3 Page 3 President s Message to Members - Joe Bartkoski As we begin the start of what I am sure will be a busy Holiday Season, let us be thankful for all we have. NAIFA members are some of the most generous people I know. Being a member in itself is giving back to our industry. However, I do not know any better association that have members who give back time, talent and treasure to the communities we serve like our membership does. I bring this up because it is important for our members to sell this to young agents, and agents who have forgotten what NAIFA has done for them and their careers. How often we forget, the well we drink from, was a well we did not dig. It came long before us. Yet it amazes me when someone drops their membership and gives the excuse that they are not getting anything out of it. Really? Each night I come home to my family, I appreciate what my career has done for me. That career also includes a large part of what NAIFA has done for not only me, but for my client s well being. Think of the good it has done, not only in the past, but recently, and you will understand how valuable your membership really is. If you sell any type of an annuity, life, mutual funds that you get commissions for, and a lot of other products that generate a trail/commission, be thankful for what NAIFA does for you. The difference between a member of NAIFA and a non member is this: members of NAIFA have a career because of NAIFA. Non members have a job. Happy Thanksgiving to all. The Executive Director s Corner - Lorie A. Smith I just hung up the phone from a lovely conversation with John Britton. That man simply amazes me. I have to think back over the past 23 years and our relationship which hasn t always been as pleasant as it is these days. John is a gruff, in your face kind of man, few rarely see his sweet side. I asked him to place a call to the DOI about the state exchanges and he said he would, after we hung up he called me back and said. I will, after I feed the cat. John loves his cats so much. Thank you John for serving this association so well since I wanted to remind everyone that 80% of our membership will renew on the first of the new year. Please make it a priority to pay your dues. In addition to paying your dues I suggest you give the minimum to the PAC, more if you can but at least the minimum. I have to believe that the members who don t contribute to the PAC.well they obviously haven t been informed what the PAC does for them. Forget the company PAC that you may give to, that will not cover YOU, look at the PAC like Workers Comp Insurance, do you want to be able to continue to serve your clients in the same fashion you do today, offering the same tax free products that are available today? Then you better wake up and realize that NAIFA is the only association and PAC that has you as an insurance professional in mind. THIS IS YOUR ASSOCIATION! I cannot understand the apathy going on at this most critical time in your industry. Of all the careers that could be effected by negative legislation, yours has a huge bulls eye on it! Call me if you want to be educated on what the PAC does for you. I m not in your business and I get it..why don t you?

5 Page 5 LILI Report We are now accepting applications for the 2012 class. Deadline is November 15, "Ready for a kick in your personal and professional life? Ready to take your business and your relationships to the next level? To be the best wife/husband, parent, co-worker and leader you can be? The Leadership In Life Institute is the place to see this happen!!! We are getting down to the wire on applications for the 2012 LILI Class. I went to training in Chicago October and had a great time of learning and preparing for the new class. We have students in St Louis interested, Springfield, and possibly SE. Would like to see a couple from Central and then we will find a middle ground to hold the class or what we may do, is have a traveling class so not everyone has to travel every month. This will all depend on the students. Please your apps to either Amy Kern at gr8ins@msn.com or to myself, Deb Coulter at cisdc1@sbcglobal.net. If you need to make financial arrangements, let one of us know. Questions?? Please contact Amy Kern NAIFA Responds to HHS Decision to Abandon the CLASS Act October 14th NAIFA issued the following statement in response to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius's letter to Congress stating that HHS has suspended implementation of the CLASS Act: "NAIFA applauds the Obama administration s decision to abandon the unsustainable long-term care insurance program called the CLASS Act," said NAIFA President Robert Miller. "NAIFA supports the goal of achieving financial security to cover long-term care services. However, we believe there are better ways to help people plan for their long-term care needs, including the offer of quality insurance products at their place of employment." NAIFA believes the following efforts are better suited to address the long-term care financing needs: Increase awareness of long-term care planning needs including increased funding for the Long- Term Care Clearing House run by HHS. Expand State Partnership Program that allows participants to keep some or all of their assets if they apply for Medicaid after they use their long-term care insurance benefits. Allow long-term care insurance to be included in employer-sponsored cafeteria plans and flexible spending arrangements so premiums could be paid for using pre-tax dollars, making longterm care insurance more accessible for all Americans

6 Page 6 IFAPAC Report - Greg Grimes, Chairman We are late in the game and way behind in points. Much like last weekend s Mizzou football game against Texas A&M we need to come from behind and win this year s game. All that being said this is both a team and an individual game. A team game because we need leadership in each of the locals to step up and set the example for the rank and file membership and an individual game because it is ultimately up to each person to make the conscious decision to support the PAC. No one dislikes the current political system that we have more than me, it has seemed to de-evolve into a contest of who has the biggest war chest, who can throw the most our elected officials for access. The most frequent reason I hear from folks about not giving to the PAC is: I don t believe in giving to PACs. I counter that with I don t believe in letting the government gut our Industry. If you re ok with having a bullseye on your back then don t contribute. But if you want to protect your client s assets and the benefits they currently enjoy AND you want to keep getting paid for doing what you do then you have an obligation to contribute to IFAPAC. I would like to recognize a few folks in the state who are trying to go above and beyond the call of duty in making our members aware of the importance of the PAC. Walt Holley in St. Louis, Jeff Howerton in KC and Rob Hendrickson in Springfield have all stepped up their efforts in PAC support. If you hear form them or someone on their teams please give them a few minutes and step up as well. Great job to all of the leaders state wide who are making a difference. EACH ONE GET ONE that s our mantra. Greg Grimes, Missouri State PAC chair Have you signed your IFAPAC Directive? If not, go to naifa.org and click on the IFAPAC icon. Thank You!
