1 BROMLEY & CROYDON DISTRICT ORGANISTS & CHOIRMASTERS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT: MR. PETER SANDERS, D.O., M.R.O. From the Hon. Secretary MR. CHRISTOPHER TOWN, B.Ed(HonsLond)., LRAM., LGSM., ATCL., ACP., FRSA., FISM., HonLCM 96 RIDGEWAY DRIVE, BROMLEY, KENT, BR1 5DD Tel: (Home) (Mobile) 19th July 015 Dear Members, Our Summer Country Organ Tour is all arranged for next Saturday 5th July with three excellent organs and a promising pub. All the details can be found below. Our Annual Dinner on 7th June was our first to be held at Emanuel URC, West Wickham, and was most successful. We were honoured to have Daniel Moult and Revd Canon Dr John Thewlis as our special guests who proved to be both informative and entertaining. Many thanks to our caterer, Ann Hughes of "Manna" for a splendid meal, efficiently served; and to Ian Verran for making the booking for us and for helping me to set up on the day SATURDAY 5TH JULY 015 FROM 9.15 a.m., SUMMER COUNTRY ORGAN TOUR TO ST MARY'S LONG DITTON, ST MARTIN'S EPSOM, YE OLDE KING'S HEAD EPSOM, AND ST MARY'S EWELL, ARRANGED BY MR. JONATHAN HOLMES. We are very grateful to Mr. Jonathan Holmes for arranging this Summer Tour for us so soon after joining the Association! We will be visiting three fine churches each of which contains an excellent organ. We have made a reservation for lunch at a good pub which is situated directly opposite our second church. We are making rather an early start but the day will have quite a leisurely pace a.m. St Mary's Long Ditton The first stop on our tour is St Mary's, Long Ditton, where we can park in the lay-by on the opposite side of the road to the church. There has been a church on the site from Saxon times but the present building (the fourth) dates from 10 and is the work of George Edmund Street. It is a beautiful Victorian building with many memorials in and outside the church. It also has some stunning stained glass. We will meet Paul Taylor at 9.15 a.m. and play the newly restored organ. Coffee will be available. Paul Taylor has sent the following resumé of directions to Long Ditton. "They might prove better than satnavs which take one all though Surbiton - and over endless speed humps. There are also quite a few roadworks on the satnav route around Hook. Speed cameras also included at no extra cost." Directions to St Mary s Church Long Ditton (corner of Woodstock Lane North and Church Road), Long Ditton, Surrey, KT6 5HH from M5 Gatwick (clockwise) Leave M5 at Junction 9 At roundabout take second exit (A3 Kingston) After 1 mile at next roundabout take third exit (A3 Kingston) Continue on this road for approx 5 miles, passing Chessington World of Adventure on the left (watch three speed cameras in this area: one (limit 0mph) behind a tree after the The Star pub and just before the 30mph sign Cont. over

2 another (limit 30mph) outside Chessington World of Adventure and another (limit 30mph) just past shops and traffic lights just before filling station on left also police mobile cameras often operating) After the 5 miles turn left at roundabout (Shell garage on opposite r/h corner) (sp. Hinchley Wood, Esher A309) After 1.1 miles at roundabout do a U-turn and go back up the other side of the A309 dual carriageway After ½ mile from roundabout fork left: sp. Long Ditton, Hook, Surbiton (do not continue onto A3) Take first left (by Hill Park Nursery) into Woodstock Lane North. Past Squires Garden Centre. At bend in road Church on the right. St. Mary, Church Road, Long Ditton, Surrey, KT6 5HH The first organ in the new 10 church, with two manuals and fifteen stops, was built by Forster and Andrews of Hull and installed in 11. Early photographs and paintings of the church show that the casework projected into the chancel, unlike the present instrument. In 19, after nearly fifty years, the organ was in need of attention and the lowest estimate by Abbott and Smith of Leeds, was accepted. Unfortunately they converted the organ to pneumatic action which was unreliable and the instrument received attention from four different organ builders over the following forty years. Eventually the unreliability reached a point where it was decided that the organ should be replaced with an instrument with mechanical tracker action (like the original Forster and Andrews organ). Matthew Copley, a local organ builder installed an organ originally built c160 by Alfred Hunter for the former Borough Road Baptist Chapel in South London. Cont. Page 3 3

3 This organ was installed in 19 with the addition of a mixture stop and a good ft pedal stop by Hill, but only six years later it was damaged by smoke from a serious fire in the church vestry. Repairs were executed in 199 together with some additions and modifications, including converting the pedals to electric action. In the organ was overhauled by Andrew Cooper. His work included a new solenoid-operated electric stop action and combination action, providing thumb pistons to Swell, thumb pistons to Great & Pedal, three reversible thumb pistons to Swell to Great, Swell to Pedal and Great to Pedal, plus a General Cancel and a setter piston. The Swell suboctave coupler key contacts were replaced to a modified design to improve the key touch and the Pedal key action switching replaced. The main Swell and Great key actions and couplers were overhauled and remain mechanical. The bellows was re-leathered, the manual and pedal keys refurbished, the pedalboard relocated at the right height relative to the manual keys and a new adjustable stool provided. The Great Organ soundboard and wind trunks were modified to provide reliable tuning and a steady wind supply. The Great Stopped Diapason, Principal and Fifteenth were replaced as the previous pipework was beyond repair, as was the treble (from Tenor G) of the Swell Trumpet. The Great Mixture composition was modified in the treble and the Swell Gamba revoiced. The front pipes are now painted gold with silver mouths. The Organ Consultant was John Norman The opening recital was given by Philip Berg, MVO, Master of the Music of The Queen s Chapel of the Savoy on 13 September 01. 5 11.30 a.m. St Martin's Church, Epsom St Martin's is a long, light and airy church, rebuilt and extended several times since the first foundation which was probably in Saxon times. The tower is mediaeval, the nave is Georgian and the transepts and chancel were greatly extended in Edwardian times. The Car Park in front of the Church is not private and there are no restrictions on Saturdays so you may find that there are limited spaces. Alternative parking is available in the Town Hall Car Park and Depot Road Car Park. Here we will meet Iain McFarlane the organist and will be free to play until 1pm St. Martin of Tours, Church Street, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 PX St Martin's has a fine three-manual Norman & Beard organ. The church has had the privilege of many gifted organists working in the music department. Musicians that have worked in the church include Felton Rapley, arranger for Chappells in the 1960s, Charles Waters, organist and composer, Ray Humble, organist with a gift for accompaniment and, on occasions in the 190s, Ralph Vaughan Williams. He has booked a table for us but we will need to know numbers coming in order that we can let the pub know how many tables are required. There are 'daily specials' in addition to the regular menu items and we don't think it will be necessary to order in advance..15 p.m. St Mary's Ewell After lunch we make our way to St Mary's Ewell, where you can stay as long as you like. Cont. Page 7 7 There has been a church on this site for over a thousand years. The present St Mary's was built in 17 to replace an ancient building that had become delapidated. It contains fittings and memorials from the old

7 church of which only a tower remains. The architect was Henry Clutton and the church contains many interesting features. Parking is available to the back of the church in Church Street in front of the gates to the churchyard. Jonathan Holmes, who is Director of Music at the church, will play Duruflé's 'Veni Creator' complete and then everyone can play and visit the organ interior if interested. Tea will be available. There are many restaurants and pubs by the church for those seeking further refreshment! St. Mary the Virgin, London Road, Ewell Village, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 AQ St Mary s is honoured to have a large and quite superb Father Willis pipe organ of three manuals and pedals, built in 19 by Father Henry Willis one of the greatest of English organ-builders in the Nineteenth Century to a specification [see below] and quality closely similar to the renowned organ of Truro Cathedral (built two years earlier by the same distinguished Company). It was taken from the church of St Augustine, Highbury, London and installed here in 1975 after the fire of 1973, in which our original Father Willis instrument was destroyed.
