1 John W. Moore 1805 c.1890 GEORGIA 1 John, a native of Georgia, was born in 1805, the son of Mr. Moore and Elizabeth (Gransey?). John married Nancy Baily 1 who was a native of Florida. Nancy was born in 1815 in Florida. The couple had the following children while living in Georgia: 1. William A. b m. Martha 2. Ivey (Dicie) b m. W. L. "Fate" Harrison 3. Sarah A. b m. The family moved to Coffee County, Alabama around While living here, John worked as a Farmer. During their stay in Alabama, the couple had an additional nine children. 4. Pamelia A. b m. John C. Tadlock 5. James Steely b. Mar 22, 1843 m. Catherine L. Steele 6. John Raven b. Feb 10, 1845 m. Nancy Elizabeth Gordon 7. Nancy A. Jane b m. Jacob J. J.J. Preachers 2 8. The 1860 Coffee County, Alabama Census shows John and Nancy living with James S., John R., Nancy, Marion E., and Abercrombie C. The 1860 Agricultural Census valued his real property at $500, while his other personal property was valued at $490. John s oldest son, William is listed as living nearby at age 27, with his wife Martha age 23 from AL, living near John. Some time before 1870, the family moved to Walton County, FL. John homesteaded land in the Laurel Hill area of the present day county of Okaloosa. The 1870 Agricultural Census reported his real estate value at $200, while his personal property was valued at $100. His sons, James, Manning, and Abner were working as laborers on their father s farm with Elizabeth also living at home. The 1880 Walton County census reports that John, age 75, is living with his son James. He is listed as tending to the gristmill on James farm. It is believed that John died prior to Nancy may be related to John D. Bailey, son of Dawson and Louisa Bailey of PA, as John D. lived with the James S. Moore in Chambers Co., AL. 2 J. J. Preacher filed for a Confederate soldier's pension in 1896, listing Nancy as his spouse. He was living in Walton Co., FL at the time; however, he had served with an Alabama regiment.

3 Ivey "Dicy" Moore GEORGIA 12 Ivey, the second of twelve children, was born in 1837 to John Moore and Nancy Baily while the family resided in Georgia. After the family moved to Coffee Co., Alabama around 1940, Ivey met and later (around ) married W. L. Frances "Fate" Harrison. Fate, the son of Thomas and Mary Harrison of Georgia, was born in 1840 in Coffee Co., AL. The following children were born to this union: 1. J. T. b m. C. N. 2. Elizabeth b m. 3. Llety b m. The 1885 Walton County Census shows Fate and Ivey living at home with their daughters Elizabeth and Llety. J.T. is also living with his parents along with his bride, C.N.

4 James Steeley Moore ALABAMA 15 James was the fifth of twelve children born to John W. Moore and Nancy Bailey. James was born March 22, 1843, in Coffee County, Alabama. While living in Coffee County, James joined company H of the 53d Alabama Infantry, Mounted Partisan Rangers, in He is listed as a private on roll 451. He enlisted Aug 18, 1862 in Elba, AL under Lt. R. Stratford. Command of his company then transferred to Lt. J. E. P. Flaurnoy in September of that year. He received $50 pay for serving from his date of enlistment up until Feb 8, The company reported December 29, 1864 to Capt. J. P. Dickenson. The following are a brief synopsis of the exploits of the 53 rd Alabama from extracts of the official war records. The fifty-third regiment of mounted infantry was organized in the fall of 1862, by the addition of several companies to Maj. T. F. Jenkins Battalion, which had already rendered gallant service at Shiloh. The regiment was first placed in Roddey s brigade, and fought at Thompson s station, Brentwood, Town Creek, and in the pursuit of Streight. The Company was on picketed duty at Dalton, GA in April When Roddey s brigade was transferred to General Polk s department, this regiment was detached and brigaded under General Hannon. Afterwards, under General Hagan in Wheeler s cavalry corps, it took part in the perilous fighting all the way from Dalton to Atlanta. The 53 rd participated in the daring raid of 1864 in Sherman s rear, and captured 100 men and 1,500 beef cattle. The 53 rd fought at Jonesboro and Resaca, continuing to harass the Federals in the Carolinas. Extracts from the Official War Records list the following: Shiloh, April 6 & 7, men engaged on the 6 th, 47 on the 7 th ; 2 killed 6 wounded. 53 rd Alabama infantry, mounted Partisan Rangers: Vol XV (903). Troop in the district of the Gulf present for duty, 517; HQ Mobile, AL Dec 10, Jenkin s squadron, 2 killed and 12 wounded, engagement at Thompson s Station, TN: Mar Affair at Florence, March 25 th says, Hanon s regiment was pouring volley after volley into the boats from the other side. Roddey s brigade, Wheeler s corps, July 1863, Detached Dec At Athens, AL Jan 26, Mentioned April 20 th, on picket duty in front of Dalton, GA, not transferred to Polk s department. Hanon s brigade, Wheeler s Corps, April 30, Battle of Resaca, Hannon s brigade, Wheeler s corps, April 20, Atlanta campaign, ordered to Jonesboro to cooperate with General Armstrong in repelling raid coming in that direction, Aug 28, Hagan s brigade, Wheeler s corps, Jan Augusta, GA: Feb 10, James moved from Coffee Co., Alabama to Walton Co., Florida with his father in While living in Walton Co., FL, James married Catherine L. Steele. Catherine, born August 13, 1853 in Florala, Covington Co., Alabama, was the second of twelve children born to Joseph Steele and Mary Stewart.

Annie Louise O'Neale James worked as a farmer in the area of Laurel Hill. The 1900 census 3 shows that John, Nancy, Dean, and Dicy had married and left home by that time. By , Mary, Edward, Permelia, Thomas, and Emma had married and left home. James filed for a Confederate soldier's pension in At this time he was over 60 years old, had liver problems, and as of March 1, he could no earn a living from manual labor. This was due to injuries received from being thrown from a horse that broke two ribs on his left side and injured his back near his kidneys. He is living in Bethel, Florida at this time. The physician s affidavit indicates that James suffered from an enlarged liver and had a weak heart. According to Pensions & Widow's Pensions for CW - From DeFuniak Springs Newspapers he received $ per annum from October 1st 1909 to March 1st His 1909 Pension Claim states that he was honorably discharged near Augusta, GA in South Carolina 6 on May 1, This discharge states that James served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the Confederate States Army in the year 1865, and did non desert the service of the Confederate States Army nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies Soundex T ; Census Soundex T162-49; Census His pension application did not list a spouse as Catherine must have died by this time. 6 Likely North August, SC. 7 Lee Surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House in VA on April 9, 1865.

6 The 1909 pension claim also states that he had the following assets: Real Estate near Laurel Hill, FL $1,200 Stock Cattle $ 200 One Mule & Personal Property $ 300 He received the pension amount of $120 per year as his total assets did not exceed $5,000, he was disabled, and had been a citizen of the State of Florida for 10 years prior to application. In 1915 James filed an application for increase in pension. His request states that he is disabled from an injured back and age (72). By , all the children have left home with the exception of Andrew, who is listed as residing with his parents, though he is married and has a 1-year-old son. James died January 8, 1922 in the new created county of Okaloosa, FL Soundex M ; Census

7 John Joseph Moore FLORIDA 151 John was the first of fifteen children born to James S. Moore and Catherine Steele. He was born October 5, 1872 in Yellow River, Walton County, FL. John married Amanda Catherine Campbell. Amanda, born July 10, 1872, was the daughter of Allen Campbell and Amelia Clary. The family moved to the Yellow River area of Walton County, and had the following issue: 1. Cora Elsie b. Jul 11, 1894 m. Coy Rovander McIntosh 2. Allen J. b. Aug 31, 1896 m. Stella Phillips 3. 10 Allen J. Moore, Sr FLORIDA 1512 Allen, the second of seven children, was born August 31, 1896 to John J. Moore and Amanda Campbell in Okaloosa Co., FL. Allen later married Stella Phillips. 11 Allen J. Moore, Jr Allen Jr., the second of six children, was born to Allen J. Moore, Sr. and Stella Phillips. Allen later married Hope Ardnan. The children of Allen Jr. and Hope Moore are: 1. Clayton b. m. 2. James S. b. m. 3. Jack D. b. m. 4. Mikelean b. m.

13 Birdie S. Moore FLORIDA 1514 Birdie, the fourth of seven children, was born December 19, 1900 to John J. Moore and Amanda Campbell in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., FL. Birdie died July 15, 1986 and is buried in Magnolia Cemeter, Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., Florida.

14 James Hancock "Jim" Moore FLORIDA 1515 Jim, the fifth of seven children, was born November 24, 1902 to John J. Moore and Amanda Campbell in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., FL. Jim later married Thelma N. Steele, born January 27, The children of Jim and Thelma Moore are: 1. Theresa A. b. Mar 1, 1948 m. Gloy Creel 8/21/ James Denny b. Feb 12, 1953 m. Lois Childers 3/20/1960 During World War II, Jim served in the US Navy and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Jim died December 21, 1986, and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., FL.

15 Theresa A. Moore FLORIDA Theresa, the oldest of two children, was born March 1, 1948 to James Hancock Moore and Thelma Steele in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., FL. She later married Gloy Creel, born August 21, The children of Theresa and Gloy Creel are: 1. Suzanne b. Mar 7, 1976 m. 2. Mike b. May 25, 1979 m. Theresa and Gloy are currently living near her father on the original homestead land. They have used the original house to store hay. This is the homestead that James S. Moore founded when the family moved to Florida from Coffee Co., Alabama.

16 Robert E. Lee Moore FLORIDA 1516 Robert, the sixth of seven children, was born February 8, 1906 to John J. Moore and Amanda Campbell in Okaloosa Co., FL. Robert later married Anne H. Spence. The children of Robert and Anne Moore are: 1. Bobby b. m.

17 Nancy Moore FLORIDA 1517 Nancy, the last of seven children, was born March 14, 1907 to John J. Moore and Amanda Campbell in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., FL. Nancy later married Malcolm Taft Barrow. Malcolm was born March 1, Malcolm died April 3, 1959 and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., Florida. Nancy died November 9, 1985 and is buried next to her husband.

18 James William Moore FLORIDA 153 James was the third of fifteen children born to James S. Moore and Catherine Steele. He was born March 12, 1875 in Yellow River, Walton County, FL. On September 12, 1918, James registered for the draft. He is listed as being 43 years old working as a B&B. He was living with his father at the time in Laurel Hill RFD. He had blue eyes and gray hair. James married Betty Albenia prior to 1920.

19 Mary Lou Moore FLORIDA 154 Mary, the fourth of fifteen children, was born July 1876 to James S. Moore and Catherine Steele in Yellow River, Walton County, FL. Mary later (post 1890) married James Lafayette "Buddy" Richbourg, the son of William Lafayette Richbourg and Margaret Anne Carr, born Mary and Buddy had the following issue: 1. Carris b. m. Mary was Buddy's second wife. He was previously married to Rachel Cambell, born September 15, 1862 and died September 15, Buddy died in 1936 in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co., FL

20 Dicie Amandy Moore FLORIDA 156 Dicey, the sixth of fifteen children, was born June 28, 1878 to James S. Moore and Catherine Steele in Walton Co., Florida. In March 1896 she married Daniel Harris Howard, son of Christopher (Kif) Howard. They had the following issue: 1. Mary Catherine b. m. 2. Blanche Martha b. Nov 26, m. 3. Ruth Etta b. Aug 28 m. 4. Ruby Esther b. Aug 28 m. 5. Bessie D. b. m. 6. James Columbus b. m. 7. Daniel Webster b. m. 8. Velva Lorene b. Aug 13, 1915 m.1 George Freddy Peacock 9. Wilson Pershing b. Jan 1, m. In Clark Co., Washington on April 28, 1920, Daniel married Thelma Mae Wilkerson. Thelma, the daughter of William Murray Wilkerson and Zarilda Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kendall, was born Jan 3, 1903 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Daniel and Thelma had the following issue: 1. Patricia b. m. 2. Mike b. m. 3. Thelma Mae b. m. 4. Jerry b. m. 5. Mary Lee b. m. 6. Murray b. m. 7. Ned b. m. Thelma died August 4, 1989 in Sublimity, Marion Co., Oregon.

The family was listed as living in Laurel Hill, in the newly created county of Okaloosa. After 1917, Andrew married Annie Louise O'Neale, born August 12, 1896 in Alabama. They had the following issue: 1. Hunter Samuel b m. The 1920 census shows Andrew and his family living with his father James on the family homestead. Andrew died May 25, 1935 at home.
