Henry December 1999 The "Toolbox" Committee by Anne Cross You may ask, ''What on Earth is the 'Toolbox' Committee?" The "Toolbox" Committee is an ad hoc group of Hanover County organizations who share a common interest in the county, its history, culture and preservation. Many of the groups have their headquarters in historic buildings. Member organizations include: The Hanover County Historical Society The Hanover County Black Heritage Society The Hanover Branch of the APV A The National Park Service Hanover Tavern Foundation The Historic Polegreen Church Foundation Beaverdam Depot Sycamore Tavern The Montpelier Center for Arts and Education The Hanover Arts and Activities Center The group first met last winter at the instigation of Anne Cross, Bob Bluford, and Ellen Garati. All three had attended "Toolbox Workshops" sponsored by the Department of Historic Resources and the Preservation Alliance of. At the workshops, each received a red toolbox containing information about the many tools available to preserve 's history. Their first goal was to persuade the Board of Supervisors to observe Preservation Week in May. Local preservationist, Martha Wingfield, helped bring together the group to formulate plans. On May 12, 1999 the group held a dinner for the Board of Supervisors and county officials at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at the Courthouse. At the dinner Board Chairman, John Gordon, presented a proclamation of "Preservation Week." Ashley Neville, Chairman of the Hanover County Historical Commission also made remarks. The "Toolbox Group" continued to meet throughout the summer and in September joined with the Preservation Alliance of to present a workshop "Tools for Protecting Rural Character: The Role of Rural Historic Districts". Speakers included Kat Imhoff of the Preservation Alliance, Jack W. Mountcastle of the Tourism Corporation and Tad Thompson of Tuckahoe Plantation. The workshop was held at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center. It was well-attended and received good publicity. The "Toolbox Group" is now meeting on a monthly basis. Plans are in the works for a high quality portable exhibit about Hanover's history. A class from Mary Washington College is working with us on this. A subcommittee is also exploring publishing more "theme tour" brochures for the county. Working together we have achieved a lot. There is much more to do in Hanover County and everyone involved in the "Toolbox Committee" is excited about the possibilities! ERNESTINE DODL 21() MEADOWRIDGE DR LYNCHBURG VA

2 The Will of Mary Jones I, Mary Jones of the County of Hanover and State of, being of sound mind and disposing memory, do hereby make and declare, this to be my last will and testament, revoking all other wills by me at any time heretofore made. First, I desire & direct all my first debts & funeral expenses be paid, and a monument erected over my grave & the grave of my husband Washington Jones. The cost of the monument not to exceed two hundred fifty dollars. Second, I give my watch & short chain to Marietta Clough. Third, I give my breast pin given me by Henry Timberlake to Martha R. Sledd. Fourth, I give to the children of Emuella Taliaferro all of my household furniture of every description I may die possessed of. Fifth, I desire & direct my executor to hold, in trust, eighty acres of my Pole Green land, including the house & one acre to serve as a grave yard, for the use & benefit of Benjamin H. Beadles & wife & their children, for & during their natural lives, free from their debts & liabilities, provided he & they pay all taxes & keep the grave yard in good condition. At the death of said B.H. Beadles & wife & children, I give the said eighty acres of land to Thomas Alton Taliaferro & Joseph W. Taliaferro & their heirs with like restrictions named in proviso above. Sixth, I desire & direct the other majority of my Pole Green farm to be held, in trust, for the use & benefit of Thomas Alton & Joseph Whitlock - Taliaferro & their heirs. Seventh, I desire & direct my executor to have surveyed from my Pine Hill farm the following lots, viz: Five acres for James Oliver, Five acres for John Brooks, & Fifteen acres to be equally divided between Fanny Brooks, Westly Brooks, Ananias Brooks, Milton Brooks, Mary Wyatt & Betsy Davis. The partners named in this section were my servants, and I direct my executor to hold in trust the above named lots & parcels of land for their use & benefit for & during their natural lives, free from their debts & liabilities. At their deaths or the death of any of the parties named in this (seventh) section above my desire is that Thomas Alton & Joseph W. Taliaferro shall have & hold such lot & lots as conditioned in section (six) above. Eighth, I desire & direct my executor to give my table & tea spoons jewelry to any of my relatives as he in his judgement may think best. Ninth, I desire & direct my executor to sell all of my personal & real estate not included in the special legacies named above & the proceeds divided into four equal parts, one portion to the descendants of my sister Nancy Clough, one portion to the descendants of my sister Harriet Whitlock & one portion to be equally divided between Harriet Thomas & Lucy Thomas, children of John D. Thomas, De'ced, and Mollie & Florence Cook, children of William Cook. Tenth, I hereby Constitute and appoint as my sole executor D. A. Timberlake and request that the Court require no security of him as such, and that he be allowed ten percent in addition to the regular legal fees. Taliaferro, and all that portion of my Pole Green farm named in the 6th clause of this will, I also direct my ex' or to sell and divide the proceeds of sale as above directed. The 5th and 7th clauses of my will I revoke, and leave solely to Thos. A. Taliaferro and Joseph W. Taliaferro, sons of Emu ella M.

Taliaferro, daughter of Emuella M. Taliaferro. I make these changes in my will in consideration of the kindness and affection shown me by said parties. Williams, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto, and was thereupon ordered to be recorded as true last will and testament of the said Mary Jones, deceased, and on the motion of Herndon Taliaferro, the only executor named in the codicils to the said will, who made oath as the laws direct and entered into a bond in the penalty often Thousand Dollars, conditioned according to law, but without security, the will directing that none should be required of him, and which said bond being aclmowledged by the obligor therein, is ordered to be recorded- Certificate is granted, the said Herndon Taliaferro for obtaining a probate of the said will and codicils in due form. BrOWt1 Ckrk From Will Book 1, Hanover County Circuit Court, page , HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXECUTIVE BOARD Benjamin LaTrobe The artist, Benjamin LaTrobe, was born in Yorkshire, England, in He received training in both Architecture and Engineering before coming to the United States in 1796, where he lived in Norfolk and Richmond. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson appointed him surveyor of buildings in Washington, D. C. Latrobe helped L 'Enfant perfect designs for the rebuilding of the Capitol there after the fire of 1814, and designed buildings in Richmond, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D. C. As an artist, he sketched Patrick Henry from life, and made designs for Henry Clay's home, Ashland. In 1797, LaTrobe visited Bathurst Jones' home in Hanover County, and the villages of Hanover Town and Newcastle. He described Hanover Town in detail: Hanover is scarcely in any respect flourishing. The White inhabitants of all Ranks and occupations are 23. The blacks 52, in all 75. There is only one miserable brick store, the rest of the buildings are of timber and excepting one or two, much out of repair... When the whole town 11 assembled every evening at the billiard room, they appear in contrast to the rest. The accompanying illustration by LaTrobe is of a billiards game in a tavern in Hanover, where he also sketched a local slave.
