1 Sauls-Bridges American Legion Post 13 News Volume 53, Issue 7 SEPTEMBER 2017 AMICABLE - THE AMERICAN LEGION IS NAMED IN THE TOP 10 In a recent Democrat Chronicle article, the American Legion is named as one of the top 10 venues in the area for musical events!! This wood-paneled dance hall is one of the most welcoming and inivting places in town. The live music acts are all over the map at any given time, on any given evening -- eccentric folk music by visiting artist Jim White, soul-pop tunes by local party-miesters Crooked Shooz, big band music by the Swing Band, you name it. The acoustics are some of the best in town, and the AC unit keeps things icy. Full bar, Cheap prices, Friendly staff. There s a coffee shop, Black Dog Café, sharing the same building. What s not to like? This site has seen a wide variety of music and an ongoing list of known musicians who have honored the hall for many years. Construction of the building initially started in 1925: this within itself is a story. Two large fireplaces still stand tall at each side of the dance floor which was the source of heat at that time. The dance floor has been replaced a time or two-- Can anyone image the number of steps made over the decades of dancing and other uses the hall has experienced? Popularity, convienece and security - the Legion is known as a place large and small. Business meetings, political rallies, class reunions, office parties, weddings, birthday receptions, memorial services, and regular church services to name a few uses of the hall. An array of music is heard at the hall each week. Our thanks to the public, the Legion is seldom quiet. Hardly a night goes by when the hall is silent and the atmosphere is not pleasant. -Charles LeCroy ACKNOWLEDGING AN OUTSTANDING MAN JAMES BOYNTON The members of Post 13 would like to acknowledge an outstanding man that is always at the Hall making the Post look great! James has been with us for 17 years and still going. He is not a veteran but has always been associated with veterans most of his life. James has a personality and integrity to do a good job whatever the task. Dependibility is just one of his many traits, that marks him as a can-do character. He continues to hold a position in the Post and makes sure the inside of our 92 year old Hall is presentable for the next venue. He has a passion for our remarkable dance floors and goes to extra effort to ensure it is ready. Thanks to James, cleanliness is an area that continues to receive compliments. THANK YOU JAMES FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!

2 PAGE 2 SAULS-BRIDGES AMERICAN LEGION POST 13 NEWS V OLUME 53, ISSUE 7 Fellow Legionairs, FROM THE COMMANDER It is a great privalage to serve Post 13 as Commander again, especially with the dedicated group of special members of our Post on our executive committee who continue to amaze me with their dedication and sacrifice. We should show our appreciation more often than we do. A smile and a THANK YOU won t cost you but very little. Post 13 American Legion Baseball continues to do better and better. After winning the state championship for the third year in a row; the team returned to the southeast regional championship was runnerup to the host team (Post 45 of Ashboro, NC); this team has hosted and won its area tournament 4 out of 5 years. Post 13 went farther than ever before, which should attract even more of the great high school players in our area. Post 13 recently sponsored six young men to Boys State. We also had a seventh attend as an alternate. Many of these boys were selected to various positions by their parties (Nationalist, Federalist). One of the boys, Landon Coles, was elected Governor, and for the first time 54 years the Nationalist party had won. Congratulations to all the boys and their participation in both of these youth organizations sponsored by Post 13. (To read a letter from Landon Coles, please see Pg. 3) Val Frailey - Commander TALLAHASSEE NATIONAL CEME- TERY/RED BASKET CAMPAIGN The Support Committee of the National Cemetery needs your help to purchase flowering trees and shrubs for the cemetery grounds located at 5015 Apalachee Parkway. 3 PAGE 3 SAULS-B RID GES AMERIC AN L EGION POST 13 NEWS GOLD STAR MOTHERS V OLUME 53, ISSUE 7 In 1928, Grace Darling Seibold, whose son was killed during WWI, founded American Gold Star Mothers, a support and service organization for women who lost their sons in the line of duty. In 1936, President Roosevelt established American Gold Star Mother's Day (September 24th this year). "We believe that we turn our sorrow into service and that we continue the service that our fallen sons and daughters never got to finish," says Candy Martin, the organization's former national president, whose son 1st Lt. Thomas Martin, was killed on Iraq in (Copied from the Parade Magazine dated July 16, 2017) MAIN GOALS OF GOLD STAR MOTHERS: Support women who suffered losses of their sons. Keep alive and develop respect and spirit for the men who have given up their lives in war. Promote peace and good will throughout America. Inspire respect for Americans who have died in war. 4 V OLUME 53, ISSUE 7 SAULS-BRIDGES AMERICAN LEGION POST 13 NEWS PAGE 4 CHAPLAIN S CORNER Noel Hurst Post 13 Chaplain Our Supreme Commander, May Your name be praised among the nations! It is Your who has made us and not we ourselves. It is You who has blessed us among all the nations of the whole world. May Your name be praised. You are the only true and living God and we praise You for who You are. You are the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. You are from everlasting to everlasting. You are our Savior and Redeemer. May Your name be praised in all the earth. You are the promised Messiah, the redeemer of all mankind. There is none other like You! Thank You for blessing us in, our beautiful city. Thank You for blessing our Legion Post. Thank You for camaraderie, for friendship we find here at the socials. Thank You, Father, for the volunteers who labor in the kitchen to prepare the food and those who bring the desserts that sweeten our lives. Father, we thank You for our new Post leader, Commander Val Faley. Give him wisdom to guide our Post for this year. Ande we thank you for members of the Executive Committee. Grant wisdom and prudence to each member. Lord, we need your wisdom for this task. Father, we live in perilous times. There is strife in our cities and strife internationally. Some trust in horses and chariots but our hope is in You. Some hope in planes, bombs and rockets but in the final analysis our hope is in YOU! Father, please bless and preserve America! God s love for us is GREAT!! His plan for us is perfect. He s our only hope. Jeremiah 29:11 We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen Dear Post 13, Mr. Richard Davidson, A THANK YOU FROM LANDON COLES (Continued from page 2) It has been a true honor and pleasure in attending Boys State. I've truly dedicated myself in working everyday to accomplish new goals and tasks. I ran a successful campaign for mayor of my city, Mimbs Creek. I then served as my county chairman and led them in making and holding countywide elections. The bulk of my time however, was dedicated to running for governor of the state. I served as the Nationalist party gubernatorial nominee. This was quite the undertaking in which we created a campaign video, as well as drafted an entire platform in less than a day! Following this was a debate and speech preparation's. In the end I came out victorious ending a 54 year drought. Thank you for this life-changing opportunity! Sincerely, Governor Landon Coles To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace. George Washington

Wildrick's slogan is "CATCHING RAYS - CREATING BRIGHTER FUTURES." Utilizing Sun Crystals for our energy helping our veterans and their families. President's Wildrick's Special Project is "K-9's For Warriors". K9's For Warriors philosophy is to involve the veterans in the training of their service canine partner, allowing the warrior the opportunity to be part of the solution to their recovery. As we focus on our new year and new ways of helping our veterans, lets' think of our program chairman as team leaders, they are just that, Leaders, however, it takes a team to achieve our goals. Each member plays a major role in the accomplishments of any organization from attending meetings, fund raisers or going into the community; it has to be a group effort. Supporting our Veterans, Military and their Families, our Children and Youth and Communities in the spirit of Service Not Self. If you have a preference to hold a chair or work on a particular program, please feel free to contact me at (850) Also, our General Membership has chosen "NOT" to continue the "Coupon Cutting Program", please discontinue saving your coupons for the Auxiliary. Our membership also chose to postpone the collection of school supplies until after the Christmas break. The Auxiliary feels the students have ample supplies to begin the new school year due to the community involvement and after the holiday's additional supplies are needed. If you would like to take advantage of the School Supply Sale now, the Auxiliary would be glad to store any donations for your convenience. The Auxiliary will be designating 30 minutes before the General Membership Meeting for our members to have some social time. This social time will be between the Executive Committee meeting and the General Membership meeting beginning at 6:30 pm. Remember, we meet at the Hooch the 2nd Thursday of every month. Come early, visit with our members and greet our new ones. The General Membership meeting will begin at 7:00 pm. The Auxiliary will prepare the food for the September social, the menu will be Beef Stew with noodles, salad, dessert. Tabor, wearing a Navy developed pressure suit, completes 72-hour simulated flight at altitudes as high a 139,000 feet. It was another step in the development of the Navy spacesuit, which NASA accepted in 1959 for use by Mercury astronauts Sept The term United States was adopted by the second Continental Congress to be used instead of the United Colonies Though it had only been a part of the United States for less than two years, California becomes the 31st state in the union (without ever even having been a territory) on this day in Captain Leslie E. Brown became the first Marine Corps aviator to a fly a jet in combat Fourth Fighter-Interceptor Wing Captains Richard S. Becker and Ralph D. Gibson became the second and third aces of the Korean War, with five kills each. On this day, they each shot down a MiG-15 in an air battle that pitted 28 Sabres against 70 MiGs. Sept In the first unqualified defeat of a British naval squadron in history, U.S. Captain Oliver Hazard Perry leads a fleet of nine American ships to victory over a squadron of six British warships at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of The battle was closely contested for hours, and Perry s flagship Lawrence was reduced to a defenseless wreck. He then transferred to the Niagara and sailed directly into the British line, firing broadsides and forcing the British to surrender. Perry had won a complete victory at the cost of 27 Americans killed and 96 wounded; British casualties were 40 dead and 94 wounded. After the battle, Perry sent a famous dispatch to U.S. General William Henry Harrison that read, We have met the enemy, and they are ours. The Battle of Lake Erie forced the British to abandon Detroit, ensuring U.S. control over Lake Erie and the territorial northwest. You Can t Change The Past, But You Can Ruin The Present: By Worrying About The Future. THE YEAR 1905 This will boggle your mind. The year is 1905, One hundred years ago, and what a difference a century makes!! Below are some of the U.S. statistics for the Year of 1905: The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years! (WOW, can you imagine living your entire life in just 47 years?) Only 14% of homes had BATHTUBS!! (A lot of people must of went around with clothes pins on their noses!) Only 8% of the homes had a telephone. (How quiet it was ) There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. (Man could we breathe some fresh air!) The average U.S worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. (And were complaining??...) IN THE FACE OF IMPOSSIBLE ODDS, PEOPLE WHO LOVE THIS COUNTRY CAN CHANGE IT
