Recitalists sponsored were: William C. Aylesworth, Adam Gruber, Dennis Northway, and David Schrader. THE MIDWEST ORGAN IN HISTORY SUBMITTED BY STEPHEN L. PINEL Stephen L. Pinel, Organ Historical Society Archivist, has submitted the following item regarding the 1857 House organ for the First Baptist Church of Chicago, from The Buffalo Courier, Monday, March 9, 1857: THE ORGAN FOR CHICAGO. A considerable number assembled at the Organ Manufactory of Mr. G. House on Saturday morning, to listen to the trial of the organ just completed for the First Baptist Church of Chicago. The instrument more than equaled the expectations of those present. In action, quality of tone and power it is alike excellent. The action is reversed so that the performer faces the audience, and has the key-board more fully at his command than under the old arrangement. The organ has two banks of keys from C. C. to G, in altissimo; and two octave pedals from C. C. C. to C. It has the following stops:-- GREAT ORGAN. Open Diapason, Stop d Diapason, Stop d Diapason Bass, Dulciana, Viol D Amour, Principal, Twelfth, Fifteenth, Violano [sic], Walde Flute [sic], Sesquialtra, Trumpet, SWELL ORGAN. Double Diapason, Open Diapason, Stop d Diapason, Clarabella, Principal, Twelfth, Picola [sic], Dulciana Cornet, Hautboy, Melodia Bass, Tremulent [sic], Fifteenth, PEDAL ORGAN. Double Open Diapason C. C. C., Violincello C. C. There are couples to connect the Great and Swell Organ, the Pedal and Swell Organ, and the Pedal and Great Organ. In the interior arrangement of the pipes, Mr. HOUSE has made several decided improvements which facilitate tuning and repairing very much. The case is finished in Grecian style and is very neat. The workmanship throughout is perfect, and, as a consequence, the action is noiseless and exact. The piano tones of the instrument are remarkably sweet, and the full organ gives a great volume of sound without drowning the melody of the music. The stops are all good. The Instrument was played by Mr. BLODGETT, the organist of St. John s Church, by Mr. EVERETT L. BADER and by CARL FREDERICK BAUM, who displayed its fine qualities very acceptably to the listeners. It is to be taken down and packed to-day, and will be immediately shipped to Chicago. We understand that Mr. BLODGETT will go on with Mr. HOUSE, and will in due time favor the good people of Chicago with a specimen of the eloquence of a Buffalo Organ in the hands of a Buffalo Organist. Mr. HOUSE cannot fail to add to his present high reputation by building such instruments as the one we have thus hurriedly noticed. 4

We will visit four churches on Saturday, October 10, 2009, between 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. to see and hear five organs unique to our area built by Maxcy Barton, Holloway, Gress-Miles, and Harrison & Harrison, all housed in architecturally diverse settings. WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Grand Avenue and West Street, is the Catholic mother parish of Waukegan, founded in 1841 as Saint Anne Church. The area was then part of the Diocese of Vincennes, Indiana. The parish became known as Saint Mary soon after the formation of the Diocese of Chicago in In 1847, the first church was finished at County and Water Streets. By 1854, the parish was called Saint Bernard. It officially took its present name in 1864 and is the fourth oldest parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago. The present property was purchased in The cornerstone of a church in the American Colonial style was laid the following year, and the building was dedicated on May 11, Joe W. McCarthy of Chicago drew the plans, like several in the Archdiocese of Chicago, reminiscent of the chapel of Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary in nearby Mundelein. The exterior is faced in Pennsylvania blue granite. The organ was built by the Maxcy-Barton Organ Company of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It was given in memory of Nicholas T. Reardon by his wife and is one of the few extant examples of this builder s work specifically for church use. The organ is eminently restorable, and some restorative repairs have been recently carried out by Jeff Weiler of Chicago. Photographs by Stephen Schnurr. WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS, Christ Episcopal Church, Grand Avenue and North Martin Luther King, Jr., Avenue, has been the Episcopal parish in Waukegan since it was officially organized on February 7, The parish s first edifice was built just north of the present church on Utica Street (now Martin Luther King, Jr., Avenue). Ground was broken on October 10, 1887, for the present church building on the corner of Grand Avenue and Utica Street. The cornerstone was laid on June 25, 1888, and on January 31, 1889, the church was consecrated by the Right Reverend William E. McLaren, Bishop of Chicago. The Richardsonian Romanesque church constructed of Carbondale brownstone with Gothic features was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Edbrook and Burnham. It was completed at a total cost of $33, through special gifts and memorials. Special features include: ten recessed stained glass windows including one from the Tiffany studio; one large window in the front of the church representing Christ and the children; oak pews with cherry trim 6

7 constructed by the A. W. Hempleman and Co. of Richmond, Indiana, at a cost of $730.00; and a 120-foot tall bell tower that houses one 1800-pound bell cast in Troy, New York. The Lady Chapel was completed in 1914 and was dedicated by the Right Reverend Charles Palmerstone Anderson, D.D., Bishop of Chicago, on Sunday, December 11, The 28-foot by 63-foot chapel seats 60 and was designed by architect Harry Mace of Evanston. The golden oak altar was carved by John Lang, son of the famed wood carver of Oberammergau, Germany, Alois Lang. The stained glass triptych window behind the altar was imported from England. The chapel is considered to be one of the best examples of perpendicular Gothic design in the northern Chicago metropolitan area. The organ firm of Marshall-Bennett installed their opus 194 in This 2-manual instrument was later replaced by M. P. Möller s Opus 5873 in the 1930s, a rather large 3-manual organ of 50 registers. This was later replaced in 1975 by the present electro-pneumatic organ with slider chests built by the firm of E. H. Holloway Corporation of Indianapolis, Indiana. The dedication service and recital performed by Allan Moeller, organist at the Church of the Holy Spirit [no date], consisted of the following: Processional Praise to the Lord Organ Recital played by Allan Moeller Prelude and Fugue in A minor Johann Sebastian Bach Choralpartita on Christ is my Life Johann Pachelbel Scherzo from Symphonie II Louis Vierne Fairest Lord Jesus Hermann Schroeder Toccata from Symphonie V Charles-Marie Widor Opening Sentences from Evening Prayer Psalm 150 Scripture Lesson Nunc Dimittis The Creed The Lord s Prayer Versicle and Responses Collects Prayer of Dedication Anthem Cherubim Song Bortniansky Prayers and Benediction Recessional Glorious Things The Rev. WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS, First Presbyterian Church, North Martin Luther King, Jr., Avenue between Robert V. Sabonjian Place and West Clayton Street, was founded in 1857 and built its first frame church of Gothic influence the following year. The cornerstone for the present Romanesque-style sanctuary was laid on November 18, The building of hydraulic pressed brick over a Bedford limestone foundation and trim cost $15,540. It featured the first inclined floor in a Waukegan church. Dedication occurred on March 18 of the following year. The sanctuary was remodeled in 1963 and In 1899, A. B. Felgemaker of Erie, Pennsylvania, installed its opus 691, a two-manual, twenty-three rank organ. A gift from Jane McAllister made the acquisition possible. The church still has the warranty, dated April 3, 1899, and signed by Mr. Felgemaker. The present organ was installed by Gress-Miles of Pennington, New Jersey, at a cost of $28,000. It was dedicated along with the renovated sanctuary on June 24, 1964, with a recital by Mrs. Charles Mattes, the church s director of music and organist. Manual compass is 58 notes (C-A); Pedal compass is 32 notes (C-G). In 1981, a set of Chimes was added to the Great division (from tenor G, 24 tubes). Five years later, a horizontal trumpet rank of copper was placed on the rear wall of the sanctuary, with additional stop tablets for each manual and Pedal. The two-manual, tubularpneumatic instrument had thirteen stops and four couplers. In May of 1929, plans were approved by the Vestry for purchase of a new, three-manual, electro-pneumatic action organ from the Chicago firm of W. W. Kimball. The Lyon & Healy organ was moved to the chapel. Work to remove the old organ to the chapel and installation of the new instrument began in August. The Kimball organ was dedicated in service on Sunday, November 3. A recital was later played by Franklin Glynn. The entire project cost $22,500. In 1972, the Kimball organ was given to Grace United Methodist Church of nearby Lake Bluff. A new organ of three manuals, forty-four ranks was commissioned by Holy Spirit from Harrison & Harrison, Ltd., of Durham, England. The instrument was installed during a project that increased the size of the church. Harrison & Harrison shipped the organ back to England for enlargement and enhancement, a project occurring in 1994 and The nave of the church was again reconfigured at that time. The three-manual, fifty-rank organ was then placed in a chamber with a new façade of oak with display pipes. The console is detached and moveable. A new, one-manual, three-rank, mechanical action organ was also purchased from Harrison & Harrison. Compass is 54 notes (C-F). 11 SOME CHICAGO ERBENIANA MICHAEL D. FRIESEN The New York City organbuilder Henry Erben ( ) built several organs for churches in the city of Chicago prior to the Great Fire of October 9, 1871, which not only changed the physical landscape of much of its center, but also effectively changed its organ landscape for some time. Whereas the instruments that had been installed up to that point, starting with the first pipe organ in 1837 built by Erben reflected the work of a wide range of firms, almost all of the important organs that came after the fire were constructed by New England businesses: Johnson & Son, E. & G. G. Hook & Hastings, and Steere & Turner. Erben is not known to have built an instrument for Chicago after By the time that a firm from New York City, the Roosevelt Organ Works, had again obtained a major toehold in the Chicago market (speaking of the 1889 Chicago Auditorium instrument), Erben was dead, and his firm had gone out of business. When this writer first published articles about early organs in Chicago in this journal (Whole Numbers 35 through 42, October 1985 to April 1987), gleanings of newspaper coverage were then dependent on the tedious process of reading microfilm page by page, hoping to find mentions of organs. Since then, the digitization of newspapers that has begun, which permits keyword searches and retrieval of full texts, has made it considerably easier to find descriptions of such instruments. This article thus presents some new information on Erben organs or Henry himself, based primarily on gleanings from the Chicago Tribune. It is inevitable that more details will continue to surface in the future, as the Tribune is the only Chicago newspaper that has been digitized to-date. It clearly did not always cover the arrival of pipe organs, however, based on a careful review of available articles on organs derived from the database of its issues as compared to known installations. Other major Chicago newspapers of the past will surely become available in electronic format in coming years, and their journalistic rivalries almost ensures that somewhere a newspaper covered the arrival of an organ that a competitor did not, all of which will be to the benefit of those of us who love reading about organ history. The following organs are known to have been built by Erben for Chicago destinations. The dates of some are uncertain, inasmuch as publicity of their installations has continued to be elusive. The dates of some come from lists of organs that Erben published from time to time, but they are not always completely reliable Saint James Episcopal Saint Mary Catholic [it became the first cathedral] Grace Episcopal Saint Paul Universalist Saint Patrick Catholic Holy Name Catholic Cathedral Christ Episcopal Plymouth Congregational The Saint James organ was replaced by a larger Hall & Labagh in The Saint Mary instrument, though dated 1847 on some Erben opus lists, undoubtedly a typographical error, was surely the organ in place at the time that the cathedral was dedicated on October 5, 1845, as nothing has yet been found to indicate that it was replaced only two years later, which would not have been likely, anyway. Both Saint James and Saint Mary burned in the Great Fire. The 1856 organ at Grace Episcopal was replaced by E. & G. G. Hook, Op. 472, in The Tribune carried two brief articles about the Erben at Saint Paul Universalist; the first announcing its dedication on Saturday, October 3, 1857 with appropriate musical ceremonies, under the management of Mr. W. H. Currie, the organist, and the second as a review of the program, which reads as follows: On last Saturday evening, at St. Paul s (Universalist) church, [a] service was held on the occasion of the dedication of the new organ recently placed there. The instrument was made by Henry Erben, of New York, and is in good keeping with the interior of the church. Its tones are full and musical and it has sufficient power for all practical purposes. Its merits were fully tested by Messrs. Becker and Currie, and Miss Tillinghast. The choir of the church, Mr. and Mrs. Mozart, Mrs. Matteson and Mr. Robbins, sang several selections from Haydn and Mendelssohn, and elicited the favorable comment of all present. 1 1 Dedication, Chicago Tribune, September 29, 1857, 1; Dedication of St. Paul s Church Organ, Chicago Tribune, October 6, 1857, 1. 11

12 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, Plymouth Congregational Church, Henry Erben organ, New York City, New York, 1871, three manuals, 39 stops, 44 ranks, 2,384 pipes. Great Swell (continued) 16 Double Open Diapason (metal) 8 Cornopean 8 Open Diapason 8 Hautboy 8 Gamba 8 Melodia ( an excellent 8-foot wooden stop ) Choir 8 Stopped Diapason 8 Open Diapason 4 Principal 8 Clarabella 4 Wald Flute 8 Keraulophon 2 2/3 Twelfth 8 Dulciana 2 Fifteenth 8 Stopped Diapason II Sesquialtera 4 Octave IV Mixture 4 Flute Traverse 8 Trumpet 2 Flageolet 4 Clarion 8 Clarionet [Clarinet] 8 Bassoon Swell 16 Bourdon Pedal 8 Open Diapason 16 Double Open Diapason 8 Viol de Gamba 16 Bourdon 8 Stopped Diapason 10 2/3 Quint 4 Violano [Violina] 8 Violoncello 4 Flute Harmonique 8 Melodia Flute 2 Piccolo 16 Trombone (metal) IV Cornet Note: although the accounts generally did not give the stop pitches, they are listed here as derived from the stoplist given in The Stopt Diapason, Vol. 8, No. 1, Whole No. 41, Although the rank count of the mixtures implies that the total rank count would have been 46, the mathematical results of compasses taken with the stated pipe count indicates that drawing on the Mixture on the Great would also draw on the Sesquialtera, and thus the Mixture had only two independent ranks of its own. All of the stops were full-compass. This would have been a stunning instrument to play, very rich in color and variety, and it is unfortunate that the organ was lost to history. A FORTHCOMING PUBLICATION FROM THE ORGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY The noted author, Barbara Owen, has written Music on the Green: The Organists, Choirmasters, and Organs of Trinity Church. America s foremost organ historian, Owen has documented every facet of music of the parish, with biographies of musicians who have served Trinity from De Lucena Benjamin, the first organist to play the first organ in 1785 to R. Walden Moore, present organist and choirmaster, and the church s six organs from that built in 1785 by Henry Holland to the present historic 1934 Aeolian-Skinner instrument. Appendices discuss the Bells of Trinity, Stephen Loher s City Hall Chime Quarters, and include hymns composed by former organists, a Christmas anthem by G. Huntington Byles, and a descant by Mr. Moore. Music on the Green traces the long, rich history of one musically-significant New England Episcopal church that mirrors so much of the literature of the organ and church music in the United States. Over 100 pages, the book features many illustrations, including a beautiful color photograph of the Aeolian-Skinner organ case. Subscriptions to Music on the Green begin at $25 for which the name of the donor will be printed in the list of subscribers in the front of the volume. Please consider adding your name to the list in what is one of the more important church music histories ever published in our country. 12
