1 The View (from High Point Road) Newsletter of January 16, 2008 Mission Statement: Recognizing that God is the source of all that we are and all that we have, our call is to provide a loving, accepting environment so that we may share, through Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit, God s unconditional love among ourselves and community, and continually nurture and develop our spiritual awareness through celebration, prayer, worship, formation and play. Malone s Musings Stewardship. The stewardship committee met on January 14, 2008 to plan and to highlight stewardship events for the year I am impressed by the Christ like love that each member of the committee has toward each other and toward the stewardship of our parish. We reminded ourselves that stewardship is not just about money (although that is important), but about how we care for ourselves care for others care for creation and care for the gifts that God has given us. Bob Drake has joined the Stewardship Committee. His focus will be on stewardship of our environment and buildings. Bob is involved with the Georgia Interfaith Power and Light. We hope to offer workshops and seminars to the community on how to safe energy and to make our buildings greener. Of course, there is the area of financial stewardship. The good news is that our average giving has increased for We have almost $25,000 in new and increased pledges. The not so good news is that there are a good number folks who pledged last year who have not returned a pledge for this year. If you have not turned in your pledge card, please do so. If you do not have a pledge card, we will send one to you. We know that circumstances change in people s lives...loss of job medical expenses moving out of the city. However, a pledge in any amount will help us plan for the upcoming year. Lent is just around the corner. Come join us on Tuesday, February 5 for the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. The men s breakfast group and the men s dinner group will be the hosts. Let s make this a true Fat Tuesday celebration as we prepare for a Holy Lent...a time of reflection and rededication of our lives in Christ. Details about our Lenten offerings will be found in this newsletter. I encourage everyone in the congregation to attend the Diocesan Ministry Fair Saturday, February 23, a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta. The theme for the Ministry Fair is God s Creation, Our Response. Please go to the Diocese of Atlanta web page for more details and to register online. Peace, Trawin FORMATION NEWS AND EVENTS ERIC BARETTO RETURNS FOR ADULT FORMATION Last year, Eric Baratto ( a New Testament scholar at Emory) led a very successful series of discussions which explored the resurrection themes in the Old Testament. Eric is leading another series this year. We have been exploring how God has appeared to people in the Bible and throughout history, and Eric is continuing that theme. His series (which appropriately enough, started on Epiphany) is examining Epiphanies in the Bible. We started with the visit of the Magi on Jan. 6 and discussed the epiphanies in Genesis 3 (Adam and Eve). Next Sunday, we will look at epiphanies in the life of Moses (Eric will be out of town for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend). Eric will return on Jan. 27, when we will look at epiphanies in the lives of Abraham and others in Genesis, We will conclude with a discussions of epiphanies in the lives of Jesus, Paul and St. Augustine. The discussions have been interesting and thought provoking so far. We hope that you can join us.

2 PAGE 2 NEWSLETTER OF JANUARY 16, 2008 FORMATION NEWS AND EVENTS CHILDREN S CHRISTIAN FORMATION The CCF department will be holding a meeting for all parents and other interested parishioners to provide a VBS 2008 preview, and to discuss the upcoming curriculum for Spring All are welcome to attend this important meeting on Sunday, February 17th after the 11:15 service in the Nave. SEEKING SIMPLICITY: A FIVE WEEK SERIES OF LENTEN MINI-RETREATS While we do many things throughout the year to quiet ourselves and listen to God (our Labyrinth retreat last month is our most recent example), Lent is an especially good time to do this. We enter a season of reflection and waiting, as we seek to wait with Jesus during his 40 days of fasting and temptation in the wilderness. We put aside distractions to focus on those things that really matter. We can do this in a number of different ways. We may give up doing something we enjoy during Lent. Or we may take on additional responsibilities, denying ourselves in order to serve others. Or we may dedicate an extended amount of time to God by going on a spiritual retreat (at a monastery or retreat house), removing distractions and listening for whatever God may choose to say. This Lent, we are offering a series of five miniretreats (Feb. 9 March 8), starting at 12:30 PM around the fireplace in the CCF area, and lasting minutes. During this time, we can each take a break from our normal routine and seek God s perspective for this season in our lives. We will share a light snack, discuss the meaning of Lent, and will then spend time in quiet reflection and prayer. We hope you can join us. May God bring meaning and insight to you in this season. MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES & PARISH LIFE EVENTS FEBRUARY ARTIST APPROACHING 6 Approaching 6 a group of 5 artists, will show from February 7 March 5. A reception will be held to meet the artists Sunday, February 10th at 4 PM. CATHEDRAL BOOK STORE January 20 The Cathedral Book Store will be at Atonement with a myriad of books and gifts items for you to purchase. Ten percent of the proceeds of the sales will be given back to Atonement to support evangelism. Please come and shop! AFRICAN TEAM MINISTRIES February 3 through 10 - As an intermediary ministry between African and American churches of the Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Anglican denominations, African Team Ministries provide funds for orphan and refugee relief, missions and evangelism in East Africa. Funds are sent directly to each Bishop to provide school fees, tuition, books, and uniforms, ensuring that the children receive education and a measure of stability. Many of these children are AIDS orphans. Please support this organization and their efforts by buying from the wonderful selection of items that will be for sale from February 3 through February 10. SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER Come do your part eat, celebrate and be merry so that you will be ready for a Holy Lent. The men s breakfast and men s dinner groups will be our gracious hosts for this year s supper. Please sign-up on the bulletin board so they can plan appropriately. PARISH LIFE COMMITTEE MEETING There will be a meeting of the Parish Life committee on Saturday, February 9 at 10AM, in the kitchen. Please call Paula Caldarella if you have questions. We would love to have you join us if you are interested in helping with this fun committee. STEWARDSHIP PLATES AND MUGS In continuing Atonement s awareness of our responsibility to act in ways that protect, heal, and honor the integrity of God's creation, the Parish Life committee has taken on the task of reducing Atonement s reliance on foam, paper and plastic products. Step 1 has been to purchase china plates

If you have any questions, please contact Paula Caldarella at caldarel@bellsouth.net or AROUND THE DIOCESE 2008 Ministry Fair WITH THANKS AND GRATITUDE To the many ministers in the church who continue to do the work of God through Jesus Christ. The Flower Guild and Altar Guild who worked so hard to ensure the church looked beautiful for the Christmas services. Christen Erskine, our wonderful Parish Administrator, who worked many extra hours to ensure we were ready for Christmas and who pulled together the delightful Christmas card design. Thank you to our wonderful children s choir and their director, Ms. Nan. They sang Christmas carols for the residents at Belmont Village Assisted Living and gave us a wonderful Pageant at the 5:30 service on Christmas Eve. Ben Leaptrott, the musicians and the choir for the inspiring music Thank you to the many, many folks who are involved in our annual Epiphany Pig Roast. Thanks to Art Dugger and crew for cooking the pig; thank you to the people who sat with the pig through the night, and thank you to the Parish Life Committee and their team of helpers, who set tables, cleaned dishes and stacked chairs. VESTRY UPDATES FINANCIAL UPDATE The total budget for 2008 is $388,845. This is $32,404 monthly or $7,478 weekly. Thank you to all who have made a financial pledge to Atonement for Additional Covenant Cards are available outside the parish office if you still need to submit your pledge. VESTRY RETREAT The vestry and staff will be at Kanuga, Friday, January 25 Saturday, January 26, 2008 for their annual retreat. Please pray for them as they travel and plan for the year to come.
