5 Cabin Fever Workouts: When winter makes you stay home Let's face it: winter can be long when you're in a cold-weather location, and the gym gets old after awhile. When you can't get outside, sometimes it helps to simply get a change of scenery -- even if that means a workout at home. The good news is, you can make up your own routine. Here are some ideas to help you get started: Lunges: This tried-and-true exercise is great for strengthening the legs and backside. Do lunges and reverse lunges to really work a variety of muscle groups. Burpees: What better way to mix cardio and strength than this one? Jogging in place: Do 45 seconds of tushkicking, and 45 seconds of high knees. Take a quick break and go at it again for as many rounds as you can muster. Pushups: Perform full pushups or modify them. Either way, you can do 3-5 rounds of a chosen number, and feel the burn. Tricep dips: Be sure to find a solid piece of furniture that will hold you and won't move. Then do this classic exercise with your legs straight or bent and, as with the pushups, do 3-5 rounds of a certain number. Sit-ups: Pick your favorite way to do them, and get to it! Your core will thank you. Planks: Assume the position! You know the one, where you appear poised to perform a push-up and then stay still for as long as possible. The most popular pose is with forearms flat on the floor, arms forming a 90-degree angle, and legs stretched out behind you, toes pointed down to the ground. Remember to keep your back flat. There are any number of ways to mix things up and stay in shape. And this is your house -- play whatever music you want or put any channel you like on TV. The key to sticking with a workout is to have fun with it, after all. 9 When the snowmaggedon hits, just don t make it worse for yourself by shoveling The 4,000 souls who live in Hancock, Michigan probably know to get their snowblowers out before winter drops the usual 200 inches on them. But those in less flaky climes, when a storm drops six inches of snow, are probably going to get out a snow shovel one morning. Think first. Just don't shovel snow if you are 45 or over. According to Popular Science, shoveling snow isn't mere exercise. It is uniquely challenging to the heart, causing blood pressure to rise and oxygen to drop. In addition, it is done in the cold, which means an increased chance of heart blood vessel constriction. Don't imagine you are protected because you are a jogger or runner. The demands put on the heart while shoveling snow are much higher than with those activities. Still, it is better to be in shape than out of shape when you shovel snow. If you absolutely must shovel snow, then follow these guidelines: 1 Warm up with some light stretching and movement. 2 Don't smoke! You are going to need all the oxygen your body can get. 3 Eat lightly before shoveling. Large meals put a strain on your heart. 4 Dress in layers. 5 Plan to stop shoveling frequently. Go in and get warm. 6 Push the snow, don't lift it. 7 If you must lift snow, at least use a small shovel. Those wide shovels are best for pushing. Use a small, steel shovel. Don't constantly try to throw snow. Instead, turn small amounts over in a pile. 8 Don't drink alcohol before or after shoveling. 9 Consider buying a snow blower instead.

10 How to face the flu and common cold The dangers of concussion It's an acute respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses A or B. While most people who get the flu recover in a week or two, others can develop severe and potentially life-threatening complications. According to the Mayo Clinic, those most threatened are children under five and adults older than 65, nursing home and long-term care residents, pregnant women up to two weeks postpartum, and others with weakened immune systems. So too are people with chronic illnesses or who are extremely obese. If the flu strikes, stay home. You're sick and highly contagious. Embrace your downtime and heal your body with it. Curl up on the couch, read, watch TV, and nod off to sleep anytime. Get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night--your body is fighting a virus. Drink plenty of fluids for both the flu or a cold. Fluids hydrate your respiratory system and convert thick mucus into a liquid you can spit out. An expectorant will thin the mucus, too. For congestion, the Mayo Clinic recommends over-the-counter decongestant tablets like Sudafed and nasal sprays. Studies suggest they narrow blood vessels in the lining of the nose and help reduce swelling. Remember that protein is essential to maintaining body strength. Among your best sources for it are lean meat, poultry, fish, legumes, dairy, eggs, nuts, and seeds. For your cold, recent studies suggest that chicken soup may indeed degrade its symptoms. Nobody really knows why, but the evidence implies this time-honored remedy helps subdue inflammation. According to the American College of Chest Physicians, chicken soup appears to slow the movement of neutrophils, the white blood cells that harbor acute infection. Tests indicate the vegetables and chicken pieces combine to produce "inhibitory activity." If you try zinc for a cold, be sure to follow dosage instructions carefully: Harvard Medical School recommendss mg per day. Young athletes are at an increased risk of concussion, according to studies at the US National Library of Medicine. According to the research, sports-related concussions are responsible for about nine percent of all high school athletic injuries. Of all emergency room concussion cases, sports injuries account for 25 percent. These injuries are likely underreported. One 2006 study suggested that 85 percent of concussions in 16-to-34-year-olds are linked to sports. Concussions occur when a sudden blow slams the brain against the inside of the skull. Even minor concussions can produce harmful effects, including nausea, loss of consciousness, headaches, irritability, loss of coordination, disorientation, and slurred speech. Severe cases can lead to bleeding in the brain, which can be fatal, and in all instances, symptoms can continue for days, weeks, or even months after the initial event. Anyone with a suspected concussion should see a doctor as early as possible.

Are you obsessed over something? Has something gained your attention in such a way that you have made some drastic changes in order to accommodate that matter? Deer hunters do this all the time. I was just reliving the past season with a friend. He was telling me about a place where he hunted that was for bow hunters only. One particular evening, just before dark, he saw what he called the buck of a lifetime, and it was only 60 yards from his stand. And even though he could not get a shot at it, it caused him to almost ignore all the other bucks that came his way; and there were plenty. By the time his few days of hunting were over, he had passed up some really big bucks because none of them were the "one" he had seen just a few days earlier. In the end, the cost was coming home emptyhanded all because he had become obsessed with one prize so valuable that every other prize paled in comparison. He is not alone in this obsession. I know of other hunters who have marked one particular buck as their goal and have waited for 2 or 3 years in order to get it. And I know of some who waited just as long only to find out their prize was now their neighbor's trophy. Some may not understand this obsession. Some do. Everyone ought to. Outdoor Truths with Gary Miller In recalling these stories, I am reminded of the Biblical story of the man who found a valuable pearl. The Bible says when he discovered it, he sold everything he owned and bought it. No diversification. No hedging his investment. No waiting until more favorable times. But selling it all pushing it all in for this one pearl of great price. What was the Lord comparing this most valuable pearl to? The kingdom of heaven. What is the kingdom of heaven? Let's just say it is the totality of God in our lives now and the greatness of heaven in the future. And what the Lord desires is this; that there would come a time in our lives when we finally understand the most valuable thing in our life is simply Him. And in fully understanding this, we would willfully, gladly, and excitingly be willing to give it all up in order to experience, without distraction, the worth and surpassing greatness of that relationship.
