1 Descendants of David Leist Home Page: This is a work in progress and there are probably errors of fact or deduction, despite my attempt to be as accurate as possible. Please do your own research and do not copy my biographies into your own files. The writing and research in this file represents many hours of work, but I m sharing it to help other genealogists just as many people have helped me. If you find mistakes, please let me know and provide a source for your correction. I do not knowingly include living persons in my working file. E- mail: collectornuts at aol.com Generation No DAVID 1 LEIST was born Abt in NJ? PA?, and died Bef in prob. Northumberland Co, PA. Notes for DAVID LEIST: From Sue Parsons (Leist Family, Rootsweb): Period of David List of Tewksbury, Hunterdon Co., NJ issued to James Cole, also of Tewksbury. A James Cole was the executor of the estate of Robert Simson of Tewksbury on 25 Sep In the mortgage deed, drawn in Oct 1767, David List is described as a mason. The deed was recorded in March 1769 [Vol I, Hunterdon County Mortgages, , p90]. Mention of this mortgage was found in the index at the Hunterdon County Historical Society Library in Flemington and the actual deed was copied in the Hunterdon County Courthouse. By 1768, David was in Penns Twp, Northumberland Co, PA (formed 1772). Research note: Tax records for Penns Twp are supposed to be in the Snyder Co. Courthouse, Middleburg, PA. Those records need to be located and transcribed for more information about the Leist family in Penns Twp. At this point, only circumstantial evidence points to the names of David's children. David Leist was a resident of Penn's Twp in 1768 and 1776 (History of that Part of the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys..., Volume 2, edited by Franklin Ellis, Austin N. Hungerford, p. 1501) Children of DAVID LEIST are: 2. i. UNKNOWN 2 LEIST, b. Abt. 1753, NJ?. 3. ii. ANDREW LEIST, b. November 30, 1755, New Germantown, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey; d. November 11, 1821, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH, age 62, interred Zion Cemetery. iii. SAMUEL LEIST, b. Abt. 1757, NJ?; d. Abt. 1849, Maybe Fairfield Co, OH, interred Dutch Hollow Cemetery; m. And if there was a Samuel Leist, in the Revolutionary War, he is most certainly Andrew's sibling (source: Sue Parsons) Generation No UNKNOWN 2 LEIST (DAVID 1 ) was born Abt in NJ?. The father of Maria Elizabeth Leist is presumed to be a son of David Leist, but no proof has been found. Child of UNKNOWN LEIST is: 4. i. MARIA ELIZABETH "MARY ELIZA" 3 LEIST, b. Abt. 1775, PA prob. Northumberland Co; d. January 01, 1867, Whiteside Co, IL, interred Genesee Grove Central Cemetery, Whiteside Co, IL. 3. ANDREW 2 LEIST (DAVID 1 ) was born November 30, 1755 in New Germantown, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey 1,2, and died November 11, 1821 in Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH, age 62, interred Zion Cemetery 3. He married ELIZABETH LANDMAN November 10, 1776 in PA 4. She was born July 25, 1757 in Dauphin Co, PA 5, and died September 10, 1824 in Circleville, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH, interred Zion Cemetery 6.

2 Notes for ANDREW LEIST: Leist and Allied Families (by Sue Parsons, Ancestry.com, updated 18 Jan 2003) has a welldocumented discussion of this family. Sue believes Andrew was born in Hunterdon Co, NJ which was formed in Hunterdon County sits on the far western part of northern New Jersey, adjacent to Pennsylvania. Donald Leist Jr., however, wrote that Andrew was born in New Garrison Twp, Garrison Neck in Salem Co, NJ (Leist, 2005, p. 259). According to Betty Lou Wolford (2005), Andrew served in the Revolutionary War. She wrote that he and his family moved to Ohio in Andrew was a Revolutionary War soldier; Donald Leist, Jr. wrote (2005) that during the war, Andrew spelled his name Andreas. He owned 337 acres of land in Penns Twp, Northumberland Co, PA until 1800, when he sold the farm and moved to Pickaway Co, OH near Circleville. Leist also wrote that the town of Middleburg, PA is located on what was the Andrew Leist farm. The birth dates of Andrew and Elizabeth's children are from The Leist Family bible records on the Ross Co, OH web site, contributed by Cindy Duhamel. In 2007, M.L. Cook visited the Pickaway Co. OH Historical and Genealogical Society in Circleville, and confirmed Andrew's children listed in a genealogy written by George Amos Leist (22 May 1967). Andrew and Elizabeth were buried in Old Zion Cemetery, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH, located 3 miles east on Road 22. Northumberland Co, PA was formed in From Sue Parsons: Before arriving in Ohio about 1807, Andrew owned vast acreage in Pennsylvania, around Middlesburg, now Union Co, before Snyder and Northumberland Co's. Most of the land was in Penns Twp. In 1800 the town of Middleburg, PA was established and is on the land once owned by Andrew. Middleburg was selected as the county seat when Snyder Co was formed in It was laid out in 1800 on land belonging to John Swineford. It was formerly called Swinefordtown. There were 105 lots, they were sold subject to a ground rent of one dollar per year. From Sue Parsons: Andrew served in the Revolutionary War. His military service extended to almost ten years. Some believe that Andrew could have enlisted twice. Fort Augusta was established at Sunbury, PA in Soldiers were stationed there to protect the settlers from the Indians. It is possible that Andrew enlisted through this stockade as the records show he enlisted from Northumberland Co, PA. He first enlisted in Jacob Bard's Militia soon after 19 Apr Then he is found in John Moll's Company, as a Capt. of the 3rd Co., 1st Battalion of the Northumberland Co Militia under the command of Lt. Col. Peter Hosterman. From Sue Parsons: In 1794 the farmers of PA opposed a tax that the government levied against the sale of whiskey. This was the beginning of the Whiskey Rebellion. There was violence and open defiance by many of the farmers and law and order became a critical factor. General George Washington dispatched General Lee to Pa to bring law and order to the area. While waiting for his arrival, the Northumberland Militia under the command of Capt. Andrew Leist, 2nd Battalion, 5th Co., kept peace while a company from Lancaster Co, PA dispersed the rioters at the point of the bayonet. Andrew Leist listed as a Pvt in Northumberland Co, Militia. Listed in Roster of "Soldiers who received Depreciations Pay" as per cancelled certificates on file in the Division of Public Records. Index to wills, books A and B, p334 "Ohio Genealogical Quarterly" Pickaway County Andrew's Will, copied verbatim: suggests that Andrew gave all of his children [except Samuel who would have been deceased at the time of Andrew's death] land and monies at the time of their marriages; but he gave each of them $1.00 at the time of his death. He left all of his entire estate to his wife Elizabeth, to be equally divided among the children at her death. He appointed his son Jacob Leist as executor (source: Sue Parsons, Leist Family, 2016 on Rootsweb). Need to check this reference: Dr. Charles A. 3 A 2008 article in the "Circleville Herald" online ( states that Andrew was born in Berks Co, PA and he served in the War for Independence for nearly ten years. "He married Elizabeth Landman in 1776 in Pennsylvania. During the Whisky Rebellion the family became dissatisfied with their surroundings and migrated to Washington Township, Pickaway." Children of ANDREW LEIST and ELIZABETH LANDMAN are: 5. i. DAVID 3 LEIST, b. August 16, 1777, Northumberland Co, PA; d. January 29, 1840, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH, interred Zion Cemetery. ii. Northumberland Co, and died January 01, 1867 in Whiteside Co, IL, interred Genesee Grove Central Cemetery, Whiteside Co, IL 9. She married (1) BENJAMIN YOTTER Abt in Pennsylvania, prob. Northumberland County, son of MELCHIOR YODER and ANNA GODSHALK. He was born 1773 in Philadelphia Co, PA, and died November 15, 1801 in Penn, Snyder, Northumberland Co, PA, age 28. She married (2) JOHN YEAGER Abt in Prob. Pickaway Co, OH. He was born October 05, 1779 in PA prob. Northumberland County, and died February 13, 1856 in Vinton Co, OH, age 76, interred Old Hamden Cemetery, Vinton Co, OH. Notes for MARIA ELIZABETH "MARY ELIZA" LEIST: Mary E. List belongs somewhere in the Leist family, but I have not yet identified her parents. She may be the daughter of a sibling or cousin of Andrew Leist. Reasons for placing her in this Leist family are: 1. Mary E. was married to Benjamin Yotter, brother of Catherine Yoder, who married Andrew Leist, Jr - proof was found in the death certificate of Sarah Leist Kurtz. It state her parents were Andrew Leist and Catherine Yutter. 2. Her husband, Benjamin, was shown on the 1800 census in Northumberland Co, PA and the David Leist family was also there. 3. Andrew Leist, Jr. was appointed guardian of her 3 minor children in 1815 in Pickaway County, Ohio. 4. Some time after her first husband's death in 1801, she moved from PA to Pickaway Co, OH along with the Leist and Yeager families. 5. Family genealogy passed down to me showed her name as Mary Eliza List. The Leist family is thought to have arrived around in Pickaway Co, OH. After Mary Eliza was widowed, she lived in the same town as her husband's father and several brothers, but it's not known with whom she lived. In 1804, Matthias 3

4 Schoch was named guardian of her three minor children in PA; he died in Mary Eliza married John Yeager in 1808, when her three children were still very young. Andrew Leist was appointed by a bond dated 5 Oct 1815 as guardian for Melcher, Catherine and Elizabeth Yodder, children of Benjamin Yoder, brother of Melchior Yotter/Yoder ( A biography of John Yager states they moved to Ohio in According to land records located by M.L. Cook in Pickaway County, Ohio (5 July 2007), Melchior Yotter purchased 25 acres of land for $350 from John Yeager and his wife Maria Elizabeth on 10 April He purchased another 25 acres of land for $400 on 29 August These land records seem to indicate that John Yeager moved his family to Vinton Co. OH in about John Yeager and his wife were among the members of an early church in Clinton Twp, Vinton Co, OH. Other early members included Patrick and Elizabeth [Yotter] Reed, and several of the Salts family. John donated land for the cemetery north of Hamden, known as Yeager Cemetery where Patrick Reed is buried census, Northumberland Co, PA: John Yeager was listed with 5 males under 16. Could one of these be the John Yeager who later married Mary E. Leist in Pickaway County? If so, this is another link to the Andrew Leist family listed on the same page as John Yeager in The Leist and Yeager families may have traveled to Pickaway County together census - John Yeager not yet found 1800 census, Penns Twp, Northumberland Co, PA: Benjamin Youter (age 26-44). His presumed wife (age 16-25) and a male under 10 (Melchoir) were listed with him census - not found 1820 census, Bloomfield, Jackson Co, Ohio: John Yeager (age 26-45) with 1 boy under 10, 3 boys age and 3 girls (under 10), and 1 female (age 26-44). There were a total of 9 persons in the household census, Clinton, Jackson, Ohio: John Yeager (age 50-59) with 1 boy (age 10-14), 1 boy (age 15-19), 1 girl (age 5-9), 1 girl (age 10-14), 1 girl (age 15-19), and a woman (age 50-59). A total of 7 persons were listed in the household. Next door was John Yeager's son, George (age 20-30) and his presumed wife (age 15-20) with no children census - not yet found 1850 census, Clinton Twp, Vinton Co, OH: John (70) and Mary E. (74) Yeager. His occupation was farmer census, Genesee Grove, Whiteside Co, IL: Elisia (84) lived with her son John and family Illinois state census, Genesee, Whiteside County: Mary E. Yager with 7 in the household. Names of household members are not given. She was near John D. Yager. Notes for BENJAMIN YOTTER: Letters of Administration on his estate were granted to Mary Yoter and John Yoter on 15 Nov On 30 Nov 1804 the Orphans Court appointed Mathias Schoch guardian for the young children (Yoder Newsletter cites Probate and Orphans Court Records of Snyder Co, PA, , Charles A. Fisher, Clearfield Co, Baltimore, 1991, p. 54) census, Montgomery Co, PA (formerly Philadelphia Co): Melcher Yoder was listed with 3 males 16 and up. It is presumed one of these was Benjamin since he did not marry until about Tax records are needed for Benjamin to determine when he moved to Northumberland Co census, Penns Twp, Northumberland Co [now Snyder], PA: He is listed as Benjamin Youter (age 26-44). His presumed wife (age 16-25) and a male under 10 (Melchoir) were listed with him. Notes for JOHN YEAGER: John Yeager may be the son or grandson of Christian Yeager, the immigrant from Germany who lived in Georgetown (Dalmatia), Pa. A biography of his son, John Yager, states that the elder John moved from PA to Pickaway Co, OH in 1812 (Bent, 1877). Abstract of John Yeager's Will, Clinton Twp, Jackson Co, OH "Yeager, John of Clinton Township - dated ; recorded Wife, Mary Eliza. $1.00 to Estate of George Yeager, dec'd. $1.00 to Estate of Christian Yeager, Dec'd. $1.00 to Heirs of Sophia Trip, only heirs of her body. He married CATHERINE STIMLING SPADE 1797 in Prob. PA. She was born October 12, 1777 in Berks Co, PA 10, and died July 26, 1843 in Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH 10. Notes for DAVID LEIST: This is probably the David Leist who located in what would become Pickaway Co. Ohio, probably along with his parents and several siblings, as early as 1804 (History of Pickaway Co, OH). His brother Andrew moved to the same area in about Harold Leist wrote in 2005 that David's headstone and that of his wife are in good condition but have fallen. David was a stone mason, and he laid the foundation for the courthouse in Circleville, Ohio, which was still standing in 2007 when the author visited the area. At least three of his sons moved to Henry Co, OH before According to a biography published in 2005, David was a Captain in the War of 1812; the company in which he served is listed in the roster of Ohio Soldiers of Betty Lou Wolford (2005) wrote that David served as Washington Township Commissioner in 1825, 1830, and On 20 Apr 1817, David Leist of Pickaway Co, OH and his wife Catherine Stimling appointed John Leist to recover sums of money due to Catherine from George and Daniel Stimley/Stimling out of the estate of Daniel Stimely/Stimling Sr. "1802 Residents of Swinefordstown (Now Middleburg in Snyder County):..., David Leist,..., Martin Smith cooper, Robert Smith, George Spade, David Spade,George Swinefore,..." p Annals of Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania Collated by John Blair Linn, Harrisburg, Pa., Lane S. There were no other Leist families in Northumberland Co, PA. Where was David's father, Andrew Leist in 1800? David Leist lived in Middleburg or Swinefordstown (source: Snyder County Annals, Vol. 1, compiled by Geo. W. Wagensseller, 1919) census - not yet found 1820 census, Washington, Pickaway Co, OH: David Leist (age 26-44) with 8 males under 25 and 4 females. Total of 5 white persons in the household. Notes for CATHERINE STIMLING SPADE: There is some confusion about her maiden name but it appears her first husband was David Spade. Children of DAVID LEIST and CATHERINE SPADE are: 21. i. WILLIAM 4 LEIST, b. April 03, 1800, Northumberland Co, PA; d. April 21, 1862, Liberty Twp, Henry Co, OH. 22. ii. DAVID A. LEIST, JR., b. GIRL LEIST, b. Bet ANDREW 3 LEIST, JR. (ANDREW 2, DAVID 1 ) was born October 04, 1782 in Northumberland Co or Berks Co, PA, and died March 24, 1851 in Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH age 68y 5m 20d 11. He married CATHARINE YOTTER Abt in Prob. Northumberland Co, PA, daughter of MELCHIOR YODER and ANNA GODSHALK. She was born May 19, 1783 in Limerick Township, Montgomery Co, PA 12, and died November 10, 1866 in Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH 13. Notes for ANDREW LEIST, JR.: If his son Jacob was born in Ohio, this means they arrived prior to 1808 in Pickaway Co, OH. Harold Leist states that he arrived in Ohio about 1807, but an article in the online Yoder Newsletter - Non Amish, shows they were among the first settlers in Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH in early Andrew was appointed by a bond dated 5 Oct 1815 as guardian for Melcher, Catherine and Elizabeth Yodder, children of Benjamin Yoder, brother of Melchior Yetter/Yoder ( Andrew's wife, Catherine Yotter Leist was the children's aunt and sister of Benjamin Yotter. I need to locate a marriage record for Andrew Leist and Catherine Yotter (note that Harold Leist shows her as Catherine Row, but I believe that is an error. His son married a Catherine Row). In 1832, Andrew was administrator of his brother-in-law Melchior Yotter's estate. According to Sue Parsons' records, Andrew's will was written 24 Mar 1849 and probated 26 Apr It mentions his wife Catherine, sons Amos, John, Jacob, grandson Reuben Row, and daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Catherine and the children of Susan census, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH: Andrew List (26-45) with 2 males under 10, 2 males age 10-15, 1 male (19-26) and 3 males (26-45). This record shows 2 people in agriculture and 2 in manufacturing. There are at least 5 persons listed who are unidentified census, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH: Andrew Leist with 2 boys (10-15), 1 boy (15-20), 2 men (20-30), 2 girls (5-10), 2 girls (10-15), 1 girl (15-20), 1 woman (20-30) and his presumed wife (age 40-50) census, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH: Andrew Leist (age 50-60) with 3 boys, 4 girls, and his presumed wife (age 50-60). Other Leists on the same page were: Henry G. (20-30), William (30-40), David (30-40), Joseph (20-30), Jacob (30-40), and Andrew Leist, Jr. (20-30) census, Washington Twp, Pickaway Co, OH: Andrew Leist (63), Catherine Leist (62), and Deliah Moore (19). Their property was valued at $5860 and Andrew's occupation was laborer. Catherine could not read or write; I assume that Deliah was a servant. This record shows that Andrew was born about off 5 years from his reported birth. Since Andrew and Catherine lived next door to Amos A. Leist and family, I assume they are his parents. Notes for CATHARINE YOTTER: Catherine's name is also rendered as Catherine Yoder or Yodder. A book on the Leist family located at the Pickaway Co. Genealogy and History Society shows that Andrew's wife was Catherine Row, daughter of Peter Row, who is buried in St. Paul's Churchyard Cemetery. Yotter family tradition and records, however, state Andrew married Catherine Yotter. Catherine's daughter married Christopher Hufford and a book on the Hufford family shows that Andrew Leist, Jr. was married to Catherine Leist. The proof of Andrew's wife was found on the death certificate of Sarah Leist Kurtz. It state her parents were Andrew Leist and Catherine Yutter. Yoder Lineage - Other than Amish, Part Four, MELCHIOR YODER LINE- Part FOUR, Compiled by the Yoder Newsletter ( Expanded and Presented by Donald G. Honeywell, July 2008 M7- Catherine Yotter born 19 May m. before 1804 in Ohio to Andrew LEIST, Jr. (born 4 October 1782 in Berks County, PA). Andrew and Catherine Leist were among the first settlers of Washington Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, having settled in Section 23 shortly after Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church was the first church organized in Washington Township in 1808 or The first burying ground in the township was the Zion's Church graveyard, laid out as early as 1809, and the first burial was a child of Andrew and Catherine Leist. A guardian's bond, dated 5 October 1815, appointed Andrew Leist, Jr., "guardian for Melcher Yodder a minor upwards of 14 years of age and Catherine Yodder and Elizabeth Yodder, minors upwards of 12 years of age;" children of Benjamin Yoder (M3) brother of Mechoir. In 1832, 6

7 Andrew was the administrator of the estate of his brother-in-law, Mechoir Yotter, M5. March 18, 1918, Plattsmouth, Cass Co, NE, interred Oak Hill Cemetery, Plattsmouth, NE. 14. ELIZABETH 4 YOTTER (MARIA ELIZABETH "MARY ELIZA" 3 LEIST, UNKNOWN 2, DAVID 1 ) was born June 01, 1802 in PA probably Northumberland Co, and died August 07, 1880 in Flora, Clay Co, IL, interred Elmwood Cemetery, Flora, IL. She married PATRICK REED Abt in Ohio, son of DOWNEY REED and AILSE DEHART. He was born August 11, 1798 in Rockbridge Co, VA or Greenbrier Co, WV, and died August 04, 1862 in Hamden, Vinton Co, Ohio age , interred Yeager Cemetery 33. Notes for ELIZABETH YOTTER: Elizabeth was born in PA after the death of her father. When she was 3-5 years of age, her mother moved to Pickaway County, OH. She was raised and educated by her mother and step-father, and could read both English and German. Her son, A.D. Reed, claimed that her parents came to America from Germany in steerage, and he called her a "little Dutch girl." In that time period, Germans were often called "Deutch." However, it seems almost certain that her grandparents were the ones who immigrated to America. A.D. Reed said she had worked in Philadelphia as a kitchen girl to pay her passage; I believe her mother may have worked in Philadelphia County, PA before marriage. In about 1871, she went to Flora, Illinois with her son Ene and his wife Martha. This was where her daughter Catherine was living. Notes for PATRICK REED: A.D. Reed wrote that his father was born in Greenbrier Co, WV, as the family was moving west. Others believe Patrick grew up in Virginia, and later came to southeastern Ohio where he bought 160 acres a half-mile north of the present village of Hamden, just south of Downey Reed's property. In about 1800 he lived in Rockbridge Co, VA. Patrick was listed on the 1806 tax list in Gallia Co, OH. A.D. Reed wrote in a letter published in the Wellston Telegram in 1936 that his father went to Ohio in 1818, and that he lived for a time on a farm outside of Wilkesville, Vinton Co, OH. At that time the county was sparsely settled, and Chillicothe was a two-day trip to the west on the Scioto River where banking was done. His first home there was a 2 story hewn log house and a one-story kitchen with a large porch on two sides, and weatherboards on the sides. He built a mill on the bank of the Little Raccoon creek, near the present iron bridge. The mill operated for 40 years. The post office, known as Reed's Mill, continued until enough families lived in Hamden to move the post office there. Until the railroads came, the weekly mail was carried by the postboy from Jackson and Athens (source: The Wellston Telegram, Wellston, Ohio). 12
