kept the house until 1839, restoring the original name. The wroughtiron bunch of grapes now hanging in front of the hotel was made for, and used by, Adam Reigart. On March 20, 1839, John Michael, Jr., purchased the lot adjoining "The Grape" tavern on the north of the executors of William Kirkpatrick, and fitting up a building upon it suitable for a public house, removed his tavern and the old familiar sign to it, and opened business on the site of the present hotel, which has been known ever since either by the old name or that of the Michael House. 51 History of Lancaster County, Ellis and Evans, 1883, pages 395, 400 Connecting the Gable Family: Early Gebel Lancaster County Settlers 100

104 1.8 Johann "John" Gebel John Gebel is the son of Wilhelm Gebel (1) and Barbara Weller. According to Trinity Lutheran Church records he was born 20 Nov 1774 and baptized on 14 May Due to the large number of John Gables in Lancaster county trying to identify him is difficult. The one census record that it seems likely is the 1820 census record in Manheim Township. I'm assuming in these records John Gable Sr is his brother Johannes (b. 1761) and John Gable Jr. is him. They are listed on consecutive lines which makes it even more likely. In these early census records, Jr. and Sr. didn't necessarily mean father and son. Sometimes it meant older and younger. His brother John did have a son born in 1793 named Jacob (already married), but if he was listed as head of household his name should have been Jacob. In these early tax records, married men often weren't listed as head of household (i.e. their name is shown) but included in someone else's household like a parent or employer. He was still alive in 1810 according to his father's will. This is most likely him (Junior 1.8) and his brother Johannes (Senior 1.2) in Census Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Name Page Free White Males Free White Females < <10 John Gable Jun John Gable Sen My best guess for him is John Gable and Elizabeth Koehler Starke of Warwick Township. In the 1850 Census he is listed in the census there (age 75) with his daughter Elizabeth Eavens (Evans), age 40. They are listed next to a Buch family, probably also originally from Manheim township. She married Frantz Fuhrman on Sep at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The following records were found in Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania records 57. No birth/baptism record was found there for Frantz Fuhrman. Based on these two records Frantz Fuhrman's parents may be Johannes Fuhrman and Maria Johanna. Both of these children were born to the same couple because in the name Maria Johanna, Maria is a spiritual (named after a saint) name and Johanna is the name she was called by. On June 9, 1818, this land was transferred to Abram Gable, his brother-in-law. On March 9, 1827, it was again sold to Conrad Shisler and on Feb. 15, 1845 it was sold to Abram Shisler, and at his death passed into the hands of his heirs. 122 1.13 Barbara Gebel and John Frankfurter (Frankfort) Barbara Gebel was the daughter of Wilhelm Gebel (1) and Barbara Weller. According to Trinity Lutheran Church records she was born on 13 Jun 1789 and baptized on Oct She was married to Johannes Frankfurter on 18 Aug 1807 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She died on Aug and is buried at Long- Landis Cemetery in Manheim township. It appears that Barbara and John may have had a son named John Frankfort born in 1813, died 7 Dec He was buried in Rothsville United Zion Cemetery in Rothsville, Warwick township, Lancaster County with his father and his stepmother. Rothsville is very close to where the Gebel family lived in Manheim township and even closer to where Barbara's brother Martin Gebel was buried in Millport. It doesn't appear that John Jr. married or had children. It appears that Barbara and John had a daughter Mary Frankford and that Barbara died in childbirth.
