They are good workers and are trying to advance the interests of the pupils. The Hughes, school house has a new shed with improved toilets. Some of the other schools need attention to light, painting, and minor repairs. No heavy expenditures will be required for some time. We have a fine addition on the east end of tne High School building. The basement is about thirty feet square, and is used as a science laboratory and store room. The first floor is used for a Junior High class and recitation room. The second floor joins the assembly room and provides for the Commercial classes. A fire escape has just been installed. As we saved the greater part of the equipment from the Grange Hall, we have had no heavy bills for a few weeks, with a small attendance. The interest was good and it is hoped that a larger class may be formed next winter. RECOMMENDATIONS Our appropriations will need careful attention. What we can give the children through the schools should claim our support in spite of hard times. If we deprive the pupils of anything in the way of an education it will be too late to remedy the loss when prosperity returns. If we maintain our standards, our schools will help the students to prepare for conditions they encounter in their everyday life.

50 ANNUAL REPORT OF Common schools $6, High school 5, Books and supplies 1, Repairs and appliances 1, Insurance, light and power \ 1, Respectfully submitted, ELMER H. WEBBER, Superintendent of Schools. Mapleton, Maine, February 19, REPORT OF PRINCIPAL * To the Superintendent of Schools: What is right with our schools and what is needed to strengthen them are two questions which every citizen asks' himself when he takes stock of what the school has done and is doing for the town. With these queries in mind I offer this report as an aid in answering them. The Junior-Senior High School opened on September 15 with a total registration of 145. Our present enrollment of 126 is due largely to the transfer of pupils from the 7th grade back into t^e 6th. I do not feel that this is in reality a setback to those scholars who needed the rudiments offered in that grade for thorough traiing in the elementary schools is, I believe, the only safeguard against failure in high school. With such a large number of students we could not have worked this year without the extra facilities given by the addition to the high school building. This is appreciated by both scholars and teachers. It has made the school life more pleasant/more healthful, and has in other ways greatly increased the efficiencv of the school. It will meet the needs of the school for manv vears to

TOWN OF MAPLETON 51 Work in the Junior-Senior High School has been accomplished pleasantly this year because of a corps of teachers who have been willing to cooperate in working for the best interests of the school. With the strengthening of every department as its aim, it is only natural that increased efficiency should result. The most noticeable improvement perhaps is in the Commercial Department. More that 50 per cent of our pupils elect this course, probably because of its practical value. Mapleton should be proud of this branch of the High School work as well as the others.- Our curriculum is the same as last year, with the exception of the General Science Course. The three classes have been combined in t7 a divisions, one for boys, and the other for girls. Physical education has been c,ndi.:*_ted as 'ast ^ear. We have tried to substitute out-door sports for basket ball. We hope that an interest has been created in this sort of recreation which will increase in the next few years. The library is another feature worthy of mention, for ours is as good as any found in other schools of this size in Maine, and better than those in many towns of larger population. Since we have no public library, we should add to our school collection as much as possible, for this phase of education is far too important to be neglected. We are pleased that many parents have visited the school. Their interest, demonstrated in this wav. is an incentive to the teachers as well as the nupds. We would be elad if everv citizen could see the work of the school during the year, In looking over the work of the year I feel that

52 ANNUAL REPORT OF Mapleton High School is looking forward, not backward. I wish to extend to the school officials, teachers and citizens my appreciation for your cooperation which makes this possible. Respectfully submitted, R. J. CARPENTER 0 % COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT To the Superintendent of Schools : There are in the typewriting laboratory nine machines, all new and all in perfect condition three Royals, three Underwoods, and three Woodstocks. Thus the pupils have a chance to become familiar with the different types of machines which are most widely used in business offices. The first year in typewriting is spent mainly in learning the use of the machine and gradually acquiring speed. The second year s work is devoted to practice for speed and writing good form business letters. The ability to write an attractive business letter is one of the most important phases of typewriting, and great stress will be laid on this matter. The shorthand course should be more or less correlated with typewriting, because of the necessity of transcribing the shorthand notes. The present class in second year shorthand has done very little xrlrk *n tjausciv 'Hon, owin^ to the fact that they had onlv i mester s work in this subject last ^ear. The tm-~ has been spent' in reviewing thoroughly the work of last year and studying ad- * vanced principles of shorthand. This class will be ready by the spring term to take dictation of letters and transcribe them at a fair rate of speed. The work in the first year shorthand class has been taken up rather slowly, as this is a difficult subject for beginners, and unless the fundamentals

TOWN OF MAPLETON 55 are thoroughly covered no speed can be gained later. It is expected that this class will practically complete the basic principles of shorthand this year, so that next year s work can be devoted entirely to acquiring speed and ease in writing. The classes in bookkeeping have accomplished their work very satisfactorily.. Two periods a day are given to this subject. With this arrangement% no outside preparation is required and all work is done under supervision. After the (principles in the text are taken up and discussed in class the pupils are given practice sets to work on. These sets contain the transactions of a business for a period of three months, and the student as bookkeeper for the concern solves all the problems which are apt to come up in a business office. The advanced office. The advanced bookkeeping takes up principles of accounting, and the practice sets of this class consist of the problems of a partnership and a corporation. My sincere thanks are given to all who have aided in the work of this department. i / ' Respectfully submitted, ELIZABETH CHARLETON. HOME ECONOMICS, / To the Superintendent of Schools, Mapleton, Me.: This year, due to the cooperation which I have received from the students and parents, together with the improved facilities for my work, I feel that the results obtained in the Home Economics Courses have been very satisfactory. The regular work in clothing and foods has been carried on. One-half year is devoted to each sub- <, H V ' * * > ject. In the foods courses especial emphasis has been placed upon food selection in relation to health. All laboratory work has been done on the meal planning basis. All classes, including children of the seventh grade, have learned to plan balanced meals, and have prepared and served at least one simple meal. The clothing courses include in addition to the construction of simple garments, work on the clothing budget, selection of clothing, and some work in textile testing. In one class, com- 4 *, / ' <, ' t * # 0 posed of Juniors and Seniors, more attention will be paid to decorative stitches and some work in millinery will be done. The subjects of Biology and General Science have been added to the Domestic Arts curriculum this vear.
