Generation One 1. Thomas Terry, born about of Middletown, Bucks, Pennsylvania; 2 died before 28 May in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. 4,5 Thomas married 6 abt 1674 a Bowden (probably Sarah) born 1657 of West New Jersey (Burlington County, New Jersey now Bristol Twp, Bucks, Pennsylvania) daughter of Mordecai and Rebecca Bowden 7, some of the first settlers of what became Bristol Twp, Bucks County. 8,9 On 14 Jul 1683 William Penn granted unto Thomas 1 Calc d from the birthyear of oldest son Jasper Jan 1701, a Thomas Terry purchased 100 acres of land in Bristol Township identified in the 1714 entry of Jasper Terry; recorded 18 Jun 1705, Philadelphia Patent Book A, Vol. 2, pp Thomas Terry appears in the legal records of Bucks County at various times as early as 2 Oct 1688 (Courts of Quarter Sessions and Common Pleas of Bucks County PA ). See Research on Thomas Terry, by a Jim Roberts? appended to the Family Tree (owner: Marylynn16152), tree ; Family Trees at Ancestry.com: online at trees.ancestry.com/tree (accessed 12 Nov 2012) 3 Thomas son Jasper was defendant in a lawsuit because he was administrator of the estate of Thomas Terry late of New West Jersey planter, Bucks County PA Records of the Court of Quarter Sessions and Common Pleas, , p. 392; cited in Carol Dawn Croft, James Croft, his antecedents and descendants (Tacoma, Washington: C. D. Croft, c 1983), p. 136 (hereafter Croft Antecedants). 4 Charlotte D. Meldrum, compiler, Abstracts of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Land Records, (Westminister, Maryland: Family Line Publications, 1995), FHL US/CAN R2m, p. 44 (abstract no. 44, Witn: Thomas Terry, 12 Oct 1694) and p. 107 (abstract no. 193,..Thomas Terry s line, 15 Jan 1704) 5 John David Davis, main author, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deed records (Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, 1997), p. 409 (P. 386, 9 Mar 1722, line of..late Thomas Terry ). 6 The Burlington Court Book mentions Thom. Terry s father-in-law as Mordecai Bowden, but does not name his wife Research on Thomas Terry ms associated with (accessed 21 Apr 2012); Thomas likely wife was Sarah, the oldest daughter and the one closest in age to Thomas. Croft Antecedants, p. 136 also identifies Mordecai Bowden as Thomas father-in-law pointing to land records of the Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg, PA as the source (see note 11). 7 The Bowden line goes back another two generations: Mordecai s father was George Bowden (b. 30 Apr 1598) and his father was John Bowden of Somerset, England (b. 2 Oct 1569) married Elizabeth Servier [Family Trees at Ancestry.com: Family Tree (owner: Marylynn16152), tree , online at trees.ancestry.com/tree (accessed 12 Nov 2012). 8 History of Bucks County J. H. Battle, editor (Spartanburg, South Carolina, 1985), reprint of the 1887 edition, p See West New Jersey, 1684 at Landowners in the First and Second Tenths (Burlington) lists both Terry and Bowden (accessed 12 Mar 2012). 3 Terry 200 acres of land near his father-in-law Mordecai Bowden. He directed his surveyor, Thomas Holmes, to have surveyed unto Terry a piece on the back of Bowden s land. 10,11 Thomas and Sarah (Bowden) Terry had four known children, all probably born in Bucks: 12, i. JASPER TERRY, born abt 1675 of Bucks, Pennsylvania. He married Susannah of Bucks County ii. CLEMENT TERRY, born abt 1677 of Bucks, Pennsylvania. 4 iii. THOMAS TERRY, a cooper, was born abt 1679 of Bucks, Pennsylvania. 15 He married Mary of Bucks County. 5 iv. JOSHUA TERRY, b. abt 1681 in Bucks County. 16 Thomas origins are unknown (see essay Origins of Thomas Terry, b. abt 1653, in preparation). He and his posterity over the next 2-3 generations had strong associations with the Society of Friends (Quakers). ASSUMPTIONS It is probably a good assumption that virtually all Terrys in Bucks County up to the twentieth century are descended from this Thomas Terry, b. abt 1653 and this genealogical essay is based on that assumption. Exceptions to this assumption are noted in the essay with reasons for 10 Holmes map of Pennsylvania, with names of the first purchasers, beginning A. D (Samuel L. Smedley of Philadelphia, publisher) from History of Bucks County J. H. Battle, editor (Spartanburg, South Carolina, 1985), reprint of the 1887 edition, p See Figure Land Office of the Historical and Museum Commission, Harrisburg, PA, Survey Book D, vol. 67, pp. 168, 173, 183; cited also in Croft Antecedants. 12 Jasper was the eldest, but the birth order of the other three children is arbitrary. Davis, John David, main author, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deed records (Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, 1997), p. 145 (P. 91, 22 Oct 1714, Jasper and Susannah Terry, (eldest son and heir of Thomas Terry, yeoman, of Bristol Twp)). 13 Bucks is Bucks County, Pennsylvania. 14 Bucks County Pennsylvania Deed Book (T.L.C. Genealogy: Miami Beach, FL, 1991) p. 91; names Jasper, inheritor, (and wife Susanna) son of Thomas, who was granted land patent Jan 24, John David Davis, main author, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deed records (Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, 1997), p. 355 (P. 506, 5 Jun 1758, Bristol twp..line..of Thomas Terry ) and p. 144 (P.76, 25 Mar 1715, line of..thomas Terry..). A Thomas Terry bought 70 acres in Southampton Twp in 1714 and sold it again in 1730, Bucks County Deeds, vol. 15, pp. 207 and 210; cited in Croft Antecedants. 16 Charlotte D. Meldrum, compiler, Abstracts of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Land Records, (Westminister, Maryland: Family Line Publications, 1995), p. 120; abstract no. 300, Witn: Joshua Terry, 27 Dec 1706; FHL US/CAN R2m. 29deadpeople.com Page 3

exclusion from this family. In support of the assumption it should be noted that in the 1850 through the 1900 censuses of Bucks County, there is no Terry not born in Pennsylvania. Therefore, the known Terry families of Massachusetts (2), New York (L.I.), and Virginia did not migrate to Bucks County during this period. Bucks County map in Pennsylvania Figure 2. Land Claim of Mordecai Bowden (no. 20 on map) is on the Delaware River south of the Manor of Pennsbury; Thomas Terry s land (1683) was adjacent but does not appear on this map ca 1681 from J. H. Battle, History of Bucks County See also the Marfy Goodspeed blog: Goodspeed Histories. West New Jersey History and Genealogy. In the West New Jersey, 1684 article with the Burlington Court Book, pp as the source, Mordecai Bowden and Thomas Terry are listed as landowners in the First and Second Tenths 29deadpeople.com Page 4

It is also probably a good assumption that there were fewer migrating Terrys in the 17 th and 18 th centuries than in the 19 th. Bucks County was and is desirable farmland and was settled for the most part in the late 17 th and early 18 th century; people looking for tillable land after that time were more likely to go to the Western Reserve (Ohio) as did several of the Bucks County Terrys. There are Terrys in the Philadelphia County 19 th century censuses who were not born in Pennsylvania, but these are for the most part not migrating American Terrys, but Irish emigrants. This genealogy attempts to incorporate all known Terry evidence in Bucks County to date, but some of the family connections are therefore of necessity somewhat fanciful; effort has been made to identify these connections appropriately. Occasionally there is additional support for the assumption that all Bucks County Terrys are one extended family and note of this is made in the essay citations, e. g. the William Terry, b (56) had a son Charles (164) who married Margaret Worthington (these Terrys are not proven to be a descendants of Th. Terry 1653). Yet Henry B. Terry (a 2ggson of Th. Terry 1653) and a son of John Henry Davis Terry (127) had a grandson b that he named Alfred Worthington Terry. There is no other known explanation for the use of the family name Worthington other that these two Terry families were known to one another and therefore probably related. Generation Two 2. Jasper Terry (Thomas 1 ) was born abt ,19 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and died??. He married in 1710 in Bucks, Pennsylvania Susannah of Bucks, Pennsylvania. She was born abt Jasper and Susannah Terry probably had three children all born in Bucks County: (Burlington); (accessed 21 Apr 2012). 18 Approximated from date of land record. 19 Jasper Terry of Bristol Twp in Bucks, yeoman, and Susannah, his wife, greeting. William Penn, Esq., Proprietary and Governor, by patent dated 24 th day of the 1 st month 1701, granted to Thomas Terry late of the said place deceased, a certain parcel of about 100 acres of land in Bristol Twp, bounded by Edmond Lovett, vacant land, John Hiett, Anthony Burton, Phineas Pemberton, as by the patent recorded in Philadelphia in Patent Book A, Vol. 2, pp Now know that Jasper Terry (eldest son and heir of said Thomas Terry deceased) and said Susannah Terry (wife of the said Jasper Terry), for 72 pounds 10 shillings, sell to John Bown of Bucks, husbandman, the 100 acres of land. Signed Oct. 22, 1714; Jasper Terry (his mark) and said Susannah Terry; witness: William Baldwin, Edmond Lovett, Edmond Lovett, Jr. Recorded Apr. &, 1715, Bucks County Book 5, p John David Davis, main author, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deed records (Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, 1997), p. 145 (p. 91, 22 Oct 1714, Jasper and Susannah Terry, (eldest son and heir of Thomas Terry, yeoman, of Bristol Twp)). 29deadpeople.com Page 5

+ 6 i. THOMAS TERRY, born 1711, Makefield Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania; died 22 May 1792 Southampton, Bucks, Pennsylvania. 21,22 He married Jane Neeld. + 7 ii. JOHN TERRY 23, born 1713 Middletown, Bucks, Pennsylvania; died 1789 Wrightstown, Bucks, Pennsylvania. He married (1) Rachel Heston Lacey and (2) Sarah Walmsley. + 8 iii. JASPER TERRY, born abt 1715 Falls Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania. 24 He married Jul 1735 at New Jersey Mary Hart daughter of Thomas and Ester (Miles) Hart of Falls Township, Bucks County. She was born abt 1718 at Warminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania. He may have married a second time (to Mary Morrison) after moving to Botetourt, Virginia. 3. Clement Terry (Thomas 1 ) was born abt in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and died 1763 in Bristol Borough, Bucks. 27 He married Anne. Clement Terry and his wife had at least two children probably born in Bucks County: + 9 i. CLEMENT TERRY Jr. 28,29, a carpenter, b. abt 1700 in Bucks County and died after 1784 in Bristol Twp, Bucks. 30,31 He married 17 Jul 1721 at the Presbyterian Church, Abington, Philadelphia County Jane Johnson Terry A. McNealy, main author, Index to Bucks County references in the Pennsylvania Gazette , (Doylestown, Pennsylvania: Bucks County Genealogical Society, 1990), p. 256; FHL US/CAN B3m; 1765, May 2; Bucks County commissioner (15:157); 2 other citations from 1783, acting as an auditor of accounts. 22 Terry A. McNealy, main author, Index to Bucks County references in the Pennsylvania Gazette , (Doylestown, Pennsylvania: Bucks County Genealogical Society, 1990), p. 256; FHL US/CAN B3m; 1751, Dec. 31; Thomas Terry of Falls Twp., notice of horse found (9:306). 23 J. Brittingham and M. C. Williams, 1784 Transcript Tax of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (Jaminson, PA: Will-Britt Books, 1997), p. 52 ( Sr., Wrightstown Twp., household of 3). 24 The choice of Jasper b. abt 1675 as Jasper Terry s father is arbitrary ( he could as well be son of Clement, Thomas, or Joshua) as is his assignment to the Thomas Terry 1653 lineage. The name Jasper is unusual and does not occur in any of the other American Terry genealogies of the time period except the Virginia Terrys and then only after this Jasper had moved there with his in-laws, the Harts. Considering naming patterns of the time, a father naming his son Jasper after himself is slightly more likely than naming him Jasper after a brother. 25 New Jersey, Marriage Records , New Jersey State Archives, online at Ancestry.com (accessed 23 Mar 2012); for Mary Hart s parentage see contribution by jspruell@earthlink.net (accessed 23 Mar 2012). 26 A Clement Terry pled not guilty to a charge 13 Sep 1709 and served on a jury 11 Jun 1730, Bucks County PA Records of the Court of Quarter Sessions and Common Pleas, , pp. 429, There are two inventories and letters of administration for two Clement Terrys (Bristol Twp. and Bristol Borough); the one who lived in Bristol Borough died in 1763 and was married to Anne; Croft Antecedants p. 138, footnote deadpeople.com Page 6

10 ii. ABRAHAM TERRY of Bucks County. 33 TERRYS OF BUCKS July 25, 2014 Generation Three 6. Thomas John Terry (Jasper 2 Thomas 1 ) 34 was born abt 1711 in Makefield Township, Bucks and died May 1792 at Southampton, Bucks. He married Mar 1736 at Fallsington, Bucks Jane Neeld daughter of John and Elizabeth Neeld. 9 7. John Terry (Jasper 2 Thomas 1 ) 51 was born 1713 at Middletown, Bucks and died at Wrightstown, Bucks. He married 53 (1) 31 Mar 1738 at Wrightstown, Bucks Rachel Heston Lacey daughter of John and Rachel (Heston) Lacey. 54 She was born 2 Jan 1717 at Buckingham, Bucks and died 1750 at Wrightstown, Bucks. She married 56 (2) 5 Dec 1798 at Wrightstown, Bucks Benjamin Warner of Muncy, Lycoming, Pennsylvania. 57 John Terry was Bucks County Commissioner in Croft Antecedants, p. 140; cites Byberry Preparatory Meeting of Friends Records; Note: this author has been unable to verify this source (only known source of this title is the Swarthmore (PA) Friends Library). 51 T. 10 John Terry likely made the move to Wrightstown from Middletown at the time of his marriage to Rachel in 1838 as the Terrys are not listed among the founding families of Wrightstown although the Hestons and Laceys are listed. 59 John and Rachel (Lacey) Terry had two children: i. 11 of Falls Township, Bucks County. She was born abt 1718 at Warminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania. It is likely that Jasper and Mary followed her father south to Virginia; no more is discovered of them in Bucks County. 66,67 Jasper and Mary (Hart) Terry had a son: 20 i. JOSEPH TERRY, born abt 1737 of Bucks, Pennsylvania. 68,69,70 9. Clement Terry Jr. (Clement 2 Thomas 1 ) born abt 1700 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania; died after 1784 of Lower Makefield Twp, Bucks. 71 He married 17 Jul 1721 at the Presbyterian Church, Abington, Philadelphia County Jane Johnson contribution by jspruell@earthlink.net (accessed 23 Mar 2012). 66 There are references to Jasper Terry working in Orange County, Virginia as early as 1739 and working with his brothers-in-law Aron Hart and Miles Hart in Virginia in 1753 (see JSpruell contribution at by jspruell@earthlink.net (accessed 23 Mar 2012)) 67 Jasper is such an unusual name for the Americas, this author thinks it is highly likely that the Jasper married to Mary Hart is the same as the one who married to Mary Morrison and who fathered Josiah Terry in 1755 in Virginia (see Family Trees at Ancestry.com: Michelle Earnhart s Family Tree (owner: earnhartm), tree online at trees.ancestry.com/tree (accessed 9 Feb 2013). No marriage has been found for Jasper/Mary Morrison and no deathdate for Mary Hart Terry either; the ages of the two Jaspers are estimated to be the same and both were in Virginia at the same time. Mary Hart Terry could have died in childbirth, although we have no record. This would perhaps explain how Jasper could leave Joseph with his newly married brother John to dash off to Virginia with his in-laws. 68 John Terry s 1788 Will: Acknowledges the presence of Joseph Terry, a nephew (who ran John s farm). We have a problem here if Joseph really was a nephew, then he must be Jasper s son or father Jasper (b. 1675) must have had another child we don t know about, because if Joseph were Thomas s son and her brother, Susanna would surely have mentioned it in her will (see Susanna s Will) as she was so scrupulous about naming all descendants. Croft Antecedants indicates that nephew is wrong, and Joseph is actually David Terry s son (Thomas grandson, 34, b. 1774); this suggestion is also untenable as he would have been an infant when then tax rolls of the 1770 s describe him as a single man on the John Terry farm. 69 Joseph also appears in the tax rolls living with uncle John as discussed in Croft Antecedants, p. 138, 140 and Appendix VIII, Terry Family Tax Records , pp T.
