U pward in Wo rship I n ward i n Discipleship Outward i n Evangelism Tidings Official Organ of the West Texas District Council of the Assemblies of God October, 2009 PUBLISHED MONTHLY Volume LXVII Number 10 Superintendent s Report by Robert G. Slaton AFFIRMING LEADERSHIP Napoleon s genius had been attributed to many things, but, above all, he was a superb natural leader of men. Like any wise leader he was aware that his own success would have been nothing had his men not been willing, even eager, to follow him. Obviously he could not know and personally inspire every man in his vast army, therefore he devised a simple technique for circumventing this difficulty. Before visiting a regiment he would call the colonel aside and ask for the name of a soldier who had served well in previous campaigns, but who had not been given the credit he deserved. The colonel would indicate such a man. Napoleon would then learn everything about him, where he was born, the names of his family, his exploits in battle, etc. Later, upon passing this man while reviewing the troops, and at a signal from the colonel, Napoleon would stop, single out the man, greet him warmly, ask about his family, compliment him on his bravery and loyalty, reminisce about old campaigns, then pin a medal on the grateful soldier. The gesture worked. After the review, the other soldiers would remark, You see, he knows us--he remembers. He knows our families. He knows we have served. Paul was a wise leader who knew how to handle difficult situations. In 1 Corinthians 1:4-10, He approached a very difficult problem in the church. There were a number of issues that had to be dealt with. This was a defiled church some members had committed sexual immorality and drunkenness. It was a divided church at least four groups competed for leadership. It was a disgraced church Its problems became known throughout the community. Before he addressed the problem areas, he talked about the good things. John Maxwell calls this the 101% principle find 1percent that you can affirm, and give it 100 percent of your of your attention. Paul showed appreciation for the things that were good about the church. They were enriched by God. The Greek word enriched gives us our English word plutocrat a very wealthy person. God s grace had blessed the Corinthians with the gift of salvation. Salvation brings spiritual riches in this life and in the life to come. The next area where the Corinthians were enriched was the hope of the return of Jesus Christ. Believers who are looking for the soon return of Jesus Christ will endeavor to keep their lives above reproach. They will also be faithful in serving Christ while waiting for His appearing. Let us as leaders remember that affirmation and appreciation should precede confrontation. Good leaders look for the good in people and affirm it. Only then do they address the problem. The Duke of Wellington, the British military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, was not an easy man to serve under. He was brilliant, demanding, and not one to shower his subordinates with compliments. Yet even Wellington realized that his methods left something to be desired. In his old age a young lady asked him what, if anything, he would do differently if he had his life to live over again. Wellington thought for a moment, and then replied. I d give more praise, he said.

3 Secretary-Treasurer & Director of Church Ministries Glenn R. Beaver Secretary-Treasurer NATIONAL AGED MINISTERS ASSISTANCE DAY November 15, 2009 The following article is from the General Council Aged Ministers Assistance website. Aged Ministers Assistance is currently helping 339 ministers and their widows over 65 whose monthly income from Social Security and other sources is less than $1362 for a couple and $908 for singles and widows. AMA monthly checks fill in the gap between what they are receiving and those amounts. In the words of a grateful recipient, It makes the difference between not enough and just enough. AMA also sends checks to help with emergency medical needs. Although AMA has been in existence since 1933, there are still aged ministers needing assistance who are not aware of AMA. Last year we added to our list of recipients a couple, both 85, who had been living on less than $200 a month. Now their Social Security check and AMA check add up to $1362 per month. What a difference in their daily lives this ministry is making! You qualify for Emergency Medical Assistance if you are ONE of the following: Official AG minister with 10 years of ministry who is at least 65 years old. Widow of an official AG minister with 10 years of ministry who is at least 60 years old. An official AG minister who is disabled, of any age. You qualify for Monthly Assistance if you are ONE of the above AND your total monthly income is less than $1,362 a month (couple) or $908 (single). Please contact us for more information or to let us help you discover if you qualify for Aged Ministers Assistance. Call (417) , ext. 2184, or ama@ag.org, or write to AMA, 1445 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO Visit our Web site: to download an application. Please take November 15 or another Sunday to highlight this worthy ministry and give your congregation an opportunity to respond in giving an offering. Take advantage of the 5 minute video on the AMA website and share it with your church family. CREDENTIAL APPLICATIONS DEADLINE DECEMBER 31, 2009 All those who have met the qualifications for credentials and wish to apply must return the application to the district office by December 31. 6 ... People to People... E.R. FOSTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The E.R. Foster Memorial Scholarship was founded in Bro. Foster pastored Amarillo First Assembly for 38 years and during those years was a member of the Board of Regents and the Board of Directors of Southwestern. His love for Southwestern was evidenced in his generous support throughout his lifetime. When the old cafeteria building was renovated it was dedicated as the Foster Music Center in honor of Bro. Foster who was a great music man and lover of Christian music. He also had a great love for young people entering the ministry. The E.R. Foster Memorial Scholarship is designed to make funds available for students who are studying for the mission field or other ministry areas. You can give to this fund by contributing to the Southwestern Foundation, 1200 Sycamore, Waxahachie, TX Write E.R. Memorial Scholarship in the memo line of the check.
