In a biographical account of the ninetieth anniversary of the birth of James Prall⁸ Chamberlin [Lewis⁷ ⁶ ⁵] by his son-in-law, Theodore Bellis, on 30 Dec 1915, he stated of his great-grandparents Lewis & Lucretia: Placing all their worldly goods in a cart, and with a good, fat black horse, they found their way over Sourland Mountain and settled in Amwell Valley, along Mallard's Creek [about ]. When Lewis died in 1772, he owned 350 acres of good land, one-half of it is heavily timbered. It is part of five farms at the present time. This would place his farm in Amwell Township, not far from Flemington, on Mallard's Creek. November 2, 2000 Page 2 of 6

3 On 14 Sep 1742, Henry Farnsworth deeded land to Lewis Chamberlin of Amwell for 345. (Deed formerly in possession of Theodore Bellis.) He witnessed the deed from his brother John and wife Hannah, and his mother Rebecca to Henry Green on 21 May (See John⁵ Chamberlin, LN 216.) He joined the Hopewell Baptist Church, 25 Oct 1747 and his death is recorded in the church records in May His wife Lucretia joined the same church 5 Aug Lewis Chamberlin, his mother Rebecca Chamberlin, and his cousin William⁴ Chamberlin [William³, John²] were listed as debtors to the estate of George Williams, clothier, whose will was dated 1 Nov 1743, proved 10 Apr The list of debtors was given in the accounting of the estate on 12 June (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 30, P. 530; Liber D, P. 174.) On 15 Apr 1755, Lewis Chamberlin, as witness, signed a deed from Christian Koul to his brother Richard Chamberlin, of Amwell, for land in Amwell. On 21 Apr 1768, Lewis Chamberlin of Amwell, was nominated by Governor Franklin to be commissioned a Justice of the Peace. Lewis Chamberlin and Jacob Mattison took inventory of the estate of John Williamson of Amwell, on 26 Aug 1769 (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 33, P. 482, Liber 14, P. 164, Liber 15, P. 499). Lewis Chamberlin and Jacob Mathison took inventory of the estate of William Kirkpatrick of Hunterdon Co., NJ, on 22 Sep 1769 (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 33, P. 235, Liber 14, P. 423). On 27 Mar 1770, His excellency laid before the board, a petition from John Fox and another from John Throckmorton, both of Amwell in the County of Hunterdon, complaining of sundry instances of misbehavior in Lewis Chamberlain, Esquire, one of the justices of the peace in said county, and praying relief from sundry oppressions they have suffered from the judgements of said Lewis Chamberlain. Whereupon his excellency with the advice of the council was pleased to order the deputy secretary to give notice to the said Lewis Chamberlain to appear before the Governor in Council on Wednesday on the 9th of May next to answer the said complaint. (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 18, P. 171.) On 9 May 1770, The board taking into consideration the complaints of John Fox and John Throckmorton exhibited on the 27th day of March last against Lewis Chamberlain, Esquire, one of the justices of the peace in the county of Hunterdon, and the parties being called in and fully heard, the board were unanimously of opinion that the said complaints were by no means supported, and that it did not appear the said justice had acted in anywise inconsistent with his duty as a magistrate in the matters complained of. (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 18, P. 176.) Lewis Chamberlin contributed 0:17:4 to the Neshanic Church and its builders in (Somerset County, New Jersey, Historical Quarterly, Vol. 7, P. 173.)
