Flanking Timmons are new United States citizens Oxana and Mark Tseytlin (Russia).
5 President s Corner Compatriots! As I am writing this message it is Veterans Day. What distinguishes this Veterans Day, 2018, is that it is the 100 th anniversary of the end of World War 1. This war, termed the war to end all wars, led to the mobilization of more than 70 million military personnel over the world, making it one of the largest wars in history. An estimated 9 million combatants and seven million civilians died as a direct result of the war. Military losses were exacerbated by new technological and industrial developments and the tactical stalemate caused by grueling trench warfare. I spent this past week in London with my son, Scott, who was on a business trip there. During the days leading up to Armistice Day, I walked the streets sightseeing and was amazed by the number of Londoners wearing bright red poppies on their lapels. Virtually everyone sported one. I knew that London had a large immigrant population, however, I was surprised to observe that so many people who were not originally British, such as Asian, Hindu and Muslim, wore the poppy proudly. What a unified sign of reverence! The Remembrance Poppy was inspired by the WWI poem, In Flanders Fields, written by a Canadian physician, Lieutenant-Colonel John McRae. McRae was struck by the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers. The practice of the display of the Poppy rapidly spread throughout the Allies and In the U.S., the American Legion adopted the Poppy to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war. Just as the bright red poppy reminds us to never forget, the evergreen wreaths which are placed on the graves of our departed military men and women in December is also a remembrance of their sacrifice for us. As part of the Wreaths Across America Campaign, members of the George Washington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will meet on Saturday, December 15, at the Cemetery of the Alleghenies to lay evergreen wreathes on the graves of our fallen heroes. Wreaths Across America is making it possible that every service man and woman buried there is honored with a wreath. Everyone is invited to join us. To you and your families, have a Blessed Holiday Season. Your humble and obedient servant, Kurt Winter
