1 Connecting the Gable Family Family of Catherine Gable and Christian Prowant Alice Gable Kalush October 2011 Last Updated: 3/7/2019 This document is part of the Connecting the Gable Family book which is divided into chapters which are in separate files. This document covers the descendants of Catherine Gable and Christian Prowant. Catherine's ancestors Wilhelm Gebel / Barbara Weller and John Gable / Elizabeth are covered in the Wilhelm Gebel and Barbara Weller document. Thanks to Lowell Weller, who first told me about my ancestor Benjamin Gable's sister Catherine Gable Prowant and first told me about their grandfather Wilhelm Gebel (even if I was a doubting Thomas about that part at the time! It definitely helped to know about it later!). Thanks to Eric Blocher for his wonderful Brovont (Prowant) family website 1, to Ray O. Brovont for his Brovont family book 2, to Pauline Spencer Tracy 3 for her book about the Church of the Brethren and the Prowant family and to Diana Johnson and Ron Thomas for their research about the Prowant family and pointing me at the above resources. DISCLAIMER: In this document I've inserted clarifications or insights to what others have provided. They are in red. I probably know more about the Gable family than most of them, but I'm not that knowledgeable about the Prowant family. 1 Wilhelm Gebel ( -1810) and Barbara Weller (abt ) 2 Johannes Gebel (John Gable) and Elizabeth 3 Jacob Gabel ( ) and Elizabeth Hambright ( ) 3 Catherine Gable ( ) and Christian Prowant ( ) 3 Benjamin Gable ( ) and Anna Koppes ( ) 3 Henry Gable ( ) and Lydia Baer ( ) Documents in this Series: Connecting the Gable Family: Wilhelm Gebel and Barbara Weller Connecting the Gable Family: Jacob Gable and Elizabeth Hambright Connecting the Gable Familly: Catherine Gable and Christian Prowant Connecting the Gable Family: Benjamin Gable and Anna Koppes My religious and paternal heritage of the Church of the Brethren and genealogies of the Prowants, Burkharts, Shafers, and Dickeys, , by Pauline Shafer Tracy,

5 From History of Putnam County, Ohio : its peoples, industries, and institutions, Pages : CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN (DUNKARD), BLANCHARD. It is a lamentable fact that the early records of Blanchard have never been recorded or have been very carelessly destroyed. This makes the church history a matter of memory and not altogether authentic in some of the dates. In 1840 the first Dunkard (Brethren) church was located at what is now the Blanchard church, at a point five miles southeast of the town of Continental. One of the first Dunkard settlers seems to have been a man whose name was Prowant. Mr. Prowant was the father of five sons, four of whom later became active ministers in the Dunkard faith. Three of these sons spent their entire lives in the Blanchard church. Meetings were held in the homes of brethren and were conducted by ministers from Allen county until the year In that year, John Prowant was elected to the ministry of that church, and this must be about the date that the Blanchard church was organized. After the church organization the services were held in school houses and the homes of members until 1886, when the church building, which is located one-half mile west of DuPont, was erected and dedicated. It is a neat, plain house of worship and was erected at a cost of two thousand five hundred dollars. The following is a list of ministers who have been elected to the ministry from Blanchard church membership: John Prowant, first elder or bishop; Henry Prowant, William Prowant and Daniel Prowant, all of whom are deceased; Amos Budd, Harry Fuller, D. P Weller and L. H. Prowant. Reverends Fuller, Weller, Prowant and Prowant are still actively engaged in the labors of the Blanchard church, with Elder D. P. Weller as overseer of the work. Note: Wilhelm Gebel's second wife Barbara Weller is from the Weller family. connection. I'm not sure if there's a Between the years the Sunday school was organized and is now in a prosperous condition, with an attendance which rivals any in the county, under the superintendency of Floyd Clevenger. Many members have been lost by emigration. The membership at present numbers one hundred and fifty souls. 5
6 From "A Resume of the Prowants" by Richard Etter on 8/6/1965 presented at the Prowant Family Reunion: "The first reunion was held in A list of those present, their addresses and which branch they belonged to was given, The grandsons of Christian Prowant and Catherine (Gable) Prowant or Browand held this first reunion. Christian Prowant was of Pennsylvania Dutch and Catherine was of the Swiss origin. They came to Putnam County in 1836 and settled near Dupont. They are buried in Sigler Cemetery near Dupont, Ohio. They were affiliated with the church of the Brethren, earlier called Dunkards or Dunkers. To them were born 9 children: 1. John who married Susan Burkhard 2. William married Halana Bechtel to them were born 5 children they adopted a girl 3. Henry married Katy Eyer they had 7 children 4. Daniel married Sarah Jane Rodgers and had 10 children 5. He survived the first attached but became ill a year later with the same ailment and succumbed to this affliction on Sept. 2, His wife Catherine survived him nine years, passing away on her 75th birthday August 4, Both are buried in the Sigler Cemetery, east of Dupont on the south bank of the Blanchard River, just a short distance from where he had lived all his life in Putnam County. Next paragraph said: At that time a man from Ottawa, Ohio, erected tombstones to mark the place of Their burial; and on these stones their surname was engraved, "Browant". In 1965 they were replaced with a new stone contributed by two of his grandsons, Jacob and Michael Prowant.... 6

Christian Browant was born in 1796 in Manheim township?, Lancaster Co., PA. He married Catherine Gable/Gabel in 1820 in Lancaster Co., PA. They were landlords of an inn located on the Susquehannah River for six years. Then they moved to Cumberland Co., PA where he worked as a day laborer. Christian established the German Baptist Brethren Church in Putnam Co., OH and served as minister of the church. Christian died 2 Sep 1866 of typhoid fever. Catherine died on her 75th birthday, 4 Aug Both are buried in Sigler Cemetery, Putnam Co.,OH. Christian spelled his name Browant but when his tombstone was replaced with a new one his name was changed to Prowant, a spelling that all his children used. CATHERINE: She attended school with James Buchanan who became President of U.S. This is now in doubt as she would have been too young to go to school with James Buchanan
8 From Lowell Weller (from Indiana) and Jean Sears: Christian and Catherine moved to Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio about In 1831 Christian was a witness on the deed where John Gable (Catherine s father) bought property in Milton Township from Thomas Ward. In 1836 they moved again to Perry township, Putnam Co., OH. In 1848 he purchased 160 acres from James Rogers where he had been living since He may have purchased the land earlier but the deed may not have been recorded until They were among the pioneers of Putnam Co. Christian established the German Baptist Brethren Church in Putnam Co., OH and served as minister of the church. Christian died 2 Sep 1866 of typhoid fever. Catherine died on her 75th birthday, 4 Aug Both are buried in Sigler Cemetery, Putnam Co, OH. Christian spelled his name Browant but when his tombstone was replaced with a new one his name was changed to Prowant, a spelling that all his children used. From Lowell Weller 8/2012: (The Weller / Gable connection) This is a follow up on the Christian Browand Family. Daniel the 5th child was my ancestor. His 8th child was Arminta ( her name is often misspelled) Prowant. She married Delphos Weller (he was a Church of the Brethren minister). They are my paternal grandparents. John was an Elder and Minister in the German Baptist Brethren Church. Extract from 1896 Biographical History of Allen and Putnam Co., Ohio: Rev. John Prowant..."his parents were Christian and Catherine (Gabel) Prowant, the father having been born in the same county (Lancaster) in Pennsylvannia in 1795, the son of Jacob Prowant, born of Swiss-French ancestry. Before the war of 1812, Jacob was one of the most extensive land owners and wealthiest farmers in Pennsylvania, owning and cultivating the famous Wheatland farm. Suffering some business reversals, his fine and large estate was sold by a decree of the court and it passed into the hands of James Buchanan, who was afterwards president of the United States. The new proprietor kindly permitted the former owner to spend his declining years on the old farm." 10

Obituary: Obit from Gospel Herald, vol. v, no. 41, Jan 9, 1913, p654,655,656: PROWANT. - Mary Myers Prowant, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Myers, was born June 8, 1841, in Putnam Co., O.; died at her home in Perry Twp., Putnam Co., O., Dec. 24, 1912; aged 71y. 6m. 16d. She was united in marriage Feb. 15, 1863, to Ephraim Prowant. To this union were born 5 sons and 1 daughter, who, with the husband and father, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife and mother. There are also 20 grandchildren and 4 sisters living. She was united with the Mennonite Church in August, 1868, and lived a faithful Christian life until called to her eternal home. She enjoyed making home pleasant and no task seemed too great for her. Her good deeds and kindness have been equally distributed, always faithful to her Christian duty, giving advice to those in trouble, sympathy to those in sorrow, and aid to the unfortunate. She was loved and esteemed by all her neighbors, who share the sorrow of her bereaved family and relatives. She was the first one of the family (including grandchildren) to be called by death, and as we have such good evidence that she had peace with God and is now resting from her labors, may all prepare to meet her in heaven. Funeral services were conducted at the Mount Zion Church Dec. 26, by Moses Brenneman. Text, Rev. 14:13. Burial in cemetery nearby. "A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our home, That never will be filled." I have images of both of their death certificates if anyone is interested

40 "I Remember" from the book "Brovont" by Ray O. Brovont, page 4: book: Brovont, Ephraim Brovont, , Elizabeth Bowser, , by Ray O. Brovont, published 1990, 164 pages 8 "They [meaning Ephraim Brovont and Elizabeth Bowser] were my great grandparents and had nine children. (Their names on another page.) I do not know what year they moved on the farm in Medina Co., Ohio I suppose in This farm is located on the corner Pawnee Moss or Freeman roads north west of the corner along the Norfolk and Western R.R. between Spencer and Lodi. My wife and I [Ray O. and Naomi Brovont] visited this farm home in 1976, the young man living there told us the house has not been changed very much except inclosing a porch and installed a bath and a garage on to the north side of the house, the large double doors are still there that they opened for company and worship. Lizzie Graham said Ephraims family made a home for the members of the Black River congregation who were not able to care for themselves. Some years ago the barn burned down. Up the road was a little house north of the big house. On the south east corner of this farm was a small cemetery, in it we found the tomb stone of Anna Brovant she died July 24, 1860 at 87 years of age. We have no record of where Ephraims father is buried, Ephraims worshipped north east from their house, several miles. Black River Church of the Brethren. My grandfather Joseph often spoke of Pap Rittenhouse he was one of their ministers and he donated land off of his farm for the meeting house. My grandfather Joseph and my father Henry E. Brovont were born on this farm, my grandparents with my father aged 2 years of age moved to Stark Co., Ohio in 1882 or 3, they went to church at West Nimishellen where grandma came from. Elizabeth and an infant are buried in the North Canton cemetery in the north west corner by the road. A small base of a stone might be Ephraims stone. [] denote my comments About 18 years ago Elder Isaac Mohler took Stanley Brovont to this cemetery and he saw this small sand stone that he thinks was Ephraim's."

You can me at lgledhill@busprod.com ( no longer valid) From Ron Thomas 2/2019: I also am sending you photos of hand written information from my grandmother Gladys Irene Coldwell. My grandmother was the daughter of Electa Smith and William Rodgers, with William being the son of Jessie Rodgers and Mary Prowant. Ron, I noticed below that your grandmother believed the Prowant family was from Ireland. I haven't researched that part, but that makes it interesting that Christian Prowant married Catherine Gable who is from a German family. Before the Revolutionary War there was very little interaction between the people from Germany, England, Ireland and Scotland and also very little interaction between people from different religious groups. People tended to keep inside their own ethnic/religious groups. All of this changed during the American Revolution because everyone had to work together to obtain independence. But it still took a while for intergroup marriages to become common. When Christian Prowant and Catherine Gable married in 1820 they were on the cutting edge of this movement. Alice 41
